Thank you for the heads up! As much as I love my G95 I find myself using my older GX80 much more often. I think updating the GX-line would have made more sense at this point, but I'm not complaining! I'm genuinely happy for the pure fact a new MFT camera is being released.
OM System is also working on new cameras. I hope they release a compact camera like the Mju or a retro-designed model in the style of the Olympus OM-2, but with a digital sensor.
We’ve had mft Gh7, G9ii, G97, G100D releases recently. Nice to see something happening even if only minor updates in some cases. I suspect they’re saving the compact camera updates we’re dreaming of for the GX line.
Saw this just minutes before your post popped up. To me, it seems like they might be trying to clean the G7, G85 and G95 off the books with a updated processor and sensor. $895 USD price includes a $400sh lens ($499.99 USD list price as a stand alone purchase from Panasonic USA). BTW--the GH7 is on sale plus you get a free XLR2 (with 32 bit float audio) free w/purchase. A big nothing burger as far as I'm concerned. Everyday that there is not a new MFT performance rangefinder out,,, It's thousands lost in sales and reputation.
Gains IBIS + splash proof + rear dial over the G100D, so a useful place in the lineup. Still leaves a lot of space for an enthusiast model, with 25 Mpixels and PDAF, 10 bit video, below the G9-II like a GX9-II.
Would 'underwhelmed' be a fair summary of your reaction? I just do not see where the market is for this model. If you were to pull my toe nails out, I might concede (just) that at least there is a new M43 model - even if it's nothing more than a re-hash of what we have had before. What the format really needs is an OM1 ii lite and a G9 ii lite. I'd be first in the queue for either (or both) of those.
A good way for Panasonic to get rid of all the spare parts they`ve got lying around, unless people latch onto the fact that they can but a second hand G95 for a fraction of the price!
Maybe Panasonic is saying 'm4/3 is not dead' with the G97. Btw: I was handling a Panasonic G100D yesterday at a big box store yesterday and given the compact but usable size and price, it struck me that it gets back to the small but powerful and affordable design that gives M4/3 distinct advantages. Used G100s are very affordable and for a compact interchangeable lens camera it stands out above the rest of the market.
See many folks want new rangefinder style camera because the look is appealing. Same with the retro style old SLR look. Personally I’ll take cameras that are modern in style like my G85 and G9. The G85 with a 14 2.5 is stealth, draws little attention and is very well made for a consumer model. If I want an all metal retro camera I will load up one of the Nikkormats and really go retro. My point. I think the G95 is far more practical than would be a new GX95.
Hi Grant, thanks for this update. I already have the G80 and G90, which I love as travel cameras, will probably pass on this one and get a second GH5ii body on the used market. Shame they didn't put the new phase detect AF in there. Is there still a crop in 4K video?
I mean, I'm happy they're still investing in the system. It feels like they're holding back on a lot of newer releases however. I understand there's gotta be contrast between product, but it feels like old hat served cold in this case. When I first read the hot sheet about it's features it felt like they were saying a whole lot of nothing. I know legally a product can be "fluffed" in advertising. This really feels like it's being advertised to take advantage of people just getting into photography or the M4/3 system; as I feel most people who've been into photography for even a short while would see through the flowery (lengthy really) explanations of features that could be construed in a more concise way that's easier to understand. Maybe if it was explained more realistically I'd be more excited about this new release. It just seems like a reach. As far as the used market, prices are ridiculous right now, so maybe they know more about pricing than they're being given credit for. Sorry to have rambled. Thanks for the video
Sounds like they upgraded the number? Same contrast detect AF, what was the point. 847.99 pre-order on B&H. Reminds me of the GH6, everyone was waiting for a new AF, and it didn't happen. I would have bought this today if it had phase detect, the G9II has great AF.
I was super excited when I got the email from B&H last night, then I looked at it closer and I don't see much that's groundbreaking in the specs. The body style for the point and shoot was interesting to me, but I'd rather see what OM System is doing. I am praying for that retro-style or pocketable street camera! Hey, at least they're still making M43 cameras. This we can be happy about.... ??
Sorry if I missed this but is the 4k video in 10 bit or just 8 bit? Or do we know? The zs99 looks really cool, amazing zoom for what it is. *Update, I watched Richard Wongs video, the 97 is only in 8bit.
I would have gladly paid $1k usd for a GM camera with those specs… but really hoping for a GX8ii with 90% of what the G9ii has. This is better than the g100 as a photo/video camera, but still no pdaf. And given the discounts we’re seen on the G9ii, it’s hard to recommend this over telling someone to save a bit more and go for a much superior camera.
I have a G90 and love it, but have been hoping they would release an updated version with the new autofocus and not so crooped video, but sadly this does not. Doesn't seem to have any significant benefits over the G90. In a way I'm pleased as not tempted to buy it. 😊
Well, totally done waiting for a GX upgrade. Been shooting Lumix since 2013 exclusively. Because of Panasonic not listening to their core MFT base I have purchased alternate methods of creativity such as a new American Professional II Thinline Stratocaster and a vintage 1962 Gretsch Chet Atkins Tennessean. Looks like that 60th Anniversary Fender Jazz bass is coming home with me tomorrow as I don't want/need any of those two cameras. Stupid Panasonic....
@ looks excellent: definitely a step up. The warmth of the image gives it away. Do you know Seb of Red Frame Tech? He has developed a LUT converting G9 footage (and presumably GH5) to GH6. It works well. He gives it away although you can leave a donation on checkout.
Surely the purpose of the camera is to take pleasing photos. I bought a G85 with the kit lense (12 to 60mm) for less than $900. The 16 megapixel sensor is enough and the camera is enough. If I didn’t have a camera I would buy the G97 but there will be no upgrade from me.
@ If you can’t take beautiful photos with a G85 you won’t be able to take beautiful photos with an upgrade. My biggest criticism of the G85 is the bloke holding it i.e. me.
I'm trying to get excited about this camera. But is there anything new or exciting about it? It doesn't seem so, so I have to ask myself why is it being released? Who is it being market to? And is it going to improve the reputation of M43 cameras? I'm worried it might be a bit of a white elephant. I think my G9ii is safe for the moment...
Hmmm. G95 with USB-C = G97. Panasonic spent energy delivering a camera no one is really asking for. Guess that's why there's no GX-9 mkii.... The camera everyone does want.
Not incredible but perhaps they will stop selling the G7 and instead sell this? I mean quite entry level with a few step ups. I believe this is the upgrade step and the price should probably be $700-800 to be realistic
Woo! A new M43 camera! Uhhh... was there much outcry for an updated G95...? I think this one has pushed me over to the side of the constant 'm43 jilted me' moaners. C'mon, Panasonic and OM. Look at all the hype and chatter over the Fuji X-M5. Show them how it's done!
Looks a bit under-whelming. I'm surprised you managed to squeeze seven and a half minutes of content from this! I'm at least half joking, of course. If you're a relative beginner in the market for a NEW M43 camera, this could be a good choice. Personally, I think you can do well on the second-hand market for a fraction of the cost.
Do you really-really need „even more megapixels” in m4/3? IMHO they should stay with that 20 Mpx and rather strive to get better IQ: better contrast, better colours, lower noise level etc.
In my opinion, that's a disappointing announcement. There are already better choices in the overheated second hand market, so I cannot understand why would I buy this instead of GX9 or OM-5 which is brand new without lens -850 pounds. Nikon's Z50 II is probably even better refresh than this.
They should have added phase detection autofocus. What a wasted opportunity. It's a camera with 10 year old tech and usbc. Nothing really new. Great body, but not much else.
@@beholder2012 I agree that G95 fine camera - I myself use it and like it. But if you make new camera you should add something more sufficient - let say PDAF and no crop 4K. Other brands has all that and more in similar priced models.
@@maximvasilyev8003 agreed, but in fact THEY DIDN'T MAKE a new camera. They simply made that fine and proven model to use some more of the „current technology”. It's actually good idea - why should they still manufacture G95 in its exact form from 6 years ago, when they are able to implement its „gradual evolution”? Maybe in 98 (whichever number it'll get…) it'll feature PDAF. Let's consider this „release” as „face lifting” rather than „a new model”. I guess their approach was: „it's still good enough, but we can add a few minor improvements, so let's do it”. Why not? Quite a sensible approach.
No one asked for this camera. No one needs it. Not for that pice. Anyone that has $1k wouldnt buy that crap with contrast based autofocus when the G95 exists and the Sony ZV-E10 exists. The Olympus and Fujifilm cameras in the same price range too. Panasonic has just been constantly taking the piss. Smh

Out of all the cameras I’ve used in the last 5 years the g95 has been my favorite.

It's great to see that the G97 features 4k photo mode, which is a very creative mode, sadly lacking from the G9 II, and live composite mode.

yes - and I clearly said that twice in the video -

This was clearly to comply to EU requirements of usbc.

Contrast detect autofocus... I think they have leftovers of the old sensor they need to sell.
OTOH it's doing its job - isn't it?
Totally agree!

G90 (G95) has no time limitation I had it for years, I can't understand the difference
Ditto. My G85 will do unlimited 4k30 as well. Never has overheated.
It almost looks to be the G99 that was Japan only but with different firmware and updates to the menus.
Seems like a. Entry level body and a point and shoot similar ito the Fuji
I suspect Om will release a smaller body like the em10 again.
I wonder why there isn't a micro four thirds super superzoom camera? Wouldn't that be the best of all super zoom cameras?!

I have ordered the g9II and get it in few days.I am very lucky.the gh5II ist also a nice cheep camera for beginner.
The g97 to me is a little weird. Surprised they didn’t do what they did to the g100 with the g100d. This is about the same thing
Are you using the GH6 to film yourself in this video? Looks great!
