      Yes, plus people who like you tend to give complements on things that physically stand out about you; long hair will do that for you, for example, but the thing being complemented is often less important than the fact that the person is really saying "I like you".
      People are often looking for a way to say something that encourages you to be around them, and while they might genuinely like the feature they point out, complements are more about human connection and being seen than they are about what you're being seen for

      @@kenshin1368 If you take it when you're younger it CAN potentially re-grow some hair, but what it DOES do is the hairs that are thinning but havent fallen out yet it will thicken those back up and it will stop you losing any more hair, so all in all after like 6 months or so of taking it your hair will look a bit thicker again. I don't know if this guy is reading these comments, but I just want you to know I was EXACTLY like you. I had long beautiful jetblack italian boy wavy hair and at 17 it started to thin.
    I was in school and some kid poked my bald spot mockingly and said "wow you're 17 and balding". My heart sank. I went home and looked in the mirror and I noticed it was actually thinning. My identity was so closely tied to my hair, and I felt so powerless that all I could do is weep. I'd get anxiety attacks while styling my hair and I'd have to make sure my scalp wasn't showing every morning.
    Then at 19, 2 years later, i was just exhausted hiding my baldness. I decided I had enough. I made the step to buzz it down. I felt so relieved that I didn't have to worry about it anymore. Yes, the people I knew were shocked at first but then they get over it after like 10 minutes. I was still the same me that my friends and family loved with or without hair.

  • @regirockplays
    @regirockplays 2 ปีที่แล้ว +44

    A few thing:
    1) here’s my advice, well more like a personal prospective: I was in the same exact situation, long hair, many people complimented me over it, even the period from when I started to griw my hair to when I cut them is Identical. I saw it thinning and basically saw it as an opportunity to reinvent myself, I could wait till my hair falls all out or I could say that I enjoyed it while it lasted but it was time to move to other styles (I could experiment, I could have haircuts that are excusive to short hair, I could have a mohawk like the one Trevis has in Taxi driver, I could make my hair look like that one “blue sky with clouds” jacket that Prince wore in the Raspberry berret music video), I had fun with with long hair (you know, I had some parts dyed, I don’t like dreadlocks but those were an option, braids, many different bun styles) and now it was time to have fun with short hair since I dried up all the possible long-hair-do’s, basically enjoy it while you have them cause (as you should know, just look at older people in books of just around you) they won’t stay there forever
    2) Don’t stress over it, stress makes the situation worse for you (not just hair, in general), take it easy
    3) Maybe it’s a coping mechanism but since I cut my hair I live way better, it’s no secret that shorter hair is easier to upkeep, doesn’t cause such a heat on your head, it’s less cumbersome, doesn’t require much electricity to dry, it’s just easier at the cost of maybe not looking as good, but from a pragmatic stand point, short hair is amazing

    I was having a very similar experience to the guy in the video, down to our ages, interests, and panic at feeling like my hair was the main component for my social growth. Only recently however did I realize that no matter how many ways I try to brush it or hide it the reality is my hair was just getting thinner and while no one else paid attention to it, the feeling of losing my hair made me feel powerless and desperate. I mainly attribute this to the fear of not being in control of yourself and having that agency stripped from you. But it was only once I accepted that my hair didn’t define me or invalidate my experiences that I decided to just get rid of it. While time may pass and my hair may never grow back the same it doesn’t change your value as a person or make you ugly. It’s just the reality of life that some things will always fall outside of our control, and that’s ok. It’s only once we embrace that truth that we gain the freedom to let go and the ability to change. The next day after I realized this I said “fuck it” and shaved my head into a Mohawk. Now I don’t even think about it. Thank you melon.

    I care a lot about my sense of style and my haircut is a huge part of it. I've been getting more and more thin at the bald spot area of my head for a few years and it's been making it hard to make a fade look good. I'm having to keep my hair longer than I'd like to and eventually I'll have to cut it all off, probably within a few years.
    Anthony still manages to pull off a great sense of style with no hair and it's helping me come to accept that reality. I just hope my head is shaped right lol

    I've been a confident bald man since 2019, and I can say I wouldn't grow my hair back. Hair was a source of insecurity for me. I was always touching it, trying to make it look right, during the last years I was trying to hide my bald spot. But being bald takes all that burden off. Also, it kind of made me more attractive because of my confidence boost I believe. And most important of all, it's confortable AF. For every person ashamed of getting bald, don't be afraid, it's amazing once you go through with it. All or nothing, no middle ground.

      Yeah I shaved mine off in 2019 too, went from long to really short, long and so forth throughout school and started noticing it was going thin, decided to try it out and it looks way better now than it did with hair, although I grew a beard to offset it for me personally.

    This was a very touching video and as someone who’s going through the exact same thing, I felt every word in that post. It’s not an easy experience but learning to adjust, or make the preparations for treatments is part of the process. Whatever route you go in “fixing yourself” is up to you but don’t build your identity on external factors.

    Yo. As someone who was diagnosed with hair loss at 19, finasteride really helps. I was scared of side effects and avoided it for two years. It was a slow crawl and I definitely lost some ground (in my hairline). Now, at 23, after two years of finasteride the hair looks pretty similar to how it does in high school.
    If you care about your hair start finasteride ASAP. I had no side effects. It really works wonders, but mostly just stops hair loss rather than regrows.
    Anthony had an incredibly compassionate response. Hair loss really is such a self-esteem killer and makes me very sympathetic to what women have gone through for years (extreme unfair appearance-based scrutiny). No one should be body shamed!

    • @l4ssc
      @l4ssc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      yep. funnily enough, finasteride is also used as a medication for trans women as a hormone blocker -- male-pattern baldness itself comes from excess production of testosterone

      @UCQho5ZEwj_45GzEyM3YxrLA As someone who has seen a lot of hairless in the shower and any time I run my hands through it, I should have taken finasteride a few years sooner. However that relies on the point in time that you become aware of the difference and how long you decide if its normal for your age to complain to a doctor or parent. Bc when you think about it if I already knew at 18 things were progressing why not keep what I have by taking fin from the very start and look quite normal instead of holding on to the hair you would have left if I waiting till 24 or something. I'm taking it now at 21 and you'd never notice the way I style it but I have yet to see the very obvious thinning go away. I guarantee most people with my current hair wouldn't even bat an eye till a few more years. Luckily I have been hyper aware of everything going on with my body even when I thought I was too young to experience X problem.

I feel as if I don't hid behind my hair and can actually be even more social and I feel more confident because my hair isn't a part of who I am. I'm the same guy. This was even more encouraging and i’m excited for this next chapter in my life, and as you said, it’s just hair at the end of the day.
    Thank you!

    I totally get this. I’m not losing my hair yet but I am quite often paranoid about it, and there are times when I become completely convinced that I’ve found a change in my hairline or a bald spot and proceed to several hours of moping and crying.
    However, I always come back to the conclusion that my hair doesn’t actually matter. Everyone who I want in my life will still be there once my hair is gone. There are plenty of people I admire who have lost their hair, so there is no reason to believe I’ll become worthless when I lose mine. It really does feel like a the end of me sometimes, but it’s just a matter of letting go of that delusion and holding onto reality: nothing I have accomplished was ever a result of my hair alone.

    that is spot on about having a nice headshape for a bald head. started losing mine in my early 20s, and i'm 38 now; my lumpy ass head could not pull it off so i fought to save it. nizoral shampoo soak every shower, propecia for a few years until it started causing unwanted side effects downstairs, minoxidil every night on the scalp and recently switched to the minoxidil+finasteride topical shit. i never had a great head of hair to begin with but i seem to have been able to hold off any additional loss since

    I can attest to this. I started getting a bald spot in high school when I had long hair. I kept it through college, but would get so self conscious about how people would think of a 20 year old who's already balding. I fully shaved my head after graduating college and I honestly feel way more confident this way. I miss having hair, but it's nice to not worry about it. Plus I save so much money by not having to go to a barber.

    Very similar situation here as well. I cut off my 30 inches of hair a few weeks ago and donated it. Even though I felt like I lost a part of myself, I took comfort in the fact that hanging on and fuckin around with minoxidil would only cause more stress, and that all the change I felt my hair brought to my life is still a part of me that can never be seperated.

    Damn, I wish I'd seen this post, I could've helped this dude out. Growing up, I always knew the day was gonna come when I'd have to go bald. I had uncles on both sides of the family who just couldn't accept that their time with hair was long since over and we all pitied them, I never wanted to be that way. I had a rule in place: when my hairline got too bad, I'd shave it, no regrets.
    In March of 2020, my dad asked me to send him a selfie because he hadn't seen me in a while. So, I took a selfie and noticed my hair looked like it was painted on. That was it, it took two months to come to terms with but I eventually did.

    This hit close to home as I started balding pretty rapidly when I was around the age of 23 and one thing I gotta say is that the earlier you own the baldness the better. Really the only time when it damaged my confidence was when I was trying to hold on to the remaining hair I had, even though it looked bad, I was always self conscious about whether or not people notice the products I used, I was berating myself for spending way too much money on it, just a nightmare. Once I shaved my head and adopted the new "bald" persona, everything changed for the better. And girls fucking love it too. It is what it is, and people really don't care, if you own it and rock it, you can make it work the same way for you like growing hair in the first place did. Good luck man.

    As a guy in his mid 20s with very long hair, I would absolutely be crushed if I started to notice serious receding or thinning.
    I know it’s vanity but it’s such a big part of who I am (that is, how I perceive myself) that I cannot imagine myself without it. Just like this person describes, I take great care of it, spend just as long if not longer than a lot of women on it. I love the way it blows in the wind. Yeah I like how people generally positively react to it, but my main motive is for myself. People like me for plenty of other reasons, but I would personally not like the way I looked or felt regardless of outside influences.
    So yeah I’d be the same dude but I’d always feel like something was missing. I don’t know, call me dramatic, but it is what it is.

    • @billhicks8
      @billhicks8 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      it is almost for this very reason though that you should challenge yourself to cut it one day (you can obvs grow it back in your case), as it is probably skewering your relation to yourself slightly where you're displacing aspects of your self appreciation into what is essentially a mere design aspect.

      @@billhicks8 Lol nah I look dumb with short hair, which is why I grew it out in the first place. My head shape and face shape/features are much more suitable for long hair. I genuinely believe I lose a lot of attractiveness with short hair, so why would I do that to myself, I literally just have to look at old pictures of me as a teen to know it’d be an awful decision. Would also totally wreck any fashion I had going because it tends to be more feminine than most dudes would be comfortable with.
      I think these ideas are ones that aren’t considered when people just say “Deal with it, it’ll be ok” like no it would alter a lot honestly in a lot of different ways. Those are just two examples. And why does everyone downplay a man’s hair loss but if a woman is losing her hair that’s treated much differently. Like why just because I’m a man does it make it any less awful? I guess because it’s more socially acceptable for men to be bald/balding, but fuck that bro I want my hair lmao
