  • Having tightness in your hip flexors can be really limiting in all sports, but very noticeable in the golf swing. As Chubbs once said in Happy Gilmore, "It's all in the hips." Needless to say, having a proper hip drive is crucial to a powerful golf swing as well as reducing the risk for low back pain in the swing.
As discussed in the video, there are usually 3 main reasons that lead to tightness or stiffness in the hip flexors.
    1. Hip flexor flexibility limitations: Having actual shortness in the hip flexors can cause decreased force production from your glutes as well as compensation from other regional areas in the body, like your low back.
Performing an Eccentric Hip Flexor Stretch can be an effective way to improve your hip flexor flexibility and is being shown to be more effective than static stretching alone.
    2. Hip flexor strength limitations: Having weakness in the hip flexors can also limit the force production potential in your hips and your body can switch on to a protection mode causing pain or discomfort in your hip flexors.
Performing hip flexor strengthening drills can help reduce pain and improve performance in those with hip flexor weakness.
    3. Hip Flexor Soft Tissue Tightness: Sometimes our tissues get tight from a lack of recovery, repeated performance of the same task (i.e. a golf swing or prolonged sitting) and simply need a little bit of tissue work to help reduce pain. This can be a great drill to do right before you hit the course.
Performing self myofascial release at the Tensor Fascia Lata muscle can help do wonders for improve hip flexor mobility in the short term.
