  • Do you clench your teeth at night? Are you a nighttime teeth grinder? I am and it has cost me thousands of dollars in dental repair.
But now I wear a nightguard to protect my teeth.
I’ve purchased night-time mouth guards 2 different times from my dentists. The first one cost well over $300. The second one, several years later cost about $240. Both eventually either broke or became unusable due to changes in my teeth.
Since that time I started buying cheap athletic, boil and bite mouth guards and customizing them to my mouth.
I normally shop at Walmart and buy a Wilson Boil and Bite Guard. They cost about $1.
    - See them at Walmart.com www.walmart.com/search/?query...
    - See them at Amazon .com amzn.to/31D1INs
The whole process of making a custom fitting nighttime mouth guard takes about 30 minutes. And the guard will last you for a couple of years.
Watch how I do it and you can do it too.

Tooth grinding over many years gave me cracked molars, 4 of which had to be replaced with crowns, and others damaged. I finally tried an athletic mouth guard from Walmart. It seems to help a lot, but I noticed it eventually acquired some type of calcium or residue buildup which seems to be wearing the tops of my incisors down. Now I brush the rubber guard every morning and sometimes soak it in vinegar to remove the deposits. It has definitely helped reduce the damage to my molars and I don't wake up with a sore jaw and teeth. I only wish I had thought of it 30 years ago.

Good insight. Soaking your mouth guard is always a good idea. And replacing it every couple of years is a good idea as well.

You saved me upwards of £75 here in the UK. I've been suffering from stress and other health issues that has meant I've started grinding my teeth at night. I wake up with horrible jaw pain, my jaw clicks repeatedly when I eat, and it's painful to even have my mouth open long enough to just brush my teeth. I know my dentist would happily have a single mouthguard moulded and made up for me, but at £75 plus whatever fees for the appointment, plus the week-long wait for the guard to be made and sent back to my local dentist, I went searching for another solution.
I didn't know about boil and bite guards until I watched your video. Two minutes after watching, I ordered a set of 5 (!) from Amazon that arrived the next day. They were so easy to customise, and I now have a top and bottom set of 3mm thick guards and a 6mm thick top guard to try out and decide which works best for me, along with a spare each of the 3mm and 6mm guards for the future.
It cost me less than £10 and I had to wait less than 24 hours to receive and use them, and they're no different to a mouthguard I had made years and years ago (and can't use now) except they're more comfortable to wear to sleep!
    Thank you!

I've been doing this for 30 years! A few years ago I gave in and bought a hard one from dentist @ $400. I saw an Oral surgeon due to jaw pain and he said the train myself to keep lips together and teeth apart throughout the day. This has helped with preventing pain in jaw from clenching and grinding at night because the habit of clenching during the day has decreased and so has the night time clench and grind. Helps alot to learn to meditate and direct stress to ABS! CLench ABS instead of jaw! Still use night guard no matter what!

Fall 2022: model shown, at walmart about $13 now, but still, very happy to learn of THE MOST economical path, thank you!!! Seems MOST everyone can have lifelong benefit to wearing night guards, if plastic used is not toxic: very difficult to learn this info. Discovered in my 60s now, teeth are loose bc of night grinding, causing growing problems that might have been avoided. Thanks ! 🙏✨💜

I might not use scissors or an exacto knife but the idea is all that matters. Thanks for the help. Remember people, this might not work for you as well and some of you might actually need professional mouth guards. Don’t use cheap tactics if your situation is very serious. I just grind my teeth when I play games online and not at night.

When I cut mine down, I use a pair of small electronics type wire cutters.
The kind of wire cutters you use in tight spots inside of small electronics .
I bought a few pairs. They’re super inexpensive on Amazon.
I keep one set in my shave kit just for cutting fingernails and toenails.
Also, for cleaning instead of alcohol, I use basic H from Shaklee diluted 50% with distilled water. And about twice a week I put it inside of a baby bottle disinfecting machine with UV lights inside. I also use the UV disinfecting machine for my keys my wallet, my cell phone, my eyeglasses, all kinds of stuff it helped cut down on the amount of colds and flu that I get too.
I wish I would’ve started wearing a bite guard when I was a teenager. I’ve paid up to $400 for NTI Night guard made by my dentist. What a rip off they only last me about one year.

I have a $500 night guard that fits like a glove and is ergonomically correct to my mouth. Unfortunately people are not taught to invest in their oral care like they would with their car. Your entire jaw area what you can see and not see is as important as taking care of your vehicle and your residence. Sometimes they need expensive repairs.

My dentist quoted me $750 for a mouth guard, and they said they were giving me a discount! Thanks for helping me understand their scam.
EDIT: I recently bought a professional mouth guard from a new dentist for $350. They work much better than this chewy garbage that makes my jaw hurt.

For anyone who is watching, this will protect your teeth, but you will also grind even more because the mouth guard is soft, and your mouth wants to bite it. This means your muscles will clench even more throughout the day. That's why you need to get a mouth guard from the dentist. The mouth guard they give you is hard, and also helps train your mouth to not clench even without it.
    - Someone who already tried this and finally got a proper mouthguard.

Instead of sanding and grinding, just cut them before boiling, and those square edges will round out. You don't want to deal with sanded plastic particles, and you certainly don't want to ingest them.

    • @MoneySmartFamily
      @MoneySmartFamily  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Either way, what is done to the plastic will be sealed by the boiling water.

@@MoneySmartFamily Exactly. Which is why it makes sense to cut out the mess and effort of any sanding/grinding by just pre-cutting to fit.

For me the cutting and sanding was more challenging than I imagined.
I didn't know what grit my bit was that was lying around all this time. Probably gonna have to hit the store and get a new one.
Essentially what this video explains is true though. It's clunkier than the dentist, but after you trim it and IF YOU CAN GET THE DEPTH RIGHT, it's pretty good. Might take a few test runs.

Dentist will take advantage of you!! My daughter got a tooth extracted and they said she needed a graft which is synthetic skin because it was in the top part of her mouth it would affect he sinuses and they were charging $500 for this graft but I didn't have the money so didn't get it. My new dentist was talking to and I brought that up about the graft and she got mad she said that graft only cost them $4 And they should have included that already with the extraction! So yes lways ask around.

This is great an all, except for those that need a properly fit one for bite problems. It doesn't matter, every boil guard I've ever used has made my bite worse over night. Aka for people who only grind, great. But anyone with actual tmd/tmj, not likely.

I was also told to make sure the guard does not touch or cover your gums as it dames them and to cut the edges so it does not touch the gums. Yet as soon as I do that it no longer stays in my mouth and no longer fits. I keep buying these and cannot get it to stay in once I cut the top edges. But again I cannot have the top edges touch my gums so seriously how can this work?
