    Making a mock up of the engine mounts is a brilliant idea, I'mma gonna steal that idea! ^_^

      Just made the whole thing feel a bit more real as I don't have the actual boat yet😂

      @@modularhippo Oh? How did you settle on the engine mount size/spacing?

    • @modularhippo
      @modularhippo  21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@TheDigitalMermaid - Please expand on mount size/spacing as not 100% sure what it refers to. The motor rings are 10mm SS thickness and the reason for that thickness was to have at least 10mm thread space for the 4 slider bolts. The space between the two motors in width is only a couple of centimetres. Let me know if I misunderstood you:)

      Hey Magnus - Thank you for the comment and taking an interest. Interesting project indeed:) I suspect that you are Swedish but type in English just in case:) - Dropping of the parts for welding this Friday and expecting the final motor to be delivered end next week so will get another update in as soon as I can with progress. To be continued:)

    I am LOVING the look of this and can't wait to see it develop. Intrigued as the what motor controllers etc you'll be using. I built 'The poor mans electric boat' back in lockdown of 2020. That was on a 36' narrowboat using a forklift truck motor (videos of the build are here on TH-cam) Unfortunately shortly after getting it working I blew the control unit and the project stalled. However the idea is still ticking away in my brain and seeing how your tackling it makes me VERY interested to see how it all works. Looking forward to the next instalment - cant wait to see that frame work set up with motors and pulleys etc.

      Hey, nice to meet you and thank you for the kind words! Only time will tell in relation to this becoming something fit for purpose or not:) Will make sure I cover motors and controllers in the next episode:) Looking forward to check out your videos and work you have done on your narrow boat:) Love the idea of recycling a forklift motor!! Make sure you complete the project as sounds like a brilliant idea.

      @@modularhippo It is looking really good, I have every faith it'll work, I assume your going for 2 x 10kw as opposed to one 20kw so you can keep to 48v? Loving the belt drive idea as well! Unfortunately I sold the boat I started the project on last year (long story as to why - But I have another boat now - a longer 47ft narrowboat). So the project is still possible - just on a different boat to where i started. Looking forward to seeing the controllers etc and getting a vision of the full set up.

      @@WingingItBoatingonaBudget - Correct, I was looking at a single 20Kw but as it meant I would have to use 96v instead of 48v I binned that idea. Later I realised that having two motors also added a redundancy that one motor would not offer. To be continued:)

    Very interesting. I have the same 10kw motor that you show in your second video and I was considering getting a 2nd but I was thinking a dual propeller set-up. What considerations did you make to determine two motors to one prop? -ope nvm. I just read your other comment about the dual motors below. I will stay tuned for where this is headed!

      Hi TornState, Thank you for taking an interest:) I am building a 36' mono-hull in parallel so this is the limitation. If not then having two propellers (each spinning different ways to offset prop-walk) would have been ideal. Also to be able to control each prop individually for additional steering would be really useful. In my case, only one motor did not fill me with confidence if used in headwind and heavy currents. A 20 Kw motor would mean jumping to 96v and that caused other issues for me so decided to try with two motors and stay at 48v.:) - If you are sharing your project online then let me know as interesting to see what you are up to (especially as we have the same motors):) - Also, if any of the parts I have designed is of use then let me know and I will send you the cad files.

      @@modularhippo Yep I am documenting it (poorly) on my channel. It's a foam/epoxy trimaran of my own design. I have to navigate the inland rivers of the USA when I launch it and heavy currents are currently my greatest concern. I am trying to line up a typical gas boat to provide backup when I do my "sea" trials on the Illinois river later this year.

      @@TornState That is awesome! I have subscribed and will definitely check out your videos. Respect for designing your own trimaran. Not sure if you have heard of an Ian Farrier (trimaran designer in Australia) but had the blessing of talking to him before his passing (old age). Very interesting guy and designs worth checking out:)

    There's a download link on your page, is this for the needed info to cut parts ourselves with instructions ? I'm all good paying for that precious info...

      Hi Anthony - I am more than happy for you to use the plans for personal use, but would not feel comfortable if they are intended to be used for commercial use. If for personal use then you are more than welcome to have the CNC files for free. If commercial interest then please let's discuss further. Feel free to provide your contact details and I will email you.

      Hi Anthony - Thank you for showing an interest and for your comment. The setup is not really 'proven' as of yet as allot of the ideas are being amended and improved as we go along. There is also the water-cooling left to tackle. as well as other bits so let's see how it all comes out in the end:) The short answer is, not much of a product at this stage, but if it comes out well then happy to guide you on the process and share plans etc. Let's stay in contact:)

      @@modularhippo I'm building from scratch a Catamaran to live aboard, I'm pretty close to the point of buying an d installing motors, maybe I could help and share ideas too :) !!! I also have manny questions about how you're going to manage to run and control 2 motors on same shaft,,, One thing is sure, I'm going that direction too...

      @modularhippo  14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@antonygilbert9695 That is amazing, a big project!!:) If a Catamaran I assume you want a motor and drive in each hull. by having different rotations on propellers each side you cancel out any prop walk and can also use the individual motors to also steer the boat. Please expand more on reason for using one prop shaft on Catamaran as not the norm?:)

      @@modularhippo I am anti diesel, can't repair them anyway... As it's for retirement, I want to be able to be safe and be able to fix everything. it's a 38feet Cat that will weight about 18000lbs, I have talked to Dave Parker here on youtube, thenn by email, he has a 44 feet 100% electric Cat, he's my inspiration... I will have 23 solar panels (8 already installed) and maybe a small generator for bad situations... As most people living on their bot are an anchor most of the time, I will be using all that power for a very confortable living... Also building my own dessalinator from plans people shared onn Facebook.. That may interest you too ???
