I don't think it is abandonware, my knowledge is that the rights are hold by different parties, so it's kind of in rights management hell. I do not think that the facehugger and chestburster stage are too forced, they are somehow the elongated movement tutorial of the xenomorph stage, movement is what make it most deadly, not the giant claws, razor sharp tail or pistoning tongue. Overall a typical Monolith quality shooter, hand crafted with passion.
If you have a crash on loading a level, Win98 compatibility mode sure does the trick, but the widescreen patch fix provided with custom launcher will not work anymore, it will launch on the selected resolution but with stretched graphics/HUD, i recommand not using the compatibility modes but instead launch the Custom Launcher as admin and activate Vsync in the graphics driver panel (also force anisotrope filtering and AA from there if you want), also make sure that lithtech.exe is configured to launch as admin, and finally don't forget to cap the framerate to 60 if you're using 100-120-144hz monitor as Vsync doesn't lock your framerate, 60fps+ leads to dialogue skipping, some doors not opening and some broken scripts/animations. PS : Lithtech engine games hate G-Sync, if you have a G-Sync monitor with G-sync activated by default, just put it off for lithtech.exe on the driver panel and use standard Vsync instead, also if you have high DPI gaming mouse, the aiming can look sluggish, reduce the polling rate of your mouse to 125hz in the driver panel of your mouse if it has one, or use an old optical mouse, i think it's over, that was a bloody hell running this game on Win10 and modern hardware, all the Lithtech engines are, but this one and the first No One Lives Forever are in a high level of shitty retrocompatibility
PS2 : 11:25 correct 16/9 aspect ratio on AvP2 Base game, just look at the shape of the pistol, 11:44 stretched image due to using win98 compatibility mode for Primal Hunt (More difficult to run on modern hardware than the base game) i had the exact same problem as you, use the method above to solve that
I used to compete online in this game. I was with a group called the Pred hunters. We we colonial marines but focused on killing predator players, Back then the sniper rifle was the best way to kill them and it usually meant sacrificing a man in our squad to learn the predators position since they were cloaked and usually had the high ground. So many good memories!
Atticus X Use to go into an Alien hive with a shotgun or smartgun and my buddy would wipe the walls down with a flame thrower looking for Alien players that were sitting still and ambushing. Then I'd kill whatever fell to the ground on fire.
Atticus X This game will always be near and dear to me. I was pretty young when I played this online, _maybe_ 10 at most. In fact, it was either this or Tribes that was my first real step into online gaming. I loved every minute of it. I'm sure the people I played with hated me because I was no doubt terrible, but I was blissfully unaware.
As a predator main, melee only, I find that racist and highly offensive! If only there was still servers, my combi stick and I would give you such a spanking.
I spent so much time in multiplayer there, luvd elimination matches especially when u are last human survivor and u just barrikade in 1 room planting prox mines everywhere ahhh these were the days.
same here I spent so many hours in it. I remember last man survivor matches when all humans defend in vents, but eventually fall on by one. And that feeling when you were molting into alien Queen , ahhh memories
It seriously to this day has been the best FPS Multiplayer experience I've ever had. Evac and Overrun were easily the highlights of this game and it blows my mind that the newer AVP game \ Colonial Marines didn't include either. The map Alley in Evac was easily the scariest to play as a marine and the most intense because you had to trigger the ship door to open inside the Alien Hive before you could get trigger the count down, also the level design was way ahead of it's time with multiple routes that both Marine and Alien players to take ( yes I know you can change the races around but on the [Alpha] Clan server I played on it was always Alien and Marines ). Overrun was another amazing mode and I remember my favorite Maps being Quarantine and Compound, the simple Mechanic of Marines having 1 life and Aliens having 2 just made the game so much more tense and also rewarding if you held out. I hope that if another AVP game comes out they look back to the modes and options that this game had such as Class Weapon Sets ( Marines spawn with a weapon kit but can ONLY use those weapons ) Queen Molting Kills ( you kill enough people you morph into a queen ) The Exo Suit in certain situations, Alien Life Cycle in certain situations, the Alien Unique Classes, but most importantly EVAC and OVERRUN modes. Evac should also have a verity of maps in size be it the smaller sizes like Alley, or a huge map like something in Battle Field but you are in a Space Station or Colony and have to complete Multiple Objectives before the Drop Ship shows up for Evac, and there could be options to Repawn the teams upon objective completion or just stick to Marines 1 life and Aliens 2 lives. Anyways I hope one day we see a Proper AVP Sequel and I will be on Multiplayer day one.
Well, if you can't buy it. Then its simply Abandonware. And no one should feel bad, for downloading it for free. Abandonware is not illegal, nor is it pirating. AvP2 is a great game. And every shooter, action and Alien/Predator fan should have played it, at least once. Awesome Review btw.
I don't get why anyone should feel bad by pirating a 17 years old game, which is not available for buying, which means anyone who has the rights for it won't suffer at all.
@@Buraz93 Plus the game is in Copyright Limbo with several companies owning different parts of the game. The game engine is owned my Monolith which is owned by Warner Bros, Sega who holds the game rights to Aliens and Predator, and Disney who owns the IP of Aliens and Predator so unless all those companies get together to make a remastered version or a digital release of it then it won't be appearing on a digital storefront anytime soon.
@@Webshooters1 Don't forget that Activison owns the Sierra branding so they also helped to publish the game, so all three of those companies would have to get together to do it unless Activision doesn't own publishing rights anymore.
Thanks to the No One Lives Forever (an another great game by Monolith) copyright debacle, I'm afraid that this game will never be released digitally. Just look that incident up on Google. I believe Kotaku covered this issue in detail back in 2015. The incident that I mentioned will be related to Aliens versus Predator 2's rights holders. Multiple IP rights holders that does not care can prevent a game from getting a second life in the form of a re-release, remaster or a remake.
... Oh God! Yeah that was terrible. And one of those weird thing as why doesn't Warner Bros not do anything with it? They pretty much own the game from what the article said (or the vast majority of it) The big thing with AVP2 is that Disney now owns Fox.... (god does that sound awful to say). And Disney is like the crotchety old grandparent that video games will rot your brains and make you a delinquient.
Just found this channel out randomly, but I don’t regret it I really appreciate the professionalism in your reviews and how unbiased you are, so keep up the good work :3
Ah, thank you so much for putting this together I highly enjoyed it! I own avp2 and primal hunt on disk, also thank you so very much for providing the links to get the higher resolution I am totally going to install this right now!
You are *never* on board the Verloc or the planet Korari in AVP2. The Predators land on LV-1201 in response to the Ancient Predator's signal in Primal Hunt. You take control of Prince once the hunting party has landed. All three campaigns come together at the FOB, Forward Observation Pods. Number 5 was lost during the events of Primal Hunt. The Verloc is the ship that the marines arrive in during the marine campaign. It is only ever seen in cutscenes, and as a multiplayer map.
I was 8 years old when I firdt played this game back in 2001, scared the hell out of me but still my favorite series, had my copy till I suddenly lost it after 10 years of owning it when I moved sadly... Plan on buying the game again sometime soon
The arm bug is indeed from it running in widescreen. The viewmodels for the marine were presumably created for 4:3 monitors and the mods that allow you to play the game in 16:9 allow you to see this developer oversight.
when I was young and did not know anything about who developes video games, I was always having and eye out for those games with that mountain logo on them (sierra games) I loved them and was sad when they shut their doors
OMG MAN! You just gave me few hours of FUN! THANKS! Game was too dark on my PC. Now it is working great. P.S. Custom Launcher should look like what cause I don't see any custom .exe files.....game is starting through regular AutoRun.
Thank you for the install tutorial man. I'm going to try and install these on my next day off. So looking forward to playing both games in 4k if I can get them to work.
Had this game for years on my PC playin on min settings till I finally got an upgraded PC, multiplayer was Legendary. Hunting squads of predator hunters as the predator or evicerating things as an alien. Gaming peak.
A great review. It's really cool that you showed how to run the game on win10 and how to add a widescreen resolution, most reviewers just cry that the game does not work on win10 or there is no possibility to play in widescreen mode AVP2 and Alien isolation are the best games about aliens in my opinion
I still have this on disk somewhere, musta logged hundreds of hours playing this online back when it came out. It's good to hear there's community patches to get online still, might need to look my copy out....
One tiny note: I remember playing the original game (not the expansions) a long time ago, and in hardcore mode, pounce doesn't shred enemies, instead it only stuns them, meaning you can easily cover distance and finish them off while leaving their bodies intact for recovering health. And since in hardcore mode you get shredded by basically anything that is not a pistol, that makes the pounce invaluable. I think this is the only case I have ever seen of an attack being improved by being weaker.
The trick with Stealth in both AvP1 and AvP2 is to walk with it and sneak up, not to run around. The more you run the more visible you become. Aside from Aliens though who can see all living things. Well the main difference with Predalien is being able to take a beating while dishing out a ton of damage. Basically as Predalien, you can one-shot Pounce kill almost everything in the game. I always ignored the Wildlife myself. 20:30 - Ahahaha those fucking bugs. I nearly got a heart attack the first time I played it, and second time, and third time, because those damn bugs would jump into my face sending the motion tracker into a hissy fit. 24:10 - Take my word for it. Disable the music in this game. Not that it's bad per say but the music ruins any horror moment of the game because as soon as aliens spawn, the music kicks in. It ruins it. 27:50 - Hey, I enjoy the plot D: I enjoyed this review.
I Installed This Game On A Buddy's System And Was Having Issues Regarding It Crashing As Soon As I Booted It Up Without Any Error Message. I Had To Go Into The Device Manager And Disable All HID Devices One By One Until I Got The Game Working. Hope This Helps Someone
This takes me back to 2002 when i played this game, when i was using an ATI GPU (9700 or 9800 with 128mb Ram!?). AvP2 was such a great game... i loved playing as the Predator and spent many hrs playing the multiplayer. Great stuff!
Awesome review. :) Will you cover the Hidden and Dangerous series? It's a highly underrated tactical WW2 shooter. I'd like to hear your opinions on it!
In primal hunt the predator can set self destruct bomb too which will explode in 30 secs and if im not wrong you need to collect 10 skulls to be able to do that.
Got it working on wine for Ubuntu Linux. A lot of older games seem to work ok on wine or proton pack included with Steam. Good review and good talking about the skirmish pack - got that as well.
You can still buy a copy of this on Amazon but there aren't many copies left. The original Aliens versus Predator is on GOG, but when Warner bought what was left of Sierra Online / Fox Interactive they didn't obtain the rights to Aliens Vs Predator 2 so it has been abandoned since. It is unlikely this game will ever be made available for download.
I played this game when I was probably 10, and remember quite vividly picking up and slamming my mouse down in shock when I first had the aliens jump out at me in the marine campaign. My dad still wont let me live that down. Good times.
Aliens versus Predator 2 (2001) is an absolute masterpiece. The story is amazing, the gameplay, the atmosphere. Everything about it. Overall a 10/10 installment to the series.
This is defenitely the best AvP2 review I've ever seen so far. Almost every aspect of the game has been covered including non-respawning Aliens which Is the "feature" I personally dislike in this instalment the most.
I can't believe I'm just finding this channel now, good god what a gem. Please take a look into the Metal Gear Solid series! I'd love your input on MGS1/MGS Peace Walker etc!
Were you able to get mods to work with the custom launcher because when i typed something in the command line it would just erase the line and not load the mod.
Love multiplayer! Always played as a light predator with remote bombs.. best tactic was to sit on a couple of bombs and wait for an Alien to lunge at you then leap out the way and detonate! Would love to see some servers up again.
If I try the widescreen fix the whole game just shifts into the corner, it's fullscreen but the main menu is in the left bottom corner and the gameplay is so sensitive, any ideas?
The online for this game was fucking amazing! Marines had power armored Exosuits like Ripleys power loader but armored and with guns. Aliens had life cycle, they'd spawn as a face hugger, attack a human or predator and become a Xenomorph, then if an Alien player got enough kills it's morph into a fucking Queen and be a giant unstoppable monster! It also did away with AvP use of Doom style weapon pickups for the Marines and went with a Battlefield 1942 era Class system. The online teams were also balanced with it being like 4 Predators, 8 Marines, and 12 Aliens per round. Predators played by stealth, Aliens by wave attacks and ambushes, and Marines by firepower. PERFECT three way asymmetrical Warfare! Online for this was amazing! Use to go into an Alien hive with a shotgun or smartgun and my buddy would wipe the walls down with a flame thrower looking for Alien players that were sitting still and ambushing. Then I'd kill whatever fell to the ground on fire. Best Aliens experience ever!
At some point between when I got this game in 2003 and now, I lost the discs. I really wish it came out digitally because I don't have a disc drive on my build from last year and won't ever put one in. Probably lost the game sometime during college.
How did you fix the mouse sensitivity being different for the X axis compared to Y ? I've reduced my polling rate to 125 and i've downloaded the mouse wrapper, but it doesn't completely fix the problem, it merely reduces its effects. My mouse is a Logitech G203, and i'm running Win7 btw. The only way to fix it for me seems to be using an old track-ball ps/2 mouse, which i have but don't feel like plugging in every time i wanna play this game. I'm curious to know if you have the same issue and simply put up with it, or if you found some sort of workaround.
good review. only one thing bugged me. its gib not jib, sorry about being the one to point it out. over all tho very well put together video. i loved playing the avp games and still do on steam sometimes.
yeah true, i just never heard it said that way. whenever i get turned into flying mince my mates laugh and tell me how hard i was gibbed lol if you want a way to make sure then you should look up a vido of skyrim and look up staint jib. his name is said the same way you said gib mate. not trying to be a pest jsut trying to give a hand if possible
We sorely need a digital re-release, either on Steam or GOG, I don't care which. (GOG tends to ship working copies of older games compared to Steam, though) This game is my alias namesake; hasn't changed since I played the game as a kid. More people oughta be able to jump in without much hassle.
This is THE game (along with Deus Ex) that got me into PC and multiplayer gaming. Was the engine perfect? No. Was the balance perfect? No. Was it the best multiplayer experience I ever had? YES!
Gaming Pastime thanks and I’ve tried every fix I could find, including the one you mentioned but nothing has ever worked. Only thing I can think is it’s the mouse itself, are you using a Logitech or anything like that?
As somebody who played these games when they were new and up until the unholy union of Blizzard/Activision came and ruined them... In the original game, the PredAlien was a multiplayer only unless using cheats to morph into it during a mission. It lacked the head bite feature, it moved slower, but it was the single most powerful type of Xeno sans a Queen in terms of raw striking power with the Praetorian as a close second. The Primal Hunt single player version was essentially just a reskinned Drone/Warrior which I agree is a bit disappointing, however in Multiplayer for Primal Hunt it reverts back to how it was in the original but it gains the head bite ability which can make it potentially much more lethal. You can also charge up the plasma caster for a bigger blast radius and more damage. But some of the custom maps and are actually pretty good. I dont know how many files are still out there for them but there was a great one Under The Hunter's Moon which was essentially the first AVP movie as mission pack. There are changes of course to the plot but it was rather good as a whole, well designed, and while it had some glitches that was mostly due to the engine.
I wish Rebellion had made a better AvP game. As graphically nice and gory it was, the movement, weapons(50+ Pulse Rifle rounds to kill a Drone, really?) and finishing moves were too clunky to use. Also the campaigns were pretty short which was also kinda a downer and the story was forgettable. It's great to see you're covering these series and providing helpful insight on how to get them running with mods/fixes. Also I think collecting trophy heads of the humans grants you more ammo in the next level.
AvP3 ( *2010* ) is essentially a remake of AvP Classic with a more coherent story line. Personally, I did not find the game " _too short_ " like so many others thought, but then again, I prefer when games aren't taking 60 hours to beat so perhaps that has something to do with it.
I hate to say it but I think that game suffered heavily for being designed as a console shooter. Especially the multiplayer. The counterstrike style fast gameplay was gone, and replaced with "press X to gore kill".
Just finished watching your twisted metal video's if you get a chance you should check out the Full Auto games similar concept but racers for the most part so they might not be your cup of tea.
"Since enemies seem to always spot you" After seeing him sprint around cloaked in both this and AVP1999 yeah I can see why LMAO the faster you move the less effective your cloak is, if you stand still in AVP1999 you can see this by looking at your arms, standing still you're essentially totally invisible, moving around your silhouette darkens and you become more visible. Idk how he didn't figure this out while playing that. Maybe in AVP2 it's just an AI thing, I never got to play it but I will definitely confirm that the cloak works fine in AVP1999
yes actually all human and predator players where fair game heck even some maps had Animels you could face hug (moded in maps) that would let ya become a runner alien if life cycle is turned off you can just pick a Xeno but with life cycle on no matter what you picked get enough kills you could molt in to a queen
It comes to our attention that this game may actually be abandonware. We didn't know or think about it when reviewing it.

I mean I was able to attain the game without the discs. There's ways. Also you need a master patch to play online.

27:50 - Hey, I enjoy the plot D:
I enjoyed this review.
I really like your style of reviewing. Reminds me of GGGmanlives but without the macho humor.
Gman was an inspiration. We're big fans of his work.
This takes me back to 2002 when i played this game, when i was using an ATI GPU (9700 or 9800 with 128mb Ram!?). AvP2 was such a great game... i loved playing as the Predator and spent many hrs playing the multiplayer. Great stuff!
Radeon 9000 Series came out on 2004
Your channel has been a pleasant surprise, I like your choice of games to review.
I did like AvP 2010 quite a bit tho, i'm part of the problem.
AvP 2010 isn't as bad as some people make it out to be. I just think the previous games are better.
Have you seen GmanLives's video on the Primal Hunt expansion?
A great review of this classic.
Can i ask, are there some mods which you would recommend?
The mod I like using is an HD pack of sorts that changes the textures and general atmosphere of the game to be more like the movies. It’s great.
Good times.
Multiplayer is where it really shines. Sooooo much fun
The Predalien is a bit stronger and also slower than the Alien. At least that's how I remember it.
Yeah you can see that in multiplayer actually.
I have it running but I could never get it running in widescreen
The only thing I have yet to get to work is the Alien nav vision. Thanks for the review!
thats a nice review ! your channel is growing really fast! Can you review the game Metro 2033 in a day?
I can't believe I'm just finding this channel now, good god what a gem. Please take a look into the Metal Gear Solid series! I'd love your input on MGS1/MGS Peace Walker etc!
Were you able to get mods to work with the custom launcher because when i typed something in the command line it would just erase the line and not load the mod.
Wow, great Video!
One day I hope NightDive studios remasters AVP 2000, AVP2, AVP2PH like they did the Turok games.
Hey Gaming Pastime, you should review the Original Thief Series...very good stealth games. And check out the graphics mods for them.
Love multiplayer! Always played as a light predator with remote bombs.. best tactic was to sit on a couple of bombs and wait for an Alien to lunge at you then leap out the way and detonate! Would love to see some servers up again.
Imagine what this game would look like today, with graphics like we saw in Alien Isolation.
If I try the widescreen fix the whole game just shifts into the corner, it's fullscreen but the main menu is in the left bottom corner and the gameplay is so sensitive, any ideas?
my favorite avp2 game and one of my favorite shooters. does anyone know how to download it on the Mac?
You can have the framerate uncapped, but there will be bugs that happen throughout the game such as certain doors not opening.
When I did all you said, the game says the disc isn't inserted, dunno tbh but they should defs put this game on g.o.g
Subscribing just to wait for the AVP 2010 review =D
Great video. Am I the only one though that doesn't like having the ending custcene at the end of the video?
You can finish the Predalien campaign in 6 minutes. I watched a speedrun. Didn't even use any glitches or exploits. Just pounced everywhere.
Best multiplayer experience i ever had. Played it for years until the dedi servers were put down.
At some point between when I got this game in 2003 and now, I lost the discs. I really wish it came out digitally because I don't have a disc drive on my build from last year and won't ever put one in. Probably lost the game sometime during college.
My all time favorite fps Multiplayer.
I didn't have any issues. Logitech G400.
How can i download the skirmish pack?
AvP 3 is next then?)
God, I'm glad I still have my copy X_x
Still the best entry despite it's (technical) shortcomings...
@ 18:53: The Aliens always spot the Predators because they appear to them as *GIANT GREEN AURAS* when cloaked lol
I like this game just slightly better than the first. They are both amazing though.
good review. only one thing bugged me. its gib not jib, sorry about being the one to point it out. over all tho very well put together video. i loved playing the avp games and still do on steam sometimes.
You know what's funny? Another person commented the opposite on a previous string of reviews. Jib. Can't win.
yeah true, i just never heard it said that way. whenever i get turned into flying mince my mates laugh and tell me how hard i was gibbed lol if you want a way to make sure then you should look up a vido of skyrim and look up staint jib. his name is said the same way you said gib mate. not trying to be a pest jsut trying to give a hand if possible
No worries. I prefer to say things accurately. I'd probably be better off saying "bloody chunks".
for me when im gibbed i use the term "flying mince" but its each to there own
Gaming Pastime
I think it’s more of a personal choice. Like the pronunciation of GIF.
We sorely need a digital re-release, either on Steam or GOG, I don't care which. (GOG tends to ship working copies of older games compared to Steam, though)
This game is my alias namesake; hasn't changed since I played the game as a kid. More people oughta be able to jump in without much hassle.
Anywhere I can purchase a digital copy?
I think it's abandonware now. You can probably get it for free.
This is THE game (along with Deus Ex) that got me into PC and multiplayer gaming. Was the engine perfect? No. Was the balance perfect? No. Was it the best multiplayer experience I ever had? YES!
What kind of mouse do you use? I’ve have mouse issues with this game for years :(
I didn't have any issues. But check here - pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Aliens_versus_Predator_2
There's a fix for uncontrollable mouse movement.
Gaming Pastime thanks and I’ve tried every fix I could find, including the one you mentioned but nothing has ever worked. Only thing I can think is it’s the mouse itself, are you using a Logitech or anything like that?
Logitech G400s
Gaming Pastime cool thanks
There are changes of course to the plot but it was rather good as a whole, well designed, and while it had some glitches that was mostly due to the engine.
the next one going to be about the 2010 version?
Correct.
Personally, I did not find the game " _too short_ " like so many others thought, but then again, I prefer when games aren't taking 60 hours to beat so perhaps that has something to do with it.
also let's not forget that as a Marine YOU CAN FUCKING PUNCH XENOMORPHS. I mean, how?
I hate to say it but I think that game suffered heavily for being designed as a console shooter. Especially the multiplayer. The counterstrike style fast gameplay was gone, and replaced with "press X to gore kill".
I know a lot of people didn't like it back in the day, but you should do a review on Predator: Concrete Jungle for Xbox.
Coming in a few weeks
3:45 Review of AVP2 starts.
Just finished watching your twisted metal video's if you get a chance you should check out the Full Auto games similar concept but racers for the most part so they might not be your cup of tea.
"Since enemies seem to always spot you"
After seeing him sprint around cloaked in both this and AVP1999 yeah I can see why LMAO
the faster you move the less effective your cloak is, if you stand still in AVP1999 you can see this by looking at your arms, standing still you're essentially totally invisible, moving around your silhouette darkens and you become more visible. Idk how he didn't figure this out while playing that. Maybe in AVP2 it's just an AI thing, I never got to play it but I will definitely confirm that the cloak works fine in AVP1999
the multiplayer was awesome.. I loved hunt and survival.. hunt was awesome though.. 1 pred for 8 marines.. so cool
In the multiplayer mode you could set it for alien life cycle c: depending on who you face hug will make you a different alien~
That sounds pretty cool.
it was as ya had to be sneeky with a Face hugger otherwise other players would steal your host ..Or you would get toasted by flame throwers XD
Yeah, but at least you could facehug anyone I assume? In SP, the game clearly wants you to facehug only specific NPCs.
yes actually all human and predator players where fair game heck even some maps had Animels you could face hug (moded in maps) that would let ya become a runner alien if life cycle is turned off you can just pick a Xeno but with life cycle on no matter what you picked get enough kills you could molt in to a queen
