For Misty's Starmie, Rock Blast would've yielded better odds of victory rather than relying on Secret Power. Rock Blast hitting at least three times, stacked with its 80% accuracy gives that a 50% chance of happening, while Secret Power is just a 30% paralysis chance.
I was thinking the same thing。
Yeah definitely was thinking the same, just after he wasnt going to discount the move's value.
I was dying inside thinking that
Exactly what I was going to say. Secret power was taking like 75% of Starmie's hp, Rock Blast could have just killed it a good % of the time.
Why rely on a 50% chance of winning if you have a 100% win chance except for when you get crit or your first move missed. Yes that option was there all along.
Scott .. idk if you're aware of this but in the city with the 3rd gym in the poke center the lady by nurse Joy gives you the VS Seeker which allows you to rematch trainers... It could be useful especially in runs when you run out of trainers to battle
I love the Vs. Seeker, I would spend hours grinding money and experience on Five Island's Resort Gorgeous in the post-game
This comment needs more upvotes.
@@AzureFlute
I used to do that too!!!
Keep in mind that these playthroughs are many months old now, due to them being exclusive to members for a brief period. ;)
I have to wonder during the grind for Misty if grabbing the VS Seeker in the Vermillion pokemon center would have been faster than wild pokemon grinding.
Shotgun inside me
Probably since trainers have better xp yields
Yeah, he’s probably programmed to play like this is Gen 1 if forgetting to get the Silph Scope is any indication.
VS seeker is life
@@skeetermania3202That's why he's doing these early runs with only 1 attempt! He knows that he's not great at the game yet!
Learns rock blast
“In the past i have definitely disregarded this move’s usefulness but im not going to do that today”
He did, in fact, do that today.
SCOTT.
All you needed to do was to use Rock Blast against Misty. Even a three-hit would've gotten the ohko!
Secret Power against targets neutral to your STAB is not usually the move 😂
(btw I'm loving this series because we get to see you making mistakes again! It's always easy to see the correct moves when I'm here at home and YOU'RE out there playing. But this is the content I fell in love with; Scott getting stubborn and trying the same bad strategy over and over again when there's a clear viable option RIGHT THERE. I love your new stuff, but man, it's so nice to get a throwback moment like this!)
Yup. Two hits of rock blast is already 74 power, better than secret power.
Though I can't blame him. During Rival 2's second fight, Thief missed SIX times in a row despite having 75% accuracy.
@@llSuperSnivyllI saw that, evil pokemon moment
Ironically, the move you discounted at the start of the game would have been an answer to Exeggutor; Megahorn. You would have to learn it in place of Ice bean after Giovani, but you can buy another Ice Beam TM since you had enough money to buy Thunderbolt which in the end did not get used. You might have to teach the second Ice Beam before Lance for the Dragonite in the place of Earthquake, and then use the TM for Earthquake to swap back for the Champion, but that might not even be needed as you still got though with Rock Slide and just tanking an Outrage so might even be better to invest in some Carbos for the speed range on Pigeot. Megahorn still has bad accuracy, so you may still get some resets, but overall it has a better chance of getting through the Exeggutor than waiting for Hydro Pump to miss or a flinch from Rock Slide.
2 Carbos probably would've been enough at the levels he reached
Not sure I understand the numbers correctly, but it looks like a three-hit Rock Blast would have killed Starmie. That should be about 50% (64/125), compared to the 30% paralyze chance.
came here to say the same thing. C'mon scott, where's that detail orientation you always brag about!!!!
I'm so happy that you've discovered how Sub strat = best strats :) I didn't know about that Elixir on Route 25. Thank you for including little bits like that.
As after as useful berries go - there's a Lum berry in front of the Pokémon league. It's the small shadow on the left side of the screen as soon as you can turn left exiting Victory Road. It's a nice "cure-all" when facing the 3 different status conditions that Agatha's lead Gengar can throw at you. Thanks for another great video!
If only he went for the round 2 elite 4 like you 😉
@@Chronoflation I've been learning a new game myself. It's definitely a process, going from being super competent/confident in one game to feeling like a new player darn near. I respect the learning process, and I'm so happy to have more FireRed content to watch!
For future mons weak to Lorelei, it's worth noting that her Cloyster only has Dive as an attacking move, so if you have Protect it can't hit you and you can set up a Substitute going into the rest of the fight.
A rockblast with 3 hits would've already oneshot the starmie the entire time, it was 75% x 80% to hit, much more likely than secret power paralysis
This might be a hot take, but the entire Rhyhorn evolutionary line is my favorite in the entire franchise. Very excited to see how Rhydon does! I love its absurdly large movepool
If that includes that abomination from Gen 4, than that's really a hot take. That aside, many people love Rhydon since it's the first of all pokemon.
Rhydon with eviolite it's really good
@@fabizabo I absolutely am including Rhyperior, I don't think it's an abomination, I love it!
Not my absolute favourite but definitely an S tier favourite pokemon selection!
Weakness Policy Rhyperior was crushing competitive in Gen 8 for a while. It may be a bit overdesigned to some, and I do wish it's body was more dinosaur like Rhydon's, but it's a good mon, especially in trick room
I love watching your videos I’m watching this one for the second time. It’s oddly therapeutic and calming
WOOOOOOOO lets goooo! This big cutie pie has been my favourite since the beginning, he slow but him chomk and cute
he got under 2 hours, so happy and loved this one! Thanks Scott
On the sixteenth day of December, Scott's Thoughts gave to me:
Giovanni's aces finally winning
The tapirs using hypnosis
The 'King of emerald loafing
A lively mid stage slashing
The Johto trio roaming
Surge's 'Chu with a competent trainer
Classy Cat v Pig Monkey!
A moonstone evolution
The "Rhydon of gen three"
A Pure Power powerhouse
Wattson's ace in Hoenn
'Phan v Ursaring!
A tiny turtle's bubble
The fire starter digging
A garden lizard's leech seed
And those three weirdo mons punching
Wait, what happened to "The tapirs giving hypnosis" like the comment of the previous vid?
@megariderfire1994 thanks! -- was going off of memory today; just fixed
@@shimmianNS Oh you're right. And I can see that, seems consistent so far.
Officially halfway🎉
I wonder if Rock Blast would be more consistent against Misty. Secret Power has a base power of 70 whereas 3 hits from Rock Blast would equate to 111 base power with STAB. Considering the damage Secret Power did I wouldn't be surprised if 3 hits from Rock Blast would finish it off.
That said I have no idea what the odds are for Rock Blast hitting more then 2 times and of course there is the accuracy to factor in so it might just end up being as inconsistent as fishing for the paralysis.
It’s around a 65% to hit 3 or more times
I really like the golem looking pokemon like rhydon, aggron and tyranitar from the early gens.
The newer attempts fall pretty flat for me
Definitely some interesting play in this one. Room for optimization when you come back to these games after you’ve mapped things out, for sure.
Wondering what would be the damage range of 3 rock blast and it that would make Misty more consistent?
Thought the same, that was a pain to watch.
Death, considering 2 hits already is slightly stronger than secret power. Dig is the real question, with net 90 base power. It'd be close, I think, but should do it
i wanna give you a few advice that might be useful for a second playthrough of rhydon: for Misty it's more reliable rock blast due to the fact that it hits always harder than secret power; in the vermilion city Pokémon center there's the vs seeker to refight trainers in case you need to grind; last advice instead of keeping ice beam or thunderbolt since two very problematic Pokémon were slowbro and exeggutor, both weak to megahorn i suggest using that move that surely destroys exeggutor due to the quad weakness, and probably kills also slowbro. Anyway love your content, i follow you since you started and seeing that you made so far it's fantastic. Keep it up man❤
I'm gonna miss daily December. Really awesome to have a video to watch/listen to in bed every night
talking of "Daily December" here in the West we have a nice little tradition. Some kind of Calender, a Painting whit 24 Doores, one for every Day of December until Christmas. Every Door has a small picture made out of Cocolate in it.
So your Project is basicly a Solo Run Advents Kalender. Nice
Misty and Lorelei are gonna give final boss vibes for poor rhino.
Grab the Vs seeker in vermillion poke center from the girl next to Nurse Joy. Then I recommend the bug catch in the route above that has a level 20 butterfree as it gives over 800 XP and not much in the way of attacking moves. Gives good exp yields
If he does this, he better track his EVs
Rhydon can be a very useful Pokémon! A great physical wall, and STAB earthquake with that massive attack stat is ridiculously powerful
First Vigroth and Rydon are two of my fav mons 🙌🏼. I know you have been pushing out a lot of content I appreciate it alot ❤️
Really unlucky against Misty. Other solution might be a 4 or 5 hit with Rock Blast or the speed decrease by Rock Tomb.
Rock Tomb would have been great to keep, I agree.
3 rock blasts would have killed 4 is unnecessary
Scott, when you finally start using the Vs. Seeker for Pokemon that require extensive training like this, be sure to consider EVs with exp. If you have a choice between peak EXP with bad EVs and decent enough EXP with needed EVs, always go for the EV trainers. Will help with outspeeding Pidgeot later on, or improving a damage roll as needed. Definitely should be included in your optimization stage once your software is up and running for this
I was so happy to see this cause rhyhorn is my fav Pokémon.
MDB also posted a rhyhorn video this is truly an awesome day for solo challenges
A girl in the Vermilion city gives you the VS seeker, with that you could ave re-matches with the defeated trainers
Love your videos bro. I will say, I'm finding myself missing some of that classic Scott's thoughts humor. I know you don't want a repeat of the old Grimer video but throw in a couple jokes for us OG's. Love ya bro, Merry Christmas 🎄
Substitute is super appropriate for Rhydon since the substitute doll kind of looks like a Rhydon
The perfect video to prepare me for my upcoming mono-rock run of FRLG! Or mono-ground. That would be much less painful.
Something useful for training in the Gen 3 Remakes: You can get the Vs. Seeker from the Cooltrainer in the Vermillion City Pokemon Center. It might matter for pokemon who struggle with Misty, since it allows for Trainer EXP yields instead of Wild EXP Yields.
Hell yeah! full dratini line as Arceus intended
My favorite Pokemon. Still waiting for a playthrough in Yellow. Can't wait for it getting obliterated by 4x effective bubble, watergun or razor leaf 😂
He did a Rhyhorn playthrough there already in case you haven't checked that out yet.
@@zenitfan4life I know, thanks! Have watched all his videos for more than 2 years.
I'm specifically excited for rhydon since this big boy is my No. 1 guy in every playthrough.
I really hope you'll beat the Elite 4 round 2 in the post game, which is the the true end to FRLG !
They have pokemons with a higher level and a better movepool too, which could be really challenging !
Scott, first of all I agree with many others saying that rock blast for misty is much better than secret power, you could have won earlier. Secondly, i think that bulbasaur would have been a better starter for the rival. Thinking about his alternatives, if he takes squirtle, the grass type will be exeggutor which has a terribile movepool and is not a threat for rhydon. If he take bulbasaur, the water type will be gyarados so 2 threats for rhydon
Edit: i forgot that in 3rd gen exeggutor has a better movepool, i was thinking about red and blue, so nevermind blastoise is fine
Pretty challenging! Rock/ground Pokemon are really specially frail. But certainly golem line will be a even tougher challenge. That's gonna hurt!
Big fan of the fire red runs. Especially round 2 runs
Always a great job. Overlay on brocks gym didn't show -1 -2 Def but showed the correct calculation
Oh my gosh You're doing my Favourite Pokemon-Line!~ Its a total Honour to watch this episode(just like all your other videos runs) --Go Rhyhorn/Rhydon! 🤎
I'm Rooting for their successful placement!
Wooooo one of my favorite Gen 1 mons
I'm enjoying theses so much thank you Scott for your awesome content keep up your awesome videos and I remember I used a ryhdon in one of my team members when I played it I named it Rhino and it was pretty good as a tank as you have said
Has anyone else been hearing the occasional high pitched ringing in the fire red videos? I noticed a couple in the hypno playthrough yesterday as well as in todays video at the 15:02 mark
These fire red videos are really cool.
A jolly nature and using rock blast vs misty could've really helped rhydon, a careful nature is also something to consider with all these mons that have very low spdef and speed so they need to end up tanking a hit
I think Scott has explained in the past that neutral natures are used, so it's the Pokemon's capability being tested as opposed to a competitive build as that can skew results due to being an independact factor.
Then again, I suppose Vigoroth and Slaking were Naughty, so maybe I'm thinking of another PokeTuber's rules.
@@tomforge614 i believe you're right and he only does natures for emerald, slaking was actually the one that made me think about using a careful nature first as it has roadblocks that can only be overcome by tanking enough hits
@@alwayskindasleepy69I did the calcs his Rhydon would have ko'ed regardless of the nature in 3 hits at lvl 34, it's a 38% chance for a rock blast to hit 3 times
Cool Trainer Warren; The People’s Viridian Gym Leader!
Awesome Substitute strats my man!
Love to see it!
Channel artist did Rhydon dirty in the thumbnail. Get my man a push-up bra.
I love this Rocky disaster so much
Rhyhorn and Rhydon have kaiju (Godzilla)-theme TM access. That’s why they get surf, blizzard, etc.
Yet they lack the Special Attack to actually take advantage of those moves. At least Ttar has usable Special Attack.
Thinking here, what if you kept Megahorn and deleted EQ before Lance then taught it instead of Ice Beam via TM for the champion? That way Exeggutor would not be that much of a pain. Great run nonetheless!
I always respected GameFreak's bold decision to make Poison Point a 100% chance in FR/LG for the player attacking only
Oh great Scott!!
The answer for Misty was Rock Blast. As it could've one shotted with a 3 hit Stab which is a 50% chance, instead of fishing for a paralysis which is a 30%.
One thing you can do that i've noticed you don't - both Snorlaxes have 100% chance to hold a leftovers, which regenerates your pokemons a little bit over time, and i do believe it's powerful enough to cancel out poison. You should be able to catch a snorlax (and it's a good HM-slave) or just use Thief on it to steal the item anyway
The snorlaxes actually hold chesto berries. To get the leftovers you need to use the ItemFinder on the spot where slorlax was. As this is a solo challenge, he can't catch the 30 pokemon needed to recieve the ItemFinder from Oaks Aide
Scott you're a Legend
while mentioning the substitute, I wondered if you could equip the leftovers for some passive healing
but nope... it's essentially blocked off (you NEED to use the itemfinder after beating Snorlax, and you can only get the itemfinder after "obtaining" 30 pokemon, which effectively locks it off for a solo-challenge perspective)
I always loved rhyhorn’s design. But yeah… between a bad move pool and an extremely bad typing it never really got a spot on my team. This poor Pokémon deserved way better than game freak ever gave it.
Great video dude!
I look forward to the one day in the future optimized run where you realize that rock blast is way better than secret power for Misty since it would definitely take out Starmie in 3 hits, which is the majority of the time when it lands, and Dig might even just barely be able to get a 1 hit (this will require testing), and that Megahorn is WAY better late game than fire blast, both using your more powerful physical attack, being super effective against all the psychic types in the league, and 4x for Exeggutor, and is basically neutral at worst for everything Lorelai and Champion
Am I going nuts or did Scott not go over why he went for Squirtle over Bulbasaur?
I expect Bulbasaur would be the harder battle since you end up getting double intimidated by Gyarados and Arcanine.
i'm really looking forward to the second run throughs. There are going to be some massive shake ups I reckon. And it doesn't feel right seeing things that could be done differently being left unfixed. Perhaps you could release the first attempts to the Patreons, get their feedback, and then do the second run? Though I guess that's kind of what you have been doing you clever little sausage!
I can't wait to see how much time you can shave off once you've properly "learned" FR/LG :D
From a design perspective, Brock is suppose to teach you the importance of the difference between physical and special moves. With the three starters, you should have Ember, Bubble or Vine Whip for Brock. Even Ember which isn't super effective is going to be doing a lot more damage than most normal moves. It's also a place to learn the importance of the type chart if you didn't get to learn that earlier.
However, I agree that is quite possible to learn the wrong lessons from Brock. If a player isn't willing to experiment with either new moves or new pokemon, they face quite like a grind, although usually not as bad as what happened to Rhydon at Misty. Alas the solo play style duplicates this behaviour.
I can’t wait for when you start doing black and white. I wanna see how you somehow win with both Unfezants 😂
*Obi-Wan Kenobi’s voice*
The Rock Blast Scott. Use the Rock Blast against the Starmie Scott.
I can't believe you didn't call out the rival's pidgeotto!
Pidgeotto: *uses one sand attack, then spams damaging moves*
Ryhorn: *misses thief 6 times in a row*
1 in 4000 odds. Not to mention missing the first rock tomb, and an 80% range on the second one to OHKO pidgeotto. Admittedly you got some good luck that fight too, but that is half of raw shiny odds just missing theif
If a second playthrough were to be done in the distant future...who here believes a maybe Hasty nature (not really sure about Jolly in this case despite it's horrendous special attack) would've been ideal for the Rhydon line in Fire Red?
Also, I'm sure you would really like Pinsir...while yes, probably not good because early game Brock. It has the Hyper Cutter ability to block Feather Dance and Intimidate, it has good coverage (Rock Slide, Earthquake, Brick Break), and it knows Bulk Up and Swords Dance. I'm sure it would also be pretty decent overall and it's one of the more underrated Pokemon in Fire Red IMO.
Sooo, a few thoughts:
- Erika my beloved
- why not use Megahorn for Alakazam and Eggman?
- haha imagine a special Rhydon 😅
It was a fun video
a fair number of things went wrong in this run. rock blast the starmie has been mentioned a hundred times, megahorn to take out exeggutor wouldve been huge, what about just not evolving at 42, get earthquake and evolve at 52? a little bit more training around koga and sabrina to get the levels and youll end up at 54 or 55 in giovannis gym with earthquake to obliterate him, forget the poison point entirely. couldve shaved off a good 20 minutes or so maybe
Scott getting poisoned and casually walking to a random to to pull out an antidote. The boss moves of a player who has memoriesd hidden item locations.
I am already concerned that substitute will be overused. We will see.
Frustratingly slow despite it's incredible Attack. It felt like it was just a few points too slow for almost every key battle! Overall, it feels like FRLG significantly higher level to beat due to deeper opponent movepools and less exploitable AI.
Also noticed the Rock Blast for Misty strategy a lot of others have mentioned, that would make her a lot more consistent in a future optimized playthrough. Another thing you should consider is the Sevii Islands for runs that need additional training. The dialogue does take a bit of time, but it gives access to more relatively high leveled trainer Pokemon, an extra Rare Candy, and the Move Reminder.
For Misty, I feel like you could just black out instead of resetting every time you lose. It might be a bit more time between tries, but the exp would have helped.
The first Pokémon.
After you beat the rival on the SS Anne you said you needed to battle against wild Pokemon? So you get an item from the NPC in the Vermillion City Pokemon Center called the VS Seeker. You use it and nearby trainers have a chance to respond, get an exclaimation point above them, and you can rebattle them! I challenged the two trainers above the city which both give Speed EVs, which I feel like could've helped especially in the early game. It's also a good way to get more money too!
Coming from your more planned-out RBY runs, these FRLG runs are so frustrating to watch.
(Shout out to anyone who reads “so frustrating” in Scott’s voice. 😂)
11:00 do remember that you have a move that can 1 shot starmie... Rock blast
For the Misty fight, is it possible the reason it took so long to get a Paralysis that your muscle memory was so good that you were consistently hitting the exact same frames on each reset?
For misty you did get rather unlucky but statistically viable. The way to figure it out is more looking at the odds of it not happening so in this case there is a 7/10 chance not to paralyze. You had 10 fails when you went back to misty and won on your 11th attempt
1-((7/10)^1) means that there is a 98% chance you would have had a paralysis by then. In comparison after just 3 tries you would have had almost a 66% chance or better than a coin flip. Oh the joy of statistical probability
When you were at lvl 32 or lvl 34 at Misty you could have gone for Rock Blast!! It would need a couple of attempts but would have been much faster than secret power
Ahh yess, slowbro the ground/rock type pokemon 😂
This is an unusual Yellow Slowbro run 🤔
Considering the main weaknesses that cause you grief are special and the critical outspeeds were narrow, I think a Careful or Jolly nature would have helped a fair bit in this case.
Scott you beat summoningsalt today for first video I want to watch 😅
20:42 Berries have a chance of respawning every 1500 steps. You do have an unlimited amount of berries in the playthroughs.
15:04 Yaaaay, my favorite move.
Im not sure where double edge is in FR, but that would've been decent vs return in some situations when considering rock head :p
Maybe a tip for a future Rhydon playthrough, a special defense or speed boosting nature could probably really work in it's favor. Either moving first more, or living a hit better. Maybe something to consider.
Nature is a 10% modifier
30 base something only goes up to 33
It's best used to make the pokemon better at what he's good at
But it's true that rhydon just needed a few speed point multiple time so.. maybe
@@ryomaanime4563 Remember that natures have a bigger impact than you think. While of course 10% of a low stat is not great, it's still something. Maybe just enough to outspeed some things or to live mainly Starmie's water pulse more consistently.
Dratini line for my birthday hurray! One of my favorite lines in kanto
For fast training on Wild Pokemon Pre Gym 2-3 you can use a repel in Diglets Tunnel and fight nothing but level 30 Dugtrio
Ya know, I was really expecting Erika to be a lot worse. Glad to see I was wrong!
It’s a good thing Sabrina didn’t have the water / grass type Venemoth on her team!
I know you did this play though a while ago but pidgeys and ratattas give speed evs for future references
Against Lorelei, it seems like setting up the substitute would have been a better choice against the Cloyster.
So I think the cloyster range where it did not get the one shot was because you saved 2 more rare candies, putting rhydon only at level 68 instead of 70. This did give you two more candies at Agatha so idk, take that how you will lol
If Rock Blast were to hit Starmie 4 or 5 times, I am pretty sure it would faint without all that luck based strategy
Bulbasaur is 100% the harder starter in this case because of that double intimidate. I'd even say it's harder for any physical attacker: even those that do well against venusaur
The Giovani fight has me confused. Ground doesnt resist ground, STAB dig will one-shot the Nidos and at least one if not both the Rhyhorns. Why use return into the rock type? Why delete the move that one-shots almost the whole team with a special move with half as much special attack? The only mon that could have even survived would have been Ryhorn 2 and even that may have gone down. Absolute worst case is 5 turns of poison damage.
Is there something I'm misunderstanding here?
A very strong pokemon, but it's not gonna be an easy go of it.
Waiting for level 42 is gonna be brutal. Especially because training a rhyhorn is the worst
