This is still my favourite 'bot' FPS, the multitude of game types, the mutators, the bot characters, stats, preferences, all of it is enormously entertaining and easy to get in to.
I remember when I got my hands on this game as a 15-year-old. At the time there was nothing like it and it felt that I had a game with actual endless replay value, thanks to the all the free content you could find and download through the Internet (I think I still have DVD-Rs full of custom maps and mods somewhere in my house). This game, alongside the original UT, where the ones that made me appreciate the PC as a gaming platform and also consider it the ULTIMATE platform when it comes to gaming. I mean, come on: how many games LIKE THIS you know? Total spot on review! Nice work!
I spent practically the better half of a whole decade playing this game I completely agree with your statement Man i loved it when games were about fun instead of companies trying to skinnerbox you into emptying your wallet into their storefronts.
The reason for the weird 2003/2004 thing was that epic had aspirations of making UT a combat sport series like madded. However, Epic had some degree of self-respect and realised that they weren't able to release a significant improvement every year.
Such a legendary game, I cannot stop playing it! The AI bots are so damn amazing it keeps you playing it for years to come! The Ballistic Weapons mod is the best mod ever, so many weapons and options, its timeless! Definitely gonna make more videos about it!!
Man I've been playing this game since this game never gets old thanks to the player like Bots always dodging, strafing and hammer jumping and more. Overall this game is a 10/10
My favorite FPS, it's just endless fun and no modern game can compare to this, the amount of content in vanilla UT 2004 puts any modern game to shame, specially when it comes to AI. Modern games - AI? what the fuck is AI? just make it online and idiots will buy it because twitchers will play it.
I feel that Ballistic Mod weapons are too big, especially when compared to originals. Like pistols are about 70% size of a 3-barelled rocket launcher, and most models occupy 1/3 of the screen. Despite all its pro's, I don't like it.
I still have my 15-year old copy of this game in my PC, full to the brim of mods and custom maps. It's the perfect arena shooter... and this is coming from a Quake III Arena guy
The thing i miss the most is the announcer saying the characters name when choosing skins. They only left the announcer for Mr Crow. The menu music was better in 2003 imo too.
I swear, getting this game fully modded and stable was a bitch, (seeing what mods worked with what, one frustration uninstall and probably 1/2 week of testing) but it was worth it. Enjoying UT2k4 like I did when I was a kid. Timeless game. I try to jump on online matches sometimes but its usually an invasion server called Monster Madness. Very good stuff and Ballistic Weapons is good too. Have it myself along with Sergeant Kelly's weapons.

The technical difference between ut2004 and ut2003 is that ut2003 had a different *network stack* and running ut2004 as an expansion pack (instead of a full-game which is what they opted for in the end) would be incompatible with ut2003. That said, they could have made a _mandatory_ patch available but perhaps they felt it was too big a marketing risk. I do feel it is a shame for ut2003 owners. They had paid for the game and a patch would have allowed ut2004 and ut2003 be compatible. It did come across somewhat like ut2003 customers were starved of the community as people would be bound to leapfrog away into ut2004. Also it is kinda counterproductive how ut2003 gets no patch to make it work as ut2004 but then the anthology version of ut2004 gets the 3369 patch. I think it would have been a fair compromise if the software-house had at least allowed owners of ut2003 use their serial-codes to run an online self-hosting server patched and compatible with ut2004 so that they could then have a dedicated server alongside buying ut2004 just as the games machine on a different pc. Makes sense especially since linux was supported and so linux could use the dedicated patched server for the ut2003 serial-code for ut2004, and then the ut2004 disk could be just their standard windowsXP/Vista/7 gaming machine for their ut2004 client. Sure a "patch" would essentially be a hundred megabytes of total replacement code, but a dedicated server is online anyway so they'd have been able to download it. The ut2004 was oddly unfinished anyway upon release as it did not support 64bit or dual-core/multicore. So a patch for ut2003 conversion into 2004 would have made sense anyway 9because you need to patch either ut2003 or ut2004 whichever you buy). Really, a patch to support multiple cores (e.g. quad) would have been worth it especially since linux servers used multiplecores or sockets. Don't get me wrong. I like ut2004 as a good game. Just odd decisions were made here and there.
Your videos are amazing. Not only do you go into great detail about the game itself but also the mods. I really can't stress how annoying it is when people recommend mods without going into detail as to what they do. It's very hard to tell if you're going to like a mod or not. Anyway you also said that you tired changing the sound in the game through a dot ini file. Could you please go into more detail about that?
There's a bunch of sound options in the ini file, more options than what's found in-game. They can all be set to different values. I just never got the right balance.
This game is so fucking addictive...I mean i had three diferent hardwares and all had UT2004. And thanks for this video, i was presented to Ballistic Weapons mod, and almost had no life anymore(....Not!)
Thanks for the great review, and the FOV fix! Works great for vanilla, but doesn't seem to work for Ballistic Weapons, although I can see it works for you. Did you do anything extra to make BW play nice with it?
+baddude1337 not really. It should just work. Do you specifically mean the FOV fix didn't work or the HUD fix? I would say reinstall whatever didn't work.
Gaming Pastime The FOV one. Vanilla weapons are fine but the BW ones are still 'zoomed in'. Done all the ini tweaks and the like, so not sure what's up!
I love this game. Never played online against people, but the bots were good fun. The game also has an built-in music player were you could load mp3 or ogg music files. It was quite an experience playing DM while listening to Metallica and Card Captor Sakura OST.
Aw, shit, those bot names made me feel 13 again. And of course the orgasmic announcer, appropriate. Never played this one as much as I did the 1999 version... I think I still like it more, but this one wasn't bad either. Although, vanilla game was NOT for a single player, since bots were too damn dumb and fed like crazy. Beat it anyways, a time or two. Good times. Nice job.
The gibbing in UT2004 was rather disappointing imho. Every little piece of meat looks pretty much the same. I'd like to be able to differentiate a severed head from a part of a leg.
+Juan Maidana I want to say yes but we did not try. I would assume the host/server has to be running it. Although, someone can correct me if I'm wrong.
Hey there! Sgt Kelly here, developer of some of the add-on packs for BW. You can definitely play online, and I think there are actually a few dedicated servers still running Ballistic! Basically just the host needs to run the pack and all the people joining will automatically download it.
Well thank you very much for the information, I will definitely consider buying UT 2004 in steam so I can play in that server. (If the steam version is compatible of course).
playing most of the games in the franchise i'd say that 2004 was better because of how many gamemodes and maps there was (not including mods). There is also more weapons and 3 extra characters to unlock (Xan, Malcom and war lord) Xan and Malcom are returning characters from ut99 and to unlock them you have to play the game on a different difficulty if i remember correctly. If you can, buy both games and play them you will have some great fun.
there is a fun secret , if you have setting NOT at max quality and then set then to max you will hear something ;). also with ligthing sniper (forgot name) if you hit top of head and enemy did not die then he will have head on fire for some time lol. if you kill with similar top of head hit then head will be missing and neck will be on fire
Great Game, strange review. Umm…when comparing screens, that are different; umm, maybe try using the exact same Map/Hallway/Movement Direction. What do I know…I wasn’t born before the age of redundancy and segue into cliches.
This is still my favourite 'bot' FPS, the multitude of game types, the mutators, the bot characters, stats, preferences, all of it is enormously entertaining and easy to get in to.

I completely agree with your statement
Man i loved it when games were about fun instead of companies trying to skinnerbox you into emptying your wallet into their storefronts.
Onslaught on Torlan. To this day is still my favorite FPS Map, and its still fun as hell with Bots.
The reason for the weird 2003/2004 thing was that epic had aspirations of making UT a combat sport series like madded. However, Epic had some degree of self-respect and realised that they weren't able to release a significant improvement every year.
And now all they do is Fortnite battle passes LOL
Hot damn! Another great overview, I always like how you look at the mods
After you fire the translocator module, you can view through it pressing Q, like a wireless camera
love the bots names
Such a legendary game, I cannot stop playing it! The AI bots are so damn amazing it keeps you playing it for years to come!
The Ballistic Weapons mod is the best mod ever, so many weapons and options, its timeless! Definitely gonna make more videos about it!!
I enjoy those, but nothing can top UT, so much fun! Best bots ever!
Man I've been playing this game since this game never gets old thanks to the player like Bots always dodging, strafing and hammer jumping and more.
Overall this game is a 10/10
koki nsimba hell yeah.
We still run a dedicated BW Deathmatch/Freon server for UT2004: LDG Ballistic Weapons, under the 'Onslaught' Gametype. Always looking for new players.
A great sever !!! I am playing it almost daily.
Hopefully I'll have my PC going again soon. Still want new players?
Still active?
maybe they deemed it 𝘴 𝘦 𝘹 𝘺 but misspelled it.
>i dont want to have to rely on other people to have fun
FINA-FUCKING-LY SOMEONE WITH THE *correct* OPINION
My favorite FPS, it's just endless fun and no modern game can compare to this, the amount of content in vanilla UT 2004 puts any modern game to shame, specially when it comes to AI.
Modern games - AI? what the fuck is AI? just make it online and idiots will buy it because twitchers will play it.
AGREED FULLY however the ballistic mod is still being updated by LDG and for me fps and overall is more stable also 64 bit i a must!
Thanks for all the links to the mods as well, makes it really easy to get this gaming running the way I want on modern hardware.
I simply stopped listening and was enjoying creativity with bot names xD
I feel that Ballistic Mod weapons are too big, especially when compared to originals. Like pistols are about 70% size of a 3-barelled rocket launcher, and most models occupy 1/3 of the screen. Despite all its pro's, I don't like it.
When's killing floor multilayer classic that started as a ut2k4 mod! Multilayer is awesome and is the best way to play but solo is fun too
I still have my 15-year old copy of this game in my PC, full to the brim of mods and custom maps. It's the perfect arena shooter... and this is coming from a Quake III Arena guy
Its good to have bots.
I only ever owned the demo... but I played the hell out of it!
There was a demo??
12:00 it’s been a year since i first saw this vid and i still don’t know if gp said choppy, shoddy, or _both_
I like the male announcer in this game, he sounds badass
The thing i miss the most is the announcer saying the characters name when choosing skins. They only left the announcer for Mr Crow.

this is where real online fps started !

Just putting together a Ryzen PC now. Going to give these mods a go. Spent so many weekends and afternoons playing this game.
Great video, you convinced me
You should also do the red orchestra mod
Can someone please tell me the name of the map at 5:00?
Come frag with us! Omnipotent Onslaught and House of Carpe Team DM Freon mod !!!
Omnipotents and Miasma are my two go-tos when playing 2004.
Your videos are amazing. Not only do you go into great detail about the game itself but also the mods. Holy shit!!!
Unreal Anthology would make such a great console downloadable for PS store or Xbox live
How to change voices?
heey, could you please share that file where you changed bot names? it looks hilarious and I would love to play with Captain Rimjob and others
sergeant kellys weapon pack for some reason i can't use its weapons in game
did anyone achived to combine ONS + Ballistic? that would be a whole new game
nice Review :D
This game is so fucking addictive...I mean i had three diferent hardwares and all had UT2004. And thanks for this video, i was presented to Ballistic Weapons mod, and almost had no life anymore(....Not!)

When we getting some Rise of the Triad love????
I love this game. Never played online against people, but the bots were good fun. The game also has an built-in music player were you could load mp3 or ogg music files. It was quite an experience playing DM while listening to Metallica and Card Captor Sakura OST.
Best game from my Childhood memories!
Good times. Nice job.
Why do you have 2 TH-cam channels?
The gibbing in UT2004 was rather disappointing imho. Every little piece of meat looks pretty much the same. I'd like to be able to differentiate a severed head from a part of a leg.
how install mod?
Silly question, but is it possible to play online while using the ballistic mod? would be fucking awesome to play online with all those new weapons.
+Juan Maidana I want to say yes but we did not try. I would assume the host/server has to be running it. Although, someone can correct me if I'm wrong.
If somebody ever tried to play the mod with an online server, please let me know.
Hey there! Sgt Kelly here, developer of some of the add-on packs for BW. You can definitely play online, and I think there are actually a few dedicated servers still running Ballistic! Basically just the host needs to run the pack and all the people joining will automatically download it.
We are in the presence of greatness. And good to know.
Well thank you very much for the information, I will definitely consider buying UT 2004 in steam so I can play in that server. (If the steam version is compatible of course).
Top 5 comp fps ever made.
i like your videos alot but i feel like you dont critique the games you review enough
How do i install the balistic weapons mod?
Download the mod, extract the files into the installation directory. We would suggest backing everything up first.
Anyone know if the online is still relatively active?
Noble Luna not entirely sure but even if it is dead the excellent instant action mode is there.
2:32 You’re welcome.
You lose character shadows playing UT2004 in Open GL. D3D even has complex shadows (not just blobs) so looks FAR superior.
What IS better út 1999 or 2004
playing most of the games in the franchise i'd say that 2004 was better because of how many gamemodes and maps there was (not including mods). There is also more weapons and 3 extra characters to unlock (Xan, Malcom and war lord) Xan and Malcom are returning characters from ut99 and to unlock them you have to play the game on a different difficulty if i remember correctly.
If you can, buy both games and play them you will have some great fun.
Which ever you are stuck with.
Whichever you grew up with the most
Perfect 2020
Yup
Fun Fact: This Game was Released The same Year as Godzilla Save the Earth and Alien vs Predator Movie
G-G-G-G-GOD Like!!!
13:38 Oh god lmao!
there is a fun secret , if you have setting NOT at max quality and then set then to max you will hear something ;). also with ligthing sniper (forgot name) if you hit top of head and enemy did not die then he will have head on fire for some time lol. if you kill with similar top of head hit then head will be missing and neck will be on fire
Would you consider it the greatest first person shooter of all-time? I would.
oh god that sexy announcer voice this is what we need in gaming 100%
Also Unreal Tournament 5 WHEN?!
suscrito
Great Game, strange review.
Umm…when comparing screens, that are different; umm, maybe try using the exact same Map/Hallway/Movement Direction.
What do I know…I wasn’t born before the age of redundancy and segue into cliches.
Not that the voice is sexist, just kinda cringe.
