    I'm an Australian living in Oregon USA. I watched a couple of your videos and loved them. I then went to number one and watched in order to 93 so I didn't miss any. The videos you are doing now could you please number them so I don't miss any.

    • @VeloObscura
      @VeloObscura  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Lindsay!
      We're so happy you enjoyed the videos! The fact that you went back and watched all of them is the biggest compliment we could receive! 🥰
      Video production has slowed down a lot since we got into the grind of daily life as we save for the next adventure, but if you're worried about missing anything, you can click the bell icon on our channel or videos to get notified whenever we upload. 😁
      Any series on the channel will be numbered like we did for the first one.
      Thanks again!

    all great tips, esp the fluro vest you will also get more truckies and pilot cars responding to you even when you rock up to the servo or roadhouse. makes huge difference esp if you are on your own..

    • @VeloObscura
      @VeloObscura  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely! You'll have experienced all the things we've mentioned at this point in your trip!
      I found the fluro vest a little annoying to take on and off,, so I might just go "full commit" and get one of those fluro polo shirts 😜

    Carry a snake bandage, an Epirb.Plus and beware of the road trains. if you're going super remote, tell someone.

    • @VeloObscura
      @VeloObscura  ปีที่แล้ว

      You just about listed all the ones in the second video! 😁
      Snake bandage is a great call!

    The fluro "thing" is a sort of attitude that you are a general cyclist, not one of the "lycra" cyclists who are often seen to be a nuisance on the roads. Hence why you noticed the more courteous drivers towards you when wearing "fluro".

    • @VeloObscura
      @VeloObscura  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I always thought it would be fairly obvious we weren't part of the "lycra crowd" when we were wearing flannel shirts and had 40kg worth of bags strapped to the bikes! 😆
      Guess the fluro shows we're trying to make an effort?

      @@VeloObscura no, it seems that if riders are willing to try better to be seen, drivers will also tend to be more of a better attitude towards those cyclists.

    Good tips there!! On the Fluro: another thing I've noticed is that a fluro vest makes you both more visible but also invisible. They see the fluro vested guy but not who it is. The number of people I know who don't recognize me in fluro is bizarre!!

    • @VeloObscura
      @VeloObscura  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Haha, that's hilarious! Maybe that's why we get more respect - they think it's a mate. 😆

    I did the Nullarbor from Perth solo in 2017. Great video and great tips.
    Other than what everyone else has said I’d recommend a rear view mirror.
    I had a helmet mounted one which enable me to see the big vehicles approaching from the rear and if they were giving me a wide berth or not.
    Most give you bags of room but if they’re cutting a tighter line it’s good to know in advance and you can pull to the side and avoid issues.
    Mostly that would be because there was another truck coming the other way that you couldn’t see but the truckie behind you can.
    In short I believe a rear view mirror can be the difference between being safe and not.

    • @VeloObscura
      @VeloObscura  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers, mate! Congrats on your Nullarbor crossing - it's awesome out there. We loved every moment!
      The mirror is a great tip. I had a handlebar mounted one and it didn't work out. The mirror itself was so tiny that I had to really lean in and squint at it to make anything out and that in itself was even more dangerous because I wasn't keeping my eye on the road!
      I've been keen to try a helmet-mounted one ever since, but haven't had the chance.
      Cheers!

    Thanks for the tips, Dave & Bonnie! I may have mentioned this before (hope not) but, when I was in Tassie, touring with a mate back in '68, we got permission to spend the night on the footy oval at Richmond. We were stoked, because we were allowed to use the showers, too! We used toeclips in those days (no spd then!) and I got my set-up 'sorted' at a bootmaker's in Devonport, before heading off on the tour. All I got was a rubber sole fitted on the bottom of the leather sole that was already there. It afforded enough grip (for me, at least) to ride right up Mt Wellington with camping gear on the bike. Definitely made it easier for lugging weights up hills.

    • @VeloObscura
      @VeloObscura  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fantastic, dream-situation for a touring cyclist there, Brian! You've mentioned your Tassie tour of '68, but not that particular story! Ovals and showgrounds are great for a camp.
      Now, obviously toe-clips are somewhat out of fashion, but I did find out that a lot of the "fixie" crew use webbing straps on their pedals. I always wondered if it would be a good alternative to being clipped in and then I met a touring cyclist who swears by them! Maybe it's something I'll investigate!

    A soft sun hat to wear under your helmet. You can wet them too.

    • @VeloObscura
      @VeloObscura  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! I have to wear a cycling cap under my helmet anyway because my scalp gets burned through the vents! Wetting it is a great idea!
      No doubt you've heard of "Da Brim."
      They look ridiculous, but I'm starting to think one may be necessary.

    New sub from the motorcycle community. I’ve often said us bikers have a lot to learn from cycling campers. I’m amazed at how small they can pick down and have started using some of their techniques on the motorbike 👍

    Great tips, but I might add...
    1. Never trust Google Maps
    2. Always carry more water than you think you need
    3. Put an Aussie flag on your bike it way helps with the fluoro 🤣.
    We follow each other on IG, didn't know you had a YT channel 👍

      The water thing we definitely adhere to! We ran out one time and learned the hard way!
      The Aussie flag is the bike-hack of the century! 😂
      Recognize you from Insta, but likewise, never knew you had a channel! Will throw you a sub! 😀
