The m16 is hands down way better than the x16 especially at the given price point. The x16 is literally scamming you charging over $4,375 for a laptop whereas the m16 got a sweet price tag of $2,685 and packs way more power than a x16. Even if the price of the x16 is $3,375 I’ll still stick to buying m16 over a x16. It’s just a no-brainer question tbh.
The x16 has come down in price now equal or less to the m16. I'm taking the x16. Better build quality and much slimmer design. $3000 out the door for everything maxed (RTX4090) aside from a 1TB SSD.
They have given the x16 quite a few options since it was first released. I just ordered one with an I7 13th gen and a 4060 for 1899. Dell is currently running a sale on this specific configuration though
Im glad you point out the flaws with Alienware. With their higher price points, what might be looked at as non-issues in a Legion suddenly become a big factor in whether it’s worth getting. With that said, I feel like Alienware would be alot more people’s favorite or second favorite laptop brand if their laptops were about 15-20% cheaper. I ended up getting an x16 with a 4080 and 2 year premium warranty with accident protection for about 25% off- I would never have even considered it pre-discount.
this is exactly the biggest point! alienware at retail is a hard pill to swallow, but they always have sales or coupons and when that happens they can be hard to beat! Hope you are enjoying yours :)
Thank you for clarifying that full disassembly is needed even for fan cleaning! This kills the m18 for me but prevents my wrong purchase of a Dell this time. Manufacturers really need to learn that one must be able to maintain one's computers! They are not throw-away articles. --robert jasiek
m16 hits hard. loving it. if i want total annihilation graphics and processor i typically go MSI but my M16 came with the i7 13700 HX and 32gb DDR5 and RTX 4070 which is more than enough at the price point i got it. dont regret the decision at all.
After deciding between Alienware, Asus, and Lenovo, I settled on the Alienware M16 - Dell is having a nice sale on the i9-13900HX, RTX4080, 240HZ display, and individual key backlit keyboard (and I could have it shipped next day). Right now Best Buy has the Asus Strix 18 for slightly cheaper (but Alienware seems better about looks, durability, and upgradability). I also took advantage of Amazon Prime days to buy 32GB DDR 56000 RAM, a 4 TB Gen 4 SSD for the second full slot, and the 1 TB for half slot (the Sabrent link you have in your upgrade video). The upgrades have different ship dates. The laptop is supposed to arrive on Tuesday, and then the 1TB is coming on Thursday. I really like its upgradability....and reviews seem to really like its keyboard. I'm thinking I'm going to try it for development work (and will have a Linux boot on the 1TB). I've seen a video on how well the M16 is at cooling if you were trying to keep its wattage up. I'm less interested in its portability as I have a slim MacBook for that (or a Dell XPS that has a really nice Dolby Vision 4K display for video watching). I'm planning on installing games on the 4TB drive, and at first will be trying different Linux distros on the 1TB. My current distro on my Dell XPS has always had issues with audio drivers (I have to disable speakers, and they can first have some static in Windows until I re-initialize). Will be interested if Linux behaves better, and if the keyboard is also better for development. It's also nice that the HDMI port is 2.1, so I'll have no issues running it to my home entertainment setup (where I also have a Microsoft Elite 2 controller). I'm in the US, so I know I'll be getting that familiar big brick (I actually have another one from an older Dell Precision that I used for 3D animation). At least it seems the slim 330 watt ones are easily available on E-bay.
It’s a shame that they didn’t offer the larger form factor with all the bells and whistles. Only compromise would be that its slightly thicker, and I feel that most people would prefer that.
I ordered the X16 with an 13th gen i7, 4070, 16 gb of ddr 5 6000 ram and 1tb ssd for $1,600 normally $2,400 on dell. A similarly modeled m16 would be $1,900. But for the Black Friday deal, if I’m getting an x16 with those specs for that price, I had to do it.
One of the biggest annoyances that doesnt get talked about is that there is so much venting on the right side of the machine that blows hot air onto your hand and mouse the entire time you play the game. Can't stand it.
That is true there is plenty of venting on both sides but I am not sure if I am lucky but it didn’t get that hot for me! I had a thinkpad t490 a while ago that only vented out the right side and that was a horrible experience
Thanks for vid, nice comparison, both m and x series build quality seems to be converging!...is the newer Alienware command centre 6.0 available in both...my x17 r2 hasnt arrived yet, (sending back the Ryzen AMD m17 r5 despite £600 discount and opting for a higher spec x17 r2 instead!), I'm wondering if AWcc 6.0 will roll out to all alienware laptops or is it restricted to this generation only? Cheers! 👍
@@MashITTech I saw it somewhere at some point, don't remember if not on the German website (Dell), one of the leading Polish dealers still has the 3060 option.. if I needed a laptop just now (got a Surface Pro 8 for mobile crap ; ), I'd probably go for it...
did you get the x16 r1 or r2? I have the new r2 on order for review. The x16 is a great machine and I am sure you will be happy with it. I would always take the x16 over m16 personally
@@MashITTech thanks! I went with the r1 I believe? It's the one with the 13900 and the 4080. I didn't mind going with an older one because the CPU and the GPU are both more than adequate for me, plus this particular one was like 800 dollars off so I felt like it was a good deal in comparison to the latest model. Again I appreciate your thorough review! Helped me make a decision I feel satisfied with.
@@MashITTech I do have to say though, I don't like that I'm going from an XPS with a 500nit display to a more premium machine with a screen at 300. Not sure what the hell Dell was thinking but I think I can live with it since I use mine mostly indoors. But I hope they make some changes going forward.
@@azzyofficial11 I've had mine for a few weeks now and I absolutely love it. As I said in a previous comment, the only negative I really have is that the screen is only 325 nits, which is pretty unacceptable at this price point. I can deal with it though, but it might be a deal breaker for other people. Everything else is great though. It performs really well with games and the temps stay reasonable, the laptop itself is pretty thin, the speakers are fantastic, and the 240hz 1440p display is great. I also love the rgb, specifically the track pad.
I would like some perspective over the amd option for the processor. Right now the top AMD option comes with a higher price tag than intel´s counterpart. Which one is better?
Your videos have been absolutely excellent. Thank you for all the effort. I was stuck between the m16 and x16. Clearly, the cpu is superior in the m series. I wont be using as a gaming laptop, but its nice to have the option there. So knowing the power of the hx chips. Its a shame they didnt implement into the x series. Saying that. Being so thin. Dell must have had their logic behind it. Anyway. In the end. I was extremely lucky to pick up the x16 with the i9, 4080, 32mb and 2tb for £2100. Don't ask me how. But this was direct from Dell without a discount or promotion. I hit the add to basket immediately, as the same spec was hitting closer to the £3500 the previous times I had a gander. My question to you is this. At the price I paid. Would you say the x16 is better value for money ? I believe so. But only for the price of £2100. I love the speakers and the build quality of the x series. I would prefer the hx chip and upgradable ram. Yet for the same spec roughly with the m series. Thats over three grand of cost. I think I managed a lucky dip, or a golden ticket, at the price I paid.
That was clearly a pricing error, I noticed it at the weekend but unfortunately they sold out before I could snatch one at that price 🤣 At that price you clearly won the lottery and price to performance ratio destroys the m16, well dome mate
Wow, such luck! I have watched electronics prices for 2.5 years but never witnessed any pricing error, although some retailers change prices several times per day. Must be our German mentality:)
@@MashITTech I didn't want to spend that much. I was looking at refurbished laptops at the dell outlet. But for that moment, I was very lucky. Guess the Alien gods wanted me to have one 🙏🏻😁
@@NoName-zf6nr it was pure luck and consistent price checking. You could say an obsession between TH-cam reviews. Particularly Mash IT (so well done for having such a outstanding channel) and window shopping. Maybe manifestation too 🙂
great revieuw as always. Ther m16 is clearly the beter machine with the best screen options.. Waiting to see an x18 with a beter screen with at least 500 nits.. Maybe even with 4 k screen
I always said the X16 looks like those vehicles with mismatched doors and hoods from the junkyard. How hard could it have been to make the tron ring chassis aluminum as well?
Great video. I’m really into the 100w charge for X16, for the portability. Still I wonder how many year I can keep using X16 since the Ram is sintered on the board.
Hello mash it tysm for the vid but what do the cores do i am looking for a laptop that will help me render big projects should i consider the m16 over x16?
Yes, but it depends on your software, these days software often offloads the render work to the GPU. But if your render is still GPU based having a CPU with more cores allows it to finish the render much quicker
Hello, I would like to ask for your opinion. I purchased an m18 with 13900hx and 4090 last month, and now a new version with 13980 is released at the same price! I am expecting to receive the laptop in a few days. Do you think I should return it and purchase the 13980 version, or do you think the two are similar enough and it's not worth the hassle of returning it?
No, it’s not worth the hassle. There is going to be very little difference between them. I would choose it if buying new but not bother returning to get it
I got the 480 hz screen on the x16 , I normally run low settings as I’m a competitive gamer. I’ve had the x17 with the 3070 so my new one is an upgrade
Just snagged the 4080 equipped X16 for around 2900 on a sale. It may not be nearly as powerful but I hope I'll be happy with it. I need it for gaming and travel so the thinner and lighter version I felt made more sense. It's a bit over one pound in weight difference, something not mentioned here from what I've seen online
Same! I kind a confused actually with alienware clasification lol...somehow thiner are equal to premium and better to them 😅...it just a shame that m16 didn't have same premium level with x16, i mean the speakers etc
Honestly being a gamer or artist we don't use bloody touchpads when you can attach external USB mouse and keyboard. And the RGB keyboard is Emit and gives an ambient feel.
Great comparison! Thanks for another Alienware video! Do you believe that the M16 would run cooler than the X16 if built equally? Or would the thermals be similar enough that it’s not a huge factor?
Good video, I love the design of the Alienware I am a fan, now I could see that with one hand you can open the laptop, it is frustrating since you are paying for a premium laptop also the temperatures are quite high if you are paying for a cooling system and it does not fulfill the commitment because the high price
You can change the throttle point so it runs cooler but Dell just lets it run flat out until it hits 100c before it starts throttling back the turbo boost.
@@MashITTech I would like the M16 but amd cpu, the new HP OMEN 16 transcend also came out, I also don't know if they improved the quality of the screen
I’ve been meaning to ask can the M16/M18 be used with the Razer chroma stand you have and do you know if the version of it without LEDs would work? I know it’s probably a stupid question for the M18 given the size but I thought I’d ask as I’ve been having trouble finding a stand for the M18
the basic is 3 zone backlit, the per key RGB and cherry are the best options. Both fantastic keyboards and the cherry feels and sounds like a cherry mx blue where as the RGB has a soft but great feel
Good deals on dell website right now for a M16 r1. My question is for the same price I can get a refurbished x16 with 32gb mem, i9. 2nd question is if I go M16 with r9 ryzen, can I match it with Nvidia gpu as the amd radeon is out of stock with Dell.
Great video, but a comment about the Ethernet port, I have worked in IT and now automation and a lot of Programmers will go either way dell or Alienware and they use the crap out of the Ethernet port. I think Dell sells way more midgrade gaming laptops to businesses and people for work laptops than for home use. I personally have two for work/ on the road for work.
totally agree with you, I still use ethernet a ton and always try to buy a laptop with one (if not I can get buy with a USBC to RJ45) I just hated the placement on the m16, they should swapped the rj45 port location on the side with the memory card reader on the back
Hi Mash It, what you choose: Alienware m16 rtx4080 or Lenvo Legion Pro i7 Rtx 4080? In two days I need to buy one and I would appreciate your opinion 😃
Both solid machines, m16 is slightly better built and legion has a brighter screen and better thermals. In the U.K. the legion is much much cheaper so I would choose that but I don’t know where you are located
@@MashITTech Thanks for your answer, I think I'll opt for the Lenovo, but I'm sure that in less than a year they will release the same model but with a mini led screen and I'll be frustrated 😅
As always good job sir. Sir these laptops have battery boost in geforce experience or not? I think geekbench compute gpu scores are coming great on battery. I like x16😅 because it has faster ram, better battery.

How do you find the average gpu t junction memory temps in the Alienwares ? Seems to run hot on these rtx4000 cards 102 for me. Agree about Alienware power button !
sorry saw your thread on extra but I have been flat out trying to get this video finished! I haven't noticed the t junction as I don't think it shows in afterburner, I will check HWInfo
I'm having a hard time picking between the xps 17 & x16. Leaning towards x16 for the performance, but worry about portability. Any advice? My use case is as a work laptop + 4k video editing
portability of the x16 won't be much worse than xps17 yet you get amazing performance on x16 and ups17 is average at best. You also get much better port selection, a better keyboard and a high refresh matt screen that is much smoother. The XPS17 gets a higher resolution screen that is brighter which could be useful.
quick question... does the X16's Small GAN Charger 330w also work on the M16 and M18 perfectly? I'm planning to buy the smaller charger for my M18 when it becomes available 😅 I don't want to move around with a brick in the bag!
Hello.. can someone clarify a doubt for me? I'm from Brazil and will be in Seattle for a few days next month. Would I be able to acquire an Alienware model in physical stores (like Best Buy) or just on the Dell website?
Very, very good comparison!!! I would like your opinion, please... I am cannot decide between the m16 and x16. Most of the differences don't matter to me (RGB, Eth port, port locations, case color, etc.). So, considering only RAM speed vs CPU speed. The m16 has faster CPU and x16 has faster RAM. Which is more important? Or does it not matter? I mostly play games - no video editing or VMs. if I buy the m16, and replace the memory with 32Gb of Fury memory as you described in "Alienware M18 & M16 - 10TB of SSDs and 64GB RAM Upgrade" video, does the speed advantage of the x16 shrink to "not important"? Also, upgrading from 4080 to 4090 on the m16 is $500 (which seems a bit costly), while on x16 is only $350. I game at 3440x1440 on external monitor. Is the 4090 worth the extra cost on either system? Thanks in advance!
CPU speed and cores is much much more important than ram speed so I would pick the m16 and upgrade the ram yourself to the faster ram kits. I personally don't think the 4090 is worth it over the 4080 for most people. The 4080 is an amazing card and will power through your 1440p ultra wide. The 4090 is probably 10% better for $500! not worth it for me
i have a strong feeling that the ports' locations are positioned in the convenience of perhaps the motherboard layout or manufacturing and Alienware/Dell are just too bloody lazy (or don't give shit) to research/engineer better solutions!
Still waiting on my refund from dell it’ll probably be at the end of the month but thats fine as I’m waiting not only for someone to get an AMD M16/M18 for comparison but also for the AMD M18 to be released in the UK so I can see if the AMD CPU makes any difference it the temps, I’ve only ever had intel CPUs before but I’d be willing to change if the cooling was better, also are there any difference in temps between the i7 and i9?
I couldn't even figure out which one was the better series without ur video. Thanks. I saw a 16gb ddr5 1tbnvme 4050 on a 13th gen series intel for about $2500. That's endgame good for me! Unless, your just paying for slimline versions. I duno. How does he even afford all these he says he buys them. I wonder if he just returns for free after the week. Wonder if dell caught on yet. lol. my only gripe is im oldschool and if i got an m16 it would be for xbox controller gaming through steam. and I dont want any latency. which means it would need a usb 2.0 slot port. I dont even think they make them! hahaha The newest type c controllers are possibly usb 3 but I am assuming they are just usb 2. I know its backwards compatible but I am an oldschool power throttle person and wouldnt want that. and the latency on bluetooth isn't great.
Sir please check that these rtx 40 series laptop has battery boost in nvidia geforce experience app or not? M18 has battery boost or these have or all laptops have?
What's even more odd than Dell putting the rj45 on the side is someone who deliberately configures the m16 with a lower tier GPU to compare to the x16. You can get the 4060 on 14" non-gaming thin and light laptops with full TGP since it's only 100w versus the 175w of the 4080/4090. Really dumb performance and thermal comparison on two machines that are supposed to handle top tier hardware. Dell likely sent out these review units and he is stuck with them, but pretending he configured it himself.
You know it just occurred to me that that nobody has mentioned if the X16 has the same P core overheating issue as M16/18 and after looking around its because nobody but you has bothered to review the damn thing. I actually ended up ordering the M18 after sending my X16 back as I started to regret my decision but I cancelled it because I was still worried about the overheating issue and because I foude the Legion 7i 4090 on deal from Argos for £3000, wish I could say I was happy with it but I've had issues with it and they are dragging there feet on accepting the return, the only good thing I can say about the Legion is that the screen had no backlight bleed and that it caused me to realise I like keyboards without number pads better lol. Probably shouldn't have cancelled but with the issues that others have had and and the £500 discount it was very tempting
I am currently testing the legion 7 for an upcoming review and I agree the screen is good and performance is excellent but the build quality feels pretty cheap, it is more like a legion 5 than legion 7 and loads of nice features are now missing! Strange that nobody else reviewed the x16 yet! one of my cores was a little hotter than the others but nothing too terrible and scores I got were as expected for the amount of cores and wattage it was pulling. I sent my x16 back as I was expecting a Ryzen version to be released but still nothing :(
@@MashITTech it's very strange that only the AMD version of the M16 has been released in the UK and no M18 and I might be wrong but I don't think that there's an AMD X16 released anywhere right now. I doubt that there's going to be much difference in thermal performance between the intel and AMD chips in the Alienware laptops unless I'm missing something and as there's no reviews there's no way to know for sure.
sorry just to clarify, there really is no power delivery on the M16? the tech spec's on my region's (Singapore) website indicate the following: 2 Type-C Port (Thunderbolt™ 4.0, USB 4 Gen 2, DisplayPort 1.4, and 15W Power Delivery (3A/5V) capabilities) 1 USB Type-A 3.2 Gen 1 1 HDMI 2.1 Output port 1 Mini DisplayPort 1.4 1 Power/DC-in port 1 RJ-45 Ethernet Port 1 USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A with PowerShare Port
I am now going to purchase a high-end laptop for one year school program in Italy and I need to do a lot of rendering. I just checked the Alienware website and they have the 13980hk now for the m18 and I am still not yet decided to pick between the M18 and the Razer Blade 18 with 13980hx and 4090. The only thing I dislike about the M18 now is the screen that only has 300nit and 165hz, I wish they can have a better option for upgrading screens , on the another side they have the global accidental care(good to go in China and I can also use it in Italy). Meanwhile the Blade 18 4090 has a way better screen compares to alienware one(but they seems to have trash warranty)... Guys help me out because I really need some advices to decide which one to buy and I am letting a friend of mine to bring it back from the US to China soon before july(its way more cheaper than chinese domestic market idk why they set the price so damn high) so I have to decide soon lolllll.
Of the two I prefer the blade 18 BUT it is massively more expensive and the Dell warranty is 1000x better so I would get the m18 for the sensible option. Plus you get 2 extra 30mm m.2 slots on the m18 over the blade 18
yea I suppose I will take that advice, the alienware for sure have a better warranty that is also available to ask for help abroad. And I think I can probably save the money to get a extra smaller but better portable screen for extra need thou.
Try the mech keyboard if you like cherry blue switches, that keyboard is a joy to type on. I would say even the scissor Alienware keyboard is comparable to the x1 extreme gen 3 onwards as they removed the travel :( did you ever try the x1 extreme gen 1 or 2? That keyboard was SO amazing
No hx processor, no mini led screen, beautiful keyboard though. Why would anyone choose this over the scar? Your paying about the same price when you go to the x16 variant.

Cheers! 👍
What's the big deal with AWCC 6.0?
I see Alienware X14 with 3060 at a high but reasonable price. X14 with 4xxx will be 30% more expensive but not 30% faster!
they still haven't even released the x14 r2 into the uk store! I am never going to review it at this rate
@@MashITTech I saw it somewhere at some point, don't remember if not on the German website (Dell), one of the leading Polish dealers still has the 3060 option.. if I needed a laptop just now (got a Surface Pro 8 for mobile crap ; ), I'd probably go for it...
M16 prioritise performance,
X16 prioritise aesthetics.
X16 is just better
Are you going to review the their newest keyboard anytime soon? The Alienware aw920k.
it just appeared on the UK dell site a couple of days ago so yes I will probably get it soon
Great review. I ended up going with the x16. I hope I made the right choice but it looks really appealing to me.
did you get the x16 r1 or r2?
How is it so far are u happy with ur purchase im gonna order one today
Just got my first amd cpu in a legion pro 5 which I am currently benchmarking. Will be able to answer you very soon
Guess the Alien gods wanted me to have one 🙏🏻😁

great revieuw as always.
I have no idea what the designers were thinking this year!
I agree with you guys, I like the old all white look. But I will say that I am weird and like the look of the x16.
the look has grown on me but I feel it was an odd choice that's for sure
Great video. I’m really into the 100w charge for X16, for the portability. Still I wonder how many year I can keep using X16 since the Ram is sintered on the board.
Yeah the soldered ram is a real shame
Only thing keeping me from buying one of these is the fact that none of them have a mini led panel
It's truly a disappointment
I would choose it if buying new but not bother returning to get it
@@MashITTech Thank you so much
Bro, be the only channel out there and do thermals with a closed lid using an external monitor.
That you can’t open them with one hand triggers me for a laptop it’s a must to don’t like hover if you try to open it with one hand
Did I not compare the weight? Doh, I did mean to. Although the cpu is not quite as powerful it will still perform the same in games
@@MashITTech beautiful, that's all I need. Maybe you did but I don't recall you mentioning weight, just dimensions

The m16 is definitely the better buy imo
From my testing of the m18 with similar specs to the x16, the m16 should run slightly better than the x16 but not by a massive amount
Thanks! You’re the best source of info on these!
Glad to be able to help :)
I wasn’t impressed with the omen for the last couple of years so fingers crossed it’s improved this year

I’ve been meaning to ask can the M16/M18 be used with the Razer chroma stand you have and do you know if the version of it without LEDs would work? I know it’s probably a stupid question for the M18 given the size but I thought I’d ask as I’ve been having trouble finding a stand for the M18

Good deals on dell website right now for a M16 r1. My question is for the same price I can get a refurbished x16 with 32gb mem, i9. 2nd question is if I go M16 with r9 ryzen, can I match it with Nvidia gpu as the amd radeon is out of stock with Dell.
Great video, but a comment about the Ethernet port, I have worked in IT and now automation and a lot of
Programmers will go either way dell or Alienware and they use the crap out of the Ethernet port.

Hi thank you for your help.
I'm thinking of returning my X16 for an M16. It's always getting too hot, and I am beyond annoyed at how few ports it has
for the first time ever I am preferring the M series over the X series. Dell really missed the mark on the x16 IMHO
Machine better for VR DCS?
The 4090 is probably 10% better for $500! not worth it for me
@@MashITTech Thank you for the advice!
i have a strong feeling that the ports' locations are positioned in the convenience of perhaps the motherboard layout or manufacturing and Alienware/Dell are just too bloody lazy (or don't give shit) to research/engineer better solutions!

Whats your advice.. x16 or m16 ?
sorry just to clarify, there really is no power delivery on the M16? the tech spec's on my region's (Singapore) website indicate the following:
2 Type-C Port (Thunderbolt™ 4.0, USB 4 Gen 2, DisplayPort 1.4, and 15W Power Delivery (3A/5V) capabilities)
1 USB Type-A 3.2 Gen 1
1 HDMI 2.1 Output port
1 Mini DisplayPort 1.4
1 Power/DC-in port
1 RJ-45 Ethernet Port
1 USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A with PowerShare Port
