Agree that FRLG is where GameFreak cut their teeth on remakes, deciding what should stay accurate and what should change. The lack of berry growing probably was because they decided not to implement any kind of time system, leaving RBY and FRLG the only ones with absolutely no time mechanics. They did at least rebalance Pickup to compensate by replacing most of the item drop list with practical in game berries, which I never realized as a kid. That’s at least better than Gen 5 locking berries behind a now dead flash game on the Pokemon website.
Hey Scott! I've been loving watching your quest to learn FireRed. Not to dissuade you from your love of sleep, but be careful with it against Giovanni's Kangaskhan. It has Early Bird so it will wake up quickly. IF you hit :) Thanks for another great video!
Not sure if he's subbed to you or not, but I did recommend that he should watch your channel to learn gen 3 in general and frlg in particular to get better. Love your content and this series from Scott!
I've found Hypno to be a pretty solid team member in casual playthroughs of FRLG, since its high Sp. Defense, Psychic resistance, and access to Shadow Ball with a serviceable Attack stat make it a great Alakazam check. I'm not surprised to see it do well here.
I know these are first playthroughs, but there was something pretty funny about seeing a Pokemon with Insomnia holding a Chesto Berry against the champion fight. Even with the reliance on Meditate aside, you did very well with Hypno and I wonder how quickly it'll be able to beat the game with optimization.
On the fifteenth day of December, Scott's Thoughts gave to me: The tapirs using Hypnosis The 'King of Emerald loafing A lively mid stage slashing The Johto trio roaming Surge's 'Chu with a competent trainer Classy Cat v Pig Monkey! A moonstone evolution The "Rhydon of gen three" A Pure Power powerhouse Wattson's ace in Hoenn 'Phan v Ursaring! A tiny turtle's bubble The fire starter digging A garden lizard's leech seed And those three weirdo mons punching
I remember playing pokemon yellow hypo was a Destroyer my entrie team was left in the dust between hypo power and strength this Pokemon was a power house genius , it crazy hypo has got that much love
On the type chart from gen 1 to 2, it is always important to note that not only is Dark super effective against and immune to psychic, but the other type that was added, steel, also resists it. So Psychic got double screwed.
Does anyone else feel a noticeable placebo effect by the fact that Hypnosis is 60%? For whatever reason I see 60% and I decide that I can live with that. But then when I see Sing at 55% I'm like, "ew get out of here with that trash." They are only 5% different in accuracy 😅
I understand using Hypnosis for the high risk/high reward combo. I understand neglecting it for the low risk/low reward combo. What I don't get is starting out with Hypnosis, then switching to attacks after it fails. Failing doesn't constitute new info, since you already know the probability, so it can only be a shift in risk preference.
Honestly, using hypnosis isn't necessarily a bad call. It's a go to of yours for a reason. Its endured multiple years, and on more runs than i can keep track of it's been super helpful for you.
About the reimagining instead of remake... In Golbat's case, it makes sense. Most golbats we see are used by Team Rocket. They wouldn't treat their Golbats well and they wouldn't evolve. It would be interesting to keep that evolution in this game.
6:21 Nice things in the comments! Joking aside, Hypnosis is really good in theory, especially in combination with setup moves. Finding the spots where it's worth the 60% accuracy, if there are enough to justify the moveslot, is a challenge that's much easier when optimizing for a 2nd playthrough. Hypno did quite well overall despite it's middling Sp. Atk and Speed! I wonder how the Abra line would compare. My guess is that it would be quite close since Abra has to Struggle train to 16, but Kadabra should sweep most of the game from there.
"each game dictates its own pace.... Emerald takes the longest because it is a pain in the butt to explain each mechanic, especially tate and liza." I fixed it for you Scott. 😂
"With my controversial take about Nidorino's attractiveness out of the way" XD. I was listening in the background and I just had to come to the video to listen to that again
Theory: Giovanni doesn't have a rhydon because he is not a real trainer, he's a rich guy that can afford his crazy team. Persian - payday Kangaskhan - rare safari Nido's - moon rocks are presumed to be rare and requires little training Rhyhorn itself is rare but requires a lot of training, which Giovanni won't do but blue will And dugtrio is for running away from the police
6:28 It's a good first step for you to admit that you "Can't stop using sleep strategies whenever you want". Specially when half the time you are moves like hypnosis and sing, instead of leaning in the more reliable ones. I forsee you going nuts when it's time to do a run with a Spore user like Shroomish XD
in terms of gametime results, holy heck Blastoise?! honestly expected a result like this given it's OP-ness in Gen1, but wasn't quite expecting it to do that well would also be interesting to see a FireRed vs Red race, purely to see how much the remakes improve/slowdown a pokemon's overall time (without the Gen1 skips of TeamRocket in Celadon for example)
I'm so glad they changed that pokedex entry. Hypno was the first pokemon hinted at to steal kids before the game freak flat out said yea some pokemon steal kids.
Hypno has such a special place for me, I remember borrowing FireRed from a friend and the save was at route 3 with the starter traded for a level 50 dewgong. I later caught a drowzee an soloed the game with those two
I just love this new format 1. Less than 30min 2. Has evolution in the way 3. I prefer the remakes than the original gen1 specially because inventory management (lol worst reason) Awesome to see your channel growing so much! Would be fun to watch your analysis playing Baldur’s gate 3 :D
i will actually say a genuinely nice thing about hypnosis (i guess moreso about hypno) i used a hypno while completing a leaf green living dex and my hypno rarely ever missed hypnosis and would have 100% been better than parasect with spore also so glad to see hypno crush it in FRLG as well, shes one of my top 3 favorite pokemon
Been loving the December dailies, Scott! I am honestly very impressed with Hypno's performance here, turns out a great movepool even in Gen 3 can overcome not so great stats after all! Looking forward to the rest of the month!
Hiya! Noticed you looking for items on cycling road, if you didn't know already, the hidden items on the right path are directly in line with the signs visible on the left path, could help save a second or two searching lol
I've been playing FRLG for the first time recently (skipped the GBA games when growing up) and it's so good. Despite not having played Red in at least 18 years, I instinctly recognized the lines from random trainers and could tell what Pokemon they'd send out. Those games are the best kind of remake bar none. Edit: Wdym Nidorino ugly? smh
Scott starting to have so many constructive criticisms of his own play makes me feel like optimised runs for this generation are probably not far off. It's probably just down to XP Router getting upgraded
Hypno was my favourite gen 1 psychic type Pokemon. Little sad that Game freak downgraded his special attack but I still stand for my boi. About Bills experiment: Nidorino might be ugly but gen 1 Nidorina sprite from red/blue is the ugliest.
Fire Red would be such a different beast if you could get 2 White Herbs, buy them, or if you got 1 early but it was reusable. Rival 3 and the champion could be dramatically easier without sand attack messing you up.
With the sleep status negating 1-3 enemy turns (averaging 2), a 60%-accurate Hypnosis is worth 1.2 turns on average. That’s some solid turn economy right there! 👍👍🤨👍
Can you do a solo run using ursaring line in HeartGold and SoulSilver I like your vigoroth and slaking solo run, Slaking and Ursaring is my 2 favorite normal type pokemons also ursaring is so underrated but have a monstrous attack and a great abilities I hope you will do a ursaring run in the future
Honestly... can I just say that I feel like the Gen 3 remakes of the first games have a lackluster learnset for the most part? Is that just me cause I'm struggling, or are others on my side here, too?
I think when you start doing optimised second playthoughs that Hypno could possibly do a run very close to an hour, if not under an hour, in FireRed but only if it starts as a Hypno as it seems like it is quite the beast in this game. Starting as a Drowzee it seems like under an hour and 10 minutes is going to be quite easy for it to do.
Scott is a GENIUS for giving the AMAZING move hypnosis a shot - its 60% accuracy is a coin flip in YOUR favour!! Way to go Scott :)
mostly just because it causes sleep.... its not because of its "good accuracy"
If it's not 100% it's 50%

Fun fact: giovanni's kangaskhan has early bird! Sleeping it is a mistake, if one ive made often

All the pro plays: Chesto Berry with Insomnia!
Big brain moment 🤯
Don’t feel bad. It’s the Pokémon’s whole gimmick! It hypnotizes people; it evolves to have a pendulum for sleeps sake. Thanks for another run!

This line is meant to be creepy and theme of the line is putting pokemon/people down to sleep so poison gas makes perfect sense

The Sleeper King reclaims his throne after receiving the offerings of his hypnosis-addicted follower.
Man, i hope Hypno crushes this game like it does in yellow. I mean, it obviously won't, but i think it's still gonna do a solid job.
Scott is a good content creator and his videos are fun. There is your nice comment 😊 have a nice day buddy.
"Scott's Thoughts are never extended, Frodo Baggins, nor are they truncated. Scott pontificates precisely what he means to."
Funnily enough, Bill DOES transform into a Nidorino in the Let's Go games!
Love Hypno whenever playing through kanto I pretty much always add him to the team instead of kadabra. He's a solid psychic type.
In the Pokemon Adventure manga, Bill is combined with a Rattata and is almost eaten by a Fearow.
When Bill transformed, I honestly imagined it more as a Jeff Goldblum in The Fly sort of thing
Fun fact: In the pokemon manga, Bill actually became a Rattata. He was also almost eaten by a Fearow.
I shall forever call Hypnosis, Missnosis lol that was gold!
Thanks for all the uploads Scott, I am allways waiting for more, you really got my addicted :)
I feel like these times spoil us though. Next month TH-cam is gonna feel barren without these.
Loving this series with evolving Pokémon during your solo runs 😁
Nidorino may be ugly but at least he’s not hooked on hypnosis!

You need a built in bell in your overlay to remind you to replace any sleep move that's not Spore as soon as is possible.
