BTW, one niche card that would be good for this deck is Cellar Door. A 2-mana colorless artifact. Pay 3 mana and tap it to put the _bottom_ card of target player's library into their graveyard, and if it's a creature, you get a 2/2 black zombie. Guess where all your dead nontoken Insects are going? _The bottom of your library!_ You can put them straight back in the graveyard with Cellar Door so you can cast them again.
Grist doesn't trigger Zask when she dies, because on the field she is just a Planeswalker. So you can cast her from your graveyard again right after she ends up in there, because in your graveyard, and on the stack (this is relevant) she is an Insect again. It's neat that she isn't put on the bottom of your library by Zask.
@@steveallen590 Zask's second ability begins: "Whenever another Insect you control dies, ...". Here, an "Insect" means an Insect permanent on the battlefield (C.R. 109.2), so what is relevant is whether Grist was an Insect permanent on the battlefield - which it usually won't be.
THANK YOU so much for this deck tech, Insects are my favorite tribe and when I first learned of Zask I was so happy. I like the direction you took in building this and i plan on doing the same, i have a binder FULL of insect cards so im off to a great start. YOU ROCK!! 🙂

I think you are drastically underpowering your deck by avoiding the exploitability of Zask's Crucible of Worlds effect. Golgari, Abzan, Sultai, and even Grixis reanimation strategies all have entire deck strategies dedicated to Crucible. This is the first Commander ever to have the effect. Muldrotha was close but limited to just one land/turn. Self-mill + Crucible - especially all in one - means you want additional land play abilities (Azusa, Oracle, Wayward, etc.). It also means you want landfall and it also means you want to more heavily focus on your land choices. Lands are not just mana sources in this deck but a toolbox. Every land with a sac ability is now reusable. This includes fetch lands - which, incidentally, are all the shuffle you need (you don't need to spend slots on shuffle effects). Lands like Buried Ruin, your threshold Lands (Cabal Pit and Centaur Garden), your other draw Lands (e.g. Roadside Reliquary), ramp lands like Myriad Landscape and the Lotus lands all offer tremendous value when you can replay the sacred lands (all the more so when you can play multiple/turn). This gets really disgusting with all the strip Mine lands. By not focusing more on Zask's Crucible effect, I think you are missing out on 50% of his power.
I think that’s a fair point. Lands from the grave are very powerful but I didn’t want it to be a all in lands deck. If. I wanted to make a golgari lands matter deck, wouldn’t gitrog be the better choice? There are so many ways for lands from graves to enter now like ramanump excavator, conduit of worlds, greenwarden, crucible itself, the 2/7 from brothers war idk the name of, etc. I think having that ability in a commander is good but not enough to warrant it to be the focal point. Zask at the end of the day is just insect tribal in my opinion and he does synergies with some land effects, but I think he is better suited for bugs
They are releasing allot of new insect support highly recommend you check it out! Amzu, which could be a solid commander by itself however I prefer it to be in the 99 here. Specifically its effect is whenever an insect gets played from the graveyard. It gains counters based on the cmc… incredible! Remember that 5/5 trample and gains 10 counters if you have 10 or more lands? How about a silly 21/21 trample.. or the 7/7 trample that makes insects based on how much dmg it deals? Well.. so on and so on… it’s such a house for the new variation of the deck. Though there is solid support options now as well, like Kraul Whipcracker a 3/2 (insect) that ETB destroy an artifact or enchantment? Super simple.. cost efficient. Oh! How could I forget Rot Farm Mortipede, silly guy with menace and life link because why not and he pumps himself for every card that leaves your graveyard. ((Just to clarify)), the commander states whenever a creature dies ((hits the graveyard it then moves to the bottom of your library)). Then mill 2, so if you went to make that huge life gain turn you can sac your board.. fill up your graveyard for the future and punch someone for an absolute crap tun that has sudo evasion. ((Then you board wipe)) lol pulling you back in the game with life and resetting the battlefield.
When you CAST Canoptek Tomb Sentinel from the graveyard it enters the battlefield from the stack and not from the graveyard so his ability won't trigger
No he for sure still triggers when you play him with Zask. You just cast him from the grave using zasks ability, he enters, he pops something. Cards can’t enter from the stack like that. I know what you mean but if that were the case, no reanimate deck would work
