- let's get biblical in here; the four horsemen of the apocalypse are super interesting figures and have been re-interpreted in pop culture over and over, so you know that I had to take a crack at it. it's especially interesting to think that humans have been stressed about sickness, poverty, and war for hundreds of years...solidarity with our pasts I guess?

One thing I noticed with the Red Horsemen was that the little bodies attached to thier chest also remind me of military badges of honor, which I think is a really neat detail.
Imagine if there were badges mixed into the lot with the people.

@@8unnylover Often times in war, it is seen as honorable to die for your country. That would make the connection between death and honor even stronger.
I think that the badges ARE people because once you have died in a war, you are forever attached to it. All you will be is another name on a memorial, and no matter what good things you have done, serving in the war will hide it. Even if you survive, the trauma will stay with you, meaning the war owns you too.
Literally my first thought, my interpretation of it is that in some cases when people enter a military or army they kinda never really can shake off the trauma or guilt they have and they carry it to their graves, like how the effects of war can last for many decades after it ends
I got to admit, Pestilence is my fav design, she looks so innocent if she had a resting face and didn't have the gas mask, so if they were like REAL people sort of people might let their guard down and approach her which would get them sick. It shows that when you're sick and it isn't like the black plague or it shows any outward appearance you look fine even though you're health is crumbling, and let's admit, if you were sick and coughing a lot or throwing up you wouldn't want anybody to see that, when you're sick you're in a vulnerable state. So when you're sick you may look fine but you're not. And that's why I like Pestilence's design.

When you say you’re fine, but you’re not really fine-
I like how pestilence almost seems like she would reach out a grab you. With famine, something is being withheld, with war there is a sort of choice in the matter, but with pestilence it seems like she is actively hunting you to infect you. I could see her flying around very quickly, like a mischievous fairy and just infecting millions in her wake.
OKAY BUT a “sickness fairy” would be an interesting concept!
@Tired and anxious Fairies were originally evil creatures who stole children and changed form so I'm sure there must be a sickness fairy somewhere in folklore.

With war i think it shows you the victims of it. Line everybody becomes only some pretty display that it colects. Each and every suffeing soul. All of them tied in a horrorfying decoration. As the character watches you from affar and looks though you like a disposable pawn. Nothing else. That's my interpretation. But the rest are also equaly bad. More or less death, because is inevitable. The caracter looks the most inviting, you can't see a malicious intent, she is simply there to guide you through that ethernal dream.
My personal favorite interpretation of the white horseman is from Good Omens! Pollution is the white horseman, and in both the book and show it’s stated that “pollution took over when pestilence retired”

And it made sense for pestilence to retire. Today we have vaccines and medicine to help us fight off disease, but we are the ones causing and worsening pollution.

The horsemen are one of my minor obsessions, so here's what I've gathered from researching them.
(This is from the book of Revelation as it's quoted the most from what I've seen regarding the horsemen.)
First off, my understanding of the confusion with the white horse is that Conquest and War were too similar, so for modern media interpretations they went with Pestilence. I've also heard that it's because Pestilence (sickness) is the result of Conquest but I think that's unlikely.
The first horse is Conquest: "And I looked, and behold, a white horse! And its rider had a bow, and a crown was given to him, and he came out conquering, and to conquer." The way I take Conquest is to mean "glory" and stealing people's land. Conquering some other group of people. I image he wears a crown because it was kings who made the decision to conquer. (Domination over others, greed, status, glory.)
The second horse is War: "And out came another horse, bright red. Its rider was permitted to take peace from the earth, so that people should slay one another, and he was given a great sword." War is the result of the kings desire for Conquest. It's bloodshed and slaughter. As the quote says, it's a disruptor of peace. (Bloodshed, slaughter, violence, chaos.)
The third horse is Famine: "And I looked, and behold, a black horse! And its rider had a pair of scales in his hand. 6 And I heard what seemed to be a voice in the midst of the four living creatures, saying, “A quart[a] of wheat for a denarius,[b] and three quarts of barley for a denarius, and do not harm the oil and wine!” And she covered in the video, it's not Famine from scarcity or ill crops. It's Famine caused by the greed of kings. And since this comes after War, we can usume it's during war times. Kings would hike up the prices for food so much that the lower class wouldn't be able to afford them and they'd go hungry. Meanwhile, they kept all the wine and such for themselves. (Hunger through exploitation, ruling class greed, cruelty, oppression of the lower class, starvation.)
The fourth horseman is Death: And I looked, and behold, a pale horse! And its rider's name was Death, and Hades followed him. And they were given authority over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword and with famine and with pestilence and by wild beasts of the earth." Self explanatory. (Death.)
The horsemen are said to mark the start of the apocalypse/bring the apocalypse. With that in mind, it implies the world will end when Kings conquer another land, bring bloodshed and slaughter, exploit the poor during war times so their people go hungry and starve while they sit with their luxuries, untouched, and then bring about the resulting death of all the people. Which I think is horribly ironic considering how many capitalists are Christian. (Also considering Jesus said to feed the poor and stone the bankers or whatever.) Seems very anti-greed anti-oppression to me. Seems like nobody got the memo. (This is also why I'm not the biggest fan of modern interpretations of the horsemen because I feel like it loses the main purpose behind their presence in favor of "bad stuff = apocalypse." The apocalypse will be brought about by the greed of man.)

"The Book of Revelations in the New Testament lists the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse as conquest, war, famine and death, while in the Old Testament's Book of Ezekiel they are sword, famine, wild beasts and pestilence or plague."
"Under another interpretation, the first Horseman is called Pestilence and is associated with infectious disease and plague. It appears at least as early as 1906 in the Jewish Encyclopedia. This particular interpretation is common in popular culture references to the Four Horsemen."
Pestilence itself has a conques of sorts
Wherein it infects all living beings
Also now that they have been personified, i feel like there are some relationships between the horsemen
Like the more natural two where Pestilence infecting the living is to later deliver them to Death
And War and Famine working in mutual benifit to win battles for War and devistate the population for Famine, as the more human oriented ones
I always preferred the king - war - famine- death, like what you wrote over pestilence - war - famine - death that is common today.

i like the poses you gave them, i found some meaning in them too. famine has both of his hands full, signifying the greed that leads to man made famine and the lack of a helping hand in times of it, he's turned away from you like his attention is only on himself. war has one hand covering his chest in almost a protective manner while the other is reached out dripping filth, leaning into that aspect of how those who start wars keep themselves safe but enact suffering to everyone else. pestilence is hunched over with her hands free, kind of like she's unpredictable and always ready to pounce and grasp onto anyone she can, which is the nature of sickness. death has a straight posture like she's always looming over you, her docile stance suggests that instead of reaching out to take you, she waits for you like she's the one you go to when you take your last breath from her colleagues.

@cxffee_ don't ask just- trust me- Wait no I can answer this Basically I was making a dead OC and for the rotten skin I had to look up a colour pallet and they're is 5 rotten skin colours a person can turn so think of me as a saint

In some interpretations, the white horse is pristine, while the palid/pale horse is sickly, as in how human skin looks when the person is deathly ill. But these are in descriptions of their horses, and while the horsemen tend to have matching attire, the exception seems to usually be Death, who is more commonly depicted as the Grim Reaper, a faceless figure in tattered black robes.
the four horsemen are such interesting ideas, I'm loving your take on them.
I love how the first three are like scary/malicious entity's and Death, although scary, is kind and/or peaceful showing how after all the hardships the other three brought the final end is in fact someone's final rest
I see them as like a family, death: the mom. War: the dad. Famine: eldest child. Plague: youngest child. Famine would definitely be the older sibling to make fun of the younger and manipulate them into doing his chores
I feel like Plague and death would be the oldest. Since they’ve been around way longer then war and famine. I feel war would honestly be the youngest though
And conquest, the missing first child of the family that nobody is talking about.

I think that the characters you made are perfect and really represents how terrifying and spooky this actually is. The horsemen of death just shows how dreadful the peace of death is. The others are more like the ones that give me like the picture of chaos. Death is probably the one that scares me the most out of all of these.
For deaths center peace of the dress that’s holding it up, it looked like angel wings to me.

I got my copy of Unfamiliar today, I love it so much and can’t wait for more! I loved Alice and Lucy’s part of the story and all the characters as a whole!
I picture Death as a sort of motherly being, like how a mother lays her child to sleep, and Death believes all of humanity to be her children which she lays into a painless sleep. So making Death a girl really fits, to me at least.

I love how you specifically designed the Horseman of War as a general/political figure to symbolize the selfish desires of war rather than a violent brute symbolizing the brutality of it. It’s a very different take from what I’ve seen prior!!! Famine too, being a wealthy elite tipping the scales against the poors is delightful and the design itself is exquisite!!! Plague and Death looking so natural, kind of ethereal, and overall unsettling is also so fitting, as they aren’t entirely human-caused, but are nevertheless devastating and potentially disastrous in their own right.

These "if were cute girls or guys" are so creative, really you always do so well when adapting these characters into humanized drawings in your style.
I’ve only ever known them from the story of babayaga and the beautiful vasalisa (I probably spelt it wrong) and it’s so fascinating to know they’re from more and learn about them

I’ve always liked the concept of the four horsemen of the apocalypse because of how their designs can vary and be interpreted. I actually made some Monster High OCs that were the children of the four horsemen of apocalypse with the oldest of which being one of my oldest mh ocs with a pun name, Dee Zeez (you can probably guess who she’s the daughter of)
The only 4 horseman I’ve seen are in the tv show Good Omens. So it’s interesting to see another interpretation of them :)

The one part holding death’s outfit I feel like could also be like a way of representing that she is the pinnacle of all 4 because it is the one most important part of the outfit so it stays together

All of the characters look amazing honestly. Idk why but from all of them the first one kinda gave me shivers. Something about those little pupets from him, the sacrifices represent the real end of humanity. I mean the others don't show it directly, the people who fall because of them, but with the first one was pretty evident. And kinda makes you more aware of the damage of it.

Its actually very interesting how you made the pale horseman's irises gigantic, because the way doctors test if a patient is in critical condition is to shine a light in their eyes, and if the pupil doesn't contract to block the light out, then it means that they are, ultimately, about to die and needs serious attention.
Her voice is so calming even if she is talking about death.

I love the pale horse man. It shows that death can be unsettling, and scary but also apart of nature and strangely calming to the the mourners knowing that their loved one is at peace. This depiction captures death very well.
I was just about to embark on designing my own interpretation of the 4 horsemen! They turned out super cool (and I am very grateful for the background explanations, it'll be very useful when I do my designs)
Oh my the white and pale horsemen are my favorite. It could be because they’re girls, it could be be because they’re lighter colours. But honestly, I love the insane look of Pestilence and the calm look of Death. Famine and War are also very cool because I adore when characters have the face where you can TELL they look down on others, it makes it so interesting! Overall, bravo on the designs and your take!

I ended up using this idea to create characters for an original series I’ve been working on.
Nemesis (Death) is the only one I’ve given the character to, and she’s not really the same as her “siblings.” She was created to replace the actual Death, and she’s the mockery of an angel.
Her design is more based off of your design for Pestilence, since I liked the white and red color scheme. She also has four wings to mock the angels and Gods of the series.
Ngl, I was kinda hoping you'd combine Pestilence and the other one it's depicted as, Conquest. Basically, it's unknown exactly what that particular horseman is supposed to be, but it's either depicted and stated to be Conquest or Pestilence. I do like Pestilence more but I think the concept of a dual purpose Horseman would be fairly cool
Edit: also, I like where you went with Death. Pale in the case of the Pale Horse of the 4th Horseman isn't meant to be, like, a white type of pale. But instead a very sickly, dead pallor, like that of a corpse that's beginning to rot.

War could've looked really cool, someone you want to be or look at with admiration. Like how war and violence is often glamorised in media, such as action movies or propoganda posters. The most manly macho guy, but also charismatic
