Murray, thanks for another great video. I think I speak for the vast majority of your subscribers in thanking you for not being a ‘gear review’ channel. I’ve subscribed and unsubscribed from several outdoor channel’s, when every other video became a review of their latest bit of kit. I watch because of the person, to follow their adventures, to view the beautiful landscapes and finally to pick up some occasional hints and tips. Keep it coming.
Totally agree about the way new stuff is marketed, and it isn't just cameras and outdoor gear, it is everything from washing powder to shavers! if you believed the ads you'd think the gear we've been using for years has always been utter rubbish, but often the old stuff was/is far superior, and certainly more robust. The whole system is set up to keep us buying stuff we don't really need, and I despise that. I spend so much time literally shouting "liar" at the TV during adverts, which is quite worrying, but very heartfelt. When I started my channel 3-4 years ago I'd hoped to do more outdoor walking type videos, but I quickly found that I couldn't compete with creators like you in quality without spending loads of money that I didn't have. That isn't a criticism of you by the way, you and your channel continue to be an inspiration in so many ways, and gives me my regular fix of the Highlands as I get older and spend less and less time up there. More power to you Murray, keep up the magnificent work :)
Sadly true. I've got a single-burner gas caravan stove that's over 20 years old. About 2 years ago I thought it was about time to replace it, even though it works well. The new one is a well-known brand from a well-known outdoor shop. But it doesn't work very well. Once the gas canisters are about two-thirds empty, the flame drops to almost nothing. I've gone back to using the 20+ years old one.
I don't know a thing about photography Murray, I'm just grateful that you do - nearly as grateful for the sudden improvement in your trouser colour selection! Spending is a personal choice - don't blame 'capitalism' for that, blame our susceptibilities to advertising and desiring the 'next new thing'- however, the practice of some tech companies to deliberately build obsoletion into their products is shameful. You set a great example in your approach to gear, not constantly 'upgrading', buying wisely and getting a decent amount of use from your purchases. It also helps that you view gear as a means to an end, and not as an ends in itself as some TH-camrs do! Got midged just the once on Lewis last week, but they're not too bad yet.
Thanks David - agree with your points for sure - hope you enjoyed Lewis - I am heading there this year for the first time and cannot wait :) Thanks for watching ATB Murray
Another great video Murray. I'm with you on gear. I'm not bothered at all about having this year's colour or style. As long as it works well, am happy to buy items in a sale, plus you often get a better product than what you would do spending the same amount or more on this year's item. Plus, buy quality in the first place and it tends to last longer anyway. Keep the videos coming Murray!! All the best. James.
Absolutely agree - their marketing teams are so good at getting us excited but I am nearly always a little disappointed when I fall for the trap ! Lol Thanks for watching Murray
Well said! I recently updated nearly all of my kit, most of which was 20 years old. Some of the changes were revolutionary. But some of the older stuff was just…better made. And I’ve already upgraded some of the newer stuff which is all but pointless. If it ain’t broke, etc. Also, ‘outdoor gear inflation’ is through the roof the last few years. So often you have to spend a small fortune to genuinely upgrade or even just match 5-10 year old kit which we remember being on the cheaper side when we first bought it. Great videos!
Hi murry, thanks for making awesome videos. They inspired me and a friend to spend 10 days traveling across Scotland and bumping into JERRY on the way up stob dearg. Thanks for the time you put in Rob southampton
Who doesn’t like some shiny new gear? Does the newest model make a big difference, often not. Do we need the newest, biggest, lightest version of what we already have, probably not. Are we still tempted to buy it…..probably. Thanks for sharing!
Good points. I still have a North Face sleeping bag from the mid 1970’s, still looks brand new. My jetboil is the Sol from 2007. But I have newer gear too; it’s a balance.
Hi Murray - been watching for a few years now and I think your film-making and storytelling have come on in leaps and bounds - you’re a great example of what I love about the best TH-camrs - grand quality - your gear seems good to me
Cameras - As it is often said, "it does not matter what camera it is the person that is using it that counts" I have done it , jumped in and bought the LATEST must be better. nae mair. Gear is the same. I have a wee 2 man tent that I got in the mid-80s still waterproof, easy to pitch. cost me then about 4 weeks wages but it has paid for itself. Best waterproof jacket I have had (still use) is 30year old and still waterproof - but heavy. PS Tent was made by Ultimate gear. ATB and thanks for sharing
I'm exactly the same Murray when it comes to gear, when I buy it I use it for a prolonged time until it's finished. It was watching your channel that made me buy several items of clothing from RR and I'm really pleased with the quality of their gear. Thanks again and I'll tune back in next week mate.
I'd add an extra step to check that the map works when in aeroplane mode. I've been caught out by this on OS Maps - I downloaded a route as opposed to an offline map and it wouldn't pick up after I put it in aeroplane mode. This is okay if you have signal when you find out but if you're driving in and there is no signal at the start then the game is a bogey.
You need a map, compass and knowledge of magnetic declination and pacing. This is in case your battery goes flat or the Russians remove the satellites.
You can pick up a second-hand etrex 20 that will work for a week on two AA batteries. Free maps available and free gpx downloads. It has no touch screen to go wrong in the rain. It works in sub zero temps, is glove friendly and you can bounce it off rocks. It is also completely waterproof and it covers more satellite systems than a phone. I would carry a map and compass as well though. I just don't trust phones or apps to always work. I've had phones conk out in the cold and apps showing the wrong position by a few hundred metres. Then, as someone else pointed out, all it takes is a NATO exercise or Russian meddling and you are back to maps and compass. I do believe everyone going up the hills should be able to use a map and compass in a white out. Some can't use one on a clear day.
Murray, been subscribed for years. We love your channel for the trips. Fed up of other outdoor channels trying to convince us to buy the latest tent or gear they have been sent to review. Apart from maybe Andrew Park never. a bad review. I've been using the same veho action camera now 9 years old and for my needs fine Please from all of us stay true to yours roots and the steaming boots adventures we all love.
Thanks Nigel - very reassuring to hear comments like this one (and lots more similar ones on this thread). Hopefully I wont have to go down that route any time soon Thanks for watching ATB Murray
Hi a wee tip, take one big(Aldi etc)and two smaller plastic bags and place the bigger over your saddle and tie, and smaller over your grips with elastic bands when you leave your bike. Even when your wet yourself a slighty dryer derriere and an ability to hold your gribs is nice. Atb PS Scotland for the Euros 🔥🔥🔥
Coffee, a scotch egg & choc solves life's little problems eh. 😉 Nice approach up the Fonzie 🕺 I bet you get asked to review a ton load of gear. I cannae notice a difference in cameras maself. Am an amateur when it comes to these sort of things. 😉
Completely agree about gear Murray, I had a Fieldmaster jacket for 30 years in fact still have it. Cameras don't take pictures, people do. I still haven't upgraded my DSLR cameras but I don't really care I still enjoy them. Keep up the good work Murray. My weekly Scotland fix.
Thanks Lisa, nice to see I am not the only person with these views - seems to have hit a good nerve with lots of people :) Dont think I have the funds either to change everything every few years !!lol Thanks for watching ATB Murray
Mate, your spot on about camera's and kit.i think we're too quick to jump to next season's must have kit.great work again and very much appreciated.cheers mate.
Your videos are always really excellent quality, there would be no need to upgrade anything. The vast majority will be watching the videos on a mobile device which you would unlikely be able to tell the difference from a £200 to a£2000 camera. Completed my 96th and 97th Munros yesterday, the long avoided Creag Mhor and Heasgarnich in Glen Lochy. For me i take as little gear as possible, the hills are tough enough without being weighted down. Check MWIS reports, i feel its better to wait for the right conditions as its all about the views. I also always download offline maps from the WH app, its helped greatly to navigate and stay on track. Looking forward to the 100 milestone now!
Another good video Murray. As for your cameras the one that was slightly elevated was a little bit better but no need to spend loads of money on another camera. What you produce is spectacular. I always watch your videos on the TV from my phone. As for gear. I still have a fleece (polertec 100 in my day) which I got for my 40th birthday and recently wore it in Glencoe on my 70th. So no shame. I also have had 2 Sprayway coats over my hill walking time spanning 35 years. I recently bought my 3rd last year. Looking forward to your next adventure. Great footage.
What you describe is something I've grappled with myself. I'm planning a walk on the WHW this Autumn and being fairly new to long distance hiking I've been researching gear online and watching hundreds of TH-cam videos to try and ensure I'm going up there with the right kit. And it can become very easy to fall into a trap of chasing the "perfect" pieces of gear and as a result spending a fair chunk of money on what are marginal gains. So now I try to seek out gear that creators have been using for a while so I can feel a little more confident I'm not watching a creator making a video because they've been gifted a particular piece of kit.
Absolutely, so much too choose from and so many different TH-camrs offering advice, mostly good advice. Hope you enjoy the west highlands way , irrespecti9ve of what gear you decide to use :) Thanks for watching ATB Murray
Great to hear you using metres for elevation rather than feet like others seem to do! Your gripe about the tech/sales etc. is a known thing look at Mars/CocoCola etc. same product but they gotta change it even tho they cant as then it's not hte same product so its the wrapping and how its all worded in the ads that changes And also great to hear you talking about using tech for navigation, everyone is hung up on bashing people that arent great at map/compass and forget that we can talk about using tech quite happily if you are comfortable with reverting back to older methods if/when needed!
I agree entirely with your moan about equipment and marketing. It's often overblown and it makes it difficult to see when the genuine game-changers come along. As others have said, your footage helps tell the story and inspire us to new adventures. As ever, thanks for sharing and carrying all those cameras!
Thanks Alasdair - I should o my be tempted by smaller light weight camera shouldnt I 😂😂😂👍 no doubt there will be a marketing campaign for something new next week that willl suck me into wanting some more stuff 😂👍
Sounds like you had a hectic week in the big city It’s nice to come home ,decompress and then go for a relaxing bike ride/hike in the mountains The fresh air remedy worked it’s magic again! Take care until the next video 🇨🇦❤️
Thanks Sue - getting to the hill is definetely my therapy to get away from the daily grind - so lucky to be within reach of so many fabulous mountains :) Thanks for watching ATB Murray
Nice film Murray. Lots of chat and info to make up for lack of views...... Your right with hype and advertising. I've bought a Rev Race jacket... mostly because of the discount. But I don't like it! ...as for DJI 4. Love mine and 30fps and 4k the only thing I ever notice is the auto exposure sometimes. Love the picture. But maybe my eyes need testing 😂
I just find that most things lately have got so crappy, poor quality but more money, just tryong to buy less but better quality, just love your channel Murray might even buy a scotch egg and call it Murray, I tend to watch your channel on Sundays when i am on my own its always one i look forward too the most, take care xxx
Very informative video Murray. I think these companies can brainwash you into thinking you need their camera or gear as it's the best on the market but if you are happy with what you have already and it does the job for you then why be tempted to spend hundreds on something that is really no better than what you already have. Its all a money making ply . Enjoyed this one and was jealous of the white chocolate Twix hope you enjoyed it. ATB
I'd say the image quality and stabilization of the GoPro 11 black I used to use is better than the Action 4 I now use. Though for the ease of use with the DJI MIC 2, and connecting to the app on the iPhone for preview, and also you can preview while recording on the Action 4; far out-way the grief of using the GoPro ! The Pocket 3 is fabulous as well 😉 Totally agree with you on the funnel marketing, though I make fewer driven purchases now I'm aware of how it operates 🙂 Good luck 🍀
Absolutely nothing wrong with your video quality. I only update kit when it becomes damaged / worn out, or when something new comes on the market that will make a genuine, tangible, improvement to what I do.
Bennachie is in Aberdeenshire and has an amusing song about being stung by a bumble bee while wearing a kilt! On the topic of cameras,I personally have pretty mediocre eyesight and expensive gear really doesn't make a big difference, though I know younger people may disagree. Your videos are amazing to me anyway, a real treat and I thank you
No issues ever with quality of videos, keep what you have! Gear wise I keep it until it’s done/fails! You pay enough for it get moneys worth is my thoughts
Watching a second time over my morning coffee. Your adventures Never disappoint . The grey day was very atmospheric but you have every right to feel grumpy sometimes! Totally agree about the gear, I have a duvet jacket I bought in Nevis Sport over 30 years ago and it’s still the warmest I possess, if slightly worn! Thanks for another great video- don’t forget to the sun is up there somewhere!👍👏
By coincidence I cycled up Glen Almond today as far as Dunan and then cycled back. It was distinctly chilly for June but at least it was a dry. It warmed up and became brighter in the afternoon. Many years ago I helped some of my pupils doing their DofE award in this area so brought back many memories.
Im no expert on cameras or video action cams, but i find your footage is always great image quality. In regards to gear, ive started to find that some of the dearer items arent as good quality or have reduced their speicfications but not the price, only thing ive upgraded twice in a year was waterproof trousers but the final purchase was worthy and have done the job for a year now. Great video again, Ben Chonzie is on my list.
Always standing on bag straps, winds me up 😂 expect phones have room for innovation and improvement but full size cameras have maybe stagnated with just a few whistles and bells being added. I still use a Sony A7r2 and bought it used a few years ago. Been tempted to upgrade but not worth it for the little improvement I would get. I will wait till it breaks. Often want to leave it at home due to weight but often these landscapes need and deserve a big sensor 😊
absolutely agree - the only bad thing abou the sonys camera is the size and weight - maybe one day the action cams will improve to the point where the DSLRs and mirrorless become redundant - doesnt look like any time soon though from what I have seen so far!!lol Thanks for watching ATB Murray
We know nothing about photography or cameras, but we do agree with your moan on the gear marketing. It is very cleverly done, but sometimes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it 😊👌. Although it can be nice to treat yourself occasionally. We think you have to right mix of old and new. And whatever you choose, we are grateful glad enables you to make such fantastic videos 😊👍
Thank you Murray, beautiful video as always, never boring to go up a hill more than once in Scotland. Quite agree with you about gear, just get the best you can afford at the time and hope it lasts for a few years, pointless to keep upgrading every season like some do, as most of the time it is not an upgrade and a waste of money, would much rather spend it on fuel and snacks (not Twix though, Scotch eggs are lovely). I think some folk just want to show off they have the latest kit all the time as its Instagram worthy but it doesnae make for a better video. Saying that I got my first ever brand new action camera this year but I had always used my phone until then...just too expensive...things aren't as "obsolete" as quickly as the various industries make out. At least I know how to say Ben Chonzie now 😂
Thats a good point - I could spend any money I save on more bars of white Twix bars ;) lol very good with a cuppa tea :) Thanks for watching ATB Murray
I agree with you 100% . it's easy to fall into the trap by watching these videos and content creators tell you how great they're gear is, and then people think they have to spend ridiculous amounts of money like for instance 1000 dollars for a hilleberg tent. there is no possible way those tents are worth that much money. you can easily find a better tent for under 200 dollars.
Interesting points about gear. I love photography, but I also love all the techy gadget stuff that comes along with it. But I have been fairly sensible with the purchases I have made over the years with each new camera bringing something important to my workflow (stills or video). The Nikon Z6 III gets announced next week, so that's bound to send the TH-cam universe into meltdown (good and bad!). Anyway, good to be out in the hills no matter the weather! :-)
Thanks for the heads up regards the Nikon Z6 - no doubt I will be hankering after one but must remind myself of my own points in the video!!lol The marketing teams do such a good job!!lol Catch up soon Jules Murray P.S. I might have visited Etive again recently and may have a video coming from Ardmaddy - what a location that is!!:)
@@ScotlandsMountains I accept no responsibility for any reduction in bank balance! lol Will keep an eye out for the Etive video...looking forward to that one. And yes, lets catch up soon. Hoping to be spending more time in Scotland soon. 🙂
Another grand video Murray, and so true about how easy it is to get sucked into always wanting the latest tech or latest kit. And as you point out a vast majority of the time the improvements are negligible, but our wallet is extremely lighter. Stay safe and ATB
Looks like you had that entire valley all to yourself! I imagine that there won’t be many routes completely unpopulated throughout the rest of summer. Enjoy it while you can! Cheers, and ATB!
Thanks Erin - it is a lovely quiet Glen when you get further west, away from the main road, not that many people venture too far up the glen thankfully :) Thanks for watching ATB Murray
Also I recently got a DJI Osmo Action 4 and watching other TH-camrs settings and copying , but kept getting shite results so started leaving it on Auto everything and very happy with results so far, upgraded to DJI Mini 3 pro after crashing Mini 2se and thats just awesome. Happy travels bud.
so many conflicting advice out there too as you mention - some times the auto setting work just fine :) Breaking a camera can be a painful experience!! I have replaced thwo or three cameras after dropping them (or crashing them!!lol) . Thanks for watching ATB Murray
Re the DJI Action 4 can I ask what mode you are filming in? More specifically, are you using D-Log M setting and applying colour grading or using LUTS post production? D-log does produce a much flatter and less saturated image but it enables greater flexibility in colour grading, producing much better results. Interested in knowing how the Bluetooth audio connection works too, are you using it with the Rode wireless mic? Also, remember that the Action 4 works down to -20C so it will come into its own for winter filming. I don't think you made a bad purchase, but perhaps just need to get to know it a bit better to get the most out of it. HTH.
Not too sure - definitely don't use the log profiles on any camera as just don't have time to add to the editing process as it takes up al ot of time already. I have set the user settings to ones I found best after watching lots of TH-camr discuss and doing a few experiments. Good point about battery temp and of course the microphone which are really good improvements to make life easier.. Will see how good the battery is (noticed the big camera batteries have been so much better in cold weather in recent years too. Just don't see much of a leap forward in image quality Im afraid. Nice wee camera though, sure it will be replaced by a "5" version before too long... Thanks for watching ATB Murray
@@ScotlandsMountains Cheers, Murray. I watched a comparison vid between original Osmo Action and Action 4 last night actually and know what, there wasn't a noticeable difference in quality! Just when the D-log came into play - but you can't use auto exposure and shutter speed for that as it creates a lot of extra work in post. It's easy to add ready made LUTS in editing though, if you do film in manual mode. I got some free when ordering DJI Mic 2 last week and some TH-cam creators sell their LUTS packs fairly cheap. Incidentally, you said that you got the Action 4 for its ability to connect (via Bluetooth) and still retain its waterproof ability. That's true but Bluetooth audio is poor by comparison (it won't be pro standard) so for that reason many use it just for syncing the pro audio recorded on the transmitter. Just thought I'd mention that in case you weren't aware. What is your big camera btw?
Haha - me too Murray - I am a marketing department’s dream man - constantly tempted into buying new shiny kit 🤦♂️. At least I have a steady stream of “nearly new” kit to sell on eBay 😅
Hi - I use Fizan poles and they have been pretty good - haven't (surprisingly enough) bout too many over the years so cannot really comment on any other brands - these latest pair have lasted well and the ones before were a good 6 or 7 years before failing Thanks for watching ATB Murray
I was up Ben a whoopee, whahoozie...sorry, Chonzie during that wee purple patch of weather. Having watched one of your previous videos where you walked from Glen Turret. It's a lovely walk isn't it? Anyway, sometimes a good sulk isn't a bad thing, and having done it on a walk, it's never going to stay in the system for any great length of time. As always, enjoyed the vid. 👌
Okay can we get one thing out of the way? You had a twix with white chocolate? The horror! Hehe, just had to give you a hard time about that since I'd rather go hungry 😂As far as your video and cameras that you're using, all I know is I feel like I'm receiving top notch, clear, sharp, gorgeous images. I'll admit I don't know a lot about that type of technology. Agree, though, that marketers are going to try and continue to get people to try the next best thing, and that includes your gear, too. I say if it's still working well for you, don't change anything, although I sometimes do the same thing as your wife - I tell my husband it's time to pitch something he's been wearing for ages lol! Great video (although the midges, ugh), and you're right, there's a wild, remote feeling about that place, yet still beautiful, but in a different way. Great idea to talk about the importance of having a compass when going. Thanks Murray! 👋
Thanks for the video as usual it's great. 😎 As for video quality - I haven't handed in a single 4K video yet, to any of my customers. Well done 1080p tops any mediocre 2K or 4K. Those high resolutions are often "made up". Quality full HD, full frame sensor - always tops small sensor 4K! What new cameras are good for is at times low light, slow motion friendly frame rates etc. I also recommend playing with the right codecs formats.l, as well as rendering format options themselves, I was amazed what differece it makes to get of the beaten path. Social Media compression is a b**ch and video edited OK for YT will probably fail on other platforms... Online forums can be a blessing and a curse for that kind of knowledge. I think you are doing it all good Sir 🙂
Agree with all your poiints for sure and especially the final film often looks different once uploaded to TH-cam- but sometime for the better - I sometimes see the platform smooth out some grainy footage :) the joys ! lol Thanks for watching
Marketing and some youtubers make us feel we need the latest and greatest new gear.... i always try to remember that the true outdoorsmen (hunters, shepards...) i knew when i grew up just bought whatever was available at the local store (no hours spent on gear reviews like me :). And they would only replace when worn out or broken....
Absolutely Victor - completely agree , infact I spent the first two or three summers of my hill wlaking life going up and down Munros in Catapilar boots and whatever clothing I could find - getting waterproof boots was a revelation to me!!lol Thanks for watching ATB Murray
Hi Murray, video quality can be in the eye of the beholder, that said major leaps in quality only come every few years. For us of a certain age analog to digital comes to mind, a quantum leap but how much since then? I was lucky enough to go to a video conference in Orlando most years and there they would line up competing devices showing the same image on same quality screens, the difference's in image quality were there for all to see. so my point is unless you can do a direct comparison it is very difficult for the end user to see the benefit of new kit... Bottom line I think the quality of your recordings look great on my big screen TV!
Your A7 video quality is first class in any conditions Murray, and the action cams are ok in bright sunny weather but very noisy in the clag. Apart from video quality though the action cam wide angle makes all the hills look small and flat. Good for stable footage on the bike, but that’s about it. Drone shots with the tele are fab though. 👍
My pet hate is the likes of Salomon "upgrading" models and discontinuing older ones that fitted me perfectly. One US blogger said to buy up a few to cover you. Sorry but I'm not a millionaire.😂 I have an action camera. It is 10 years old and does me. I don't buy new cameras anyway. I can get them cheap second hand. I used to carry a mirrorless but the phone does me fine these days. As for navigation. I always carry a map and compass but also carry my Garmin etrex. Yeah, I know you can save battery on a phone but the etrex will run for a week on 2 AA batteries, works in freezing temperatures and is waterproof and shock proof. It is also glove friendly. The only thing it doesn't have is in reach but my android doesn't have that capability either. Once I'm up and about again, I expect my family will get me a Garmin messenger. The risk is the dissected artery opens and gives me another mini stroke. Probably best to get some sort of emergency kit instead of a note in the car😂😂
Hi Jennifer, no real reason, suppose I could argue it is lighter as I can use the stove on water collected from the hill (and the fact that any thermos flasks I have used in the past have been rubbish lol - I am sure they are better now :) Thanks for watching ATB Murray
Love the vid. Was it the chocolate and coffee that helped the mood or just spending time in the Scottish hills? Also have some big grumbles about new gear and kit and but I fall for it all the bloody time! Very rarely mention any of the kit in my videos, I've heard it's a great way to drive up audiences, but I get the feeling I'm a bit more like you, and would much rather focus on the adventure. Thanks for the video and the moan Murray, keep doing what you're doing!
Thanks - very much appreciated - must admit you are right in that doing gear videos can help get more views on TH-cam - I have tried to steer clear and it has maybe meant me not getting as many hits - who knows , more interested in having an adventure and sharing that telling you about a new camera anyhoos !1lol might change in the future but the longer I can keep away from it the better!!lol Thanks for watching ATB Murray
Gear for me the older the better😂 Feels like you have got into your fighting kit, when you put the old stuff on. Removes cares from your life. But if it's new, you worry about damage etc... especially as you say at 2024 prices
Murray, you're a Scotsman, if you weren't sometimes a bit moany grumpy; as you put it, I'd think you were unwell 😉 I also don't think you're unnecesarily stingy. Just because companies can make a new product with capabilities that may be marginally better and charge hundreds of pounds for it doesn't mean we need to jump to their tune and buy the darn things. I'm still using very happily a 2017 mirrorless; APS-C sensor, with a 40mm lens as my webcam for video calls for work and what have you, and unless it decides one day to give up the ghost, it'll do me right hopefully for a good chunk of the future; aye it's a bit overkill for a webcam, but it looks spot-on and does a great job. Glad you got to stretch your legs, and glad you chose to go for the shorter 20min drive. Thanks Murray, helped a lot!
Thanks Rick - seems most of the new camera that are coming our just have marginal gains over their predecessors , hoping there might be a bigger improvemtn coming at some point , but until that point I will stay with what I have at the moment (unless I managed to wreck another camera in between times!!- a strong possibility!!lol) Thanks for watching ATB Murray
I got sucked in as well - ordered the Insta360 Ace Pro recently as they've added horizon levelling and it is a feature I really value. When you put the horizon levelling on the pictures are crawling with noise if it is a cloudy day in June, never mind a dark day in September. Turn on their "low light" shooting mode and the pictures are over sharpened, over saturated and just awful. Your DJI images look a bit over sharpened and with too much contrast to me so worth looking in the settings and maybe lowering the sharpening and shooting in a flat profile or similar? My GoPro7 does a far better job with pictures, just it lacks the horizon levelling. Like you I wanted a wireless mic connection as if I add the media mod to my GoPro 10 it is no longer waterproof and rain has already destroyed the media mod twice on me, the mic I can put under a coat to protect it if it can connect to the camera wirelessly. Needless to say the YT reviews of the Ace Pro indicated that it was the best thing since sliced bread and great in low light, it isn't even usable in cloudy bright! Now I've got to post it back to Hong Kong and deal with customs etc.
that is exactly what I was talking about - glad I didnt buy the new 360 camera now - sorry for your loss!!lol In terms of the action 4 settings tried a few different ones (have reduced the sharpness etc etc , but will maybe do some experimenting of my own instead of watching all the YT channels suggesting best settings!!lol - one day I think they will improve significantly though where you wont notice the difference and DSLRS will be a thing of the past :) Thanks for watching ATB Murray
DJI sensors are supposed to be ISO Invariant which should allow good quality in any light but it doesn't compare to the Sony. Do you use any fancy recording modes like D-log etc? Another great hike and video log Murray!
Ah not a happie chappy today 😂 good to have a good moan sometimes. Lked your reference to Nan Sheppard. Love the living mountain. Btw yes marketing. Alot of my stuff two decades old Is better quality than newer stuff. Speaking of gadgets, is that a Fenix 7? Think you did a vid showing it in use.
Ah yes the living mountain is fantastic ! You are correct and got the Fenix 7 at a rather good deal on Amazon. First smart watch I have owned and live the stats for measurement the stats on walks for the videos :)
As per usual a great video with a lot of effort that’s not seen, regarding the upgrades I too am thinking of upgrading the DJI AIR 2S to the Mavic 3 Pro purely for the camera BUT is it really worth the upgrade & is it better to wait until it comes down in price just like the Air 3 has , capitalism isn’t a great thing but we do get hooked , time to break it & just enjoy the outdoors
I think the companies do the minimum each year so that there's always something new each year. They are probably sitting on tech that they won't release for a few years. Got to keep us buying new stuff.
I started woth basic gear, and during the lockdowns upgraded nearly all of my kit, trail running included and the differences are massive. Waterproofs uaed to be loud and noisy, the fits are generally better and theres little tweaks that make them more comfortable. That said i think they've moved from being designwd for tbe outdoor person, to now being appraling to city folk with lots of cash and like the 'outdoor lifestyle' as you can see in some of their adverts. That said, i got a ME Lightline jacket and a Vulcan jacket and they are absolutely incresible. Best money ive spent. Was super hoping youd start the rant on smartphone cameras but ylu didnt 😂
I like new kit and do buy stuff but only if it has a use for something I don't already have. Tend to use gear to destruction. Good gear, well maintained, is built to last for years. I have the same rucsac, repaired a couple of times, for ages now because I cannot see a new one on the market that has the same specs as my old one so I keep it going. Thanks for uploading, Murray. Important points raised about new kit for the sake of it and sustainability, don't think you were moaning/ranting. 🏴🏔👍
Normally i'm in full agreement Murray - however I feel the need to point out the fact the the white chocolate Twix is just plain wrong!! Haha - i'm still rocking my 25 year old Keela jacket (not water tight any more but good enough for a shower or two) and ancient backpacks. Newer gear isn't always better - I firmly believe quality was higher 10+ years ago. Technology does come on in leaps sometimes though - mobile phones and their imagery is on a different level from even 5 years ago. I tend to be very picky when buying new gear and want to see a clear improvement from the gear it replaces
Are you able to say which/where you bought permethrin from please Murray, I'm trying to find Sawyers permethrin but it seems unobtainable in the UK and the Lifesystems left my kit all greasy.
@@ScotlandsMountains Hi thank you, I shall give it another go then 😁 , I probably should have shaken the bottle before use or something. The thought of Ticks freaks me out! 😱... must say your videos are consistently brilliant, you create a story, which the viewer can appreciate along with the wonderful camera footage.
Brilliant, enjoyed once again. I think the 360 camera is totally worth it. Brings the viewer more as of they are living the experience. Gives for a different video every now and again for a change from our usual. I wonna get one. I remember doing all these munros as a giant Steve fallon round. From where you set off on the bike. It was brutal. That is one of the hardest rounds 22 miles. Bloody heck. And I did it as a half hill run half hike. Ye the bog was unreal and the pathlessness 😂 relentless. Takes in a few corbettes too. And just when u think it's getting better it isn't 😂 Thanks again Murray 👍
nice one - a few Corbetts around about Ben Chonzie too :) The 360 camera are good at what they do but TBH I only use mine when i cannot use my hands ie cycling or climbing as I dont think the image quality is even as good as the action camera (normal ones) from last few years . I am sure it will improve as time goes on :) Hope your injuries are healing up and you are getting out and about again Thanks for watching ATB Murray
@@ScotlandsMountains hi Murray Thnak you. Unfortunatly for the injuries. No they are not. 13 months in now. I've taken 2 months sick leave to see if helps. My physical job I believe is what also no caused quadricep tendinosis too in my knee other leg from achillis. From compensation. I even think my achilis rehba caused the knee. I hope so by next year this will be finished. Barely manage to walk past 1.5 miles without the pain in my achillis shooting up. I've put a break to the camping videos too. As enough enough. I want this rid of.
@@GoSummitSolo oh no - that sounds bad / maybe rest will do the trick (easier said than done from person experience:( . I have read a few scientific paper tho that suggest surgery to the knee is now being reduced and resting for the same period if surgery had been done has same effect if that’s any comfort . Hope the rest sorts it out . ATB and hope you recover quickly and soon M
not sure how next years jacket can be better than this years down jacket. Down doesn't change. Camera wise Mega pixels not the whole story. depends on chip quality and other chips involved
Always enjoyed your videos: and have often admired the image quality (and sound too)! I think the story is: you are the videographer, you do it a lot, and you know and use the gear you have well. So new gear, maybe aimed at less experienced people, maybe with features you don't need or use isn't going to do that much for you. Eventually things might make a big step, but using a camera for five years in all conditions, troubleshooting, problem solving: that's the way to do good work.
Aye I've got a GO Pro hero 7 black and Go pro max 360 , recently we acquired a Go 3 and the footage isn't as good , for what we do the two we've got is good enough
always Tescos finest scotch eggs - they are my favourite (dont mistake the tesco ultimate egg for the finest egg as the ultimate was a huge disappointment!1lol) Thanks for watching ATB Murray
@ScotlandsMountains cheers Murray. I've heard the black pudding Scotch egg is an utter delight. I'd give it a go bit not sure if it's best left to those posh Arc'teryx wearing hikers.
Thanks Charles - very much appreciated :)

Your footage is great, but really, I enjoy your videos because of you, your storytelling and the beautiful land you are showing us. Thank you.

Hi Murray.
Another great adventure.
A fair old cycle to get to the starting point.
Great scenery on the way.
Catch you on the next one mate.
Lol

The idea of this year's colour is great. It means you can get last years colour at knock down prices.
Good points there - and first hand experience - some of the older stuff is just as good if not better 👍
Hi murry, thanks for making awesome videos. They inspired me and a friend to spend 10 days traveling across Scotland and bumping into JERRY on the way up stob dearg.

Concur, Turret a much nicer walk up than Lednock. I do take an odd pleasure in appearing at the cairn from a direction that surprises folk.
This route looks more interesting than the standard up and down from Glen Lednock so definitely on the bucket list.
Great video Murray .
I'm exactly the same Murray when it comes to gear, when I buy it I use it for a prolonged time until it's finished. It was watching your channel that made me buy several items of clothing from RR and I'm really pleased with the quality of their gear. Thanks again and I'll tune back in next week mate.
Step one download map , step two put your phone on aeroplane mode , saves battery and now your phone is a gps
Absolutely agree with map and compass but magnetic variation is happily negligible just now so no need to take into account 😊
I've been using the same veho action camera now 9 years old and for my needs fine
Please from all of us stay true to yours roots and the steaming boots adventures we all love.

It will always be about passion, and your wonderful content, thank you, look forward much more, well done. Art Westwood Melbourne australia

No need to upgrade the kit. Your films are a pleasure every time.

Only done that Munro once from Glen Lednock, i remember loads of Mountain Hares near the summit.
Hope you enjoy the west highlands way , irrespecti9ve of what gear you decide to use :)

Great to hear you using metres for elevation rather than feet like others seem to do!
Your gripe about the tech/sales etc. is a known thing look at Mars/CocoCola etc. same product but they gotta change it even tho they cant as then it's not hte same product so its the wrapping and how its all worded in the ads that changes
And also great to hear you talking about using tech for navigation, everyone is hung up on bashing people that arent great at map/compass and forget that we can talk about using tech quite happily if you are comfortable with reverting back to older methods if/when needed!
I agree entirely with your moan about equipment and marketing. It's often overblown and it makes it difficult to see when the genuine game-changers come along.
As others have said, your footage helps tell the story and inspire us to new adventures.

ATB
The white chocolate Twix with a cuppa is hard. To beat :)
The Pocket 3 is fabulous as well 😉
Totally agree with you on the funnel marketing, though I make fewer driven purchases now I'm aware of how it operates 🙂

Thanks Kristin - white chocolate Twixs are the way forward now - no going back!!lol

Agree with all your poiints for sure and especially the final film often looks different once uploaded to TH-cam- but sometime for the better - I sometimes see the platform smooth out some grainy footage :) the joys ! lol

Absolutely Victor - completely agree , infact I spent the first two or three summers of my hill wlaking life going up and down Munros in Catapilar boots and whatever clothing I could find - getting waterproof boots was a revelation to me!!lol

Thanks S👍👍 agree with the point on the action cams - easy to use though 😂 catch up soon sir
My pet hate is the likes of Salomon "upgrading" models and discontinuing older ones that fitted me perfectly. One US blogger said to buy up a few to cover you. Sorry but I'm not a millionaire.😂
I have an action camera.
Your videography is amazing… I myself is a wee jealous lol another fantastic video bud.
thank you - very much appreciated

On a day trip why not take flask instead lugging jet boil? Just wondering.
Hi Jennifer, no real reason, suppose I could argue it is lighter as I can use the stove on water collected from the hill (and the fact that any thermos flasks I have used in the past have been rubbish lol - I am sure they are better now :)

Thanks - very much appreciated - must admit you are right in that doing gear videos can help get more views on TH-cam - I have tried to steer clear and it has maybe meant me not getting as many hits - who knows , more interested in having an adventure and sharing that telling you about a new camera anyhoos !1lol might change in the future but the longer I can keep away from it the better!!lol

Gear for me the older the better😂 Feels like you have got into your fighting kit, when you put the old stuff on. Removes cares from your life. But if it's new, you worry about damage etc... especially as you say at 2024 prices
absolutely - I am terrified to take my newer waterproof jacket out in case it gets damaged - far too expensive!!lol

Thanks Rick - seems most of the new camera that are coming our just have marginal gains over their predecessors , hoping there might be a bigger improvemtn coming at some point , but until that point I will stay with what I have at the moment (unless I managed to wreck another camera in between times!!- a strong possibility!!lol)

Now I've got to post it back to Hong Kong and deal with customs etc.
that is exactly what I was talking about - glad I didnt buy the new 360 camera now - sorry for your loss!!lol In terms of the action 4 settings tried a few different ones (have reduced the sharpness etc etc , but will maybe do some experimenting of my own instead of watching all the YT channels suggesting best settings!!lol - one day I think they will improve significantly though where you wont notice the difference and DSLRS will be a thing of the past :)

DJI sensors are supposed to be ISO Invariant which should allow good quality in any light but it doesn't compare to the Sony. Do you use any fancy recording modes like D-log etc? Another great hike and video log Murray!
Hi - never use any of the log profiles - dont think I could face giving myself more editing for colour grading 😂😂👍
Agree many action cameras have been a disappointment. But what gets me is the cost of clothing which is astounding. Good moan Murray. AtB.
the cost of everything seems to be going through the roof , always more expensive for marginal (if any) gains!!

Ben-ache-ee in Angus and the Mearns always!
Still have and regularly use me 25 year old Keela gear, Mountain Equipment sleeping bag and Mardale clothing, they used to make some great kit.
I do like the Keela stuff - got a few bits and bobs from them over the years and its always been good stufff :)

Thanks - and agree - would be sensible to by when old stuff is needing replaced not for fashion - but those marketing departments are soo good lol 😂
ANYWAY count, ten ..lol . . . . Great stuff thanx
I tend to be very picky when buying new gear and want to see a clear improvement from the gear it replaces
best thing twix ever did - changing to white chocolate offering ;) lol
Are you able to say which/where you bought permethrin from please Murray, I'm trying to find Sawyers permethrin but it seems unobtainable in the UK and the Lifesystems left my kit all greasy.
Hi - I use the lifesystems spray - not had any issues with it that k am aware of - the ticks however don’t like it 😂👍
I have lifesystems permethrin and not had anything go greasy.
Beautiful views ❤
Another great vidio, thanks Murray
Brilliant, enjoyed once again. I think the 360 camera is totally worth it. Brings the viewer more as of they are living the experience. Gives for a different video every now and again for a change from our usual. I wonna get one. I remember doing all these munros as a giant Steve fallon round. From where you set off on the bike. It was brutal. That is one of the hardest rounds 22 miles. Bloody heck. And I did it as a half hill run half hike. Ye the bog was unreal and the pathlessness 😂 relentless. Takes in a few corbettes too. And just when u think it's getting better it isn't 😂
Thanks again Murray 👍
nice one - a few Corbetts around about Ben Chonzie too :) The 360 camera are good at what they do but TBH I only use mine when i cannot use my hands ie cycling or climbing as I dont think the image quality is even as good as the action camera (normal ones) from last few years . I am sure it will improve as time goes on :) Hope your injuries are healing up and you are getting out and about again

ATB and hope you recover quickly and soon

Great video again. I dont replace anything until its utterly useless. I'll botch repair everything before i buy new. Its not stingy, its old skool 😅
Concur (although my wife wishes I would chuck some old clothes 😂😂
My wife insists I chuck some lf my new clothes 😅@@ScotlandsMountains
not sure how next years jacket can be better than this years down jacket.
