Sometimes it's just a little tricky to replace a simple 10" wheel from a hand truck, dolly, generator, pressure washer, etc. There are several types of one-way or pressed on keepers, and maybe this will help you with your problem.
I used locking pliers, lubricant, a hammer and a 17mm socket to get this job done. Also, the axle was 5/8", I accidentally called it 5/16" Haha...

I did not have big locking pliers so I whacked the back of wheels with rubber mallet until it moved a little. Then I used big 90 degree needle nose pliers under 5hat crimped lock washer thingey snd wuggked it under all around until popped off. Washers not damaged but did not lock when applied, even after whacking it on with socket. I took them off and turned upside down and gently whacked with rubber mallet. That did the trick. TY fir your vidro. I am a 61 year old lady with Multiple Sclerosis and I was able to do it.
Fantastic, I’m so glad to hear it! Good job
THANK YOU!! I am a 63 y/o woman and did this myself!
I knew you could! Very 👍 good! Thanks for your comment
Just finished adding my new tubeless tires to my hand truck. I will never have to deal with flat tires again. I knew to use a socket to reinstall the retaining ring, but using the vice (or vise) grips made the job easy. Thanks!
Glad to hear it!
Thank you, Swapped mine in about 5-10 minutes after watching your video! Fantastic Idea about the socket!
Excellent!
Thanks Barry, swapped my wheels in 10 minutes after watching this. Great idea with the socket to put the ring back on.
YES!!! 10 minutes and done! So appreciate this video. TH-cam!!!
Thank you! After struggling on and off for days, I replaced two wheels in 10 minutes following your video. Didn't even need the WD-40!
Great! Thanks for letting me know
I should’ve known it was that easy! Lol 😂 fought my own logic, and the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Decided to check the University of TH-cam. Found your video. Thank you kind sir! Don’t know why I doubted God! 😢
Excellent!
Amen and praises be!
Great u save my day❤
A big thank you for this video! Less than 5 minutes to change the dry-rotted tires. Helluva lot cheaper than buying a whole new truck, too!
Great! Glad it helped!
This worked like a charm, thanks. Couldn’t figure out how to get that crimp washer thing off.
Get!
Great !
This helped me tonight; I replaced the tires on mines, and while it took a little elbow grease along with the WD-40, it all worked out. Thank You for the video!
Great news! Thanks for your comment.
Who knew you were posting the answer to my nightmare! Thank you!
i just used one of those small blue ity bity baby crowbars 2wrk around either rim rings...came off just fine (& they where as rusted as u had show-n on urs)......& tnks 4 makin vid cuz i was bout 2take tha whole axle off...lol...
Very good! Glad it helped you out. Thanks
I would have been very confused if I hadn't watched this video first, wasn't expecting that ring (and was heading out to do this in an area with very little light). On my way out the door I did a quick TH-cam search, watched your video and instead of a lot of frustration, it was a very quick job and the socket to reattach quickly was a great suggestion. (As was the WD40 and refilling the tires) Thank you!
Thank James - glad it helped!
Thank you! Had already spent nearly 1 hr pulling old tire and tubes from existing rims. Went to Harbor Freight and they only had complete assemblies for $8 ea. this video helped a lot.
Glad to hear it!
Great video! Thank you for such a well done yet short video. Your tips about the WD-40 to get it off and using a socket to get it back saved me so much time and frustration!
Fantastic I’m glad it helped!
After reading the comments I see I am not alone in how to remove the retaining ring. Thanks for your video
Glad it helped
I like the tip on flattening and riding the compression washers
thanks
Hi • I have worked in a grocery store for many years • we use a claw hammer or crowbar to pop off the push nut 🚂
Great tip!
I have the exact same dolly, wheels and tires looked the same. Thanks for the video.
Glad it helped! 👍🏻
No wonder my wheel doesn't stay on, the washer is gone! Was about to throw it away but a new hand truck costs $100+. Thanks 4 the vid!
Great, glad to help
@@BarryTsGarage Actually, where can I find that washer with teeth? I couldn't find it on Home Depot or ebay. Thanks!
I can’t promise you but my first guess would be a hardware store like Ace or true value
The socket idea over the shaft to get that retaining washer (whatever its called) back on is a great idea. Thanks Barry.
🙏🙏
This really was the way! Thanks a lot. The pressed washer was also rusted on. Hitting it with WD-40 loosened it, and the vice grips warped the washer so that it broke its hold on the axle (I heard a crack as the rust separated) and I could reuse mine as well.
I’m also going to harbor freight for the cheap wheels:-) thanks!
I’m glad it helped - good work!
After buying two solid tires & rims as a package online, I too don’t have to put air in the tires on my hand truck anymore ! 😃👍❤️🙏
A Dremel tool is ideal for removing the rusted on nut. I use small pipe clamps to cinch them around the axle after tire/wheel replacement. Ya can also drill a hole through the axle, and use a cotter pin 📌, to hold the tire/wheel assembly on. Your friend, Jeff.
Thanks for the idea - I can see that would work, too!
This is the easiest and best way to do this job. Thanks Barry.
I appreciate it, Robert
Thank you so much! This worked perfectly (Channel Locks and 3-1 oil). New wheels..good to go. Thank you for taking the time to make this video!
You are welcome!
How wonderful! The struggle has been real!! My tires are beyond ready to be swapped out and I just needed your advice all this time! Thank for the tips!
Glad it helped!
Great Video. I had no idea how to begin to get that thing off there. After spraying on the WD-40 I just started hammering with a metal hammer on the backside pushing the whole rim which was pushing the washer.. Bent the washer on the backside, but that's no big deal. The main washer on the outside that I wanted to save came out nice and flat and smooth . It did go rolling across the patio fortunately it didn't go far . I would recommend a little catch area for the washer. Thanks again. Great video
Thanks 👍
Thanks Barry! I was trying to pry the nut off to no avail. Gonna give your method a go. BTW, that axle is 5/8", not 5/16", but I used a caliper on mine so I could get the right-sized replacement nut. Half-an-hour in the hardware section and no luck 😒
You are correct - I misspoke - yes 5/8 for sure! Let me know how it goes!
Great video! I just bought new wheels and tires for my dolly yesterday and I'm going to install them today. 👍👍
👍👍
My wheels are swapped and the unit is ready to haul!
Fantastic
Great video ! My husband is trying this out right now !
Good. Alright. I'll go right out and give it a shot. I was just trying to get it off when I thought, maybe someone else has already dealt with this problem. That's funny. I just finished watching your video. I just got back from Harbor Freight where I bought the same exact wheels. I think they were $8.25 each or so. Thanks for your help.
Great Jim, let me know how it goes for you!
@@BarryTsGarage It went great Barry. Tomorrow I'll go to Lowe's and see if I can't find some 4" front casters for the hand truck. Then it will be like brand new. Thanks again.
Worked like a champ after I tried doing it the wrong way
Awesome
Saved me a ton of time! THANKS!!!
Fantastic
You're a saint... Thank you, quick easy and to the point!
Glad it helped!
Great video! I was stumped until I viewed your video. Thank you!
So glad it helped you
Amazing Barry! Worked like a charm. THANKS
Thank you this saved a few hours of figuring out it what tools to use
Glad it helped
I was able to wedge A small pry bar under the press ring and apply counter pressure to slowly pry it up and off. Thanks for the vid and inspiration to DIY
Glad I could help!
I just bought a dolly from an estate sale and the wheels aren’t too great so I may need to try this!
You should!
Wheels are cheap at Harbor Freight, so cheap I could not afford to put a tube in my old wheel, not worth the hassle.
What size its that axle? Im trying to buy a new push nut for a pressure washing and seems to be the same size.
Thanks Barry! I'm gonna try it right now!
Thank you so much for posting this, I've been dealing with the same issue for days, thanks to you, now I know what to do.
Great!!
Couldn’t get a hold of the clip so got a hammer and hit the rim from the back. Popped right off. Clip will fly off though so be careful.
Worked like a champ! Saved me time and $$. Thanks, BarryT!!
Great!!
Cool, it worked! Never would've thought of that myself.
Glad I could help!
This video has helped me twice. Thank you sir.
Glad to hear it! Thanks for the encouragement
My dolly has pins holding the wheels on, but this was interesting! Will add it to my Brain of knowledge, and was hoping you would use a socket to reinstall the retaining washer. Thanks.
Hey hey! What type of pins were holding your wheels? I’ve broken the retainer clips (like the ones in this video) and I can’t find them at the store. I need a substitution. 🤦🏽♂️
@@johnathannnnn Mine have cotter pins. The rod or axle has holes for the pin. I think it might be hard to drill them, but am not sure. This is the way mine came from brand new.
@@unclemarksdiyauto Ohhh man, that makes so much sense now. thank you for that info!
Working around in a circle with a claw hammer worked for me. Used thin fogging oil besides penetrating oil.
HF wheels are only 2-ply with a 300lb. capacity.
Going to try Hi-Run CT 1009 wheels. They are 4-ply with a 400lb capacity - original tire specs and tread.
5/8" hole and 2" bearing length. Walma** and HD have them by order.
Very good!
$16 wheels compared to $5 at harbor freight
Sounds like they could be worth it.
Cool video. I couldn’t find my Vice grips, but I figured out you can also use a cat claw to remove that lock circle.
Very good!
Thank you. I have the same exact hand truck and this video was very helpful 👍
Excellent!
This is the way!
Haha! Love that
Amazing work man, keep the good work !
Thanks, will do!
Thank so much Barry!
You are very welcome
Great video. Worked perfectly. Thank you.
Thank you for the kind comment
You are a life saver!
I am about to do this for the first time. Wish me luck!
Let me know how it goes
@@BarryTsGarage I struggled and gave up, lol. Durn things beat me 1-0 today.
Too bad. Oh well…
@@BarryTsGarage UPDATE: a friend came over and pried those potatoes off and put my shiny new wheels on for me. Turns out I wasn’t strong enough. He said it took all his strength and he had to put it on the ground and use leverage.
worked like a charm! Thanks
Great!
Life saver!! Thx Barry
Glad it helped, thanks!
Very helpful! THANK YOU!
Glad it was helpful!
Worked like a charm! Thanks buddy! 👍
Glad to hear it, Rick. Thanks!
I can't believe I'm a bout to use that rusty 20 year old potato chip to lock my new wheels on lol
🤣🤣
Bingo. That didn't take very long. Great video. It really helped.
Fantastic
Makes replacing the wheel practical.
Thanks
Helped a lot. Thanks
Great!
Thanks Barry you helped me a lot
appreciate your video 😇
That’s great, thank you for the feedback, Bill!
Thank you for posting this it, worked exactly the way you instructed!
Great video! Worked flawlessly
Glad it helped!
Super helpful, thanks for breaking that down!
Glad it was helpful!
You did a great job of reusing the retainer ring, those give the impression they can’t be reused! Well done!
Thank you so much that was the easiest thing I did all week
Glad to hear it!
NICE!! TY.
Great job, learn it from you
👍👍
Mine was so rusted it looked like a solid cap. This worked really well but my retainer just snapped. I found an 8 pack on Amazon. I'll probably go check my local hardware stores first though.
Good work, it’s always satisfying to figure it out and get it fixed. Thanks for chiming in!
you should probably get a tripod for that camera of yours. good info but I became seasick
Done. I wish I could go back in time and re-post. Hopefully the idea gets across anyway. Thanks for watching.
Thanks! I couldn’t figure out why I couldn’t easily remove wheel after taking off cotter pin…
Glad I could help!
Thank you for this! Simple stuff once you know how.
I agree - true so often
Drill axle for pin, then washers, and back together afterward.
If you are able, would be a good idea. (Not every DIYer can easily drill a hole into a round rod)
Very useful! Thank you!!!
You’re welcome - glad I could help
Thank you
Fantastic video, thank you! 👍
🙏
good video instruction! the only negative is the blurriness for the 1/3 of the video ....
True. I’ve learned a lot since then but can’t fix it!
My Milwaukee 10” tire from HD came with a new clamping washer, but I’m having trouble installing. Socket and hammer is where I’ll go next. Wish there was a specific purpose tool that I could buy to use just the one time. lol.
I encourage the socket and hammer method….
Thank you for the video! Worked perfectly
Thanks for the positive feedback and thanks for watching!
Thank you!!!! Just what I needed!!!
Great!
Thank you for the info! Love TH-cam to learn how to fix anything!!
Happy to help!
Thank you it worked for me!
Great - thanks for letting me know
You can get replacements pretty cheaply at most hardware stores too.
Good point!
Thanks for the video.
You are welcome!
Thnx for Vid and link to parts. Very helpful
Great!
Be a good idea to get some spare press nuts/washers before you do this, in the likely event you break one taking it off.
Wouldn’t hurt
what would Home Depot call the press nuts/washers? I'd like to get them in advance.
Great tip on the channel-locks!! A++
Thanks for the comment, Brandon
5/16 axel x 2 = 5/8
Yes I goofed up! Thanks
Thank you for this
You’re welcome!
Thanks
👍
Awesome. Thanks a bunche.
You're welcome!
Thank you! Stupid press on washers!
Thank you for the video, great stuff!! :) Quick question: The tire you installed has a valve stem (tube). The link to Amazon has a solid rubber tire with no valve stem (obviously). Do you recommend tube or solid tire? Thank you! :)
I have been disappointed with leaky tubes and now feel that unless you absolutely need the cushion, I would stay with solid rubber in the future.
Have a great day
@@BarryTsGarage You too! Thank you! :)
Had no idea this was how it’s done!
Happy to help!
I bought almost the same replacement wheels from Harbor Freight. Less than 2 years of minimal use and one of the wheels is leaking air from the rim welds.
No tube?
@@BarryTsGarage It does say “rating tube type” on the side wall so I’m guessing it has a tube that punctured by just sitting mostly. I might try some sealant before replacing. I don’t want hassle with replacing the tube if possible.
@@jaymez858 I get it. These things can be a hassle!
Mine is a cotterpin design. I've got the pins out but the wheel seems to be rusted in place! Any ideas other than hitting it with stuff?
Have you tried a good penetrating oil, letting it soak?
Last resort, heat it with a little propane torch.
Thanks for the video 😁
Thanks for the feedback!
Mine has some type of weird looking pin through the axel, not sure how I’ll be able to remove it in such a small area
Could it be a cotter pin type thing that you can straighten out on one side and pull out through the other way?
Some needle nose pliers will do the trick.I’ve got the same style just pull up and when you put it in the small hole and bend the two prongs back on each side and your done my rim are made out of zink so I polished them up to a shine ✨
