Adam. That was an excellent demonstration of how the hips swivel and move opposite the arms on the downswing. I have been watching and taking lessons for years and I have never seen it explained and more importantly demonstrated as clearly as this. The segment where you put your hands on the bag and rotate your hips so easily and rapidly was the key for me. This I can not do!!!!!!!!. I'm a 63 year old senior and I don't think I could do that even when I was young. LOL. Thanks for the insight. My back hurt just watching you. I guess I will never be a big hitter. Oh well. I will have to settle for 180 Yds drives on a good day. Take care.
I watched a lot of Golf videos And found your videos. I think they are best videos out there. The great mynute details you give ,, very few instructors do.
Another great video, Adam. You make complex concepts seem so simple; I love the analogies comparing the golf swing to various other athletic movements. Keep up the great content.
Mr. Bazalgette, I admire your videos. This video in particular has helped me to move my body in the proper sequence -- leading with the hips and trunk on both the upswing and the downswing -- and improve the consistency of my iron shots. Thank you for your clear, wonderful instruction.
Finally put myself on slow motion video and get to the top good but coming down near impact my hips are barely open and right arm almost straight at impact so got to figure out how to move the hips better. Thanks Adam! I will try these tips
Amazing simple advice. You're my absolute fav online instructor! Once you get that "feel" for the slot and add your advice about the whip of the club like a towel... your distances sore. I've always been steep, so my irons are long and high. Hit down to hit high can work with irons, but with a driver this is dangerous. My power fade is not bad, but I wanted that upward strike to get more effortless distance with driver and I've found it! Yes you'll duck hook a few times as you adjust, but the effortless power will come with a bit of practice. Thank you for dispelling all the old golf instructor adages and vocab that can be impossible to correlate to feel. I could not have made them "real" without your simplified techniques. I now realize how much swing speed I've negated over the 3 decades I've played and how I've relied on my strength to compensate off the tee with the driver. I look back at friends and competitors that could never hit an iron as far as I could, but would be neck and neck with driver. What?! I hit a 56 wedge 90 yards so effortlessly with your technique in competition...bummer is that the pin was only 70 yards LOL. Joking aside, you have saved my back for more years of play, and increased swing speed. I feel far more relaxed on the course. Thank you!
This video completely helped eliminate hooking the ball! I had no idea how uncoordinated my hips and shoulders were. One thing I did was imagined I was using a tempo trainer and right at the very end of the transition I had a swing thought to “unlock” my hips if that makes sense. I was getting so frustrated so thanks for the great lesson!
Just wanted to tell you, l know this has nothing to do with your hips., but changing my working with my grip that you have taught. Yes I found what works for me. A more neutral grip with the club hip high and level slight turn to the toe to the left. Point being like you said, try things out and see what works for you thank you thank you
This is great, my hips open well and i strike it beautifully when it all works. I still thought maybe they should be open a lot more and I was wrong, but seeing the difference between different pros has put my mind at ease. Thank you very much.
Wow - thanks Adam - first time I have ever seen anybody talk about the separation of hips and shoulders - I have been told I am too handsy and trying to get more hips into it that has caused my shoulders to throw over the top leading to weak slices and other ugliness - my local pro said I should get more like "Shakira" and no I know what he means - thanks Ill try it out on the range this afternoon and report back
Great teaching. Loved how you applied videos of others and how you qualified a personalized approach is important. Not everyone will look the same swinging. but the principal of execution in hitting the ball is about striking the ball . Great visuals to work with
Great vid again. I always struggle with switching on too much power/torque at the top and then it feels like I lose the clubhead behind me. Do you think I should just waiting for gravity to start the downswing then switch the power on? 3hcap but play like a 20 when this happens.
Really, really explains a problem I have been having causing me to snap hook my shots to the left. I can now work on correcting my problem just by watching this video. Understanding what is going on with the hips, I feel confident solving my problem.
Adam thanks for replying, another question? Clearing the hips does the same apply for a closed stance; with right foot dropped back and slightly flair out?
I wrote a comment below, in which I ask Adam to give us a method of playing golf that DOESN'T rely on disassociation. The case I make is that only the most accomplished golfers ever really develop the skill to play golf with the proper sequencing. Further, I proposed that body-type, age (and I didn't mention height) and weight all play a roll in making disassociation difficult. Finally, I point out, that if the average 50 or over golfer goes out and hits a large bucket of balls, and REALLY disassociates, he'll (women not so much) be laid up on the barcalounger watching daytime talk shows for a week, as his back recovers. None of these comments were meant to be disrespectful to Adam, or dispute this video's message. The video is 100% on point in defining the very essence of the golf swing: lower body starting the swing (after a nice hip turn back); left hip sliding and turning out to help move the weight to the left side; and left shoulder rising up and staying online as the hips turn under (disassociation). That's it! Just figure out how to set and release your wrist angles and you're there. The problem? Look at the points listen below. They were taking from a "swing faults study" golf.com posted. The study analysed thousands of golfers through an app called Swing Index App. What it shows, is what anyone who has ever gone to a driving range knows: most golfer's fall back a bit (sway or don't shift their weight at all) as they try and "pick the ball up" (because, how else does it make sense that the ball gets up in the air, they ask). So Adam, since we know it's a lost cause to teach old dogs new tricks (for sure, give young and beginning golfers this video), give us something new for the sake of our backs! That's all I was saying; and it was out of respect for your obvious knowledge of the golf swing. Maybe Tiger is the answer. It's clear that Tiger is trying some sort of anti "reverse C" swing. That new driver finish looks wipe-py, because he's trying to exit before the full force of the swing hits his back ( well, it is a wipe swing; left is his miss). I've been trying a Webb Simpson move ( I'm a 65 year old, blade using, tips playing, recovering reverse C'er with 4.7 index); Webb, at normal speed, looks like a 16 handicapper the way he appears to fire his left shoulder out with his hips ( in slow motion he doesn't but he "pops out" fast). Let's find a way! For the betterment of golf. - Most golfers who struggle to break 100 tend to struggle with their weight shift on the backswing, swaying too far back. -Golfers who shoot around 90 also struggle with their weight shift more than anything else, but in a slightly different way. Rather than swaying too far back, they don’t shift their weight at all. - The best golfers struggle with the most advanced problem: The downswing sequence. Golfers ideally should shift toward the target, then rotate their body, then rise through the ball. Getting that order correct is crucial
Thanks for the follow up, happy to hear your opinions. My personal experience (and I've given tens of thousands of golf lessons) is that most golfers are either to ball fixated, and/or accelerate club & arms too much at start of downswing. These are the reasons (primarily) that they fail to start with the lower body, and get to their left side. I've yet to meet the person with no club in their hands that couldn't easily shift weight to their target foot. For those who are less flexible and strong, they should try to do exactly the same sequence, it's just for their body they will get much less separation between hips/shoulders/arms than an elite player would get. They will also do it with a lot less speed, but it can still be efficient. Hope this helps. All the best, Adam
Excellent content! Trying to correct a 20 plus year incorrect swing is not easy but I'm on to something when i find a video like this that suits my learning style.
anthony donofrio I took a lesson with Adam at Mediterra back around Christmas. My iron play changed for the better 20 minutes into the lesson. I guess I the best recommendation is the fact that I’m going for a few lessons this coming winter while on vacation in Florida. Good luck.
Anthony, believe me, it's worth a lesson with Adam. Did some lessons like Tim Daniels and they help tremendously. Highly recommended to work with Adam in person if possible. Plus he's a great guy.
great lesson Adam, just tried it in my golf net and I got a really good feeling of anchoring on my left foot through impact. Even though I am a low handicap player I always finish on my toes with a feeling of falling over. This lesson helps a lot with my balance
Clearing the hips is vital; my swing path is towards 1.30pm, focusing on burying the club handle in the back of the ball, which holds my angle for the late release. The swing goes towards 1.30pm and hips clearing brings the swing around from 1.30pm to 12.00pm down the line. Do you think my thinking is correct?
Hard to comment without seeing your swing. Generally when a player has too much of an in to out path their upper trunk (arms connected to trunk, not hips) isn't rotating enough. Early extension is often the case also Best, Adam
Here's something I do... I have a tendency to over swing with my arms at the top. So, right before I reach the top of my backswing, I'll start initiating my legs, and hips, to start my downswing. This works two fold. It shortens my backswing a bit, and also starts my sequence off correctly. So, if you're someone that finds it hard to "pause" at the top, give this a try. Like he said... There's more than one way to make that dynamic move, to start your downswing. But, it's a necessary athletic move, if you want club head speed.
I used to twist my hips using my lower torso muscles and quads but my lower back always hurt after playing a round of golf or a session at the driving range. I’ve been working on using my glutes-hamstrings and ground shear forces to push my hips back (away from the ball). Provides clear space to swing my arms and my back doesn’t hurt. It also helps me not stand up in the backswing or early extend during the downswing-impact. Your thoughts?
Adam is the best. Really easy to follow and his content is super relatable. Its like learning how to play golf with your dad. His instruction is great. I wish he had an Instagram acct. :) Thank you for uploading such helpful videos and growing the game of golf sir.
Hello Adam, this lesson was particularly helpful for me. Until now I have not been clearing my hips correctly. A noticeable improvement after doing the pause drill and practicing this on the range. I am an SGA Premium Member and I watch your TH-cam videos as well as the Master collection videos on the SGA website. Have you ever considered putting the TH-cam videos (or at least the links) on the SGA website?
Adam, I am a faithful follower and owner of your dvd set. I have a unique problem. Backswing plane is fine but I have a Colin Montgomery finish. My coach is trying to get me to finish left with a coordinated hip turn. He says my club face is open at contact and when I finish left it is square to my target line. I'm afraid of pulling the ball left. Any ideas?? Dave from Virginia Beach...
Thanks Dave. I’d look at video (or ask that you look together with your coach) as well as use a launch monitor to determine your swing path through impact, and the overall shape of your follow through Best, Adam
Hi Adam, great content as usual? I note in the video that Bubba's toe line (stance) is quite open at address, but Paul Casey's are quite square? Does having them open at address help with the hip turn through the downswing? And can you please do a piece on the dreaded reverse pivot and the power loss it create's?
Graham, Thanks. There have been a number of successful players that don't set their feet parallel to the target line. I'll try to get to the reverse pivot. All the best, Adam
Great explanation!! Love how you show what to do. Does make me think of Chuck Berry's "The Twist" dance when I was a little kid. Great videos, you do explain well!!
Hi Adam...Just a little info on me.I use to do the hip bump and tilt but I no longer can swing like that.I have a si joint problem in my back. The tilt just hurts too much. Maybe thats what caused it or made it worse.I'm trying to do it like you by putting the pressure on the front leg than turn through the shot. But when I try this I have no club head speed and I'm losing so much distance on my golf shots.Feels like I'm swinging outside in. I know it's hard without seeing my swing...but if you can help I sure would appreciate it. Thank you...
As you say, hard to say without seeing you swing. I’d put a few on film and see if you are in fact swinging from out to in, feel can be very deceptive All the best, Adam
Adam, thanks for the video. I really like your ability to explain and demonstrate the feels of the golf swing. This is a great one and one that I struggle with. I'll watch it multiple times I'm sure.
Tyan, Hard to say without seeing you, but I recommend putting your attention on closing the clubface more in the downswing. Hope this helps. Best, Adam
Adam, great video as always. Helps to explain how to increase club head speed and generate power. As you watch the video, note that all the pros keep that trailing elbow tucked in. That, along with the hip movement, is key. I can now hit my 3W off the tee 250Y w/o tons of effort.
I've watched 3 of your videos on hip turn, really helpful, especially helps to prevent too much early overswinging with arms, and allows me to swing more inside to out with hands closer to body; seeing this right? Second question, where is your weight on left foot, inside or outside heal, as this (hip slide) seems to shift it outside, is that okay?
Thanks Kent. Yes, sounds like you are on the right track. Regards left foot, initially weight goes more to the ball of the left shoe, from there pushing up and back towards heel, maybe a little on outside of foot. Best, Adam
I’m new to golf and love your videos. Is there any sort of order I can watch your videos in for best results. I find myself trying to do to many things and getting ahead of myself. Thanks
Thanks, and glad you like the videos. If you go to www.scratchgolfacademy.com I have full courses there, designed for going at your own pace. Thanks, Adam
I've been really working on and having much more success in improvement getting my hips through during lag, but I really like the drill you have of pushing the club back before down swing, helps me 'feel' it and improve timing of the snap, but would you ever recommend doing this during golfing?
OK took this on the course and was consistently overshooting my approach shots🤪. It's more difficult to apply with the longer clubs but I'm hoping it will eventually help my drives as well!
This is one of the best vids I’ve seen for a while, great content Bazza!

Thanks for the comment.

What is driving the hips?
It would be a combination of shifting weight towards the target, and rotating the hips.

Hard to say without seeing you swing, but it sounds better. I have a number of videos at the channel on that general topic.

I like the tennis / baseball analogy. Great “spring” drill too.
Thanks Ronald

Superb video Adam, fantastic swing too! Will take all this onboard. Hiptastic!!
Thanks very much Graham.

Adam is the best. Really easy to follow and his content is super relatable. Its like learning how to play golf with your dad. His instruction is great. I wish he had an Instagram acct. :) Thank you for uploading such helpful videos and growing the game of golf sir.
Thanks very much for the comment Phil.

Thanks John, we may do that in the future.

Great description, thank you
Thanks bill, glad you found it helpful.

I’d look at video (or ask that you look together with your coach) as well as use a launch monitor to determine your swing path through impact, and the overall shape of your follow through

Adam excellent video on one the key movements to creating good contact with the ball. I will try this exercise until I’ve cracked it.
Thanks Charles, hope it helps.

great video, Merci
Glad you liked it Michel.

I like the Hal Sutton suggestion, feel like back hip is hitting the ball.
Sounds good William, thanks.

Great video. I’ll give this a go, no matter what I’ve try my hips are only ever back to the address position at impact rather than open.
Hope you can break through.

Power and “zest”. That’s exactly what I need.
Hope you get it Brandon

@@Scratchgolfacademy thanks Adam. Your videos are the tops.
Most helpful. I'll try it.
Thanks Steve, and hope it goes well.

I like the thought of what you got going in the separation, looks good for an old guy to work on, now if I only knew of one.
Hope you make progress.

Graham,
Thanks. There have been a number of successful players that don't set their feet parallel to the target line.
I'll try to get to the reverse pivot.

Great explanation!! Love how you show what to do. Does make me think of Chuck Berry's "The Twist" dance when I was a little kid. Great videos, you do explain well!!
Thanks Denny.

Chuck Berry?...Chubby Checker!!
I’d put a few on film and see if you are in fact swinging from out to in, feel can be very deceptive
All the best, Adam
Adam, thanks for the video. I really like your ability to explain and demonstrate the feels of the golf swing. This is a great one and one that I struggle with. I'll watch it multiple times I'm sure.
Thanks for the comment Jerry.

Working on it thank you
Best of luck.

Hi Adam, i am struggling with slice here, is it because i move my hip too early ???
Tyan,
Hard to say without seeing you, but I recommend putting your attention on closing the clubface more in the downswing. Hope this helps.

Adam, great video as always. Helps to explain how to increase club head speed and generate power. As you watch the video, note that all the pros keep that trailing elbow tucked in. That, along with the hip movement, is key. I can now hit my 3W off the tee 250Y w/o tons of effort.
Glad to hear it Edward.
All the best, Adam
I've watched 3 of your videos on hip turn, really helpful, especially helps to prevent too much early overswinging with arms, and allows me to swing more inside to out with hands closer to body; seeing this right? Second question, where is your weight on left foot, inside or outside heal, as this (hip slide) seems to shift it outside, is that okay?
Thanks Kent.
Yes, sounds like you are on the right track. Regards left foot, initially weight goes more to the ball of the left shoe, from there pushing up and back towards heel, maybe a little on outside of foot.

Love the vids

Thanks Chad, glad you likes the video.

Scratch Golf Academy Thank you Sir!!
Great info. I've seen many of your vids. Why do we not hear sound at contact? Are you hitting foam balls?
Jason,
Thanks. No, they are real balls. Sound isn't always picked uo, sometimes we put a more clear artificial impact sound in.

Outstanding information Adam. Many thanks.
Thanks very much Craig.

I've been really working on and having much more success in improvement getting my hips through during lag, but I really like the drill you have of pushing the club back before down swing, helps me 'feel' it and improve timing of the snap, but would you ever recommend doing this during golfing?
Thanks Kent. Certainly, give it a try when playing, see if you think it helps you.

What a nice swing you have.
Thanks very much.

Wow, I just tried this in the yard with some foam practice balls and almost immediately felt a huge increase in club head speed! Thanks!
Glad to hear it Michelle!

OK took this on the course and was consistently overshooting my approach shots🤪. It's more difficult to apply with the longer clubs but I'm hoping it will eventually help my drives as well!
