Ardbeg Corryvreckan Peated Single Malt Scotch

- With the first sniff, encounter the deep and turbulent force of Corryvreckan as it pulls you inwards. Swirl the glass and dip your nose into the torrents of tarry ropes, creosote and linseed oil rising from deep within the vortex. As you succumb to its power, a collision of waxy dark chocolate, warm blackcurrants and muscovado sugar pulls you under its spell with a burst of plump cherries and earthy pine needles leaping from its depths.
Swirl water into the glass, and observe the magical collision of whisky and water. As the liquid warms up, the seething cauldron bubbles and bursts, as you edge closer to sniff a pot full of gutsy cayenne-peppered steak and oysters smothered in hot pepper sauce. Salty seasoning brings a briny character with tangy crisp seaweed and smoky bacon swirling on the surface with hints of sweet vanilla, spicy cloves and blueberries.
As the whirlpool narrows and quickens moving ever deeper, surrender to its dangerous depths with the heady force of menthol, treacle and chilli sauce.
Taste
Plunge into the whirlpool and taste the mysterious depths of Corryvreckan. Torrents of taste well up on the palate; deep, peppery and chewy, bombarding the tongue with its intense tastes and textures.
The first plunge brings forth chewy peppered steak soaked in pepper sauce with the tang of crispy seaweed. As you descend deeper, encounter a mouthful of black tarry espresso coffee that coats the palate with rich melted dark fruits (blackcurrants, blueberries and cherries) and bitter almonds. As the taste soaks in deeper, star anise and hickory dry out the palate before a surprise of chalky effervescent violets fizz to the surface.
Finish

Just bought this as my Birthday Bottle. First taste was all ash-tray. Came back to it the next day and wow. Smoky, fruit-cake, some smoked meats on the nose. Less medicinal than a Talisker or Lagavulin. Just a notch below Lagavulin 16 for me, but very good.

I also got sherry cask on the palate, although mostly salt, sea weed, and butter. Not as smoky as the 10, but you do know its an ardbeg. A very good pour, anxious to see how it opens up over time.

I'm drinking Highland Park 12 as I watch this. I gotta tell you, at first I wasn't crazy about peated Scotches but now I'm really starting to dig them a lot.

I love the look on Scott's face when Bart pours a millilitre of scotch into his glass. He's thinking I'll sniff all that up in one go and then he goes and gives himself a decent shot. Great review guys. I just bough a Corryvreckan and thought I would check out the reviews. Yours are great. Bart looks like he's reviewed five or six scotches prior to this video. Great job.

I bought the box available at Christmas that had the Ardbeg 10 at regular price plus the samples of Corryvreckan and Uigedail. I already had the Dark Cove so I did the same shoot-out as you guys with Dark Cove included. Loved them all and if I throw out pricing and just go by taste, my preference was Dark Cove > Corryvreckan > Uigedail > Ardbeg 10.

Here are some cask info about the corryvreckan:
Consists of predominantly French oak cask aged liquid combined with classic Ardbeg matured in ex-bourbon American oak casks. Inspired by Corryvreckan, Europe’s largest, and the world’s second largest whirlpool, situated between Islay and Jura.

Enjoyed the Uigeadail, the first dram was the best with sherry flavors. The rest of the bottle, I never had the same sherry flavor experience, more smoke and tar. My favorite peated dram is Connamara 12 year-old Irish Single Malt. Also enjoying Talisker 18 & Bowmore Darkest 15. Thanks for the video's, Merry Christmas!

Connamarra has a NAS standard version & cask strength, have not had them. The 12 year old is sweet and smoky, delicious!

I am still working up the courage to try Ardbeg. My fear is that it will not measure up to Laphroaig 10-year cask strength, my current favorite. I was also thrilled to hear you mention "Firefly." That is, without a doubt, in my top 5 shows of all time!!!

+Luis Wells ...I still harbor some hate for FOX and the cancelation of Firefly...it would have ran for 7 seasons. I think you will like the 10 year Ardbeg Luis. It has a different taste but still super peaty. A lot of peat heads prefer it. Bart

I enjoyed a bottle of the Corryvreckan about a year ago, just like I always enjoy the ten year old. The sweetness in there comes from some of the casks used in it that were sherry casks. It's very nicely balanced... I also tried Uigeadail, but I didn't like it. I thought it had too much sherry cask influence for my taste, which I feel doesn't work so well with the Ardbeg smoke...

I usually go with anything peated or the 12 year Macallan is always tasty and often stocked.

Started watching BB a few years ago but didn't really get what was all the fuzz about and stopped after a few episodes. I prefer something like Longmire; excellent with pleated whisky :) ... By the way, just noticed guys that you haven't reviewed Lagavulin 16 yet. Please, please, please taste it next before you try any other pleated whisky. This is really the king IMO. It has everything, the smoke, the sherry, the sweetness, and boy it it is smoooooooth. Not sure if I got a good sample or not, it is truly a smoked nectar.
Watched the video again as I am considering Corry as my next purchase. To you question about why this whisky is more expensive than the 10 is because a) it is cask strength, so we are getting much more whisky in a bottle, and b) they are using a mix of older whisky such as 15-20 yo and a younger one which makes is so much better than the 10. They don't put the age statement because it must be the age of the youngest whisky used in a mix. What I don't understand why they still call it a single malt whisky. Seems more like a blend to me.

+VoidedTea Single malt only means that it came from the same distillery. Many distilleries use whiskies of different ages with NAS or different casked scotches. We're planning on doing a review of the Uigy, Corry, and 10 all together to discuss the differences.
Hi guys another entertaining review. The COREY is a beast. Love it. My favorite Ardbeg (and I love them all) remains the Airigh Nam Beist. Impossible to find now unfortunately. By the way, after you finish "Breaking Bad" there is a spin off called "Better Call Saul" also written and produced by Vince Gilligan. The first season wrapped early this year and it is equal in greatness to BB. Can't wait for season two!!
