Malaska Golf // Why "Turn Your Hips" is a Bad Concept in your Golf Swing

  • I am often told I am at odds with a lot of the golf industry with my instruction. And, yes, sometimes this is true. I believe that a major issue with how golfers are taught is the terminology or tasks we give them.
The idea of turning your hips in order to generate speed is a misconception, and it is one that if forced can end up hurting players.
Hip movement, centripetal force are key to directing the momentum of the golf club in your golf swing. But, it's not a turn.
Don't just play golf. Understand it.

I’ve never heard this before and learning so much from Mike. I had to go to the range after work. Right hip back, left hip back with an easy 3/4 swing and I left there so happy. That’s the most consistent I’ve been in a very long time.

the single most helpful video about "turning" of the lower body/hips, ever. The word " turn" has been a killer for me and my back, never mind never feeling in control. Your explanation helps me easily feel how everything is connected together as opposed to one part of my body fighting against the other part.

Same, I kept "turning" and the club would come way inside and then I'd lift go way across the line and it was a crap shoot

Mike, I was a PGM student at ASU and taught golf after college. I wish I could go back to all of my old students and my younger self with your philosophy. It just makes the golf swing SO much simpler. I recently got back into playing after years off and I am so glad I found your videos after “trying to hit positions, and ROTATE” I’ve always felt the game in my hands and arms and I’m so glad you reminded me to get back to that as the focus. Sincerely, thank you so much

Hi Mike , Just wanted to say a very big thank you to you, you are an amazing teacher, I have been studying your videos for some time now and finally understand that I have had the wrong concepts of swing all my life even though I have won many competitions it has always been a struggle . My swing now is straighter , longer and more consistent than it was 30 years ago, absolutely a wonderful blissful joy to know and feel that I know what I am doing . Thank you Thank you thank you ....

This is great! Never realized that there was a difference. When I rotate my hips on the backswing, the left hip gets closer to the target line. When I do what you say which is push my right hip back on the back swing, my left hip stays in place. Also notice pushing the right hip back keeps me from swaying. Very cool stuff.

  • @Shizi7
    @Shizi7 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Hi Mike. Thanks to another of your videos where you used a cardboard cutout to show how the pelvis moves, I came to an understanding today about the hips. I loaded into or learned to make my right hip deep in my backswing, but where I struggled was how my left hip was supposed to work. I thought I was suppose to toggle my hips along the angle formed by my deep right hip. Your video showed that from my deep right hip, the center of my pelvis should be moving away from the ball which should produce an easy move to an open and back left hip. Some things happened that never made sense until today: my left leg posted properly and I figured why some power hitters pull their front legs back. Well, it is not so much that they pull it back, but the action (proper action) of the hips could do it if done powerfully. Another discovery is that because of my bad pelvis action, I felt a sharp pan in my hip. Another drill that brought clarity about moving the hips was the step back drill. It became clear that the movement of my left lower body had been wrong.

I used to think that I had "rotate" my hips but I've changed my mindset after watching your videos. I now push my hips out of my golf swing like two linear pistons that happens to turn my body around to let my arms through. Thank you!

Great explanation.........not pushing the body where it should not go...brilliant!!!! My new practice drill is to put my feet and knees together and take swings. This really gets you to understand how the hips work without any manipulation. The feel can then be taken with a normal stance. Good stuff Mike.

I was taught to "turn my hips" and every instructor who watched my swing tacitly approved my rotation; turn to the right on the backswing, turn to the left coming through the ball. The problem with this motion is that unless my timing was perfect I was either hitting big push-fades or big pull-hooks. The bigger the club the bigger the trouble. It wasn't until I saw your instructional video in which you described Jack Nicklaus' "pull back" of his left hip that I realized what I had been doing wrong all these years. Both moves "clear your hips" but by pushing the left hip backward with the left leg the club stays on the target line much longer and the neck vertebrae - essentially the axis of the swing - stay over the ball longer. I would see golfers finish their swing in a "C" position and wonder why I couldn't. Now I know. Thanks, Mike!

This is such a hard concept for me to understand. I come from a baseball background and struggle with over rotation with my drives. I slice hard to the right. This video makes so much sense I can’t wait to try this in my practice regimen. Thank you so much!

  • @MegaRobbo72

Great video. I play off a low handicap but slide into the ball with my hips and end up with my left knee bent through impact. The concept of the left leg pushing the left hip back rather than the hips sliding towards the target has really helped. Thanks.

After struggling with my swing lately - having blown out from 4 to 7 - thanks largely to some bad swing timing that's crept into my game, this has been absolutely fabulous. Conceptually, this for me was easy to apply from the first swing and not only do I feel in more control of my position at impact, my consistency (fairways hit etc.) has been vastly improved, confidence is up and I'm even getting better distance now. A truly wonderful piece of insight here and big thanks from Sydney, Aust - a very grateful Dave :-)

I LOVE this! YOU"RE the first instructor in my 60 years of struggle who has ever described this. Rory McIlroy I'm not---at the very least he's a six-foot something bean-pole, and I'm a five-foot seven inch fireplug. More important, however, is that as we both near the top of our backswing, our weight is already shifting leftward. Pushing away (back and up) from the force generated by our arc is the easiest, most natural body movement possible. I just LOVE it. Peter Kennedy MD

Ok. this is a great video. I tried out today. The whole left hip as a gas pedal visual is awesome. My son who just started also benefitted especially since you related to baseball. He also thought the turn hips issue I was giving him was awkward and caused him to sway right on backswings (bad). Your concept seems more natural and repeatable. Of note, this video is a great complement to your other video describing how the right hand wrist flick and swing plane. Makes total sense. Once again, son liked this since that is also like baseball. I have been completely fixated on left arm and left hand for nearly all my years of hacker golf. Just in 1 session today, I was crushing it on all clubs. Higher loft on all iron shots and 90% straight. Driver shot must have been 15 to 20 yards further. If anything, I had some left hook shots which meant focusing more on the right hand drill placement. Its as if I completely silenced by left arm and hand. Atleast seems like the work the same. I am a 12 handicapper now and think this will help me with consistency to get to 7-8 handicap. Now to focus on chipping which often leads me most to that dreaded double bogey. Thank You Mike!

This was insightful. In boxing or martial arts we face the target with our feet and squared shoulders. As our shoulder of the arm throwing the punch rotates towards the target the hip follows. Arms and shoulders before hips. But the hips do rotate and hard if the punch is strong. I see a subtle difference in the golf swing as Mike explains. Good stuff. Clarified the movement of the hips and their role in the process.

Mike, every time I see a video mentioning hips I check it out. Yours's really stood out being a bad concept. I watched the video at 10 pm Saturday after the first round of our club championship down the road from you at Verrado. Pretty good first round with smoke and mirrors. After having shoulder replacement 3.5 years ago and loosing 80 yards the search has been constant. So after watching this on Saturday just once, I got up Sunday morning and shot one of my best rounds in years. Finished 3rd gross and won the net. I was on cloud nine. Played again yesterday and played even better with that simple linear tip. I missed 1 fairway in 3 days, made 9 birdies ( a year's worth btw) and feel amazing about my golf for the first time in years. Guys that hit it by me by 30 yards were actually wondering what the heck happened. I now actually believe that shooting my at (68) is a real possibility from the real tees. My tomb stone is going to say "He never moved up" You gave me what years of searching has failed to deliver. Hope you can get away sometime and join us in the SWSGA. Thank you so much.

Mike I've been rotating my hips for 20 years (7,3 hcp). I have followed you for a few years and I totally get all your explanations about the difference between what you feel and what you actually do. I finally got around to have a sound tempo through your explanation of the swing being a motion, not a lot of positions. Recently, I finally got a new pro who changed two things in my swing, and told me to practice this for a while without hitting a ball. First, he said, don't lift your right heel, let your right foot roll. Secondly, stretch your right leg in the back swing.
Suddenly, I was re-born as a golfer and everything you have been talking about made sense. I felt that it was the upper body that led the hips and not the other way around. It's still winter I Norway, so I don't now how well I perform on the golf coarse. However, I can see that I'm hitting the ball on the same spot on the blade more or less all the time. You and Anders Kristiansen (new pro) has really taken me to golf paradise. I'm looking forward to a future with better consistency.

For years, I would watch the pros push with their left leg, seeming to "jump" right when they swing. I would try that, and top the ball! A couple years ago, I realized they are pushing their left hip backwards with their left leg - just as you describe! Left leg straightening fast and hard (to "rotate" the hips) is far easier, more natural, and less likely to cause injury - than "twisting" real hard!
Thank you! You make things so understandable.

So pushing the trail hip back needs a resistance from below that point. Which would be pressure of the trail foot not going back to the heel but resisting against the trail hip going back.

Please make a video talking about impact. Hitting off the ground is much harder than hitting off a tee.

One day playing golf against you, chatting about your past, would be all I'd need.
    I do best off confirmation.
Thanks for dedicating time to try and improve our game!

Firing the hips or rotating the hips cause over the top because moving the hips so fast doesn't give time to shallow the club the centrifugal force will sling the hands away from the body.

I think there is an issue with people tightening up at impact that sometimes go away when people focus on the body. It actuality if people can focus on swinging the club without changing grip pressure near impact they would get a better result.

I live in Korea and I have become a big fan of you and Joe! ^^ I am very new to the sports of golf. But because of you, I have thought Joe was very famous one in the golf history. However I can not find much information about him except 1978 golf magazine article about his rotor method throughout google. Did he ever leave any book about his golf lesson?
