CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Commisar Danilov (Joseph Fiennes) gives Zaitsev (Jude Law) his first chance to take aim at Nazi officers.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
A turning point in 20th century war history is the focus of this fact-based account of the 1942-1943 battle of Stalingrad, in which the Germans were finally defeated by Russian influence -- one of the bloodiest battles in World War II history. The film stars Jude Law as Vassili, a marksman from the Urals who is transported to Stalingrad in 1942, and a master German sniper, Major Koenig (Ed Harris). Koenig, an expert German sniper, is determined to eliminate his formidable opponent by any means necessary; meanwhile, Vassili has joined forces with Danilov (Joseph Fiennes), a young Russian political adversary, who is impressed by Vassili's skills and raises his profile in the Soviet Union. Both Vassili and Danilov become involved with Tanya (Rachel Weisz), whose Jewish parents have been captured by the Germans and have forced her to take up with the men on a sniper expedition. Koenig and Vassili begin to develop traps for each other, until fate inevitably must bring the two sharpshooters together. This large-scale production, financed mostly by Teuton companies, also features Bob Hoskins as Nikita Krushchev and Ron Perlman as an aging Russian sniper.

"Thank you, Comrade Commissar."
Good shot, good manners.
Which is why he was a remarkable soldier in the Second World War :) Vasily was the reason why the Soviets managed to defend Stalingrad and forced the German to surrender, he was literally a morale booster to the Red Army.
@@garyyeo1968 The reasons why the Soviets won at Stalingrad are rather more complex than that (the Germans were stretched out over a broad frontage, assaults from the north prevented them from concentrating the units they *did* have nearby to take the city, the stubborn defence of units like the 13th Guards Rifle Division, General Chuikov's innovative city-fighting tactics, etc etc).
But it's certainly true that Zaitsev's skill and courage was a contributing factor - that there were other contributing factors in no way diminishes his contribution.
There is always time for being polite if the situation calls for it.
Oh, now I will cry: poor unarmed young German boys are being killed by a Russian armed to the teeth.

"Outdated"
It fires great bullet of 7.62x54r when trigger is pulled comrade, is not outdated.
I always remember this scene due to Jude Law's pronunciation of "Comrade Commissar." It's so soothing to the point of it sounding like asmr...
I'm always amazed at how accurately they created the destroyed city of Stalingrad for this movie. Did they use CGI? If it's all real, they certainly used some very extensive sets. There is rubble and ruined buildings are far as the eye can see.
It's Hollywood stages, the place so large they can actually fit buildings in it.
They just filmed in Chicago.
IIRC they recreated parts of the city on full scale sets in Poland or one of the Baltic states.
@@pineyhills9066 I was wondering why I felt like I was at home when watching this movie.

Brilliant. Shooting when those artillery shells hit not attracting attention. Absolutly brilliant.
Ya...except you'd hear the crack of the bullet
If you've ever been shot at...it's unmistakeable... incredibly loud SNAP and is generated by the sonic boom of the bullet not the rifle...so it's imediate and feet away...then of course there is the sound of the bullet strike....also incredibly loud (I'm told)..oh...and lets not forget that pink mist that would drift by...you'd probably notice that...might put your cigarette out
NO ONE ever gets a head shot on a running man
You might hit them in the head...but you weren't aiming at their head

Time to range and check wind....
aim...breath....and release the shot
And they know you won't move till your'e....done...literally and figurativly
Stick to video games
@@notlikely4468 Well its a place they assaulted not that much ago, most probably gunfights were happening for hours here and there, and also what and were do the artillery explode may make a huge difference*, also prolonged exposure to loud noises may make harder to perceive lower ones... Also there is a psicological factor behind that may help with that... There is proof on how many soldiers suffered some kind of reminiscences of PTSD by being on the frontline, that while manageable affected the visual and audible perception, like soldiers having problems to actually process orders, recognize enemies and allies, or even perform like "brainless zombies", most probably consciousness trying to escape from the reality of the conflict to give time to the mind to sane, or at least self-preserve some sanity.
If anything the most "annoying" thing is to see oficers taking a bath so close to the frontline... and being guarded by such incompetents...
*Enough explosions may change how the air moves creating flows and "gaps" with lesser air where the sound simply couldnt travel that easily and even it being heard, hardly be able to figure from which direction... like imagine a situation X-----> O ------> V (X origin of artillery sound, O - officers and V Vasili, the explosion sound would move the air towards vasili's shot making it way harder to get noticed from the officers point of view, its not that different to a prey avoiding predators by facing the right airflow vector)
Dudes just decide to hang out, have a smoke and shower on the front line that was just assaulted an hour ago.
underrated observation
At this point in the war, the German army was so sure of its superiority that they felt they could relax like this. As far as they were concerned, being in that part of the city for a Russian was tantamount to a death sentence, so they believed they’d be no Russian’s there, at least, no living ones....
Oh how wrong they were 😏
@@commandercritic9036 uh. No. Maybe in 1940 post France invasion but even in the first hours of operation Barbarossa the whermacht took note that their enemy "was fighting with a ferocity that no other nationstate had displayed up to that point and they had conquered something like 9 nations at that point.
So no, the Russian front marked an end of the "we can do anything" attitude of the german forces; *especially in the sniper hell hole that was stalingrad.
Nice try but I live and breathe ww2.
Bestselling author Nicholas Irving, a sniper known as "The Reaper" who has 47 kills or something from the Middle East, reviewed 11 sniper scenes from movies and gave only this scene a 10/10 for accuracy. He said it is totally doable and he likes thinking about how he would do it. He says even the detail where Vasili stands up and slings the strap over his arm to steady the rifle is correct.
If he gives this scene a 10, I don't even want to know how bad the other scenes were.
This is laughable and ridiculous…
Nicholas Irving only ever shot goat herders, Iraqi taxi drivers and the occasional Lebanese market trader. His 'sniping' doesn't count because he never fought where he was seconds away from dying.
