    Good video! This is personally why I run motul xcess 5w40 as it doesn’t break down viscosity as fast. Also from my readings the x clean was designed more for new euro emissions over the xcess which has better protection. I also used to have a sponsorship from Puröl which claims to have good amounts of zinc

    Do you have a playlist for the oil test? I would love to see everything that you have done and/or are doing! It would also be nice to know what filter you use. Can you test Amsoil Signature Series!? I am also surprised you aren't doing the same thing for your diffs. Maybe also a test on gear lube. Amsoil also makes a 100% for diffs that work pretty well. Love the video tho.

    10:20 "Molybdenum" is actually an anti wear additive used in oils.. sometimes referred to as a friction modifier, "Boron" is also used as an anti wear additive. Oils like Motul and Amsoil are labeled as 100% synthetic base oil seem to have better lubrication properties and don't need higher amounts of Molybdenum but additive packages will vary across all oil brands. But you will surely find these 2 elements in brand new oils before they're ever ran inside an engine.

  • @Mehaffeyj
    @Mehaffeyj 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Being that Motul XClean is a high detergent lower Kinetic Viscosity oil I would attribute the slightly higher Elements as a result of the higher flow rates “washing” deposits from older oil intervals. I would be more excited about the drastic drops in the higher friction areas of the motor remember the valve spring cycle more frequently than the crank shaft, the piston rings are the sacrificial element and they were less sacrificed.

    Most of the top synthetic brands are pretty decent, but Amsoil and Pennzoil Ultra Platinum are the best and have seen test after test of those coming #1 #2. They even have Ultra Platinum that is especially formulated for SRTs, and is what I run in my Challenger. What's good for a big V8, isn't always going to be the same as with a high-revving Japanese engine and may do better with Castro or one of the others

      A year late on this one but whatever. I've gone pretty deep down the rabbit hole on oil research, coming to the same conclusion. If you just want a quality full synthetic motor oil, most of the big brands are great and virtually indistinguishable from one another (Mobil 1, Castrol, Valvoline, Motul, Royal Purple, Penzoil, etc) at a functional level. They have comparable additive packages, impurity levels, similar breakdown, resistance to heat, viscosity under designed temperatures, and so on and so forth -regardless of what the labels say. You're really just paying for your brand loyalty and what colors you've got on the box. However if you want to go all the way on oil and get the best possible,you want Amsoil Signature Series full synthetic as your #1 choice, with Penzoil *Ultra* Platinum full synthetic at a close second.
      I went with the Penzoil Ultra Platinum since you can get it five quarts for $33 from Walmart most of the time, where Amsoil's offering is quite literally $18 per quart at time of writing. Being able to change the oil every 3000 will make for a happier engine than much more expensive oil every 5k.

    • @erinericsson
      @erinericsson ปีที่แล้ว

      👍🏻Oils have number ratings for a reason. So it doesn't matter if they use Penzoil ultra platinum in the SRT V8s. They run higher numbered oils, than a small Japanese V6 or I4.

    I’ve got a 19 STi, bought new and I use Schaeffer’s Supreme 9000 5w-40. I’ve sent a few samples over to Black Stone Labs and all have come back exceptionally well with them suggesting an 8,000mi interval. I’ve only went as far as 6,000 for testing purposes but yet change my oil regularly at 3,000mi. Not sure how much the oil filter attributes to the testing but I use the Mazda oil filter. As well, from what I have seen with the Motul 8100 line.... I’ve seen people say the 8100 X-Clean 5w-30 is best used in n the FA20 and the Motul 8100 X-Cess 5w-40 be used in the EJ25. Maybe something to look into.

      Diesel oil has much more detergent elements in it like zinc, so it will plug up a cat but is really good in gas engines without the cat. Lots of motorcycle guys run it too. Way higher sheer temp, you'll notice your oil will come out amber instead of black when you change it.

      Smeedia Meh as long as your expecting it. I thought I’d be one of the lucky ones because I had every supporting mod money could buy along with changing my oil every 2k miles. It really seems to have to do with luck when it comes to crank bearings and a good tune to avoid ringland failure IMO. Hopefully your one of the lucky ones. I recommend if you do go and build your motor try to scavenge up enough money to do the heads as well. I did just some mild bc272 cams, gsc valve train, and some pocket porting and it makes a huge difference up top. Best of luck and keep up the great content!

    • @Smeedia
      @Smeedia  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was talking to my tuner about this also and it all seems to be luck of the draw with the 257s. When the motor does let go, gling to buy a IAG block and machine and build the heads valves, springs and cams essentially. When the car qas on the dyno we pretty much maxed the OE Cams out

    Oil companies gotta love you 😍 , given how frequently you change oil! Oil life and contamination also relies on the quality of filter in addition to oil temperature, fuel type, A/F ratio, engine internal health and driving style ( 🔥 or 🐇) as you explained. Well done. Are you using the OEM filter or the more expensive STI filter; it's $$$$ at about 5 times the regular OEM. Curious are you going to test Subaru OEM oil? It is a full synthetic. Last but not least oil cooler addition might also help out too; cheaper than a new short block.

    My red flag is for this oil is 1/3 less miles, more wear indicators, they did not recommend extending service, while they suggested easily increasing change interval by 50% of the Castrol.
    If I want to be kind to motul, it was the 'clean' version, and maybe it cleaned stuff ... but nah :)
    My desire is to test mobil 1 extended performance high mileage.
    The fuel in oil is usually from excessive idling, short trips, many cold starts. If you get an hour highway drive a time or few a week will burn off the fuel contaminants.
    Guess this is sidelined with all the engines getting pulled in your garage :p

      i know this is an old ass comment but i wanted to pitch in and say that if your oil looks like new or anything close to new when you drain it for your normal interval oil changes, it's not a good oil. oil color doesn't mean everything, but if it's coming back completely clean, it's not doing its job. it's supposed to absorb contaminants so it can transfer it into the oil filter.

So i tried the 5w30xclean this time around and noticed that at about 2k ive already went through like a qt which has me kinda worried. So im thinking ill just switch back to the oem until i can find another brand to try. I havnt sent a sample out yet because i ended up topping her off with some shell oil or mobil 1 until i change it again. Anyways going to grab an aos asap and just wonderin what your thoughts are like maybe my car just doesnt like that oil? Lol. I live in new england and its just starting to get really cold . I got a 30k service comin up soon thats covered so ima have em check it out than but obv warrentywise they could give me issues. Well Subaru actually recommend 5/30 full Synthetic as per the manual for the EJ25 5/30 GF5, 5w/40 may be used interim but highly recommended to swap back to 5/30, Kd suggest if in doubt you confer with your local dealer if your area is of extreme conditions!
      Oil is always a very emotive subject, imo and experience always refer to your manual, brand is always subjective, the rec SAE specifications and oil grade is what is important as is the recommend service intervals, we are not chemists or engineers that designed it built the car, neither do I believe in conspiracies to make us buy or replace an engine before it’s time.
      I have had nearly 20 Subis over my time and nearly as many Toyota’s and a few other brands on and off road plus have raced bikes in extreme conditions never had a major issue with a Subi other than one transmission which was an AT and not serviced as required and requested by a Subaru dealer, long story won’t bore anyone with it, they also used a brand of oil I didn’t want in my Turbo EJ at the time which both lead to court action which I came out on top of.
      I will say one thing re oils though and I had a good work mate who drag raced and at that time had used all the top brands and the only engine he never had blow on him was on Mobil 1, this is awhile back now 2000s and things have improved allot since then, again it’s subjective because it’s hard to really know conditions of every variable to compare accuracy, hence always follow rule 1 per manual, I do still use Mobil and never had an issue, but then I also am not heavily modifying my cars or engines, though this channel has me interested thanks as edit in following a similar build possibly.
      Tests are good and interesting, but conditions do vary unless testing 2 engines back to back under same conditions at same hours under same use, ai find it hard to determine if it’s oil type use or conditions that vary, it’s still a good topic and cool to see, I am a fan of motul but it’s hard to get here and expensive, but I wouldn’t choose a cheap oil just on price and engine rebuild is much more expensive than oil, I have this same argument in the dirtbike world yet I don’t suffer than same issues many do, also not sure how good it is to swap brands either on a regular basis, additives do vary and this can upset the stomach of an engine, but like dogs people think they like variety often this is far from the fact they like a stable diet that is the correct one for them. Another topic but similar. Again I’m no oil chemist or car engineer, but I know my experiences and they have stood the test of time, might be boring, but it works, I used to add ProMa to my engine oil buy haven’t done in recent years can’t tell you why never had an issue it was highly recommended again by the drag race team I know it’s a Mitsubishi product but worked for me in all my turbo cars.
      Anyways my 2c fwiw.
