(just broke my canon m50 screen today lol) tip from the accident - is to get a sturdy tripod especially for outside usage and be sure to make sure the legs are as far out as possible. I tried to bring them in to make the height a bit more vertical which led to wind pushing it over hitting the ground and breaking the screen. So make sure your tripod legs are wide especially when you aren’t manning the camera in the moment. Also the screen protector is going on the next one i get lmao seems like a no brainer not sure why i never thought of it. Thank you for sharing your tips and stories!
Thanks for this. Some good ideas here. A couple of things to note: 1. Quite a few of the reviewers of the tempered glass (Pack of 3) Compatible Canon Eos M50 Screen Protector you recommend say that the M50s screen will not close fully because the Screen Protector is too big. 2. Old Pro Tip for protecting lenses and the M50s sensor from dust, rain and so on when changing lenses - change the lenses in a knapsack, or camera back (if it is big enough), or in a big enough plastic bag. Best to squat down to do this, so that you can put the lens and camera on the ground (or flat top of your camera bag) when they are in the plastic bag.
Thanks, good tips. In regards to the screen protector, it closes, but does not “click” in while closed. I just leave it screen out, as the screen is now protected and you can manually turn the screen off, if you don’t want it active.
@@markwiemels Thanks for your reply, Mark. I should have been more precise in describing the Screen Protector problem. The main thing I was trying to get across, though, is that people were unaware that the screen will not close *fully*, and this is a problem for some. This speaks to the issue of the camera being potentially damaged in some way (in this specific case, by debris, grit or other unwanted, potentially damaging agents getting between the screen and back of the body, into the hinge and so on).
A minor correction on your battery topic the battery will not leak as they are lithium ion. However a much more serious thing may happen they could light on fire or even explode so if the battery swells put that thing in a tub of sand and find a local place that will properly dispose of it
Hello Mark, thank you for your m50 video series. I live in San Francisco and know all too well the m50's lack of weatherproofing vis-a-vis our famous fog--I damaged my last m50 body due to moisture. One advantage I like about the m50 is the lower liability vs higher-end camera equipment. Not that I'm careless, but I'm more apt to take my m50 with me not only for its diminutive size, but because it don't need to worry about it. I hope Canon doesn't drop the m platform now that the company is making APS-C R-cameras. Thank you!
It’s unlikely they will stop making the M series soon. These rumours have been around for 5 years, and they don’t come from canon, they are just people on social media. I have a video about this on the channel.
RF lenses defeats the advantage of an APS-C camera. Compared to the M mount lenses the RF ones have big 3 disadvantages, size, weight and price. The only lenses missing in the M mount are the super tele/zoom lenses for e.g. wildlife photography. For that purpose I can buy an adapter and an EF/EF-S lens.
My silicon cover was for 4 years straight on my old Canon 1200d. I sold the Canon 1200D. The buyer was surprised how new the body looked. I have also for the canon m50 a silicon cover. But you are absolutely right to check under cover once in awhile for dirt...

Wow. sorry to hear what you have been through, I'm glad you're able to get on with things and start something new. I buy most of my used gear of ebay, mainly for the buyer protection side of things.
Mark, I've enjoyed viewing your videos as I'm a recent purchaser of the M50 Mark ii. An avid hiker using a full size DSLR I've finally decided I want a much lighter camera to carry around on the trails. I've appreciated your video on the best 10 and how to not damage and have purchased several of your recommendations. With that being said, I've just discovered that the premium NV filter you recommended does not allow the recommended lens hood to fit (filter will not fit over filter so it can be screwed on). You might want to mention that to your viewers.
Thanks, this is the hood and filter I am using, but I did have another viewer report the same issue, so maybe be something has changed or amazon has automatically sent you to another filter. The last viewer did report that they eventually got it to work. Make sure you are putting the lens hood on the right way. The biggest pedals go top and bottom.
I dropped the camera while doing street work. Thank goodness I had the lens hood attached! Though when depressing the snap button the image makes weird movement when fully depressed.
Just bought my screen protector from Amazon . Great tips ! I just bought my M 50 the other day and am exploring it’s features and settings. Your channel is helping me a lot. Didn’t watch everything yet but will at my own pace . Thanks a lot !
Hi Mark! When I watch your videos I use automatic subtitle translation, because I don't understand English very well. Unfortunately, in this video the only language of the automatic subtitles is Dutch for some reason. This is what TH-cam seems to think and now it tries to translate from English as if it were Dutch. It has become very difficult to understand anything. Please check the subtitle settings of this video to turn the subtitles into English. I will be very grateful to you.
About the batteries. Your link goes to 1100mAH batteries while Canon's and most 3rd party ones are in the 800 to 875mAH range. I would think that these high capacity batteries might be more prone to have some problem than the normal ones.
Yeah, I'm not sure actually, these are the ones I use, and have not had any issue yet. I think even the canon batteries can fail, it's really about keeping an eye on them, and removing them from use if the show any signs of trouble.
I use two cameras when I go out for shooting. One has a 18-135 lens and the other a 10-20 wide angle. I lost two cameras over the years through changing lenses in foul weather, be very careful of salt water and sand., also high humidity and high temperatures. Guess you could jump into your car in bad weather and carefully change lenses. This is especially important with mirrorless cameras since you take the lens off and you can see the sensor - right there. Also, make sure your camera bag is really waterproof, since dumb things can happen. As was under a board walk taking pictures of the tide coming in and splashing against the pilings. As I was waiting for the water to come up further and looking through a tripod, I noticed my camera bag floating out to sea. Caught up with the bag floating in waist deep water. The bag did not allow a drop of water inside. Nice....
My brand new M50 is on its way and i already had some of this stuff on order but you added some great information I didn't know, the tripod info is key. One of the things i ordered was the silicone cover, think ill send it back. thanks.
I don`t say using a screen protector is a bad tip, but one thing I always do is use the viewfinder as I take photos. Videos I take almost always inside doing interviews mounted on a tripod, so not many risks there. using the viewfinder demands also more creativity making photos.
Hi Mark. I am brand new to photography. Found your videos very helpful. I just bought the m50 mark ii kit that also has the ef-m 55-200mm lens. I watched your video recommending a hood and lens filter for the basic kit lens. Which lens filter do you recommend for the 55-200mm? Thanks
A couple of months ago, I set my M50 outside, recording video. I'd put it in the path a rabbit often takes around my house, hoping to catch some close-up footage. Well, I got involved in other things and forgot about it. All night. Through TWO thunderstorms. And I had not put any kind of protection on it. The next day I remembered and ran outside in a panic to retrieve it. I dried it off, careful to keep it level so as to not let any water that might have gotten in move to places inside that were still dry, removed the battery and SD card, and stowed it away in our attic where it gets quite hot. About 48 hours later, I started it up. Amazingly, it worked fine. And I've had no problems develop so far. I feel SUPER lucky! The next purchase I made was a weather protection bag, just in case I decide to get uncareful with it again.
Great video, Mark! I have a question for you... If I took a M42 to Canon EF adapter and attached that to a VILTROX EF-EOS M2 Speed Booster, would that damage my M50 or fry my speed booster?
Hi, I got premium filter and Lens Hood… but while filter On… I can’t fit Lens hood… And once I put my Lens Hood… I can’t reach inside for fitting filter Any idea or tip ? Or I have to send Hood back to Amazon!!!!
That is strange. I have not encountered that before. This must mean the filter is wider than normal, I would return that filter and get a different one.
@@markwiemels thanks for reply. Yes - when filter is on - hood will not go straight in…. But with little push and alignment- finally I managed to put both ON… Thanks for review and these products are helpful
Mark been thinking all morning about fungus LOL Do you think you could put your gear in a sealed container with those dry packs like they use in seaweed packages to keep them crispy? Dehumidifier? ???
Yes, people do the plastic tub with dry packets in it. Not sure if it works or not, but seems logical. There are dedicated made lens cabinets that are dehumidified.
@@markwiemels I bought a dehumidifier today : ) and dry packs LOL I am in Bellingham WA the humidity is insane here. I'm glad you posted that video I think that would have slipped my attention. Sad way for equipment to go cant think of a worse ending.
@@Shawn-nd6ew I have been thinking about going the same route. Did you buy a dehumidified lens cabinet? Or are you talking about a room dehumidifier? Remember to throw some of those dry packets in your camera bag as well.
@@markwiemels I got a room dehumidifier and the dry pack to put in with the camera , my daughter is allergic to dust mites so we used to keep one in her room for this reason they hate it. I figure dual purpose the cabinet will come I assure you LOL. I think I have to buy a plastic container now as well to put the gear in.
It’s a good question, I don’t think it’s a real issue for the most part. I wouldn’t let it sit open for long periods, but you can change the lens in the daylight and it’s not an issue. I alway try to point the sensor away from the direct sunlight, just to be safe, but I’m not really sure if it matters to be honest.
I bought the screen protector you recommended for the mark2 in an other video and it ended up not fitting. The Display couldnt be fully closed anymore and I ended up returning it. Was that not an issue for you?
The screen closes, but will not fully "click-in" this is normal and doesn't cause any issues. You can leave it screen side out and turn off the screen, if only using the EVF and you don't to see the screen.
Changing efm or efm size lenses is the only time i use the neck strap, i have quick relese on the strap so its easy to put on (usually use a wrist strap) with the camera around my neck i hold the in-coming lens in my left hand and press the lens release with the same hand, remove the lens with the right hand and the new lens is put straight on, minimum sensor exposure time. with the bigger ef lenses i usually have the hood up in the open position so the lens can sit face down on it, then i put the camera onto the lens facing down. when you use a plastic or silicone waterproof bag to cover the M50 from rain can you end up with condensation inside the camera?
Great video Mark, just a quick question, I bought the screen protector but when I tuck in the screen it seems to wobble a bit on one end and not close fully... did you experience that as well? Lastly what are your honest thoughts about the EF-M mount seeing that Canon isn't pushing any new lenses out and is instead focused on the RF lineup?
Yes, if I put the screen facing in, it does not do the hard lock in place, but it doesn't swing open either. I have always left the screen facing out, and just turn off the screen in the settings, if I don't want it coming on. I did a video called, is the EF-M mount dead, check that out.
Another little keep moisture away/prevent fungus trick: Those silica packets you get with shoes, new products etc, save them an throw a couple in your camera bag to keep your bag where you keep your lenses dry.
One question regarding the screen protector. Should I go with a glass one, but from what I've read, I can no longer close the screen (flip it back with the screen inside), as it's too thick, or go with a plastic one, which offers less protection, but I can still flip back the screen? Thanks!
The one I have suggested allows the screen to close, and it stays closed, but doesn't do the hard click, as it does without the protector. I personally would only close it to protect the screen anyways. If you want to only use the viewfinder, and not have the screen active, you can turn the screen off in the menu system as well.
@@markwiemels Thanks! For some reasons, the links won't work. I'm not sure if that's only for me. Maybe you should re-check, hopefully it works for the rest :)
Can you tell me if upgrading to the m50 would be worth it if I own a m100? They have the same sensor so I feel like I would be getting the same images I do now. So I guess the question is are the features worth it?
I would stick with the M100 and invest in another lens. The M100 is a good camera and image quality is identical, adding a lens will make a much bigger difference.
I just unboxed my Canon M50 Mark ii and noticed it makes a clicking/rattling noise when tilting back and forwards. Is this normal? I found a few posts of others reporting this but no definite answer on whether this is something to worry about or not!! Thank you 🙏
@@markwiemels thanks so much Mark 🙏 that is such a relief to know it's nothing to worry about! Love your videos 😊 greetings and thanks from Scotland 🏴
I was recently doing a short film, where one of the actors accidentally kicked my camera's lens. Could have been disaster, if not for the LENS FILTER. Thank you for great tips!
What camera you are filming at? Definitely not at M50. We somehow cant figure out how to remove foggy effect from M50 in 1080p videos. Even with good photo light. Any ideas? We have kit lens, clean, no fungus. If you wish you can check last video in Kriksis channel.
I'm using the M6 Mark II. I had a look at your video, it's hard to say. 1080p isn't that detailed to begin with. It could be your lens, your footage looked very soft, hard for me to diagnosis without being there.
I like my neck strap, sometimes I can use it as a third point of contact when I'm having issues holding the camera steady. I learned the trick from guns, some guns don't have a stock so you can use tension in the shoulder strap to help hold it steady, just basically do the same thing with the camera. Put both hands on the camera however you're going to hold it, then hold it out so it pulls at the neck strap to help keep it steady.
I have had no safety issues with third party batteries but they do run out faster. I have ran had at lest four third party batteries lose their capacity whereas none of the original despite there being as many originals. Still the lat years so that is not a major issue. Canon batteries last ages, I still have the one I got 2014 with my EOS M. One reason I bought M50 was that it used the same battery. I only use third party batteries as an emergency. Once I am back I charge both and then put the original back in the camera. It is good to carry lens cleaning wipes with you if you need to clean the lenses. You can also clean your glasses with them. I grab the other lens before I take the old off. Once I take the old one with my left hand I immediately put the new one in with my right one. I have got dust less than once in a year despite changing. I have changed lenses 2700 times and gotten dust 4-5 times.
There are messages that one cannot close the screen fully after fitting the protector. One wants to be able to close the screen as normal. I got me an ExpertShield screen protector. I think the trick is to fit it with as much clearance as possible on the hinge side because that is where the clearances will be the smallest. Any non-flush closing at the hinge will then be more pronounced at the other side of the screen. In the end I ignored the overly complicated fitting instructions (making a hinge with tape) and just fitted it carefully. Aligned it well, pressed down gently and watched with amazement how the rest just 'sucked' against the screen. Works perfect, screen closes too.
Here is the easier way and cheaper way for the screen protector! Go to phone repair or phone accessories store , buy a ipad film protector, the film one the standard one , bring it home and cut to size of the m50 screen then apply it ! I ve been doing this for all of my camera screen or even psp screen and it works 100%
God, I just freakin dumped half a Nalgene bottle of water in my cooler with the M50 on the bottom! I drowned the damn thing! The bottles cap wasn't completely closed! But it was only under for a couple of minutes! Is it possible to dry it out such as an Apple iphone in a bag of rice? Any help will be appreciated, I currently have it in a bowl of rice! Maybe it will turn on some day..
I would set the camera, battery door open, card and battery removed, and run a gentle fan across it for a few days. Then don’t try to turn it back on for a week to 10 days, the longer the better.

Great video, Mark! I have a question for you... If I took a M42 to Canon EF adapter and attached that to a VILTROX EF-EOS M2 Speed Booster, would that damage my M50 or fry my speed booster?
I have done this, it works fine.
@@markwiemels Awesome! Thank you
Hi,
I got premium filter and Lens Hood… but while filter On… I can’t fit Lens hood…
And once I put my Lens Hood… I can’t reach inside for fitting filter
Any idea or tip ? Or I have to send Hood back to Amazon!!!!
That is strange. I have not encountered that before. This must mean the filter is wider than normal, I would return that filter and get a different one.
@@markwiemels thanks for reply.
Yes - when filter is on - hood will not go straight in…. But with little push and alignment- finally I managed to put both ON…
Thanks for review and these products are helpful
Mark been thinking all morning about fungus LOL Do you think you could put your gear in a sealed container with those dry packs like they use in seaweed packages
to keep them crispy?
@@markwiemels I got a room dehumidifier and the dry pack to put in with the camera , my daughter is allergic to dust mites so we used to keep one in her
room for this reason they hate it. I figure dual purpose the cabinet will come I assure you LOL. I think I have to buy a plastic container now as well to put the gear in.
Is exposing the sensor of the camera in direct sunlight bad?
Nice one! Every advise is really worthy thank you so much 🙏🏽
You are most welcome!
do you have a video for best camera bag where I can fit my other lense?
Sorry I don’t, the one I was recommending seems to have been disconnected, so I’m looking for a new one to recommend.
Changing efm or efm size lenses is the only time i use the neck strap, i have quick relese on the strap so its easy to put on (usually use a wrist strap)
with the camera around my neck i hold the in-coming lens in my left hand and press the lens release with the same hand, remove the lens with the right hand and the new lens is put straight on, minimum sensor exposure time.
with the bigger ef lenses i usually have the hood up in the open position so the lens can sit face down on it, then i put the camera onto the lens facing down.
when you use a plastic or silicone waterproof bag to cover the M50 from rain can you end up with condensation inside the camera?
That's what I do too, when changing lenses. Yes, I suppose that could happen with a waterproof bag, I have not use one.
Great video Mark, just a quick question, I bought the screen protector but when I tuck in the screen it seems to wobble a bit on one end and not close fully... did you experience that as well?
Lastly what are your honest thoughts about the EF-M mount seeing that Canon isn't pushing any new lenses out and is instead focused on the RF lineup?
same thing for me. I try not to close it too hard, I just let it semi-open. The screen protector might be too thick.
Yes, if I put the screen facing in, it does not do the hard lock in place, but it doesn't swing open either. I have always left the screen facing out, and just turn off the screen in the settings, if I don't want it coming on.
I did a video called, is the EF-M mount dead, check that out.
Same here
I have just posted a message to another poster about my experience with fitting the protector. I was worried about that too.
@@markwiemels one can close it but watching carefully I saw that the screen bends. What to watch out for is in my other post.
Another little keep moisture away/prevent fungus trick: Those silica packets you get with shoes, new products etc, save them an throw a couple in your camera bag to keep your bag where you keep your lenses dry.
Literally just bought a screen protector lol
Thanks Mark
outstanding video!! Thank you for all these fantastic ideas for protection!
You are most welcome.
Thank you so much for this video, I didn't even know these accessories exist!
I'm so glad it was helpful! Thanks.
@@ionut-cristianratoi7692 just found out, server is down, maybe try again a bit later.
Good stuff there, thanks, Have you chosen a cage for the m6 m2 yet ???
Yes I have, will try to do a video. I got the small rig, very happy with it.
great tips will be looking after my M50 what a great cam so far :)
Great to hear.
@@markwiemels thanks
Am I suppose to get the 46mm lens uv filter for the 45mm lens?
Yea, it’s the filter thread on the front of the lens, not the focal length.
@@markwiemels okay. It’s not really tightening on my lens so I had doubts. I’ll give it another try
Does the lens say 46mm filter?
It should say on the lens, the filter thread size.
@@markwiemels yes it does
Can I use a canon charger for 3rd party baterries?
I’m not actually sure off the top or my head, I should know, and at one point I’m sure I did know, but I can’t remember.
Thank you
Hi have you tried the Canon efs 17-55 f2.8 on the M50 if you have what’s the autofocus like is it loud like the Sigma thanks
No experience with it, Sigma make a lot of lenses, the modern ones don't have loud autofocus that I have noticed.
when I turn on my m50 and unlock, the unlock prompt does not go away and I cannot take a picture. I'm not aware of any damage occurring...any ideas?
Have not run into that, try posting the question on one of the M50 Facebook groups.
I just unboxed my Canon M50 Mark ii and noticed it makes a clicking/rattling noise when tilting back and forwards. Is this normal? I found a few posts of others reporting this but no definite answer on whether this is something to worry about or not!! Thank you 🙏
Yes, mine does this. It's a very slight click, this is normal.
I have had a similar experience, except it was my kids not an actor.
I have the smallrig cage for my canon m50 and I love it.
Yah, it's so good.
Good tip!
Thank you for this very helpful video.
Glad it was helpful!
I have lens hoods for all of my lenses that I use. I need to get one for my nifty fifty though.
Yah, they make one, it's kinda funny and huge, but works well.
do you recommend a remote?
Don't have any experience with them, I have used the free phone app, which works well.
I don't have an M50 but I thought it was sound advice for anyone with anyone with an interchangeable lense camera
Thanks!
How can I properly clean my Canon M50 censor without damaging it?
I have a sensor cleaning video on the channel.
Which one good canon m50 or canon 250d?
Both are good, I prefer the M50.
You have to do a vid on how to install screen protector or how to replace a screw up install : )
No, but thats a good idea.
The screen protectors are hardened glass, so more protective, made to the size of the screen, they come in packs of 3 for under $10.
Several new items were just added to my Wish List. Camera ownership is death by 1000 cuts.
haha... so true!
Thanks Mark, I appreciate that very much! I let ya know how it worked out!@@markwiemels
I am still getting used to using this camera...thanks very much for the video! New sub!

So grateful for this video‼️ My son recently got this camera and I want him to enjoy but I also need him to protect his investment. Thanks for all the information. 💯
This is a fantastic video. I just bought it and I wanted to be very careful with it.
Great to hear!
I have one. It just never caught on. But my best museum shooter
ive been making music for a while so i have a lot of equipment. i take great care of my shit but the thing is the equipment for music that i use doesnt ever really leave the studio so i didnt think that i needed to see this vid since my track record for busting up equipment is flawless for 3 decades. but of course me being that type of person and i just got this 600 dollar canon....i had to see what was up. so glad i did. so many vulnerable parts of the camera that i didnt know how such affordable ways to protect. i expected advice on handling not that AND great products. oh and SUBBED!!!
Great to hear! Yes, that was the goal of the video, by comparison, audio equipment is more robust for sure.
💪🏾💪🏾 Thanks brother, you're very awesome, great tips!!!
I appreciate that!
Very helpful tips. Thanks
Thanks.
Well I recently got m50 mark II. Will certainly use your advice. That being said I am really careful with my electronics. Never broken anything. So far. I may have jinxed it now
😱
Great to hear!
my m50just gave up today and I barely used it....
Sorry to hear that.
LOL 0:20 A screen protector will not protect against this type of damage, I think.
Absolutely can, but not always.
I think the 3rd party battery link is broken (at least for me 😅)
What country are you in? It seems to vary based on country.

I got a screen protector on your recommendation.
Smart move for sure, I have them on all of my cameras.
how is this vid not in your m50 playlist?
Thanks for the suggestion, I have just added it!
I dropped my camera and the screen does not work anymore
Bummer! Sorry to hear that.
Mark, do you mind making a video showing how you covered your camera with a clear plastic bag to use when you're out in rainy weather? I really like that idea of covering the entire camera with a plastic bag but would like to see how you wrap your M50 Mark II. Thanks a lot. 👍🏽🤠 7/11/22

@@markwiemels I am arranging my own space and that's why I was looking in details. I don't think the majority would notice anyway.
if there's a hissing and cracking noise, you better throw that thing out of the window, its not fun to have a lithium polymer battery bursting into flames. trust me, i have some experience
