  • While virtual reality attempts to mimic every part of the real world, we show why perfectly recreating it might not be the best solution for everyone.
    Robert is a 3rd year PhD candidate in the Electrical Engineering Department at Stanford University, advised by Professor Gordon Wetzstein. His research interests lie at the intersection of computational displays and human physiology with a specific focus on virtual and augmented reality systems. He is specifically interested in the vergence-accommodation and visual-vestibular conflicts present in current VR and AR displays. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from the ECE department at the University of Toronto in 2014, and his Master’s Degree from the EE Department at Stanford University in 2016.
    This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

    as an oculus owner, I can tell you, even in this basic stage it will be the future.
    There will be a point when people spend 95% of their time in VR most likely.

      and I thing you may have some big wishful thinking..I bet U would like to see all people as brainwashed morons hooked up on the new VR drug but I see a different progress at the moment..and a different future in the world

      Unfortunately, I can imagine it as well. It could raise a whole lot of new problems especially fitness related if we're not prepared. Who could imagine 30 years ago how attached we would be to our devices? maybe the Eagles had it right after all; "we are all just prisoners here of our own device."

      I totally agree! This is actually the future where the poor and despondent will be able to live in a world where they will be able to live their wildest dreams without having to deal with the pressures and cares of the real world.
      I can also see this being an alternative to prison...

    This assumption we have that the "real world" of our perception is somehow significantly less virtual than what we call "virtual reality" is so strong that even VR engineers talk about it as such. The visual cortex is a virtual modeling system that creates a best guess. We already live in virtual reality, which is why VR works in the first place.

    Never used it except for a quick glance through the glasses at a store, i dont need it ,...ever. its not necessary at all. If your a gamer, tech person, or job related ok, but not as a "new thing". Here is an example as soon as my last kid turns 18, my cell phone is gone, computer that i dont use anyway- gone, i cant wait its gonna be soooo fun with no tech. around. I only got my first computer, a laptop, in 2013 only to use it as a portable tv.

      VR will be the future of learning...I can immagine a surgeon that practice surgery procedures in a virtual reality. Training in a safe environment is a plus. But i know this technology needs of 5-10 years of development to make an impact in our society...but it is not impossible, we have to think about smartphones and social media.

    Will we be able to feel everything we feel in real life? Like our 5 senses?

    • @mashy6126
      @mashy6126 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Using full-dive VR probably, we can manipulate our senses to think they smell something or touch something they do not, possibly we could even control our nerves at impact points for pain, but that's going a bit too far ahha. I mean the whole reason we feel pain is because our nerves send a warning to our brain that our body is being damaged, and that pain is the signal, so being able to manipulate our nerves/brain in that sense could actually happen, but as real as vr games get, I don't think anyone does want to feel getting shot or a sword through the chest lol

    • @mashy6126

      @@melissaschmitz3705 I have seen it. and have seen test suits like the ones you speak of, probably definitely the first, and closest version of "Full dive VR" we'll get to in near years, definitely sounds exciting. Though then again, there are a lot of factors to factor in as well that may postpone any public releases even if it is created, I believe at least.

    • @MW-sw7so
      @MW-sw7so 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SilkenLuna right. So they should design Society both ways that way people that don't need it or don't want it don't have to have it it shouldn't make it to where you have to have kind of weird stuff like that to just even get by in life cuz if they have the technology to do that they have the technology to make it both ways and if something ever happens wouldn't she want the original type still around so you can start over again but like you said I know half the people in the world think it's cool I mean say if you put it on and play a video game fine but I don't know I'm just not interested but that's just me like you said no harm meant😁✌☮

      What makes this reality real in the first place. For us reality is just stimuli that is fed through our senses.

      Go ahead and enlighten us. We are most likely not even at the base reality right now, we simply can't prove it, because you can never disprove a reality by itself. But looking at our progress in technology and VR, the reality layer above us made the same steps. And in this reality, it will come soon. And I am ready. Why stay in a reality with alot of problems and boundaries, when you can live to the fullest in a virtual world. Or simply, the next layer.

      You are completely correct. I own a Vive and psvr for quite a while and I play or create content often. Taking off a headset after many hours of play now leaves me completely confused. I can't figure out which reality I am now in, even at this present moment.
      In fact, things have gotten so bad that I have scheduled a surgery next month to correct my terrifying dilemma. Granted the surgeon isnt an actual doctor but he is the only one that understands. I plan on having my vive grafted to my face and I will play steam VR games 24/7 so that I can get back to the real reality. You cannot convince me that I am wrong.
      I now know what's real and no one will stop me as this is my right to experience reality. I understand that this means I must sleep in the VR world, also using the bathroom will eventually cause an issue but I am tired of living a lie and I am sure my girl will understand. Good bye cruel and unreal world!

      What makes reality so great? Many people are lonely, bullied, and hated in the real world. This is a chance to make them happy and feel special
