It always amazes me that this band was never huge in The States. The Enz were the whole package. Incredible musicianship, vocals and top writing to boot. Thanks for uploading!!
This isn't just a pop song. iIt has sll of the hallmarks of a standard. It stands up beautifully 40 + years on. Thank you to Tim, The Finns for their entire catalouge of timeless misic. 💜
Mine too. I'm 50 now and my mom is gone but I remember watching this live with her on TV in 1980. We both looked at each other and thought "Oh my goodness. That's the best song ever." I still think so.
I'm 47 and I just heard this song on radio sation TripleM while driving home from a supermarket. It was first time I had heard the song in decades. It used to be played alot on radio station 3SR in Shepparton (near where I grew up) when I was little. After hearing it just now, I am absolutely gobsmacked. One of the greatest songs written in the 20th Century, at the very least.
I grew up in Chicago, and I was about 14 or so when I first heard Split Enz . The only station in town that played their music was WXRT . I loved their music from the start. I grew up on the South Side, so finding Enz, U2, Peter Gabriel, the Police, Missing Persons, and David Bowie was like a godsend to me. I didn't know why no one else was up on this music. I just new it was great. Now, as am adult, I am so glad I found them all. Especially Split Enz. Thanks WXRT! Chicago's Finest Rock.
fellow South sider who also grew up on XRT. Sadly music stations these days dont play sides of albums or jazz transfusion or the blues. the older I get the more I enjoy Split Enz as well. they were special.
One of the greatest songs ever written. Awestruck. Its about time someone covered it, to show the world this beauty. Though i don't think they could capture the magnificence of the original.
I've been coming back to this video for more than a decade at least. It's just such an amazing performance. I know it's not for everyone, but there's just something about it.
Tim makes it look so easy! Incredible piece from an under appreciated band of great musicians! They were as incredible live as they were on their recordings!
I'm 29 now, I think I first saw this video 8 or 9 years ago now when I first dove into split enz. the feeling this performance gives me never goes away, it's as if it's the first time watching Everytime
Tim followed up one of Neil's greatest songs (I Got You) with probably his greatest song (this). They were really on a huge roll between about 1979-1982.
So, Neil does one of the best love songs ever... Message To My Girl... And Tim does one of the best break-up songs ever... Did these guys have symmetry or what?
eddie, eddie, EDDIE!!!!! whatta musician! tim is also marvelous in this one. solid vocals! this song has some really difficult vocal melodies and tim hits them effortlessly.
Never thought I'd see this performance again. Been so long I had forgotten about it and only remembered "I Got You" from this episode. Loved "Fridays". Thanks for posting. Don't know how it was recorded but this sure is a good transfer.
a great song, tim finn should be better appreciated in the States. i love the Split Enz ever since the first day of MTV when it was a fantastic channel, revolutionary. i was 14.
I LOVE THIS GROUP! I have the original abum. It's called "True Colours". It's a really GOOD album. It has laser etchings on the black vinyl(cool). I saw this clip when it was originally aired on "Fridays".(Michael Richards starting TV show) Anyway, Split Enz was cool back in the 70's & 80's & they're STILL cool. Check out their videos for "Lovey Dovey", "My Mistake" "Poor Boy" & "Sweet Dreams"
Fridays was an SNL type show but a day early. The guy introducing is a comedian...his first name's Jack but I can't remember his last name...and satin jackets and aviator glasses were all the rage back then ;)
@Hegstuffing the year before, i think. i remember hearing 'i got you' back in 1979 or so... could have been 1980. he'd not been in the band long, though---
@Hegstuffing let's leave the year slightly vague - the important stuff is bloody accurate... that single i heard just bowled me right over! slightly jealous - you got to SEE them!!!
wow, tim nailed v vocal, didn't tink it cld b so gd live, im impressed, also v piano was very gd. maybe btr with no drums?, excellent live musicianship.
This song predated Tim's relationship with Greta Scacchi by several years - they were an item in the mid-80s, around the time Split Enz were splitting up...
Does anybody remember the Crowded House member made fun of his ex band mate Tim in public, on tv. I'll never forget the look on Tim's face "I'm going to kill you bastard". Maybe it was some kind of prank, but the Crowded House member was calling him stuff like "homeless". It was so bizarre.
It always amazes me that this band was never huge in The States. The Enz were the whole package. Incredible musicianship, vocals and top writing to boot.
Thanks for uploading!!
So true unbelievably good band all round
As an African-American fan, I sadly couldn't agree more - for years it has confounded me. The Enz are most absolutely the whole package in every way.
Just discovering them now, here in the states. Where the fuck have I been!?!??? That’s guys we’re incredible! Loving it.
@@justingaribaldi7723 you're on a great journey 😊👍❤️

Tim's finest moment. Up there with the greatest love songs of all time.

Split Enz, my favourite band when I was going to school. How beautiful is the piano playing! Wow. Beautiful voice of Tim too.
that was a most perfect live performance...the likes of which we may never....see again.....but I hope.
sooooo...perfectly put

Oh Chicago I visited there after a famous dj left the Phoenix station
kapi
Ditto, my friend. Grew up in the south side of Chicago too.
fellow South sider who also grew up on XRT. Sadly music stations these days dont play sides of albums or jazz transfusion or the blues. the older I get the more I enjoy Split Enz as well. they were special.

What an awesome song... brings back memories ;)
The singing is great, but that pianist is an absolute treasure! A bloody master!
I've been coming back to this video for more than a decade at least. It's just such an amazing performance. I know it's not for everyone, but there's just something about it.
I also saw them for the very first time on Fridays.
I was 12 and was absolutely dumbstruck.
Now, 30 years later nothing has changed.
Same here. I saw them, fell in LOVE with Neil Finn, and never looked back. I remember that night vividly.
beautiful vocal, beautiful song. They weren't big in the States but one of Eddie Vedder's favourite bands growing up.
top singer love it still in 2023 going on 24
This is one of my Mothers favourite songs . I wish she could come home to visit me .
Hey ... I'm from the States ... and I loved these guys!!! Got me through highschool!😁
I remember seeing this performance live on 'Fridays' back in 1980 at age 18.
Wow so young - What a excellent performance in Auckland 29/03/08!!!!! Love this song!
Tim makes it look so easy! Incredible piece from an under appreciated band of great musicians! They were as incredible live as they were on their recordings!
These guys were so talented! I just wished more people appreciated their music.
Haha loving those bittersweet love/tragedy chords arragements.

Oh my god, this was flawless. Thank you for posting!!!
Spellbinding. Thank you.
Perfect. Magical...I remember watching this and being blow away. Ever since then I have been a huge Split Enz/Crowded House/Neil Finn Fanboy!
This is so fantastic. I loooove this group. One of my faves from the 80's if not my fave

I'm 29 now, I think I first saw this video 8 or 9 years ago now when I first dove into split enz. the feeling this performance gives me never goes away, it's as if it's the first time watching Everytime
Tim Finn, simply beyond compare live x
My favourite Split Enz song.
Tim Finn is perfection ❤️😍
And this is how it all began... 40 years ago... dang it makes me feel old.
Tim followed up one of Neil's greatest songs (I Got You) with probably his greatest song (this). They were really on a huge roll between about 1979-1982.
Wow....that brings back some forgotten memories.
Thanks for sharing!!
Love that piano 🎹 just a masterpiece.
So wonderful
I'm old enough to remember how great you are. Not even two decades of teddy afro and aster worke in Ethiopia can make me forget.............
Amazing song.
Brilliant song, great band, great modest country NZ
I remember watching this on "Fridays." A beautiful song, beautifully performed. Awesome piano playing.
OMFG... a LIVE video of this great Enz song ????? I'm in heaven.
So, Neil does one of the best love songs ever... Message To My Girl... And Tim does one of the best break-up songs ever... Did these guys have symmetry or what?
Just beautiful❤
This really shows off Eddies piano skills.
...and Tim's vocals...
Eddie Rayner is amazing, and was the secret weapon for Enz and CH
Never knew this was an Enz song. Beautiful version.💗
ooooooooooo oooooohhhh Magnifico !!
Like the smirk when Tim's hearing his echo back.
Thanks for the upload. Noice !!
At the Kabuki in San Francisco was a magical night and this song stopped me from being a punk rock snot.
Happiness is back in style!!!
The piano...wooot!
1979/1980 this is awesome....this and don mclean crossroad and the seekers colours of my life....finished with barnsey no second prize.....TOPS!
Beautifully done !
eddie, eddie, EDDIE!!!!! whatta musician!
tim is also marvelous in this one. solid vocals! this song has some really difficult vocal melodies and tim hits them effortlessly.
I remember seeing this on "Fridays". Thought I'd never see it again!!!
Great piano.
Mind blowing.
This made me cry and not much does that to me anymore.
Holy Steinway, Batman! Eddie F**kin' Raynor!
Eddie Rayner is a god amongst other gods in this track
Never thought I'd see this performance again. Been so long I had forgotten about it and only remembered "I Got You" from this episode. Loved "Fridays". Thanks for posting. Don't know how it was recorded but this sure is a good transfer.
amazing going from goofy new wave to a new romantic bend over their time- a fun bunch of guys - but serious musicians all the while
Love them!!! Love this songgggggggggg~
I'm getting them right now!
a great song, tim finn should be better appreciated in the States. i love the Split Enz
ever since the first day of MTV when it was a fantastic channel, revolutionary. i was 14.

A maturing of these talented Split Enz guys and it brings back memories of my teen years, so gorgeous is that song
incredible piano
The Finn Brothers ❤ their songs
Yeah! my like, 3rd cousin is the keyboard guy! woohoo represent =] LOL
Lovely :-)
these guys are my favourite band :P haha this songs in puberty blues
重厚なストリングスが美しいバラード♪一聴した感じは難解なメロディラインなので、ポップミュージックというよりもクラシックを聞いている様な印象も受けました(^^)

Tim Fin was absolutely brilliant. Great vocal range feel. I remember back in high school all the girls just loved Tim Fin.
this song got me through a nasty divorce years ago...beautiful tune, beautiful voice...
I think Tim new what you were on about ( six months in a leaky boat)
How touching you must be proud. Sounds like you really have made some accomplishments.
OMG! I so remember this performance!! I remember thinking that Tim Finn was the most sexiest, the fucking hottest hunk of manhood ever!!
@Hegstuffing
the year before, i think. i remember hearing 'i got you' back in 1979 or so... could have been 1980. he'd not been in the band long, though---
Wow! so proud to be a kiwi!
Super Kiwi band
I hope never, Im losing my voice singing this amazing song during a breakup. Makes me feel better
heaps better than the recording
I love this group. I have the ORIGINAL ALBUM with "I hope I never" & "I got you" on it. It's called
Tim at his best.
@Hegstuffing
let's leave the year slightly vague - the important stuff is bloody accurate... that single i heard just bowled me right over!
slightly jealous - you got to SEE them!!!
Yes Tim...
wow, tim nailed v vocal, didn't tink it cld b so gd live, im impressed, also v piano was very gd. maybe btr with no drums?, excellent live musicianship.
I think the guys last name is Burns. He was part of a comedy duo of Burns and Schrieber (sp?) back in the 60's that I remember.
not a dry pair of knickers in the house
Where is that new town , where the people are nice 😢
He ( Ediie) really makes the band, musically
The lady in the audience at 4:24 is a "10". Beautiful smile, slightly naughty....
Brilliantly- camp drama...
What the heck is the piano player sitting on?...a five gallon paint bucket?...LOL!
The keyboardist is sitting on a spackle bucket!!
This song predated Tim's relationship with Greta Scacchi by several years - they were an item in the mid-80s, around the time Split Enz were splitting up...

The guy introducing split enz, tell me he's a parody?
