  • Getting up from the floor can be tough for some people, especially as you get older or if you have weak or injured knees. Here are a couple of techniques that may help. See Dr. Jo's other ways to get up off the floor: • Getting Up Off the Flo...
Find out how to get on my Wall of Thanks: www.askdoctorj...
If you are practicing these techniques for getting up off the floor, make sure to have someone close by to help if you need it & make sure you have a chair, table, or couch near by to help pull or push yourself up as well.
The best way to get up off the floor is by getting yourself into a lunge position with your stronger leg out in front and push up at your knees to stand.
If your knees are too painful to put on the floor, you can use the downward dog or inch worm movement to “walk” your way up from the floor, but you need to be pretty flexible to do it this way.

That's truly amazing Doctor. Love ❤ you from the bottom of my heart. I have been struggling to get from the floor. It has been so bad...that I had stopped sitting down totally. Thanks to the exercise...I managed getting up from the floor without anyone else's help. Moreover...I did not experience any pain or discomfort. You are a blessing 🙌. God bless you and your family 👪

Thank you for this video. I am a 72 year old woman who fell while home alone last month. It was terrifying. I tripped over some plastic wrapping on the floor and landed on my knees and palms of my hands. I couldnt get up but thought to crawl down the hall to my bed where I have Pet Stairs for my elderly cats to join me in bed. Thank God for those little stairs. I was able to scoot up the steps onto the bed where my phone was. Thank God for watching over me.

Thank you so much Dr. Jo for this helpful video. My 90 year old mother fell the other day and fortunately I was there. But I had the hardest time because as much as my mother tried to get up, it was very difficult. Finally, I had to call Fire Rescue. Thankfully, she was not injured. Again, thank you for this helpful video about something that many of us take for granted. I'm going to watch your video on Plantar Fasciitis of which I was recently a "victim". I did take a few weeks for it to finally go away.

Lol, one of my favorite topics. You are tall and slender, watching you makes the moves very clear. For those of us who are vertically impaired and more rounded than willowy it's just going to take a lot of practice. Even with practice, the reality is, if you have ankle, knee, hip, or wrist problems, it will be a mite painful. The techniques are good, practice helps, but, isn't always fun.

    • @AskDoctorJo
      @AskDoctorJo  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Definitely. It's not as easy as it looks, but it's definitely doable for most people with some practice.

Most people above 60 have some potbelly and it is hard for them to practice this .
I fell down on walkway in California and I was not able to get up easily as my knee was also hurt. A young lady saw me falling and rushed to me , gave her hand to get up from floor! It was on my birthday - 79.

Doctor Jo & Lion for this video. I had reconstructive foot surgery in my left foot in 2019. I have been doing standing exercises but recently bought a yoga mat. To my surprise getting up from the floor was something I can’t do. I am still very protective of my surgery foot so I think that is part of the issue but your video helped. I use the couch but for some reason I turn and use my back arms to push myself up (like a backwards push up) I am going to keep practicing and try to stand from downward dog as you demonstrated. Thank you again!

In the 3 years since my comment, my father has passed away, and mother has become progressively weaker to point where she needs a walker to get around. She has also fallen. I doubt she could do either method to get up. At this point, would it be better for her to be evaluated in person by a Physical Therapist?

Thanks!, thisis grateand explained so thoughtfully,. I learned a lot. Ihave Rheumatoid Arthritis and in bad flare cannot put any pressure at all on my wrists or hands, so to get up from my yoga mat when my swiss ball or chair are too far away to use my elbows on to press up, i have had to (after a moment of panic), use this method: roll to side and prop up on elbow like fora side plank, bring my top leg's foot up to my waist like for a knee to elbow motion, place that foot on the floor firmly, shift and roll my hips over onto the bent leg, adjusting as needed to get the knee in a 90ish degree angle while simultaneously pressing into the floor withthe elbow that i am propped up on..then i am in a low runner's lunge.... and use the other leg knee bent to inch it up until both feet are close enough to shift weight onto both feet... yeah thatwas a convukuted way to do it.
`ow, thanksto Dr. Jo, I will start prone and justdo a Dolphin pose (down dog on elbows) and use the inchworm with really bent knees.
Thinkingthis through really helped me see how crucial doing hamstring stretches, ankle mobility and keeping my upper body strength and stable rib alignment is for just basic safety.

Erm… It’s a silly story, but I’m just a very thin, weak and lazy person in 20s who likes to lie down to floor all day. My sister said I should get out of her room and me being super lazy, searched if there’s a method to get up easily, and found your video. I didn’t expected much about the simplest thing as wake up, but your video actually helped me a lot!
Personally the most bothersome part of waking up is always that I should give a core muscle full force to take my own body weight at some point, which leads to promised low blood pressure dizziness, but start from light rolling, change posture to lunge and grab something to distribute force to several other muscle and finally waking up!
This gradual step was what I was just looking for, thanks for making me easier to wake up, aaand, I guess I really should start exercise or somethin’ I guess.

These are wonderful & I'm going to practice with my granddaughter. I fell about 8 weeks ago & broke my right wrist, so was in a LOT of pain. Very scary to be on the floor, knowing you just broke something!. Anyway, did manage to get up, but had to push on my fractured wrist (ouch!) doing so. Thank you so much! I had both my knees totally replaced (at the same one in one surgery - not recommended by me anymore!!!). It’s been 5 years. I had a great surgeon and I have around 125 degrees rotation in both knees. I have had it up to 130 when doing physio consistently. I experience anxiety about kneeling. I can’t seem to get an answer as to whether I should kneel? Any thoughts. I have fallen. And getting up was almost impossible. It took everything I had in me to get up. One more second of energy and it was over. Cell phone emergency help. Txs for your channel and help.

You're welcome! Unless your doctor has instructed you not to kneel on your knees, it should be okay to do so, but it's the same with any therapy where you will probably have to build up to it. If it's too painful to kneel on your knees, the second one might be worth trying.

I have been sporting the downward dog option since I had both my knees totally replaced in 2017. Guess I make the cut for being flexible, yea me!
I actually fell at work last week and landed on both my knees. Worse thing that could happen to me.... happened..... I am left bruised and swollen. Yes, I know I’m young for all this and yet it’s happened. Had to get my hardware checked and xrayed.
After my fall I didn’t want to do my downward dog at work (I work in a doctors office and bleh floors in medical anything are nasty) I opted for a chair to kinda of slither up with my arms, no knees being used. Was hoping to see something similar to that with your chair. 😭

Glad you found something that worked after the fall. Maybe I will make a slithering one next time :-)

I was watching carefully on how u actually got down on the floor - thats my problem. My knees are good pushing up, it's bending them to a squating postion... at 200lbs I make a loud landing to the ground... it not cute. HELP! My grandbaby always wants me on the ground to play.

Thank you for this, i'm a teenager with a newly diagnosed chronic disability and sometimes it causes paralysis so i fall alot
I can do the first one when i'm paralyzed, i just need to manually move my legs with my hands

I don't think I could do that since I'd be right on my kneecap. That's a no no after TKR since the patella could crack. But some possibilities at 5:53. I might try that.

Im screwed, Im recovering from a ankle injury currently doing physiotherapy. My ankle is not flexible yet and also have bad knees 🥴 so kneeling on my knees is very painful. Because of this i often dont get down on the floor. The only way i can get up is i prop my back next to a couch or seat and use my arms to push up and my legs do at the same time. Is there any other tips you may have.

How do I get up from the floor safely with a prosthetic hip? Getting the legs underneath me is not an option due to the anterior approach and higher risk of dislocation.

That's not a diagnosis, like why are they weak? I have many videos to strengthen the hips, but it depends on why it's happening. Have you been to your doctor yet?
