How did you expect Morgan to react to seeing me? Tell me in the comments.
I know you guys want a lot of answers, but I don't feel I am the one to give answers that aren't directly about me and my relationship with Morgan. The short of it is I didn't see Morgan for one year after returning her to her owner, Patty, and when we invited Patty on an upcoming Spring freeflight trip with us she couldn't come but asked me if I wanted to see Morgan and see if I could get her ready to go with us in time. It SHOCKED ME, to say the least. And this was my blubbering reaction to it all. Just be glad I cut that intro to what I did because it started as 5 full minutes of 😭😭😭
Why are Morgan's nails long? She is mostly on vet-wrapped perches for her foot so her nails have to be done manually and because her bum foot goes to the side, it can really hurt from that angle!

Why did the owner not keep up with flight training or trimming/filing Morgan's nails?
I know right? Just sounds like the bird has been neglected.. his skittish, scared of things easier, he was even unsure about her hand movements.. sounds like he’s been caged for a while lol

I agree. I don't believe patty was taking adequate care of her and she got the training done because she thought it was going to be a "one and done" situation. There's lots of clues in the original series, like when they made a video together and Patty just kept drawling out millions of excuses.
This new excuse about previous owners trying to steal Morgan are laughable at best and sounds completely insane, and instead of completely putting the bird on lockdown you'd probably get the authorities involved or at least confront those people. This whole thing is insane, I DO NOT get good vibes from Patty and I think the bird just spends all its days locked in the cage with minimal interaction.
Is anyone else kind of dissapointed in the owner for letting her get out of flight-practice and fitness after jamie did so much amazing work? I wouldn't have a bird trained so beautifully and then not stay consistant. Maybe I dont know the whole story, but it's just a bummer.

Don't judge please, there is a lot going on, horrible things with previous owners. They show up at freeflight spots where Morgan could fly and try to kidnap her.
They have to be out of contact and publicity for her savety (yes savety) that gives them both a lot of stress. I know this because Jamie mentioned that in an comment, someone asked about Morgan. Be kind for Morgans owner and their situation.
@@LindaEll89 Thank you, I did not keep up with all the drama- but I am sorry both Morgan and Patsy (sorry if I get the name wrong) being harassed to the point they cannot go safely outside and enjoy being free. (Actually it makes me mad: ex-ex-ex owners back off already, everyone else is doing a far better job together with this bird than you ever did, go away and let them be!)

Jamie really should've opened up with a "here's the story" of why Morgan is there on short notice, what this trip is and why the bird is so out of shape.
OK, free fly spots are problematic because prior owners want to steal her, but her talons not being maintained shows lack of proper care. Which makes the rest of the situation suspect.

Your honesty makes me emotional. I once cried when my bird bit me. Not because of the pain, but because I was so upset.I sometimes struggle with my birds too. I love them to bits, often expect to much and get upset easily. I saw the podcast on how we should not project our emotions on our birds, that really teaches me an important lesson. Thank you guys for making this world a better place for birds and bird owners.

Yeah, same. It's really not the pain of the bite, it's the feeling of rejection. But they're not rejecting us, they just have different communication tools and they're doing the best they can to talk to us in the way they know best. ...I'm going to try to keep this in mind while training new birds next week, heh.

Her crying in the beginning shows that she truly loves the birds. she doesn’t do this for the money, she does it for them.
I say this with all due respect.. and I do hope that I am wrong however, it seems that Morgan lost allot of what she learned with you the first time due to the fact that her owner failed to continue the training you put into Morgan.

Ok, I watched the whole video and will watch again but I missed something. Why do you only have 5 days to train Morgan. What happens in 5 days. I thought Morgans owner is a trainer, why can't she free fly? Dont be so hard on yourself; we women take this do seriously, like it's always our fault. A guy would DEFINITELY think something was wrong the bird. I'm not going to say anything more than that, but I know every woman who reads this comment will know everything i didnt say 🤣
When Morgan first met you, her life, on a scale of 1 to 10, was a 2. After your work with her, it became a 9. Once you were gone, she may have missed you far more than we believe an animal can miss a human. Her reaction to your return could have triggered a feeling of anger toward your leaving. We are not supposed to anthropomorphize animal behavior but I am not convinced that doing that is all that wrong.
Some things are decidedly human. Doing something specifically to make another person mad is decidedly human. Vengeance is human. Regret is human. Could the interaction triggered feelings related to the memory of her leaving the first time? There's no proof that it doesn't. But it starts to hurt our animals when we start to think that, for example, the dog peed on the carpet to get back at us for something. Or that the cat understood that they were making a mess when they got into the trash after you had fried chicken for dinner.
Cairrean Cairrean Vengeance is not entirely only a human emotion. Ravens can definitely carry a grudge. I don’t know if animals feel regret, that’s not really something you can know without asking them. And with intentionally making someone mad? I know that wild galahs and magpie larks will pick on other birds.
Projecting our emotions on out animals is dangerous I agree, since we can’t assume that their motivations are the same as ours. But imo to suggest that animals don’t feel as many emotions as we do seems egotistical, and unfair to them.
Whales are actually emotionally superior to human beings....
I sometimes wonder if domesticated animals have evolved to be more like us. As in, the feelings of revenge and anger are human traits, I have never incounered a wild animal that cares for such things. I don't know, I think the idea of anthropomorphizing animals is not something that should be ignored.
Birds are one of the smartest animals in the world, especially parrots and large macaws in particular. They feel emotions, recognize who’s talking to them, and know if what they’re saying is good and bad. They’re so smart, I’m not surprised they have these reactions.
Working with birds is like being in therapy, it takes so much energy to be constantly self-aware so you can get to the ACTUAL work. Hope you're doing well!
Seems to be similar to being like an actual therapist, too. A good therapist knows not to bring their own "shit" into the session. They either need to know how to snap out of it, or recognize when they can't snap out of it and reschedule.

Why hasn’t her owner kept up with training? Why hasn’t her owner gotten her nails trimmed? Unless this is an agreement that you trim her nails the owner should have a vet or professional do it regularly. It seems like for the short time Morgan is in your care she is a happier and more well behaved bird

*I remember the video of you training Morgan I was amazed how fast she got comfortable with u by just letting her make the decision to interact with you instead of forcing her to interact with u. Ur amazing with these beautiful birds keep up the good work!!*
I love that you show your mistakes. Then explain why they're mistakes. As you said no one gets it right 100% of the time, humans are emotional creatures it's hard to turn them off & not project them. At least you realised what you did & can go into things with a better energy.

I get so emotionally invested in things too. Its great to be passionate about what you are doing but sometimes we have to distance ourselves for our own well being.
Watching you with Morgan just melts my heart. It reminds me so much of my relationship with a senegal parrot I work with. He was a 24 year old rescue who came to us two years ago. He was mostly plucked, and abused by his old owners husband. He and I had a magical instant connection. I became his person (and I still am). I worked with him on his diet, his fear and his plucking (he’s now fully feathered except he still pulls his tail feathers), and now he has enough confidence to do shows (were an animal ed centre and we do lots of school presentations and such) with me. Your videos with Morgan initially actually helped me so much because even though he wasn’t technically disabled, he had the same sort of balance issues and fear of perching due to not having a tail. I know exactly how you feel having such a special relationship with an animal who isn’t and never will be yours. It’s so painful, yet so worth it just to spend even one moment with them. Good luck on your current journey together. I love you guys!

Oh good grief. Wear appropriate attire, including leather gloves. A _bite_ is just testing a branch for stability. If you are going to offer your own skin as a substitute tree - don't blame the critter...move so fast, nor project your issues on the animal, please.

Yep I watched the whole thing. I recommend gloves as wild animals will do their normal behaviors when testing a potential roost.

Parrots are generally terrified of gloves and it does not help to build trust with them. Morgan is far from a wild animal.
You are doing an amazing job working on all the things you are doing, but you are working yourself so hard for other peoples expectations. Its okay to say no, its okay to just take it one step at a time, you're not going to dissapoint your fanbase, your patreons, and who else might have you. some macaw bites can leave really intense bruises without breaking the skin due to the large surface area of the beak. My Catalina Macaw Amelia is a rescue and she has a biting habit. Even though most of the ones on my arm don’t break the skin they still leave dark purple bruises that last for a week.
It was part of her story in my recommendations that introduced me to your channel.
It's funny, I saw that first clip of you working, listened to what you were saying, and I saw that bite coming a milion miles away. Cuz I found myself in that situation so many times, not with birds but with horses. The moment you said "we only have 5 days" I just thought "oho"
We have a saying in the horse world, if you want to do something with your horse and act like you only have 15 minutes to do it, it's gonna take you the whole day, if you come up to him acting like you have the whole day, it's gonna take you 15 minutes.
This is something I keep in mind every single time I work with a horse, and even then just last week I fell into the same trap you did and got kicked nearly out of my horse's stable because I didn't listen to what he was telling me, I just kept thinking "I need to get this done."
It is a hard thing to do to set your expectations aside and look at the animal you're working with and how they're feeling, rather than to cave into pressure, but at the same time it's so rewarding, because the respect and trust you find when you actually listen is just invaluable, and in the long run you get so much more done.
But that said 20 years into horses and I still find myself making the same mistakes, it's really a constant work on yourself, but it also makes you that much more conscious of your state of mind, and when you do get a horse, or a bird, who's responsive, available and ready to work and trust you to have their back, there's just nothing else like it

Morgan is actually what made me start thinking a bit more about the commitment behind having a bird, before the Morgan series I never thought about how hard it would be, and how it was not just a one time thing. Since that series came out I've been doing so much more research on everything about birds, and for awhile i thought I would get a macaw as soon as i could, but now even that has calmed down. I do still want a macaw, so very badly, but also know I need to learn hands on before taking on a bird that could likely take my fingers as their own.
I really just want to say thank you Jamie, you probably did help a bird in the future, because I would have gotten one eventually, regardless of my inexperience and lack of knowledge, and they might have suffered due to my ignorance.
Did you ever get a macaw? I recently adopted a Catalina Macaw and despite having two other parrots the level of care for a macaw is a huge step up. They can be so loud when they want to be, and mine is very hormonal. The vet wants her to have an implant due to how hormonal she is.
@@MrJdubz100 no, sadly I'm still not in the financial or mental place to get a bird of any kind, but its something I still want for myself in the future
Hopefully some day you can find a rescue and provide it with a great home. It sounds like you have done quite a bit if research and know how to provide a good environment. It is sad to see how Morgan went downhill after leaving JamieLeighs care. I hope that she is back up to 100% now.

I adore having Morgan back! Her story is how I found your channel. I know Patty loves her, and we all love Patty, but if I'm being totally honest, I think it would benefit Morgan if she stayed with you, Dave and Capri full time. Either way stoked to see her back and for Morgan's story part 2.
In case you ever wondered how long their memories are, I recently got my 23 year old Yellow Naped Amazon back after 15 years with "grandma." He remembered me within minutes, without a doubt. He was regurgitating for me almost as soon as he heard my voice (not that I'm encouraging that, but it was impressive; his grandma said he never did that for her.) It's amazing what they remember.
I am glad that you made this video. It is a reminder to all of use that we need to continually review our interactions with our birds as we all make mistakes and probably will in the future.

Edit: It’s no longer a tease! Man, the emotion in this video got me in the feels. As corny as it sounds, I want to give you a virtual hug, tell you you’re an amazing person in everything you do. Your parenting absolutely shines in the glimpses we get with your daughter, you are such a compassionate pet owner and the as a trainer, you shoot to the stars! Thank you for showing the successes and the trials.
As a dog trainer this is a million times relatable. It can be so discouraging when your brain is in a million different places and you over book by accident. Add family illness on top of the mix and I just have not had the trainer confidence I usually do so I totally get how hard you took the Morgan interaction. Keep your head up because you're one of the great ones and we all have our bad days. I'm so glad that you and Capri could have a moment that reset everything and made a positive out of a bummer time. You do amazing work and this line of work can at times feel so isolated so it's super important to cling on to the support system that you have.

I was sad to see how Morgan had been progressing so beautifully, and now, this. Patty has a life too, and she did recognize that something had to be done for Morgan. None of us can keep up with our responsibilities all the time.
Yes I am not one to judge about not keeping up with nail trimming because despite the fact that I can do most of my birds nails on my own sometimes I let their nails get pretty sharp. Thank goodness for those pedi perch things, those help quite a bit.
So, I think a lot of people (including myself) were expecting (huh, funny about expectations) to see this like...running/flying across a field to each other slow mo movie style 😂 and while that didn't happen, I think what you showed was even more beautiful because it was REAL. Morgan has been gone for a year and coming back is brand new for both of you - you are not the same person and Morgan is not the same bird. It's a lesson to all of us, as bird owners and as people, to not lean on expectations of others but to enjoy the process, whatever it may be ❤❤

Here was my prediction: _"My guess (from my macaw’s experience) is three stages of reaction: First, confusion ...then total excitement followed by some snips and bites for being away so long."_ *_.........Called that one!_*
*Additional Note:* Parrots bite. Sometimes they just bite for the hell of it. We look at biting in a completely different way than parrots do. I don't think parrots even understand how brutally painful their bites can be. It's the only real manifestation of power that they possess (as a non-proprietorial animal), so they use it whenever they damn well feel like it. It can be heartbreaking based on how we love them ........but nature is often heartbreaking.
Birdman I figure you can answer this for me how is it that the other birds in the flocks of birds known for being biters don’t end up with bites on them? It seems like one bite would cause massive damage. So why haven’t I seen evidence of bite marks among birds? It seems like an owner would point that out to us.
@@Joycemac I have two macaws that got into a fight just this morning (male and female). B&G vs Green wing. The B&G did suffer a facial cut from the green wing's beak before I could break them up ...so it does happen.
I've wondered the same thing, but parrots go at it beak-to-beak. That's mostly keratin-klashing and not like our soft, spongy "exposed flesh" that's easily nabbed from someone who doesn't fight back.
...They're just idiots.
Birdman lol, wonderful answer. After I posted my question I was watching another bird video and I noticed the damaged beak and remembered it happened when the birds first met. The bite the bird received was bad enough that one side of the beak has a massive dent in it. Thanks for the answer and including so much personality. How I wish I owned a bird.
Joyce McClaran I’ll tell you this much, a parrot is like a 2-year-old that can take off you fingers. This “Bird Tricks” couple are the best I’ve seen anywhere for dealing with parrots. They are unprecedented in their knowledge and how to manage their strange behavior.
If you do adopt a bird, watch their videos. They cover just about every issue you’ll encounter (especially with parrots).
As painful as they can be, my parrots are a wonderful experience and have taught me a great deal about patience.

I do appreciate your humility in describing your reaction to Morgan’s bite. My 7 year-old Blue and Gold male has been biting after all this time. I feel like I failed. Not to be rude, but why is that it seems like she’s doing worse than she was when she left you? In regards to flying and stuff, why doesn’t she fly at her home?
I've heard that the original owners that have given her away to patty tried to kidnap her when she was flying.

I've never even met her and I love her so much. She has such a good heart. She's such a kindred spirit to those birds. That whole family is. Lucky bird who's lucky enough to find those people. If you have to be in captivity I can't believe it gets better than that.

I'm sorry you got bit and things didn't go as good as you would have liked but this was good stuff to see;we learened something and it shows that eventhough you are a wonderful bird trainer, it shows you are also human. And it is a perfect example of what you guys were talking about in the last podcast,like you mentioned.

you handled the bite sooo much better than i would have. basically being told f you from an old friend that you spent so much time working with already and then giving him a clean fresh start again the next day was great to see. even if i knew that it's not "personal" and who knows what morgan was thinking in that moment.. i still would be cranky, cautious and more distanced from then on. She can count herself lucky to have such an amazing trainer and i wish both of you the best for training and the upcoming trip
I feel like the pressure is on! Poor Morgan .... You did so much work on her and she was just doing so amazing. My heart hurts for you and her, but I can’t help but think maybe she missed you. So the only way to get you back in her life was to get you back her way ha. You two actually belong together in my honest opinion! ❤️❤️❤️

I don't understand this. Where does Morgan live and why hasn't she seen her one year and do I heard right Morgan is not living with her? Why? Only she is a bird with special needs? She does progress and is happy with her so why doesn't she take her?!

Verena Kelly just guessing, but since she is a bird trainer she possibly takes people’s birds, teaches them whatever people want them to know and then return them, just as a dog trainer would.

I think you hit it right about the energy levels. It's amazing how sensitive you are and Morgan reacts to this because she has also this sensitivity. I think you are a very beautiful person. I have no experience with birds but I see that tuning in and teaching requires a special and unique capacity, birds or humans. Remember to deep breathe.
