- My friend Patty adopted Morgan, a 7 yr old camelot macaw with a foot defect. Her toe had to be amputated since Patty adopted her because of how "jelly" it was - bending this way and that. You can read Morgan's full story here; www.birdtricksstore.com/blogs...
It's functional in helping her climb, she can hold SOME things in it, and she can move the toes.
Morgan has never been trained before so I will sharing my world of training with her. My goal: to free flight train her for outdoors so she can fly with MY Camelot macaws!

Yeah I agree. My bird trooper doesn’t know a lot of tricks except for kisses but we have this strong cosmic bond and we will never be separated. Super understands me with our own language just like she said and trooper understand me like a human and better than a human.ya
When it comes to birds and training birds learn once you bond with them i have a indian ringneck a pair of them they do hang upsided a rope i bought em and they have a bond with me that is perfect and i understand them and they understand me they are the love of my life

EVERY time my cat bites me, it is because I push it too far. Sometimes she likes the rough play though, and cuddles after, but ALL blame is on me, always.
My African Grey would be sitting on my shoulder and then just out of nowhere suddenly attack my earlobe. Puberty is such a tough time with parrots.

I love watching dedicated bird caretakers interact with their birds. Owning a bird is a huge responsibility and commitment. It's why I don't have one, but I admire people who do and really know what they're doing.

I took care of hundreds of macaws, mostly blue and golds and scarlets, along with a number of various parrots in a roadside zoo. These are amazing and intelligent animals, all of whom have distinct personalities. This young lady understands how to bond with the birds and make them happy.

I think Morgan knew she needed extra care because of her foot and that's one of the reasons she was so immediately receptive. Of course, the expertise of the owner was a huge part of it.

As it should be always. Treating any type of animal as human, kids, babies or anything alike is wrong. We should do the effort to understand what's their natural behaviour and instincts and deal with that. Stop dressing animals like dolls.

@Das Bienchen As long as we provide them with their natural needs and requirements that is ok. They should be healthy and happy with us. But should be our company not our entertainement.
These creatures are amazingly intelligent. To many non-bird owners, and even some owners, it's hard to notice 'emotion'. But they have a soul and trust and care and all sorts. They are preciously delicate in many ways and need to be nurtured. They are naturally timid and nervous so to form a bond is especially satisfying. Love to all other bird owners out there.
I'm 66 and have always wanted a Macaw, but I've been traveling most of my adult life and didn't have a "consistent" home until last year. I know they are long-lived so owning one is out of the question. The work you do is fantastic. Thank you for sharing on TH-cam. 🙂

Thank you so much for doing this video! I didn't adopt a macaw, but I just brought home a fairly unhandled cockatiel that was being kept in conditions that weren't ideal. The guy brought her too me in a waffle box with some holes and she was pretty scared and going wild in there, soon as I got her home I wanted to follow what you did with Morgan in some ways, let her come out of the box on her own instead of reaching in and grabbing her. She flew out eventually in a panic again but after she landed on the floor I just sat by her and talked to her for 10-15 minutes and kept putting my hand close to her (but not right by her), she eventually got curious and stepped up onto my hand! I was pretty happy haha. She didn't want to get down though once she was on me, she kept gripping her feet tighter when I'd try to put her near her new cage, so I just sat back down and waited till she felt confident enough to crawl down. It might be awhile before she decides to step back up on my hand, but I appreciate the information I get out of your videos!

When I got my cockatiel home for the first time I put her in the cage and left the door open for her to come out. She took a couple of hours but she eventually came to me on the first day, it was the most special thing I’ve ever felt because she trusted me enough to come to me so soon

I don’t know why these make me emotional 😭🤣 I feel like building confidence, trust, and respect with an animal, or human, over demanding and selfishness is just moving.
When I am training my Quaker or just getting her to do a simple trick, her reward is always me getting exited and saying "Yeah, you did it!" which makes her so happy, when I try to use treats for training she completely ignores the treat and will just step up on my hand if I offer her a treat as a reward, also she will shout "I did it!" back at me in a super happy and exited tone 😂

It's not hard to take care of a bird,but the need attention.if you don't have 3 or 4 hrs a day to play,don't get one.

It depends on the type of bird they getting. you must be responsible of waking up and cleaning your birds Bottom cage (every other day) and changing water and food. I’m getting a cockatiel on Monday. I researched, and I think the idea of waking up earlier then I do to clean out her food and water and get to play with her, is actually kinda nice. Will be heading to be earlier now! X
@@jennifer23426 it took me about 20 mins to clean my hans's(Penelope)cage n get her fed n what not.i think they're much easier than cats or dogs,I'm a bird/reptile fan though.keep up the good work.your birds are beautiful!I hope I can get another one sometime soon.
Also.... Consider how old you are because it'll most likely outlive you, so making sure if someone can look after it in the future if that's the case would also be good :)

Hi! I know this video is kind of old now, but, I wanted to say that when I brought my baby green cheek conure home (after a 2 hour drive) I IMMEDIATELY started interacting with her, I never locked her up in her cage. Despite what I heard, I did what I felt was right. She warmed up to me so fast and she was so comfortable. She was only a few months old, but I didn't want to just "lock her up for a couple of days" like people were suggesting.
She's so pretty!! She's got every color in her feathers!!

I bought a cockatiel that was stuffed in a tiny cage with several other birds before I got him. He had one tail feather left and was in pretty beat up condition, and, I had no idea how old he was. He wanted zero to do with me. Every time I put my hand in his cage he'd run from it and bite me (never hard though).. It was taking forever and I was so ready to give up but I know how long cockatiels can live..I did not want this bird in my house for the next 10+ years, confined to a cage because he hated everyone so I persisted.
It took me over a year to fully gain his trust. I've had him for 11 years now. He's free range in the house (he has 2 small cages that he sits on, and goes in when he feels like it, but the door to them is open 24/7 and he's rarely in either), and he's 100% attached to me..I do a lot of computer work so when my hands are busy typing, he'll tuck himself up under my chin or my nose and bob his head up and down (he's petting himself since i cant take care of it in that moment).
If you're patient (and let's be honest, don't value your 'quiet' time that much) birds make extremely sweet, affectionate pets. (Don't get me wrong..he can cop a major attitude when he wants to)

@@rodneysworld8328 It can take a long time, especially if they dont have their wings clipped (when I got him his wings were clipped already, but I've never had them clipped since), but over time they come around :) My boyfriend of 4 years is absolutely in love with my bird but since he's already picked his person(me), he wants little to do with him, but since he's so persistent (he tries every day to pet/kiss him), my bird has even warmed up to him a little.. he will put his head down when my boyfriend leans in to give him a kiss..then immediately look up and hiss at him..then put his head back down for another kiss

I miss my "Gaia" Greenwing so much, we had 20 years together. Thanks for showing this correct attitude to handling Macaw's, I did similar.

Never had any birds, but my last pet was a fluffy little hamster. They say you should give them LOTS of time and space to adjust, but mine got my scent on the way home, and within three days, was trying to get my attention whenever anything went awry. I still remember the first time I put a finger up to the wall of his bin, and he met it on the other side with his paw. Or when he stood up and literally gave me the biggest *:3* smile.
I can't attest to how well this womans' methods work with birds, but I can tell you this much. Pet animals are generally very good with context clues. You just need to be cognizant- look at them and listen when they try to tell you things. I'd say that leaving a critter in their bin just feels like imprisonment. Like a stint in the holding cell.
I wouldn't recommend that- your pet is an individual, and soon-to-be part of your family. They deserve to get to know you, and you them.
You know when you said you should never be bitten if you are paying attention to their body language. I can't say how much I completely believe this to be true. The first year I had my Umbrella Cockatoo I was bitten several times, not out of anger, but over stimulation, just playing too rough etc. Since I learned how to "listen" to her I haven't been bitten. Not once.

This is also true of almost any animal. Dogs and cats are the most popular pets around the world and people get bitten by them all of the time because they don't pay attention! Most animals will give clear signs that they're uncomfortable with your actions and will most likely bite you if you don't stop what you're doing, but people are stupid and don't bother to read their body language.
Thank you for adopting a bird with semi-functional leg. It's a good thing people still ready to love animals with disabilities.

Is it an issue if she bonds with you during the training, and then has to experience separation and then a new person?

Very impressive! many years ago I took care of 17 Exotic Parrots for 10 years and it was a real joy in my life! Listening to them talk, sing, and just the affection they desired to be petted, scratched, and loved. 43 was from his 1st year from being taken from his original owner. So he may be much older than that. He was a rescue bird and id known him many years before he was given to me. I had wurzel for 24 years. if anyone knew all my secrets it was wurzel. Told him everything. He died in my hands and i took him outside in the open where he loved to be and he took his last breathe. He used to call me wench!! To this day i do not know who taught him that. Too much tv. Lol

So sorry to know, however I was told by a veterinarian that sometimes birds die. No reason. Hope that gives you comfort. I have loved and lost too.
My kids wanted our African Grey parrot to ride on their shoulders but she kept nipping their ears, not hard but hard enough. So I put her on my shoulder and when she nipped, I jerked a bit and hollered "ouch". A couple minutes later, she jerked, hollered "ouch", and nibbled my ear gently.
I worked with baboons once and when you say the word Ouch or jerk away they see you as weak and bite you harder ._.

I loved when Morgan was watching flight and started to flap her wings when ever the other bird flew.
You are marvelous! I love that you encourage flight! The world need a lot more kind souls like you!
I think you need to be cautious about Free Flight. Many a domestic bird in my area have been killed by the Hawks that have populated our area. Clipping the flight feathers is recommended by most of the Bird Breeders in my area because of this danger. I'd rather have a momentary unhappy bird than a dead one.
If the house or area is too small, the bird could get injured while flying around. I would rather clip the wings. Besides, cutting their wings wouldn’t hurt them.
It may not seem like cutting the wings hurts them but it in fact, does... psychologically and physically. A bird's respiratory system doesn't even function at full capacity unless the bird is in flight. When it comes to "fight or flight" and you take away flight, you have a bird who feels like all it can do is fight (bite) to communicate. It's incredibly detrimental and selfish to bring a bird into your home and take away its primary means of transportation and overall what actually makes it a bird in the first place.
Free flight outdoors is about risk management. So knowing your predators as well as you know your prey (the parrots) - we studied under a falconer to learn when to fly, where, and how. I'd rather offer an amazing quality of life for the 80+ years my birds will be alive then to settle on life indoors, in a cage, without ever experiencing what they were meant to do; fly. Maybe your area isn't safe to fly in, that's fine. Ours isn't great either which is why we take trips to do so.

My Scarlet rode on my shoulder during walks in the neighborhood. He became my bird because everyone ignored him. He drank from fountains, orange juice from a glass, climbed trees in our yard, and laughed at me. I miss him.

I love that you immediately interacted with her, I believe in that 100% (unlike other people) me personally would do the same thing, to establish trust right away, some people are like “oh no don’t even look at them for the first week THEY WILL DIE OF FRIGHT” and where yes they will be slightly scared it’s nice to let them know that there’s nothing to be afraid of

This is a long shot, (since this was posted so long ago), but I want your opinion. I'm getting a cockatiel, which tend to be really flighty, would this still be the case? Then I would just have a cockatiel flying all around the room/house instead of bonding with me. That's my only worry. How am I to get them to stay by me instead of flying away.
@@jazzymin145 Let the bird come to you, and give them lots of opportunities and incentive to do so. At the beginning of the video you saw that she left the bird on the counter and let her come out on her own time, but coming back often to talk to her and offer treats. If they really don't want you by the end of the day, coax them onto a perch and put them in their cage for the night to try again the next day. The big this is to not be grabby and chasing them around the house. Let them find their own comfortable routine. (I work at a parrot sanctuary and grew up owning and training them) hope that helps!
The point is to not overwhelm it in the first 24 hours. Should be just for observation.
I don’t want a huge exotic bird like the ones you have but what the heck, if I was getting one, I would totally listen to you! I have no idea what I’m doing here but I’m honestly not disappointed because this was super interesting lol.
Just a beautiful family. I love how we're introduced slowly to all family members, the newcomer first Morgan, then the birds, the little girl child, the hubby. The most beautiful of all is the woman looking after these incredible creatures. I just love Morgan. Macaws are the best. They remind me personality wise, a little of cockatiels. Australian yellow combs.

I don't know a thing about bird care (other than food and water) or behaviour, but you appear to know your stuff and I'm glad you go with it and don't listen to other "experts"
I'm a dog person and with over forty years of experience I don't listen to the "experts". A lot of people say the same with a new dog or puppy, "leave it there to settle in", "leave it alone in the kitchen overnight to settle in" first thing I do is like you, establish that I'm a person to trust, I am a safe place to go to when in fear, pain or in need of attention, I am the the most interesting person in any environment. The result, like you a well balanced loving animal that will happily sample new experiences with you because it trusts your judgement.

exactly! I am a bird and dog person, but when we got a puppy, everyone was like "leave it alone" I didn't listen, I let her come out of the cage, and on the first day she would come when I told her to. We bonded for the first day, and now she is the most loving thing you will ever see.
