  • My first, and most likely only, attempt to build an inboard electric motor housing/system to host 2 X 10KW BLDC (brushless) water-cooled Golden Motors. The hope is to be able to tap into re-generative possibilities to charge the sailboat Battery bank towards self sustainability and longer periods of off-grid living.

Ya love to see people still using li ion batteries still keep building …looking great 🔋🔋🙌🏾

Something magic about the little 18650s and with then still used in abundance it is hard to keep my hands of them😂 Li-Ion does not have the best reputation or track record but makes it more of a challange:) Part of what I am doing is for my own development (learning my doing) so thought a good staring point:)👍🏻

You really should be wearing a respirator cutting things like that.

@givetanks - You are absolutely right. Luckily no more cutting and hopefully not to much damage done. Protection glasses should have been worn as well. My bad!

Wow, cool set-up. I have a distrust of li-ion after an ebike caught fire while charging on my last boat. I ended up chucking the whole thing overboard, and recovered it once the batteries finished expending their energy. If something does go wrong with your pack, will you be able to get it off the boat quick?

This is my 'secondary' battery bank and a project I started just to get my hands dirty and 'learn the hard way':) - If I ever come to use this pack on the boat I will definitely keep it stored in a place where if a mishap it won't take the boat with it:) The primary bank is based on LiFePO4 prismatic cells which have a far better safety record:) What is your next big project on your boat? Guess that if I keep watching I will find out:)

@@modularhippo Oh, I see, I thought these were going to be for propulsion! I'm a huge fan of LFP batteries, I had them on my last boat and really appreciated how simple and robust they are.
Next projects around here: get the keel back on, and then re-install the mast with brand new rigging. I intend to be west of French Polynesia by this time next year, so my primary focus now is getting safety and structural projects complete.

@@himanakai - Wow, cool place, checked it out on Google. Can fully understand why you are heading in that direction:) - Being from Europe most stories are around Atlantic or the Mediterranean so the Pacific is uncharted territory for me:) - Not started with mast yet but probably be a Selden system or similar. One bolt at a time, working on upper keel bearings as the boat has a swing keel. Will be interesting to check videos for mast as I have some serious knowledge gaps there:)
