  • Our 2 day stay in the Daintree Village was our best birding experience on our FNQ trip so far!
    We had booked the Boatman River cruise for the Sunset & the Sunrise trips to ensure that we had the best chance of seeing the birds that we wanted to see... and that turned out to be the best decision.
    Daintree Village is a small town located on the Daintree River. This river is a diverse habitat for many species of birds and animals. The Daintree Boatman Wildlife tours suits anyone who likes small groups, a comfortable environment and enjoys a tour guide who knows their stuff!
    Daintree Boatman Wildlife Cruises - www.daintreeri...
    We also stayed in a really lovely airbnb called Egrets Rest Daintree Village - www.airbnb.com...
    The birds we saw on this part of our trip:
    Papuan Frogmouth
    Sacred Kingfisher
    Shining Flycatcher
    Black Butcherbird
    Eastern Cattle Egret
    Little Kingfisher
    Great-billed Heron
    Striated Heron
    Spangled Drongo
    Hornbill Friarbird
    Olive-backed Sunbird
    Australasian Figbird
    Bush Stone-Curlew

      Too true!! Murray knew where to go & who his audience was on each trip. The sunset tour was all tourists looking for crocodiles (apart from us I think) and the sunrise tour was a far more serious group of birders. I would have liked to stay a few extra days & gone on another 1 or 2 boat trips! It was so much fun & really enjoyable!! 😀 ~ K

    The Queensland adventure that keeps on giving. Loved this episode, especially the Great Billed Heron footage. For such a big bird they can be quite tricky to find. Looking forward to the next chapter!

      Thanks Roger! 😀 This part of the trip was really fun! I could have stayed longer & gone on more boat trips just to see what else we could find. There was a lot riding on the sunrise trip to see the Great-billed Heron! (and high hopes of better views of the Little Kingfisher too). The sunrise trip was all serious birders so everyone was thrilled to get great views of the GBH... lots of oohs & ahhhs & clicking cameras!! 🤣 ~ K

    That Little Kingfsher - stunning! What a fabulous trip, Karen & Nimal. Love your photography and the detail. So easy to watch, especially as you let the background sounds and soft music complement the amazing subjects & scenery.

    • @naturephotographychallenge
      @naturephotographychallenge  12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That Little Kingfisher was such a special moment!! They are so tiny & very difficult to see.... and they are SO FAST!! We saw one on the sunset tour as well but no way we could take a photo of it!! Add in dark conditions & a tiny bird the size & speed of a bee (haha!! not quite) but viewed from a rocking boat and we thought there was no way we would ever get a photo!! So happy we had better views on the sunrise trip!
      We get a bit of flack about music & background sounds... so I'm quite pleased to hear that the sounds & music did work together in this video!! Thanks so much for the feedback!! ❤ ~ K

    Hey! We only had time for one trip, really. Opted for private boating with Murray. Talked with peeps that had taken the afternoon trip the day we arrived. They had seen (on the Crocodile Express!) Great-billed Heron on both their trips. We thought: "Either that's a good omen, OR the Birding God thinks the sighting quota of the GBH was reached for the week/month/year, so no more views of that bird until the next period.
    Sadly, it was the latter. No matter where and how Murray searched, they where nowhere to be seen. He was almost beside himself, since every tour had seen them the 3 prior days.
    As I always say: "It's better to be lucky than skilled".
    We got nice views of all the 4 kingfishers, but the Little was a bit un-cooperative and we got no clean views. We were happy anyway, bcs we got'em on photo (and a little video), which we didn't in Kakadu.
    We got to see Hook as well.
    No Papuan Frogmouths either, they hid bcs when we were there is the window of time when the Frogmouths have a bit of honeymoon before starting to breed, Murray explained.
    Lucky us for getting them at Kingfisher Park, then! First morning they sat close'ish, but not on the same branch. Second/last morning just one was in the tree. Ann thought the female was away nestbuilding, then.
    We have seen/heard zero other nightbirds, except for glimpses of singing Larg-tailed Nightjars along Portland Road at Cape York. And that's not a lifer for us (pouts).
    Still no Emus anywhere...😬
    Anyway, talk to you later. We just gave an evening mealworm meal to a lovely family of Whipbirds. Mom, dad and 2 younglings.😍

    • @naturephotographychallenge
      @naturephotographychallenge  10 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Say hi to the Whipbirds for me!! Have the Riflebirds & Catbirds been joining you too?? They will eventually turn up if they know food is on offer 😅 Bad luck you didn't get to see the GBH but we also didn't see them on the evening trip so it's just luck really!! Same with the Little Kingfisher. If we had only done the sunset cruise, we would have been a little disappointed for bird spotting. The boat trip is amazing though!! Any time... any day! If we had stayed a few extra days, I would have done a river cruise every day just for fun! 😀 ~ K

      @@naturephotographychallenge The Catbirds and Riflebirds did indeed show up, and on the last hour of the last morning (i e 9 AM today) an adult male gave a display show for us on a stump 6 meters from our veranda! Wow! We dipped on Chowchilla, despite our best tries, that obviously wasn't good enough. We will probably dip on Beach Thick-knee/Stone Curlew as well, our last chance is tomorrow before dawn at the south end of the Esplanade. We'll see if we manage, it's a bit tricky what with the Michaelmas Cay tour a few hours later. The winds are still a bit too strong for our (Håkan's mainly) taste. Jury's still out if he'll stay in town or not.

    • @naturephotographychallenge
      @naturephotographychallenge  10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Hummingbirder1 We heard there was a Beach Stone-Curlew on a beach in Cairns but missed seeing it. But... gosh if you don't see a Bush Stone-Curlew in Cairns I'd be very surprised!! We had them sitting next to our rental car in the carpark when we came back from a quick trip to Fitzroy Island.
      So wonderful you saw a Riflebird displaying!! Aren't they marvelous!!
      Best of luck with the Michaelmas Cay trip tomorrow!! Nimal really wanted to do that but the only day available was really windy & I'm not a fan of rough boat trips. Next time I guess!!

    • @naturephotographychallenge
      @naturephotographychallenge  9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I'm pretty sure that @Hummingbirder1 is concerned about seeing Beach Stone-curlew (aka Beach Thick-knee), not Bush Stone-curlew - no doubt has seen plenty of the latter already! Hopefully will get Emus on the South Australian part of the trip. Also possible in Western Australia - we saw some while en route from Cape Naturaliste to Augusta. - Nimal
