    I have ideas on how to improve this process like:
    1) Make it possible to print multicolor lithophanes on a stock 3D printer,
    2) Make it possible to print the white portion vertically,
    3) Allow the user to add their own custom color palettes!
    4) Add your ideas in the comments!

      It isn't hard at all. It just takes patience, as you have to pause between colour changes, let the head cool down, then heat it back up enough to do an 'atomic pull', followed by inserting the next colour. I've done multi-colour prints directly onto fabric with my i3 clone, and it works quite well.

    I am totally down for some info so you cam print a color lithophane with a stock 3D printer (I have an Anet A8 ). I've been looking to upgrade to a multi-color printer using a regular inkjet technology, but the market hasn't fully jumped on board (but progressing nicely) for low cost multi color 3d printing. I love your site and my friends due to since they are the ones getting the free stuff as I work on mastering the technique. So any development on multi color 3d printed lithophanes is what I would LOVE to see. Thank you so much for all the work you have done...
    Also, I plan on testing the water on translucent filament, glow in the dark filament, and if there are any differences with ABS, PLA, & PETG lithophanes....

    I would to print these on a stock printer. Would you print each color layer separately and stack them together? Would you have to print a white layer to start each color layer? Would you have to add pauses in the gcode and determine which color to change to? Jason mentioned 16 color changes, would that be one for each color on each color layer? I think I could get a working color litho from these questions or am I missing some components of the process? Maybe I should just save up for a Palette 2... lol

      Print the litho on your 3d printer, then print the same image (flipped), the same size, onto that paper with an inkjet printer. Peel off the adhesive backing, and stick to the backside of your litho. Will look like plain plastic without a light, and when the light is turned on you can clearly see the color image. • @android4cg
      @android4cg 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I really think lot of MMU2S users would be interested. But i think it makes only sense if the color range would benefit significant, otherwise it will only increase the price for required filament rolls. Colorfabb offers also "color on demand" which could be useful to have optimized source color? You could ask them if they are interested to offer "color lithophane kit" with 4 or 5 rolls of filament. Just as an idea so solve the egg/chicken problem and push your great project. ;-)

    • @android4cg
      @android4cg 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      One more comment to avoid misunderstanding. The MMU2 supports 5 filaments which would mean than we could use 4 colors plus white filament. Most of the ink printers use 3 colors to mix the color palette. So i guess 3 colors plus white is already very good starting point. If we would go for 4+1 than adding black for contour or grey could be also good approach. WDYT?

      The method that I would implement to create multicolor lithophanes with a single nozzle 3D printer would be based upon Devin Montes' video that you can find below. The first layer would contain as many colors as the maker is willing to make color swaps, and then the remaining layers would be a regular white lithophane. What do you think?

    • @KeithOlson
      @KeithOlson 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cool idea! Some ideas to improve it:
      1. Offer bitmap tracing by colour region, like Inkscape can do. This wouldn't be the best option for very complicated images, but would offer better resolution and simpler printing for less complicated images.
      2. Allow clients to upload images of calibration prints. The prints just need to have steps that go from 0.05(?)mm to 2.0mm(?) and the pictures should be taken on a piece of white paper that is lit from the back. That would provide both colour *and* transparency data. If the client provided images from all of their filament, then the image can be simplified using those and the necessary filament ID's returned with the lithophane. This would help ensure that the colours of the lithophane match the original image as accurately as possible.
      3. Offer colour mixing with stacking STL's. As this would *highly* depend on the properties of the filament that the client is using, they would need to supply calibration images to pull both colour and transparency data from. As the height of every layer is determined when the lithophane is being created, I'm pretty sure that generating a small blob at 0mm(Z) off to the side and the rest of the STL at the desired height would allow slicers to play nice.
      4. Support RAL/Pantone/etc. colour systems and filaments that use them--with (affiliate?) links. This will ensure the greatest colour accuracy.
      5. Start a service to print them. As it has been proven that it is entirely possible to print with 64(!) difference colours (th-cam.com/video/e051w27k6W0/w-d-xo.html), if you used one of the 3d printers with a belt bed, you could churn them out 24/7, only needing to pause printing to change spools. (You don't need to start with 64, of course! Four is good enough to start, as you proved, and adding a second Palette would bring the total number available up to 7, which should be enough for most images if colour mixing is used.)
      Does that make sense?

  • @aytunch
    @aytunch 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wow you are at it again:D This is too smart. However I am sure it should not be too hard to implement color lithophanes with a stock 3D printer. A carefully made gcode which pauses for filament change can be managed imho. The colors are all in same layer right? and also do the colors take up only one layer? if thats the case we will only change filament 4 times manually. If it takes more than 1 layer for the colors to show up nicely we can alter the gcode to use adaptive layer heights and we can make white portion's layer height very low(precise) and the bottom color layer height to be very high so that the colors show up and we don't need to do multiple sets of filament change. What do you think about this? Also I have sent you an email a while ago about a request for lamp shades which are not cylindrical but conical just like the real ones. Is there any updates on that? thanks for the great work. PS. if you will support stock printers, there is no need to limit the color palette by 4. just a reminder:)

    • @LithophaneMaker
      @LithophaneMaker  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can do a lot of amazing things with smart slicing. Make some colored lithophane stls and maybe you can figure out how to print one with few filament swaps

    • @Sembazuru
      @Sembazuru 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If your printer has auto unload and load capabilities, all you need to do in the slicer assign the different colors to different tools (extruders). And then for the toolchange gcode enter in a message to tell you which tool (color) to switch to and a filament change code. (For my Prusa MK3 that is M600 for the filament change, I forget the message code off the top of my head... M117 or M115, or something similar.) Start the print and either pull out a book or pull up your desired streaming service. When the printer beeps, look up from your book/video and manually change the filament. I've sucessfully done this for 2 color prints, but 4 color prints should be easy enough, just tedious.

    Hey Thomas. Have you had any experience with the prusa mk3s mmu2s upgrade? If so, whats your opinion of it compared to the Pallete 2?

    • @LithophaneMaker
      @LithophaneMaker  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do not, but I see many people with a mk3s who tried and MMU and ending up buying a Palette

      @@LithophaneMaker Thanks for the reply. I have the mk3s and have been mulling over multi material options for some time. Haven't gotten anything yet as the technology still seems very experimental and unreliable. I'll be keeping my eye on the pallete 2 from now on

    what type of infill would be used on this type of print? I am trying to print with the Prusa MMU2s

    Do you think that this could be done with a ink transfer paper instead of multiple extrusion ?

    • @LithophaneMaker
      @LithophaneMaker  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it could be. I made this tool because I think that eventually multicolor 3D printing will drop in price significantly and become fairly common. For example, the MMU by Prusa has 2 motors, a lead screw and some extruder gears, so I expect it could be below $100 in the future. Hopefully they can figure out how to make it work well.

      @@LithophaneMaker It's getting to be reliable. I haven't used mine recently (too busy with other things) but I got it to the point where I could depend on it. One subtlety that I don't see others talking about is that the PLA has to be super-dry. Cooking the spools in a 50C oven for a couple of hours before printing seems to do the trick. It ensures that the tips of the filament, when they are pulled from the hot zone, are non-stringy. And stringyness really messes up the MMU2s -- throws its sensing of where the tip is, and that's before the strings break off entirely and really mess things up. No strings -> reliable if everything else is just right.

    What do you mean by 13% increase of filament usage for the waste tower?Isn't it more like 130%?

    • @LithophaneMaker
      @LithophaneMaker  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, the waste tower was 10 g and the lithophane was 77 g. The presence of the waste tower caused 13% more filament usage than if there had been no waste tower

    Please allow us to print using a "stock" printer. I wouldn't mind changing filaments manually. I'm still waiting for my ankermake v6 to ship out.

    I thought I would drop you a note. I saw Jason Preuss at ERRF 2019 and he pointed me to your site for color lithophanes. I'm excited to start using it to be able to add color to my lithophanes. I use a Prusa I3 MK3S, but don't have a Pallete nor the Prusa MMU2 so I'll be manually changing filaments. (Going to have to bring a book to pass the time between filament changes...).
    My idea:
    Would it be possible for users to create thier own custom pallets to be able to use their preferred filaments? The end user could use a color senser (like a TCS34725 like AdaFruit has here www.adafruit.com/product/1334 or here www.adafruit.com/product/1356 ) and then import to your tool the RGB colors found for each of the 4 filaments. Obviously some sort of advice for choosing filaments would be needed.
