The 3 Rules for Drawing Rubberhose Style Characters

- I'm back, and today I'm talking to you about rubberhose characters and how to illustrate them. I've been lucky enough to draw a few of these styled characters for clients, and always enjoy working on them. They're fun, bouncy, and you can't help but smile when you're sketching them.
I'll show you some tips and tricks I've picked up along the years to make these look convincing, and show you how to make yours equally successful.
There is a combination of pencil skills and vector skills required to make these, so make sure you have some time free to practice both.

I never knew this style had a name
Yeah! I believe the name comes from way all the legs and arms look as bendy as a rubber hose. If you're interested, check out Max Fleischer's incredible work. Also worth checking out the Superman series he did, which is very different from what he's known for, but equally wonderful.
Me too! I've been in love with this style and been calling it disney old style of drawing, just knowing the name have helped find way more content about it
Well now u know!
This is the most underrated video I have ever seen in my life
Hahahah this is the best comment I've received so far, thank you. Next video coming in 2 weeks, stick around for it!
Awesome tips! Rubberhose characters are so charming.
Thanks Micah. Just had a look at your videos - awesome work.
really instructive video. Haven´t found this rules anywhere else
Glad you enjoyed it! I called them rules which makes it sound like you HAVE to do them, but they're just the things that I think work best when designing like this.
I was actually thinking of doing character illustration in for this style and you're so on time. This was honestly very much educating. thank you so much ✨. Please keep up the good work and more tuts on such style.
Hahah great! Glad the timing worked out. I might make a video on some of the other pieces I've done like this, and show how I used the style to create some other characters.
Man, as a beginner illustrator I want to tell you that this video helped me a lot. Thank you so much!
I can't tell you how happy that makes me to hear! Good luck on your illustration path. Feel free to send me some of your work for review if you're ever open to it ending up in a video.

Hey thanks Jon! That's super kind of you to say. I've totally slacked off from making any new videos lately, but it seems like people like illustration - so expect a new one in the next week or so!
Really good advice
Thank you! Glad you found it helpful.
Wow very nice Video keep making Videos!
I really appreciate you watching, and because you asked, I will!
Do you know of any resources to learn the basics of rubberhose character design (skillshare, books, etc.). Like to learn how to draw the hands, feet.
The best way is to study the original source material. Look at things like Betty Boop, or anything the Fleischer's created.
Ahh I found my people
