    I made a round lithophane for my wife for Christmas on my CR-10. It is 8" in diameter with four family photos and took 50 hours to print. I built a base and top so it can rotate with a stepper motor. Still working on the mechanics as I had to upgrade my printer to a Volcano recently and it got put on hold. I intend to put the files on Thingiverse and the build onto Instructables when I get things working correctly. I love these things too.

    Hey joe!! Lithopanes are absolutely amazing... seriously I have orders for people that want them like crazy and have been using that money to try and get another printer so I can batch them out even faster! I’m finishing an order now with 13 pics and one thing I have come across is with my printer is to turn it about 45 degrees in the slicer and that can help get rid of some of the ghosting if you ever come across that. Other than that I can’t tell you how many ppl are absolutely amazed with these things and can actually make you a little bit of extra money.

    If a flat lithopane is all your looking for you can use Cura ( all versions ), just drag and drop a jpg file on to the Cura build plate and adjust the settings to your liking.
    If you print it flat I heard that you must turn off retraction or you will jam your nozzle so it would be best to rotate it 90°. I tried printing flat without retraction and I had so much stringing I just threw it away.

    Great Vid, I followed your instruction and got a perfect print. (Using Cura 15.04). But after the first two prints, I noticed the string support on the back of the print when using outer curve. Not sure if I made changes from 2nd to third print. but the string support on the rear is bit much to clean up. The first print was very smooth and the third print, a little ruff, any ideas???

      Use photoshop. Adjust colours automatically. Convert to black and white. Adjust brightness and contrast to something nice. Go to levels and use the auto function to make white and black the two extremes.

    It looks like you replaced the glass bed on your printer. I just got my CR-10S and I can't get a lithophane to stay in place. I even tried sanding the glass, which helped a little, but after it gets past 1 inch tall, it starts to lift. I'm printing with PLA and have a bed temp of 72.

    I wish more 3d makers would use CURA or some other free software instead of Simplify3d. If someone is just getting into the 3d printing game that 150 is more often not available. However your videos are always on point! Keep up the great work.

      I know what you mean Randall Bourque. I used Slic3r when I started 3DP. Although I liked the look and features of S3D, I pondered it for a few weeks before shelling out on it. But I'm glad I did.
      However. These days, the free slicers have come a long way since then so I doubt I would make the same decision now because there is a lot less difference between them now.

    • @electronron1
      @electronron1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The one feature of simplify 3D that appeals to me is the custom supports and for that I use Craftware which is free.
      Craftware has one quirk that I don't like and that is that it runs the startup G code before it starts heating the Bed and Nozzle which means if you use a nozzle wipe in your start G code you must manually pre-heat before starting your print.

    • @ryamoo
      @ryamoo 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      electronron1 can't you add a "heat and wait" command to your start-up g code?

    • @electronron1

      I tried it but it didn't work but that was version 1.14 Beta. They just released 1.15 which I just downloaded. Some big improvements in this version so maybe it will work now.

    • @DrewLakebrink
      @DrewLakebrink 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree, but the settings translate over to Cura. Speed, resolution, print temps, etc aren't unique to S3D or any other slicer. The menu structure is different, but they're the same at their core. I just wish we could get custom supports in Cura.

    You would get better results if you increase the tickness of the lithophane and turn it black and white manually before importing. That way you will be able to adjust the contrast to have a better looking image. Personal opinion, your lithophane could use a bit more contrast. Good video as usual! :P

    Does PETG give you anything more than PLA for lithophanes?

    • @jdufresne1
      @jdufresne1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      John temperature resistance. Petg softens and melts at a higher temp than normal pla. If using pla, I'd prob suggest a low watt LED light source if used as a lamp. Also pla will eventually melt in sunlight after a while if it's a window sill decoration.
      If used in normal room temp and not as a light shade then I'm sure pla could work. Designing one this weekend to try and print myself in eSun PLA plus.

    You can now upload photo's directly into the cura software :)

  • @and7barton
    @and7barton 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can do most of this using plain old Windows PAINT. Again, convert your photograph to black and white, and save as a bitmap. Even out any bright skin highlights. The backgrounds look best as dense black. Again draw over them using PAINT graphics. CURA will process them, even providing a range of adjustment options. I'm just experimenting now with creating objects just using PAINT. Sloping objects can be created by laying down strips of gradually lightening shades of grey. Doing it this way, the print is made flat on its back on the bed, not standing up.

  • @aaronbrown7750

    • @rjc0234

      I think you can in Cura, but no customisability.

    • @and7barton
      @and7barton 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. I'm just experimenting with this now. You can by-pass Blender by designing simple objects using Windows PAINT. Just remember to use black, white and all shades of grey in between. The only downside is that you can't design features on vertical sides of objects which you obviously can using Blender.

    At the 5 min point, you said 20 mm per second, yet the setting says mm/min. As you, I use Simplify3D so I am confused as mine is always set at 4000.00 mm/min -- 20 seems horrifically slow comparatively speaking

    Did you use 100% infill or 0% infill and just adjust the number of items outer shells?

      I used 100% infill, however having 3 perimeters should cover it without infill anyway as it’s not thick at all
