    Watching this episode was like watching a replay of my brother and I tasting Scarabus a couple weeks ago after grabbing a bottle on sale for $29.99 (reg. $34.99) at Total Wine. We compared it with Wee Beastie, Lagavulin 16, and Laphroaig 10. We were beyond impressed with the Islay experience it delivers at that price point. Super fun to watch you guys have that same reaction. Cheers!

      @@rurugby on sale prices in Germany/Netherlands: Scarabus NAS €29, Caol Ila 12 €35, Ardbeg Wee Beastie €35, Lagavulin 8 €45, Laphroaig 10 €30. So here they are all kinda close except Lagavulin which on a whole is currently outrageously expensive.

    So glad to see you do this review! I love, love, love Islay whiskey -- Lagavulin 16 as a gift got me into whiskey years ago, and showed me what whiskey could be - but don't always have the $60-$120 to drop on Lagavulin, Ardbeg, or Laphroiag. Recently in Tampa stumbled on Scarabus, and was completely bowled over. Like drinking the above mentioned for a fraction of the price. I currently live in the whiskey desert of Alabama, but while traveling through St. Louis, stopped and bought 4 bottles at TW, on sale for 29.99. Hands down the best and least known value in Islay Scotch. Cheers!

    Funny, I just picked up half of what they tried today and talked about. The scarabus, lagavulin 8 and 11 nick offerman, the ardbeg uagedail and wee beastie. All will be reviewed on my channel. I will review them this week but they won't post til like December. I think the scarabus compares to mcclellands but with more smoke. All are soooo good. This one reminds me of the smell of my grandparents fireplace. When I was a kid, I would sleep on the floor in front of it in the living room with my grandparents sometimes, when it had burnt down to only embers, like we were camping inside. It was a very big stone and tabby fireplace with 2 civil war era cannonballs garnishing the iron wood holding arms. There was usually live oak wood burning (was in Savannah, GA) in it. It’s just kind of amazing how the nose and even taste on this immediately throws me back to when I was only like 5-7 years old….. Very good imo!

    When this first came out I felt for sure it would be a Caol Ila, but having tried it its missing that briney note, also lacks a tcp note so I ruled out Laphroaig, it does have a meaty note so was wondering on the Lagavulin, but it also has a funky malty note which along with the fruity and meaty notes which for me surprisingly hints at Port Charlotte. If Bruichladdich has started sharing with independents such as Hunter Laing it could suggest interesting things ahead.

    On the topic of weird tasting notes, when I was digging as much as could into Macallan 12 Double Cask, I got a note that was exactly the smell of my Panama hat, a subtle vegetal grassy sweetness, so I put down Toquilla Leaf as the note. One of these episodes, another whiskey was described as having a barnyard hay-like note and I think that is precisely the family of smells that I was finding in the Macallan 12.

    Someone recommended this to me at a liquor store a few months back when I was looking for Lagavulin but they were all out and mentioned that I wanted it for a Smoky Cokie which I’ve heard about recently. This is much cheaper and gives you exactly what you need in a smoky mixed Coke drink.

    • @InWeCome
      @InWeCome 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah don't use expensive and complex Lagavulin in a mixed drink, to me that is such a waste. There are cheap peated whiskies like this one that are better suited for it. Other ones that come to mind are Islay Gold 10, Talisker 10, or a cheap Bowmore or Laphroaig. I can get those for under 30 euros.

    What's the chance this is Bunnahabhain (second biggest distillery on Islay)? And have you compared it to some IB Caol Ila like Port Askaig 8?

    Scarabs means ‘Rocky Place” in Nordic... it is also a mystical place in Islay.

    For what it is worth, I did some research, scarabs could be some of the first product out of the new Ardnahoe distillery on Islay.
