    Fabulous video -just discovered your channel and will go back and start from the beginning. I’ve got 7-8 old small outboards kicking around and would love to try this. Also my son and I have been tinkering on and off with a small hydroplane (Seaflea actually) build and while I’m enjoying the idea of a little rip snorting 50’s outboard to go with this vintage boat design I think it would be very cool to have an electric option. Battery space will be a challenge in a 9 foot boat but the dream is fun. (We’re also hugely enjoying our first EV - a 2021 MiniCooper SE - and the revelation of electric motive power in that car has me scheming to do more!)

    Very exciting, great stuff.
    I wonder if even weight distribution bow to the stern will improve performance.
    In watching your videos of the outboard and the airboat propulsion the boat noses up at slower speed requiring more effort to get to a plane.
    Have you tried an alternate payload distribution? A tiller extension would be simpler than moving the battery box.

      Yes, a more even weight distribution would be slightly better! However, the hull is so light (only 38kg), so it gets up on plane no problem anyway😃
      That's not to say that we haven't thought about moving the power pack; though we want to keep the cabling and water-cooling hoses as short as possible, so therefore we have decided against it. A tiller extension is actually a good alternative, but not entirely necessary for our short, full throttle journeys over the lake👍😁

    I've been following a fella named Kris Harbor & he did a video on fact checking the motor ratings. Just because the online retailer listing says it doesn't mean the motor can actually put out the power, rpm or torque listed. The wire thickness & winding count are major parts for example of what a motor/generator can do. If the wire can only handle a few amps then there is no way it will reach the output needed by beefier materials. I refer here to some Chinese distributors via Amazon in this example.

      Thanks for your comment, and yes, this is particularly true! There is a lot of junk out there, particularly on Amazon etc. In any case it is paramount to work with quality materials and the best people to make good products. We have found our team in different geographic locations, and the Chinese have proved an amazingly reliable an dhigh quality supplier in these regard.       Hi Anton! Thanks for following along! We have a lot more projects to come so stay tuned!😃Sadly we cannot get the ESC logs to show you this (as discussed @ 12:05 in the video). This has been a problem for long time, pretty much since the "The Mini Electric Airboat on the best ICE!"-video (se 12:40 in that video). We are just as bummed out as you are, but we might be able to show this in some other way in the future 😊 Also, we will be replacing the APD ESC with something new and exciting later on this year! So maybe then we can get some logs from the new setup👍

      @@johndehosson Too bad it can't log data, it seems like a really good ESC otherwise. If you have a clamp multimeter you can measure the current directly from the battery, it will give a rough estimation at least.

      We do in fact have a clamp multimeter, and I believe we have measured it that way once upon a time... However we want "proper" stats🤓😅 Really we just want the numbers that we convey to be (as far as we kan provide) accurate. However we might be able to squeeze something in the next video or two😊 If not using the multimeter, we could screen record the BMS app and then manually plot the wattage.... A lot of work but maybe worth it if you would like to see that!

      As for the mileage, we get roughly 20 kilometers on the water out of this setup, so plenty for us! And considering the motor setup (being built on that old Mariner gearbox), there is certainly more efficiency to be extracted😁

      Considering that you are going for a trolling setup you should be able to get some really good mileage/runtimes. After all that is what is so good with electric, it only draws a certain amount of power at any given time! At trolling speeds our setup draws just a few 100W; and maybe 1-2kW if going a bit faster (but still "trolling speed").

      @@johndehosson I've understand only one thing, I must realize it and test it, because there is more variables, boat, load, wind, sea conditions, etc etc etc
      Is more difficult to find the right setup without more tests

    This is incredible. I want to do this with my square stern canoe, but I'm sure this is way too powerful seeing how it's pushing that boat around. If you don't mind, what size motor would you guess would give a comparable (power to spare but not too much) experience on a small canoe? It's 15ft/4.5m. Thank you!

    Enjoying the videos! Curious how much the system you’ve made weighs, and cost? I have a pedal\padle boat and have thought of putting a trolling motor on it, but would love to make it much faster. I’m an old racer, so I need a fast pedal boat! Lol

    There are alot of choices for bldc motors , the one you have kinda looks like a high rpm motor I wonder if a slower rpm motor like for a emotorcycle would run with less heat ?

      @jacobclark89 Great thoughts! The rpms don't have too much to do with the heat generated in this case. It is more to do with the small size of the motor and the amount of work it needs to do with it's accumulated inefficiencies, that produce heat. Higher voltage could be more helpful in some systems, which lowers amperage, and heat build up. But in this case, a larger motor, higher voltage, and less amperage would be the fastest way to a more desirable outcome. Thanks for hanging abnout! /John

    Hi Guys! Thanks a lot for the videos. Good starting point of my project to convert an old motor to a new. I watched all your videos and missed the info what made you end up with battery voltage you have chosen. Is the 24s a common practice? Why didnt you go higher/lower? The motor seems to be able to handle up to 100v.

      We chose the higher voltage for a number of reasons, primarily system efficiency, but we also wanted to do a few craxy rpm runs 😅. More voltage, more rpms, more craziness! But in saying that, we don't run that hard all the time, because it just wrecks stuff, and we don't sort of have a budget for that!😅

      The battery we used for this setup was a 24s, 86V battery that dad built himself. It uses LiPO cells, since they can output the most amps relative to their size and weight. You will find more information about the battery here: th-cam.com/video/C6OEzgNDZto/w-d-xo.html
      We also have a production spec battery that we will be selling on our website very shortly (within a month). I can update you when it's available😊

    Hello! Did you manage to disassemble the motor while moving the shaft to other side? I've got mine all glued and i can't take anything apart. Also it can't be heated. For me its needed because of mounting complications, and for everyone else its necessary to be able to replace bearing at some point in time.

      Yes we have disassembled our motors multiple times, replacing bearings and flipping shafts. It isn't the easiest thing on the planet, but as long as you are careful it isn't a problem.

    Am I right in thinking these are DC motors? If I was wanting to move a 40ft power catamaran and replace say two Yamaha 115HP motors, I'd be looking at an AC motor solution? It's all theoretical at the moment, but I have seen such outboard motors move the catamaran at 11 knots. Someone told me that these motors could probably send the cat along at 20-25 knots if pushed.

    It would probably be useful adding a steering wheel. It's not that difficult to make with pulleys. That's probably a good idea.

    The heat loss is inefficient way to run it, better off getting a motor that is going to run cool at your max power levels, more expense though, basically overrate the motor for the power level you want to run at.
    There are so many different alternatives these days for motors/controllers etc,, must admit its a hell of a nice job you've done on it. Hope it turns out reliable in the long term.

      Agreed, you should "over-spec" pretty much everything if you can. However, our main use case is to get over a 500m stretch of lake, so we can get away with using a smaller, lighter and cheaper motor, and just run it to the max⚡ Since it gets water-cooled of the old impeller, heat actually hasn't been an issue at all, and we can run it at 'cruising' speed for as long as the battery lasts👍
      As for reliability it has been nothing but good to us, and we have run this setup for almost 3 years now. The only issue we have had with it was down to us using 'bad' water-cooling hoses which led to leaks. This led to the bearings destroying themselves, but that was a relatively easy fix👍

      thanks for the detailed replies, I've built alot of electric vehicles over many years, just electric bikes and small three wheelers, I never really moved into esc and outrunner motors, but its all very similar, territoryI very much appreciate and understand the very long process involved in testing and building, you've done an amazing job, and to come up with something reliable is really quite an achievment.@@johndehosson

    I want to drive a 12 inch brass propeller on a 1 inch propshaft. In place of a 15 hp diesel motor, would this motor you have do the job?

    If you have a 10 horsepower lower unit can you put a 20 horsepower electric motor on it

      Sorry for our late reply.
      I would say that it is no problem to use 20hp on a 10hp unit, especially considering that some motors, where produced with the same components, but "locked" to different power levels. For example we had an old 10hp Parsun 4 stroke, that had the internals of a 20 HP. So google your "donor" motor and see what the go is.
      There are of course a few risks with putting more power on a smaller lower unit! Due to electric motors generally producing A LOT more torque then an ICE-engines, and spinning at higher RPMs, you run the risk damaging (probably straight up stripping) the components in the gearbox. This hasn't happened to us, however:
      a) our bottom unit was pretty solid.
      b) we are only running a few more horsepower.

    Encase the motor in oil and be rid of the transfer shaft all together.
    It would be a nacelle on the end of the case.
    The oil conducts the heat and the water takes it away.

      This is why pod motors are so great. And technically most BLDC motors are waterproof in it of themselves, and wouldn't need an oil bath. There is actually another creator here on TH-cam who made a DIY pod motor this way, I will see if I can find the video for you.
      With that said, for most people the way we went about it will be the easiest way to convert their old outboard😊

    To much money I use a car alternator with a household light dimmer switch🤓🤓🤓 $40.00 total.I think it will work with one car battery Ten knots is all I need🤔🤔🤔 with a 100 watt solar panel.With a toggle switch for a charge controller🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

      @@bansheeparadox2678 We've had the motor manufactured to our specs and it is available on our website now together with a controller. The motor will handle a 200mm outboard propeller no problems. it would however be an incorrect choice for an impeller jetpump for many other reasons. In looking around there are some specific motors for jetpumps for electric surfboards, and they will do a much better job and be easier to work with in that application.     Why would someone want to have a electric outboard they cant stay charged very long i live my Yamaha 115 2 stroke

      Hi @MarioGuajardo It does an excellent job at any speed👍I just don't think we've ever managed to capture footage at low speeds, because, well, Jack and I never go slow😂We might try that one day!😂

    well after listening to you, i have decided to stick with the gas engine. Electric outboards are not ready for me. far to complex for a guy who just wants to fish on the weekend.

      You may feel it is to complex to build, however that's why we are working on ready to go kits😊 An electric outboard is perfect for fishing, so don't give up on electric so quickly! Subscribe to see when we publish the kits👍

      He was building one himself. Imagine building a gas outboarder from scratch, is that really easier? You can go electric simply by buying a self-contained electric outboard motor where you only choose the power you want.

      Yes it's much easier, vertical shaft engines liter the place where I live. very cheap and I can find a used drive leg, in fact, I have one in my barn. @@OlafFichtner
