    About my hunt for serious peated whisky: started with Ardbeg 10 some years back that got me hooked on peated whisky forever. Since then have been on ventures for Islay and non-Islay peated whiskies. Many of them are way much more expensive than Ardbeg 10. Later encountered Corry, which to me is the pre-eminent peated whisky for any standard releases, price point aside. But we don't always reach for that kind of whisky daily for common dollar sense. So I always fall back on Ardbeg 10 as my go-to peated dram. It never disappoints and is still a steal for such a high quality dram.

    This was one of the first of the non-chill filtered non e150 single malts I'd ever tried. The fact that it is a lovely smoke bomb on the palate w/all of the complexity in sweet & savory notes from Islay is by happenstance..... I will on that same coin admit that I discovered it by seeking out that peat smoke flavor.... Ardbeg 10 remains a TOP FAVORITE and one I must have in the scotch/bourbon/whiskey library............. GREAT REVIEW!!!

    There's a reason why the Ten has remained affordable. The quality has gone down over the years. They probably just don't use the older good stuff in it anymore because it sells without it. But everyone should do themselves a favor and get a bottle of Ten from circa 2005-2010. Still affordable but a completely different dram. You can actually taste the finer older whisky in those. There's absolutely nothing in common if you compare the taste of the current Ten to an older version of Ten. But what can you do, that's how business works. First you gather some reputation with a great product and after it starts to sell with it's name you can put almost anything in the bottle and people will still pay for it.

    My review of Ardbeg 10, my new favorite
    Nose:
    Heavy minty peat smoke in sea mist & tanned leather, hints of Scotch heather settling into a light chocolate-vanilla syrup & Irish moss on cast-iron-reduced tree fruit
    Palate:
    Smoked dark fruits & charred berries with a citrus squeeze, fresh baseball glove leather, ancient wood, cacao nibs giving way to ginger snaps
    Aftertaste:
    Oak, clove & spices, black pepper, natural rope, aged leather with cigar tobacco

    I disagree that Ardbeg is a good whisky to get someone started in peated whiskies because it is one of the most heavily peated whiskies available. It was the first Islay I ever tried and it was a disaster. The earthy smoke completely overpowered my unfamiliar palate and all I could do was cough and spit. It turned me off from trying any Islay whiskies for years before I found something I could keep down with Bowmore and later found my favorite in Bunnahabhain. I still don't particularly like heavily peated whiskies but at least now with a better trained palate I can drink them without looking like a fool.

    I would have to disagree with you on one thing Erick it's not been consistent over the years. I have been drinking Ardbeg 10 for maybe 15 years and the early bottles were even better much more intense smoke and in my opinion the current releases are about 70% of the flavour of the very early couple bottles I had when I was first introduced. Nothing I have had since is better than that early Ardbeg 10 from over a decade ago. The recent releases have been watered down. I think it's because it was just too much intensity for most people. Now that the range has been broadened, with An Oa as a sort of entry into the brand I hope they return to the 10 to its former glory. To me the early Ardbeg 10 bottles I had were unbeatable, even better than Corryvrekan and Uigeadail. I

      I know there are as many Ardbeg hardcore fans as Laphroiag hardcore fans. But I think it’s without a question who makes the better 10 year old:
      - The Ardbeg 10 is unchill filtered, natural color and bottled at 46%
      - The Laphroaig 10 is chill filtered, artificially coloured with E150a and is bottled at 40%
      While the Ardbeg 10 is still presented as a craft whisky, Suntory decided to present Laphroaig 10 as a supermarket shelf whisky. As long as they are doing that, I will always prefer the Ardbeg 10.

    It can't be the 'best buy' when I think it is despicable. I tried Laphroaig, Talisker, Lagavulin, and Ardbeg thirty years ago and decided that they all tasted of burning garbage. I retried Ardbeg recently and determined that, by and large, it STILL tastes like garbage. I like peat, but it is Port Charlotte 10, Kilchoman Sanaig, or the more restrained peated expressions of Benromach and Isle of Raasay. Ardbeg sucks bad, both 10 and Wee Beastie. More for you and the cult members.

    Ardbeg 10 was the first whisky that made me sit up and take notice. It was overwhelming I must say but after about 15 years it is indeed one of my go to whiskies. In the beginning I would add a drop of it to a cheaper scotch and that's how I got used to it. Right now I have 3 favorites. 1. The Balvenie double wood. 2. The Ardbeg 10 and 3. The Lagavulin 16. The Lagavulin 16 is a bit too expensive in Ontario so I stick to Ardbeg. Eric what do you think?

    Ardbeg 10 price/quality wise so for a daily dram or even 2 yes it's the absolute best 1 from Islay. For example. I pay like 48-52euro for ardbeg 10. 55 for lagavulin 8 and 76 for the 16. For the port charlotte 10y I pay 66euro and then Laphroiag 10 cask strength (batch 14) 150euro. So yes for daily I would say an Ardbeg 10! Unchill filtered and no coloring.. 👍

I could buy a liter for 35 Euros then, and for years it was on my list of best value for money whisky's, together with Lagavulin 16, Glen Elgin 12, Glenmorangie Cellar 13 (unfortunately discontinued) and Balvenie 10 (also discontinued). Now a 70 cl. bottle of Ardbeg 10 is 40 Euros in the Netherlands (and the 1 liter botteling is no longer availeble), and though it's still good value for money, it's a big difference, 22 Euros more expensive per liter... Partly due to taxes of course. However, I recently foud yor video's and I like them a lot!

    Totally agree, just got a bottle of Ardbeg Uigeadail, and was bit disappointed, the 10 is much nicer taste

    I completely agree Erik, Ardbeg 10 is a great whiskey and it's nice to see it being recognised as such. It's delicious and a real treat.

    Ardbeg 10 was my first Islay scotch and I became instantly hooked. I was enjoying mostly highland until then. These days though, since the Wee Beastie came out, you're ALWAYS going to find the Ardbeg 5 Wee Beastie, Ardbeg 10 and Glenmorangie 10 (still my favorite Highland) in my cabinet!!
    I like to keep at least one bottle from every region on hand. ;)

    100% truth . Ardbeg is a 1-2-3 combo of a Malt. 46 abv -no e150a -nonchill filter. All Expressions are legit Best .Bown down.🤟🤟🤟.

    Good video Eric. Everything you just said in my opinion is 100% spot on. The ratio of quality + price is very good. I actually love ardbeg 10. Ardbeg probably know that they have too keep the quality/price ratio good because it's probably their bread and butter whisky.

      Thanks for watching. Another great thing about the whisky is you can feel free to share it with everyone because it is so affordable.

    I prefer Lagavulin 16. More complex. But Ardbeg 10 is damn good irrespective of price, and so far unbeatable in bang for the buck.

    • @groberti
      @groberti 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lag 16 is very good as well! Still it is interesting what people are looking for in a scotch :D I don't necessarily like a whisky better just because it is complex. There are actually very complex whiskies which I dislike. I don't like the taste, still. So I guess I'm looking for how enjoyable a whisky is for me, that is of the utmost importance for my taste. Both Ardbeg 10 and Lag 16 are very tasty but imho Ardbeg 10 is a bit more intense and a bit more smoky. Some of it must be because of higher proof (46% vs 43%) and chill filtration.

    I’m really just starting out my whisky journey I have really enjoyed the likes of monkey shoulder, highland park 12, Belvenie doublewood 12, Aberlour etc but my first bottle I tried was a miniature of laphroaig 10 and oh man I did not like that peat just didn’t not expect it, but after a few months of of getting into a few different whiskies I recently got Ardbeg 10 and it is my favourite bottle so far out of everything I have tried that campfire aroma and the taste just lasts and lasts even till the next day 😃 it’s amazing stuff.

    Ardbeg is one great whisky for the price. I would like to see them do different variations of the 10 Sherry, PORT!, etc. I have a bottle of wee beastie in the cabinet... I’m excited to try a simple Ardbeg with a sherry influence. Also, I like how you put your videos together. Keep it up Erik! Thanks for sharing the knowledge.

    I had the Ardbeg 10 in my early stages of whisky tasting. Wasn't a fan of the peated taste. Gradually I'm re-exploring the peat flavor again. I would like to and hope to build up my pallet to further enjoy these.

  • @SethWilson
    @SethWilson 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I’ve tried pricier peated whiskeys like Talisker and Lagavulin, and they’re amazing. But Ardbeg 10 is just as good, and costs much less. Laphroaig was my introduction to peated scotch, but it tastes like gasoline to me now.
