  • Just assembled my Anet A8 3D Printer and the display reads def on both the extruder and the hotbed, truly a bummer. I've been researching the problem and how to fix it, so this is my video of how to diagnose the problem and how to fix it. Hopefully this helps some people out, there will be many videos to come when I get this thing up and running!
    I have a topic dedicated to getting this printer running because of this problem, feel free to check it out for a detailed description on how to troubleshoot it and get it working.

    Thanks man helped me A LOT. I did not connect both thermistors to the board and thought my mainboard was grilled. Everything works now. Have a nice day

    My printer works fine until an hour or two in and then the def code shows for both temps. It keeps "printing" but the nozzle and bed both stop heating, so it's not extruding anymore at that point.

    • @RevampedOutdoors
      @RevampedOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Have you tried test the outputs of each? Sometimes only one giving an error will shut them both off. Hopefully it is just one of them, the mainboards can go bad as well. If you test the output and check all connections and they are good it may be a main board issue.

    I'm getting 99-100.4 so that's not the problem... Ik it's the hotbed throwing up errors because I tested the hotend too, I'll try updating frimware and see where that gets me, otherwise I have a fried main board :/

    Is there a way to not connect the heated bed and just print without it? The bed itself stopped working and I don't necessarily need to heat up the bed for PLA anyway. Would be a shame if I had to buy a new heated bed for nothing

    • @RevampedOutdoors
      @RevampedOutdoors  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could always look into loading a new version of marlin configured for no heat bed, I'm sure someone has made one for the A8, it would be good for added protection too.

  • @seanmmcclain

    Thanks for a great video. As I was watching the video and starting to take my printer apart I found the culprit. My printer gave the same error as described. The bed temperature showed -51 as the printer booted, then the extruder and bed both showed "def". When I removed the connector for the bed thermistor I found that one of the thermistor wires had broken - probably due to fatigue. I gently removed the receptacle from the connector body by depressing the retention tab, then soldered the wire back on and reinstalled the receptacle into the connector body. I'm very pleased to have repaired my printer without having to buy parts. This printer has been in service since October 2016. I have printed hundreds of items. This is the first repair so far.

    • @RevampedOutdoors
      @RevampedOutdoors  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would try and test the thermistor for the hotend and see if that one is throwing the error. If not that, it may be a main board issue, you could try uploading new firmware (which I suggest anyway) to see if that can solve the problem. Marlin would be my suggestion, also check all the connections to make sure something isn't loose and not connecting properly. I hope those suggestions can help!

    Thank you for the video. One very important point to mention is to disconnect the hotbed connector off of the arduino board. Resistance could be inaccurate due to other circuitry on the arduino board. I did this with my old Anet A8 unit and it has not given me any issues for years now. My 2nd Anet A8 dual extruder is starting to give me thermal runaway errors and heating failure errors. Thanks to your video, I remembered the trouble with my original unit. Kind regards and again tks for the video. Regards from South Africa.

    Can you link to what hot bed thermistor you bought? I looked on Amazon and there is a lot.

    • @RevampedOutdoors
      @RevampedOutdoors  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I ended up using Ebay to get a 5 pack, but that auction has been relisted and this is now the alternative r.ebay.com/yBZsH0
      These should work just fine, basically if they meet the criteria of the 100k NTC and the seller states they are for 3D printers you are generally OK. I say generally because if you are looking for a thermistor for your hot end (into the heat block) those thermistors will be smaller. The ones I purchased were about 75% larger in diameter than the stock one but they did recess in the hot bed hole. They work great and actually are a little bit more responsive than the stock one and pressure from the wire holds them securely to the bottom of the bed.
      If you are looking for the hot end thermistor it would be good to ask the seller for the diameter of the thermistor and make sure it will fit into the small diameter hole next to the heater core in your hot end. I hope this makes sense! I hope you get it fix!

      For some reason TH-cam flagged this comment and I didn't see it until now. I'm sure you have figured it out by now but for other people having the same problem. It could be that the SD card is corrupted or not formatted correctly or has not been initialized in the menu of the printer. If you turn the printer on before the card is inserted sometimes you need to select INT card in the menu before it recognizes it.

      @RevampedOutdoors  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are too many possibilities to list them all. We need some more information to help, does it get any power? Does it display any messages? Is the LCD on? Does the main board light up? How are the connections, all secure? Is the main power supply outputting 12v? Is the switch on the power supply set to your countries AC voltage?

    • @Sazul_IRL
      @Sazul_IRL 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Revamped Outdoors i’m with 220V and it worked every times, and just today the printer is on but when I want to preheat or print something it restart, and it makes this every time, no error messages, just that I can’t start a print or preheat, i touched anything...

    • @RevampedOutdoors
      @RevampedOutdoors  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Sazul_IRL check your connections for the hotbed and the nozzle, it seems to me that there is a short somewhere when you preheat so it restarts. Maybe try to just preheat one or the other. Try to heat the bed seperately from the nozzle then bozzle feom the bed. See which one causes the error condition. Then check the wires and connections for the thermistor and the power to the one that causes the issue. If either the bed or nozzle alone causes restart with warming i would check the solder on the main board. Look for anything that looks hot or melted. Otherwise if everything looks good you can always try to flash new firmware to see if that helps.

      Bed thermistor and hotend thermistor are two different thermistors in two different locations, I would try to determine which is faulty or replace both to see if the error disappears.

    • @RevampedOutdoors
      @RevampedOutdoors  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      GymBoyB it sounds like it could be a couple different things. Does it stop the print at the same layer each time? Or does it stop at different heights each time? If it stops randomly at different heights or print time I would check the connections to the thermistors as there might be a loose connection and the right bounce or jiggle might disconnect the thermistor for a second and trip the error. Maybe it could be a firmware issue as well you could update to skynet to see if that is the issue if you haven't already. Maybe the connections to the main board are not as tight in the JST connector so they are throwing an error? Worse case scenario it could be the main board thermistor connections are bad but I don't say that lightly because that would be a last ditch option to replace the board.

    • @gymboybtroy5127
      @gymboybtroy5127 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't done anything to it yet and today it printed just fine no problems so ill get back to you if it stops working again but for now i am just going to be softer on it.

    • @johnpilkinton1592
      @johnpilkinton1592 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gymboybtroy5127 Sounds like a loose connection. Some times I could print 100% of an object and have no problems. Then start another one and it would give 'def' errors at different levels.

      @RevampedOutdoors  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Have you checked the wiring itself or the connections? Sometimes the connections can go bad on the wiring itself and will not read from the thermistor I know that can happen it's not as likely but you never know. If you're getting good readings from the thermistor at the JST connections and solid connections to the board then it could be the board connections too. I have heard of people needing to re-solder the board connections because they weren't the best from the factory. I hope you can figure it out, having a down printer absolutely is horrible.

    • @AntsRC
      @AntsRC 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Think you were right. I walked away and talked to myself for a while and went back. I tightened the JST plugs on the board by bending them slightly to make better contact and wham!! It's working again?? Time will tell, I'll see how it goes. Thanks for you help. This is the only problem I have had other wise it's been a great printer.
