Same here but I did miss a longer focal length lense on my trip to Japan. 16 mm is too wide for many situations, everything is so "far away". In street photography, it's often useful to get the background "closer".
Yes, I wen't over all these factors in the video. IQ is not a 1 for 1, and in some cases the ultra-budget lenses out performed the Sigma. Ultimately, you can't go wrong with the Sigma lens, that's for sure.
@@markwiemels You only buy the lens once, so it's better to pay extra and have f/1.4 with fast AF than to save a little. If someone wants Viltrox, the 27 and 75mm f/1.2 are phenomenal, worth every penny. Viltrox should expand their portfolio with f/1.2 lenses instead of wasting time on some f/1.8 especially since Sigma offers f/1.4. Viltrox should work on e.g. 56mm f/1.2. If someone has cameras like Sony A6100, A6300, A6400, A6500, A6600, A6700, they will not waste money on worse lenses because Sigma is not expensive.
@ your logic is reasonable, but everyone has different budgets and requirements. There is a big difference between $125 for the TT and $300 for the Sigma, for many people this is very important. The better distortion correction, of the cheaper lenses, is another big one for some Fuji shooters. In real most world results you will struggle to tell them all apart. I don’t think you can go wrong with any of them, it’s just great that we have so many options now.
For me, it wasn't Sigma but Tamron who lost the cheaper 3rd party lens buy... I needed a wider angle lens with good aperture and ended up buying a Viltrox 20mm f/2.8 instead of the Tamron 20mm f/2.8... Barrel distortion and chromatic aberration is the biggest turn off for me but the price was the deciding factor...
I am a Tamron zoom owner. I bought the Tamron 35mm f2.8 just to have a light lens for walk around and also its 1:2 macro capability. I sent the lens back after trying it for 5 minutes. The focus was horrible. It refused to lock focus most of the time. I have never experienced anything like it from any manufacturer, let alone Tamron. My Tamrons zooms are fantastic. Someone on FredMirandsa was selling a Viltorx 20mm f2.8 for $100 so I decided to get it just for fun. I am beyond impressed with that lens. Focus is fast and sure footed. And the image quality is in the pro category, even wide open. Tamron wants $250 for the same lens and based on my bad experience with the 35mm f2.8 Tamron, I would not consider the Tamron 20mm.
@@boristahmasian1644 I use a Tamron 35mm f2.8 and i kept it because i got it relatively cheap, the AF is really not good, but atleast the image quality is quite decent
I have purchased several TTArtisans lenses based on Mark's reviews and have been thrilled (even shocked) with all of them. And my experience with fine lenses, before going mirrorless APS-C, has been with Canon L-Series glass on a 5D. I can't imagine buying a Sigma lens given the price differential and the TTA quality.
The Chinese lenses are a good value, but they usually don't do well in direct sunlight, lack weather sealing. What’s hurting Sigma is that they are not sending out free lenses like the Chinese companies do, 😂.
I bought the TTartisans 56 after seeing your review, and I really like it. But I do notice that I miss shots because the autofocus is a bit slow. Autofocus performance has now moved up my list of priorities, on par with optical performance, weight, and cost.

Hmmm. The title should make clear that this comparison is of *APS-C lenses" only! Because the image circle is so much larger, the challenge of sharpness across the field is much greater, so that is where the maturity of these Chinese manufacturers would be more clearly tested. -- gary ray
@@AWAShowme The difference is huge, actually. The APS-C circle is 27.3 mm compared to 43.3 mm for full frame. So, yeah, one cannot extrapolate anything from APS-C results for FF lenses. -- gary ray
Actually I am trying right now to decided between the Sigma 30mm f1.4 and the Viltrox 35mm f1.7. Right now I have the XC35mm f2 for Fujifilm. As I am struggling often with 35mm being to tight for me I tend towards the 30mm Sigma. The 1.4 is also a plus for the Sigma. 30mm to 35mm is actually already a pretty significant difference. But hard decision. I have the Viltrox 56mm f1.7 and like it a lot.
I recently got the Viltrox 23mm f/1.4 AF for x-mount, and I love it. I'm really impressed. I've had many sigmas over the years. They are solid and work great. My only complaint about them has been their excessively clinical look. But with these excellent and even cheaper Viltrox lenses, they're my new go to. In fact, I just ordered the 56mm. Can't wait to get it
I have a Viltrox 20mm f2.8 and the TT Artisan 56mm f1.8 and super happy with both. The 56 f1.8 is matching Sigma 85 f1.4 primes quality costing 8x more! I had both and tested them side-by--side. Yes one is APSc and the other is FF and faster. When I look at images on my computer, I cannot tell them apart!!
You could also make a similar video on not buying canon apsc since your locked into the more expensive 3rd party lenses. Love to see the viltrox on RF apsc. These other lens options make Sony, Nikon more reasonable offers.
Excellent detail and wonderful information, and I watched all the way to the end. What's funny is, to me, you ended by saying, "You get what you pay for." Kind of. But also like you REALLY said, they're all close. I own lenses from all three and like them all pretty similarly in real world application. Really fun to watch. Hope Christmas went well for you, Mark. :)
I recently ordered a ttartisan 35mm f1.8 mark II. I don't have the version 1 but they improved some of its flaws, like minimum focused distance, improved auto focus, pretty cheap, $125

Sigma started moving upmarket with their Art series, well before Viltrox and the Artisans showed up. They can't be toast if they are no longer in the targeted space by the time the heat arrives. This makes sense given the current dynamics of the camera market, where the general trend is towards low-volume high-margin products.
BTW, I like your titles. They tell the truth and as we all know, truth sometimes hurts! If the Viltrox 35 is anything like the Viltrox 20 f2.8 I own, Sigma is indeed in trouble. 90-95% percent of the performance at 1/3 the cost... why not save some money without much compromise..

Exif data and autofocus gone, why, well all cameras are from Japanese manufacturers and china and Japan ain’t exactly on the best terms. So if it one day comes to safe a Japanese company, I’ll bet that can happen real fast. We will see. In the mean time I found it refreshing your such a great ambassador for cheap Chinese labor. I don't think this is a real concern, other than with Canon, who has been actively blocking companies from making RF lenses. Most Japanese companies have factories in Japan and China.

I just got a 7artisans 35 and that was of good quality, so if you don't mind mf you can do good in this category.
you are holding a microphone in your hand. Why. You don't need to imitate influencers Mark, we watch you because you know what you're talking about.
I'm traveling, and this was the best option to get good audio, with the gear that I have on hand. I'm not trying to follow trends, but I also won't avoid holding the mic if it's the best I can do in a given situation.
I know this is petty, but: TTArtisan (singular), not TTArtisans.
You’re very good! Your channel is definitely among the best on TH-cam related to photography gear. Your content and execution are of such high quality that even small errors with a company’s name, however, stand out.
Keep up the good work, but, please note: 7 Artisans, TTArtisan.
I know, I keep doing it, it annoys me too.
@ Thanks, and please do forgive my OCD. Do know that your videos are among a very select few that I view immediately (or as soon as possible) when I find something new. I value your opinions and perspective.
Sigma and tamron lenses have no soul.
0 pop and way too sharp.
I kinda get that, but I think this varies between lenses. I have the Tamron 35-150 and have been very impressed with the "vibe" of that lens.
Well. The beauty about those cheap Chinese lenses are. That one day you wake up and after a new firmware update to the camera they won’t work. Irony may occur
I don't think this is a real concern, other than with Canon, who has been actively blocking companies from making RF lenses. Most Japanese companies have factories in Japan and China.
@@markwiemelsthat ain’t the question. Sigma has paied for licenses to make lenses, also coming on canon ref now. Chinese company’s, hardly. And if it comes to the point where sigma is seriously threatened it will go like that.
