      I used my foam roller or my stick to get up from the floor doing the exercises or stretches from FAI fix

      Squats. Definitely important to continue doing squats/Asian squats and getting in and out of them without hands, just with leg and core strength. Getting more challenging with age, but so crucial.

      Was pleased to find this was never something I thought was difficult, although doing it all the ways you do is a little beyond me. In general doing it without putting a knee on the floor is a bit challenging, but I can do it provide I have plenty of room to wobble a bit. I’m 68 and have some back problems, and don’t consider myself that strong, but I am flexible and I think I learned a technique for getting up and down from the floor in a school modern dance class that I have never forgot. It involves reaching behind with a bent knee, placing one lower leg on the floor behind, then going to the sit from there, then bringing the other leg down and around. It can enable one to do a pretend fall as well safely by continuing down instead of bring the leg around. I must video it some time.

      Any advice for someone who cannot bend toes or wrists? Both my big toe MTPs are fused and my hands cannot bend back at the wrists. I can put pressure on my elbows and knees. Putting all my weight on the points of my big toes is very painful.

    After I saw 75 year old women sweeping the grass in front of the Taj Mahal in a deep squat, I realised how DISABLED I was due to the western habit of sitting in CHAIRS. I stopped using chairs as much as possible and have regained the strength and flexibility of my body, although it took about 2 years doing it very gradually. Remember that seniors living alone who fall and are unable to get themselves up and off the floor by themselves have no option but to move into a Retirement Residence of some kind, so that someone is available 24/7 to help them get up. What motivation to get our bodies BACK TO NORMAL, strong and flexible. Thank you for this VERY IMPORTANT and valuable video. Continued success in your work. B-)😃😃

      THANK YOU for sharing this. People REALLY need to keep this perspective. The work you put in NOW means your life improves now AND in the future. It's the best, safest, and highest return on investment of time you can possibly make.
      NOT putting in the time now means you end up suffering some dire, disempowering, and highly dissatisfying consequences.

      because my mobility got worse after major surgery i found that sitting on a small 9 inch stool really helped, but the asian squat is really the same....... so thats why this lesson is so useful... ps 70 already.... ha ha

      @@Uprighthealth I think I am pretty healthy for my age of 70 years. I do a lot of walking and running, I just finish a 5K in Feburary of this year. I cannot do the 10K or the 1/2 marathon anymore since I had a bad sciatic nerve pain rare its head up last year in January. I could not walk for almost 7 weeks. I have sciatica in both feet. Now I notice my muscles are breaking down. Can you please tell me of any kinds of vitamins or nutritional foods or powder I can take to help my muscles out. I agree that you have to put in the work now to reap the benefits later on in life. I wish someone told me that in my earlier years. But now I am trying, hope it's not too late Thankyou very much in advance.

    A wise person once told me never to stop sitting on the floor or one day you won't be able to. I am so happy I took her advice because now I can sit on the floor and play with my granddaughter and get up and down no problem.

      Yeah 40 years of sitting on the floor with children (Montessori teacher), all good. 4 years of retirement and I’m crippled with back and knee pain

      You did right ! My 93 year old mother-in-law can still sit comfortably cross-legged on the floor for a long time because she never stopped doing it.

      You do know your son is totally upstaging you throughout this video. That said, 🙏 I watched my parents age prematurely which could have been avoided had they practiced getting up and off the the floor.

    I am absolutely sobbing right now. I haven't been able to get up off the floor without using a chair in years and years but following the technique where i put a leg outside of my hands and got my other leg up under I was able to stand. I used to avoid getting on the floor for fear of being stuck down there but you absolutely gave me so much confidence.

      Congrats! Same! I could NOT get off the floor easily without assistance and it took a while. I wanted to work up to getting off the floor wth assistance, but tried the no hand method using these techniques and was able to do it no problem from the first attempt. Who knew?? I thought I was going to have to give up gardening (among other things). Im in the last few minutes of my 50's, so seriously - anyone can do this.

      I am 78 1/2 . Last week I fell out side. Nothing to help..This I worked out for for myself . There was no help..I am so independent if I could have I would have to fig. It outfit my self. I was proud of myself, I done it. No help from eny one or thing.

      Unfortunately, I have had knee surgery and I have been told I need a second one. The first didn’t work so this is great. I can’t use that one knee but this should help!

    It is sad that some people are critical of people like Matt who go to some effort to bring potential solutions that are not cookie cutter in their approach to life's everyday difficulties.
    I have followed this guy for some years now and have always sensed his approach was genuine and not just self serving.
    I'm 76 years young so always looking for ways to help my day to day activities. I only know of him through his videos. Come on guys recognise the good.

    At 61, I’m missing part of my left foot. I couldn’t even climb out of my bath tub. I have very painful knees, 28 surgeries, autoimmune diseases, fibromyalgia, Costochondritis, POTs, and more. In the past year, I’ve built up enough strength to get up off of the floor, but it takes many movements and hands, and things to grab onto. I’m going to practice your your steps

      My right leg doesn't want to bend at all, so seeing me get up off the floor is quite a sight! But I don't let anyone help me get up. I love Matt's videos and don't like anyone criticizing him!

    I love your approach. You are telling people to take responsibility -not rely on doctors. Muscle loss happens so slowly we don't realize what we've lost. You are showing how to improve without a gym or any big plan - just a few minutes a day. Great stuff!

      @@NansGlobalKitchen, I think you're not getting an answer for several reasons...
      One may be that you are flirting a little closely with the "P" in Matt's *R.I.I.P.S.* acronym. I don't know you, of course, so this is mostly a generic answer. The problem with focusing on other than what he is teaching, is that you won't do what he is teaching. I've taught yoga & meditation to students for 30 years, and there are always those who are (sometimes subconsciously) looking for shortcuts. _(Is there an app that can make me meditate more easily/What food can I eat that will burn off pounds and inches quickly...?)_
      If you want to build muscle, work out your muscles. Explore the exercises. If you eat a healthy diet, your body will recruit what it needs from what you ingest and, voilà! you will build muscle.
      (I'm not saying nutritional supplements are bad. I'm saying that they are meant to be used as *supplements* -- not _substitutes.)_

    After years, YEARS, of not being able to get up from the floor and thus being terrified of falling, your technique has helped me get up from the floor, consistently every time. Thank you so much!!! I tried so many other ways but did not have much success. I use the second technique, where I get on my knees, put one leg in front and 'walk' to the side and put my other leg up. This way, I do not need anything to hold on to, just my own legs. Thank you again, very much.

      This is the method I’ve used for years. I didn’t realize it was a technique. I want to work toward using the first method of just rising up. I remember a time when I did this. I used to be so darn flexible. I could put both feet behind my head - pick myself up using hands and arms and swing there with both feet behind my head. I spent a lot of time in the floor though. I could do a frog stand. But, I could also put my feet on the back of my arms instead of the usual frog stand with knees on the back of my arms. I also frequently stood on one foot with the other foot placed on my inner thigh. I think some of these are yoga poses - but I didn’t know it at the time. 😎
      Older now. Overweight. Arthritis in my knees. I’m still fairly flexible. I’m working on balance. And, getting myself down to the floor and back up to standing in a smoother motion.

    As a group exercise instructor and personal trainer for more than 40 years now, I see this problem in people in their 20s so it’s not necessarily for the elderly. Every few weeks I push my coffee table away from the sofa and spend the weekend sitting on the floor using pillows to pad my boney butt and to force myself to get up and down. I have to say it’s always an eye-opener and a bit of a work out since mostly what I do is sitting in a chair or a car.❤️

    This is so important... escpecially for seniors who live alone and no one there to help them. I practice this regulary and at 73 I have no issues getting up and down. Excellent video!

    I'm 84 with MS and knee problems. Most of the time your techniques work, but sometimes my knees just buckle and are painful. I just can't get up! After panicking, I scooted over to the sofa, backing into it. I raised my arms up onto the cushion, and using my feet and stomach muscles, was able to get up onto the couch. It's good to have a worst case backup plan.

      I’ve never been to a gym. You don’t need a gym nor equipment to exercise. You have walls, chair, mat and body weight to do all exercise

    Last month I fell hard on both my knees on a floor trim. Ouch!!!
    I was alone and in shock. I've fallen before, but this is the first time I've ever been afraid to get up as I truly thought I had broken a knee cap. Wow. I'm 72.
    It took me a full ten minutes to get my sycnchronisity and figure out what to move first
    Amazingly, I didn't break anything, no blood. If it weren't for a thick stick I had left by the door to use as a support,, it would have taken forever to get the strength back and figure it all out.
    I'm putting up my ballet bar again so I can do leg and barre exercise again.
    I never understood as a dancer why it was always so easy for me to get up and move from my hundreds of falls. I had stopped exercise for about two years since I moved and had a concussion.
    Thank you sir for reminding me about my barre exercise bar.

    Thank you again, Matt!! I have learned a lot from you over the years. Not as svelte as you. 74 and stiff but so much better than I would have been. Covid has made a couch potato of me which of course, activates the RA, spinal degeneration, one knee replacement done etc. As OR nurse for 42 yrs, body was abused, carrying heavy instrument trays, moving sleeping bodies, before the patient movers so every bone and muscle kills. I so love watching you, keep up your great passion.

    Been watching your videos non-stop for a few days. Recently found your channel. You are the best physical therapist online. I have watched a few over the past 3 years as I broke my leg 2021. Then earlier this year 2024 had an accident in a hotel room due to a fire alarm going off by someone or faulty one? Tried to get myself ready to leave and twisted my front leg tendon. Could not walk had to go to hospital. Thankfully no broken bones. Fast forward now 2024 walking now much better. Renting in house but driveway with my car is above house and steep so am using your exercises to strengthen. I will have inhome physical therapy soon too. I do not want to risk falling trying to walk up 45 degree paved but uneven driveway. But already for past couple days been watching your videos and practicing your exercises and feel better. Thank you.

    I have been following your videos for a little over a week now and doing what you recommend, let me tell you, I’m a stroke survivor and have been going to physical therapy on and off for almost three years now, but haven’t progressed much, after watching your videos for a week, only a week! I have gained more than the three years of physical therapy, flexibility and strength very fast, what a difference! Thank you for your help.     I'm excited to start doing this ... I'll be 70 this month and ever since covid began and I was forced to stop teaching my fitness classes, I've succumbed to a sedentary lifestyle. What I love about your approach is its immediate practical application... not just crunches and squats for the sake of them.

      Since covid I also got so I couldn’t go to the gym; now back to 3-4 x week & daily walking. I’ve walked for most of my 70plus years; coming from a European family also dogs to walk. So good to keep fit!

    From what I've observed in people around me, RIIPS is a one-way ticket to increasing disability. ATM to prosper, for sure!
    Your story gives me hope that it's not too late at 78, that with patience and persistence I can still achieve a deep squat and full cross-legged seated position that are comfortable enough to spend extended periods of time, as well as to get up without hands. Thank you!

    I could do all the agile getting down on and up from the floor without any help when in my 20's 30's and 40's but as I started being less active in general, I now have a harder time getting up and down from the floor as it's true if a person doesn't use their muscles, they will lose strength in them. Since watching your videos, Mr. Hsu, and it's only been a couple weeks, I can get up and down from the floor smoothly without assistance and am 75.

      I used a computer a lot in my working days. After a while I got a stand-up station and only sat when I was counseling a student. I might do some squats when I was standing at my computer just to get the blood flowing. I rarely used the phone to speak with colleagues. I would just walk to their offices or classrooms. This frequently involved steps. Although I had an office job I got a lot of exercise this way.

    Yes!!! I went from being fairly agile and able to get up,off the floor to being highly embarrassed at how I had to contort myself and ridiculously pull myself up with no leg strength. Now I’m going to practice this and get back to normal. Thank you.

    In 2006 I started having seizures several times in a week. It would take me so long to recover. After a while I noticed I wasn't able to get up and down as easily as befote. These exercises are bringing back muscle memory. Thank you so much. 💓

    Great video! Being 60 and a heart bypass patient , I felt like life was going to crap, but a few months ago I started doing stick exercises, some indian clubs and stretches. Better now , except torn miniscus. Im going to try your exercises here. Right now Im like a crab getting off the floor lol thanks

    I'm 74 and feel encouraged. Although I can get off the floor without a chair, my goal is to get up and down without using my hands. I just started your suggestions, and will keep at it. Every day I'm going to practice getting up and down several times a day. Thank you.

    This is SO important for seniors. I have been trying to teach my father this. He has fallen a couple of times and he can't get up without someone helping him. He sadly remained on the floor for several hours because my mother didn't hear him. He now has a button to call people so this doesn't happen again.

    I used to be able to squat and get on and off the floor. Then my left hip started to collapse. Had to have a hip replacement...didn't want it but it really had to happen. Now I'm recovering and really want to regain this skill. Thanks for these!

    This is just so brilliant. So inspirational.
    I knew I was getting out of shape, was not exercising enough, and yes getting up and down was very difficult. Then four months ago I injured all 10 of my fingers and thumbs and both shoulders, and for 12 weeks I couldn't do anything hardly with my arms and hands. What a humbling experience that was.
    But it taught me a lesson: I need to do what you have done. And I'm going to.
    I'm already getting better. I can now get in and out of chairs and in and out of bed without using my hands, but when I was that far out of shape, I couldn't, and then when I lost the use of my hands and arms, brother it was brutal. So I turned to exercise, and I will never let myself get out of shape ever again.
    So thank you for this. Your videos are going to be instrumental in me reaching this goal. I'm really happy that you are on my side in this.

    Hey Matt, I’m a 38 year old woman who has been suffering from rheumatoid arthritis since I was a toddler. I have noticed that my fingers wrists and upper body in general are in better condition than my hips knees and ankles. I realize that I don’t do deep squats nor do I sit on the floor. In fact I’m kind of scared to get on the ground due to pain struggling to get up. I love how you break down ways to do simple activities like in this video. Starting with the movement you can do and work with that until the next step. I’m going to get working on my lower body using your method, if I can do this with my disability, then anyone can. I’ll do an update in a few weeks.

    I could do all of this until 62 then I injured a knee. I have gone to mush since but do walk 3 km daily. I am determined to learn to do this again. Thanks, great video.

    I want to thank you for showing me how to live with confidence! In just a couple of weeks, training my legs, I am now walking like a young person, going up and down stairs without having to hang onto the stair rails. It's not about aging, it's spending hours at my desk chair, letting my muscles weaken. I am very close to being able to get up from the floor without using my hands. Your presentation about Joint Health is an eye opener. You are So correct about straying away from the Medical people for this.

    I'm a senior and just took a course to help other seniors with balance. I also have a sister who cannot get up if she falls and I worry about her a lot. I had another sister who fell outside her house in freezing temperatures and sat out there for hours until her neighbor came home and helped her up. I was very frightened for her when I found out that happened! I definitely don't want to be like that! Thanks for the wonderful video!

    Just found this video and it’s exactly what I’ve been looking for. My lower body strength is very poor and I couldn’t get up off the floor unless I was able to grab hold of something solid. I’ll turn 70 next month and I could see myself deteriorating bit by bit. I tried out your second movement starting on all fours and bringing my foot forward them twisting around and up. I did it first time. So pleased. Ok, it’s not the most elegant of postures but it’s a start and has encouraged me to keep practicing and trying the lunges too. They may be more difficult as I can’t bend my toes without a degree of pain but I’ll still try. Thank you.

    I love how I am always finding new info on TH-cam. You popped up as recommended and since this skill is one I focus on, I decided to check you out. I saw the challenge to get up with no hands about 10 years ago and thankfully was able to do it after a few awkward attempts. I have always used the cross-legged method of standing up from the floor, although I don't do the extra spin like you do. You have broadened my horizons to consider other ways of getting up from the floor to use other muscles. I see several other videos of yours in the queue that I will have to check out. Thanks.

    That standing up with a spin is something I've been doing since I was a kid. And I kept being able to do it into adulthood, until I gained some extra weight for a few years. I had to lose the weight to get back that ability. But then I had a slight injury to my knee and now I'm rebuilding knee strength.

    I so appreciate all of your videos. The way you approach pain and immobility has brought back hope to me in a place where I felt really overwhelmed and uncertain. I’m always believed that there was way more to it or then what doctors told me. Are used to be a runner and a within a few short years my mobility went down significantly due to some hip pain’s that nobody understood. I wish I would’ve come across your work sooner!     Iam from India. I have a desk job of almost 8 hrs. I have osteoarthritis. Doc has advised me against squatting, sitting cross legged, kneeling, etc. I have also done 14 physio exercises. I have to still build my knee muscles and hence would like to follow your regime. Iam 165cms in height and 70 kgs wt. I would love to be able to sit on the floor (esp. Indian toilet)😊

    Thanks for the tips and the encouragement. As an almost 70-year-old, I can still touch my toes and do a downward-facing dog. So I get on all fours and reverse the sequence. It has yet to fail me, but I do appreciate your more "dignified" options. I like the idea of strengthening other muscles. When I first saw this, I thought it was a quick gimmick, but I see that it is a more comprehensive approach with many benefits. Thanks.

    I love your examples, and they work well for me except where a flexible front toe is required. I think many like me have had foot surgery and can’t flex the front portion of the foot. I bet you would have some great ideas on how to get around this! Thank you

    You make some excellent points at the end of this video. Mindset is everything! Even though we all learned of the engine that could, if you think you can't you won't and if you think you can you will, we need reminders not to become an "I can't" thinker. My problem is I need to become a doer also. Maybe I should think "no coffee until I exercise" until I make it a habit.

    Thank you for giving such great verbal detail and modeling to do this no hands sit to stand muscle training exercise. These movement/exercises get scheduled in to my routine.
    I have pain in my left knee when I do a half kneel and wall squats. Massaging while doing the exercise does help relieve the discomfort. The right knee has no pain but it pops when doing these same positions. I have no back or hip pain, however I will be following the hip exercises because I do think/know those muscles are weak.

    Can’t thank you enough for this helpful video as a 66yr old who has been fairly sedentary due to dealing with LongCovid pain and fatigue for 2 years now and getting up and down from the floor is extremely painful and very difficult so I am just starting to move a bit more each day to regain my muscle strength and will be doing these exercises….you are an angel Thank You! ♥️🧘‍♀️

    i lived my entire life sitting on the floor - being able to kick my height and then - and accident - tore the tendons in my knee . Physio did n't really help , i did things that i knew i could do and i was getting better. but the knee was snapping really loud, (and hurting) then the knee swelled again and it's seems to be going down hill badly for the last half year - - i don't want someone poking holes in my knee but no one is offering examining and advice. I feel more trapped everyday - it's was only wee more than a year i could bike in the snow and dance all night if i wanted - now i can't walk and i'm in pain all the time. Help. i will see if i can manage one of these somehow - as i used to be able to pop up from the floor like you did,. i wish people didn't assume that if you are 60 it is time to fall apart and that's acceptable -it isn't to me.

      Agreed! At any age we should not be told immobility is the new norm! No! Losing one's abilities is scary and depressing to one's outlook! Doctors need to do better...we are living too long to just give up our abilities.

    Thanx, Matt - I was always rather flexible and never obese, but after a foot injury and later a knee injury my running/walking was curtailed for a year or so. Suddenly, I found I could no longer stand from a sitting position now that I'm in my mid-sixties. This video gives me lots of encouragement and options to rebuild strength.

    My hero! ATM became my mantra when I first heard you talk about it. Have progressed from hanging onto chair for dear life to get up, to just using one hand. Lower body slowly getting stronger. Need help with doing the leg pull through, like from a down dog. Suggestions? Thanks Matt for your continued encouragement, keep up the great work!
