  • I did some testing of the stock tires vs Quick Slicks Silicon Tires (CA21F) for the Carrera Porsche 917K.
    I post the lap time results.. Silicon Tires are the real deal.
    Thanks for watching.

    Hi Marty. I have the NSR model of the 917K Double Fin car of Piper/White, in British Racing Green. Fitted with a 20K shark motor, it is reasonably quick, but struggles to keep up with the NSR Porsche 908/3's which come standard with shark 21.5K motor. Great fun to drive & race with. May have to consider upgrading to the larger motor. You have an awesome look layout, and it certainly looks as if it is fun to drive on.

      Mark, thanks. I love my layout. It is a lot of fun, and pretty challenging. I love the 917’s.. I actually have that same car on loan from Area 51 , to see how it performs. I plan to do a video comparing the cars.

    This is just a guess, but I think it's the divot in the rims, some people fill divot with super glue gell then true the rim then glue the tire on the rim then true tire. It will be smooth as glass. Just a guess.

    Our club has a couple 917s, also, and they're definitely a favorite.
    We have to run rubber or urethane. Part of the decision for that is our track is outside. The main reason we can't run silicon slicks is that they **require** a very clean track. Even under the best of conditions, whenever there's a breeze, we get tree pollen all over the track.
    I've found that replacing the axle/aluminum wheels/brass crown gear/brass pinion gear is very productive for reducing noise and increasing smoothness. I think, but can't prove that the plastic gears wear and become noisy. And, as someone below mentioned, stock Carrera axles are generally not all that round.
    Slot Car Corner has a package that is a drop-in replacement for Carrera cars using, iirc, Slot-It parts. The folks at SCC are always good about answering questions.
    If you **really** go down the rabbit hole, you will need to start truing rims & tires. I strongly recommend against truing tires ON THE CAR - that's a sure recipe for blowing up the chips.
    I've made a wiring harness for using an external 12v battery that plugs directly into the Carrera motor connector. This isolates the chip from the electrical loads of truing rims and tires on the car.
    The alternative is a Tire Razor, but I believe they've been out of production for a while. I'm surprised that nobody has produced a good 3D printed version of one.
    Last thought... SlotIt sell "zero grip" front tires, and you can probably find something that will fit your cars.

    • @twolinesslotcars
      @twolinesslotcars  ปีที่แล้ว

      Alan, I really appreciate you taking the time to give such great advice. Yes, a tire truer will be one of the next purchases.. there doesn’t seem to be a lot of choices out there right now. I saw someone had 3D printed one. My brother has experimented with replace the axels on one of his cars but I have yet to go down that path. My 917 is loud, but it is fast. I love driving it.
      Interesting that you set up outside.. I struggle enough keeping my track clean in my basement. I could not imagine outside.

    • @Alanbataar
      @Alanbataar ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@twolinesslotcars The 3D printable versions I've seen have all been copies of the Hudy type of truer: these require aluminum set-screw wheels -- you glue up the wheel, stab the allen driver through the tire, and mount it to the truer. You have to use a digital caliper to get them the same.
      On a Tire Razor type, there are "forks" that engage the brass bearings. You can actually true the rear plastic press-on wheels, tires & axle as an assembly.
      You can also glue up the front wheel, tire & axle assembly.
      Not to mention being able, as mentioned before, true up the plastic rim itself.
      I think this is, literally, the only only solution for people with Carrera & Scalextric cars. At least those who don't want to replace all their rotating assemblies.
      I've been working on designing a 3D printed version, but I'm not a very good designer, unfortunately.
      Ha, yes, the outside set up is fun -- we have the liberty of a HUGE track, but we have to use a leaf blower every time we run, and sometimes after lunch as well. And, we have to take it down from October to March.

    I just got this same #26 917. I really like the look of it, and right outta the box, stock tires, it can be made to go pretty good.
    Its low and flat and can get totally sideways and snap right back in line, it will be the fastest car here once tuned.
    If a person is desperate, Ali Express has these cars, in Gulf Livery, or in white #26.....The gulf might have to be had in evolution and chipped.

    Nice times, Just a word of advise I would not use nail polish on the front tires. They will make the tire hard over time and it will get even noisier. I would use Floor wax like pledge to put on the front tires. How do I know nail polish hardens your tires? I have several of those 917’s and other cars that have Flintstones tires now cause I used nail polish. Only thing I use the nail polish for is for gluing my tires to the wheels.

    • @twolinesslotcars
      @twolinesslotcars  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@heavybrandathletics410 so the theory is.. zero grip front tires.. if the front tire gets traction going into a turn it will cause the rear to drift out.. but if the front tires do not get traction, the rear will track right behind the car.

    If you sand down the rims so there is no indent. It will quiet down the noise. The Carrera tires are thicker and that why you don’t hear it as much.

      I purchased the Piranha Power Motor recommended for Carrera Digital. It is a direct replacement for most but not all Carrera cars. It would not fit into my 917 without doing some modifications. I have tried the motor in all of my other Carrera cars and they immediately become the fastest car on the track.

    Suggestion - Take the rear tires off and fill the "dips" in the hub with gel super glue or ES6000 or other filler, let dry and then sand it smooth. Put the tires back on and see if it is quieter.

    • @twolinesslotcars
      @twolinesslotcars  ปีที่แล้ว

      John, I will give that a try. I am sure it would help quiet the car down. I had put nail polish on the front tires and that creates some of the noise too. I have since removed the nail polish. It helped with noise.

    Mixing silicone and rubber/urethane can be an issue. Rubber and urethane tires lay down a nice layer of rubber on the track and the silicone tires will pick it up and long term running of silicone tires will remove that film on the racing line and your cars with rubber tires will then suffer on their lap times. Best for all cars to have all silicone tires or have all cars with rubber/urethane tires
