Kia EV6 Battery Conditioning Update INITIAL TEST! 😀

  • Initial test of the new battery preconditioning update for my 2022 Kia EV6. This update allows the Kia EV6 to warm the battery pack right before getting to a level 3 DC Fast Charger to speed up the charging speeds when it's cold outside. In this video it's not cold, but the battery pack minimum temperature was colder than 69 degrees which means I was able to enable the battery conditioning in my EV6. We can see how much power is used to do the battery preconditioning, how long it takes to condition the EV6 battery pack, and I look at EV charging speeds and time at a 350 kW Electrify America charging station. Check out the video and let me know if you have any questions. Thanks for watching!

    Jeff, finally got battery preconditioning and parking brake emergency brake installed correctly. This is the first time does Kia dealer has ever done that so I took the information and then they followed it step-by-step this time and got it right. Thanks for all your information drove to the DC charger everything worked well and the brake is awesome. 👍🏾

    Great video, thanks! Impressive sustained charge speed on the EV6 under what I guess is "normal" temperature outside. Was it around 70 deg f.? Btw, I tought there was a heater icon when it was actually heating the battery, not a snow-flake icon. Did you get all the updates on the BMS?

    • @TechnicallyJeff
      @TechnicallyJeff  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks! It was about 62 degrees outside based on the video. Regarding the icon, it depends on the year. The 2023+ have a different icon than the 2022. But yes I've had al updates completed.

  • @ShawnGBR

    4:32 the reason the EA would have previously been showing a different number for the charge is that it was using some of the charger’s electricity to get the batteries toasty (up to that 70°F / 21°C level) and not putting that amount in the battery itself. As you already preconditioned before getting to the chargers this time, the car lets the charger know that the batteries are already at optimal temperature, so the charger just delivers the DC straight to the battery cells.

    • @TechnicallyJeff
      @TechnicallyJeff  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The vehicle's dash gauges show the amount coming in before taking out the additional draws of power (electronics, hvac, battery care, etc). That's why it's typically more than the amount getting to the battery when you look at it in car scanner if you look at that field.

  • @JonasDavidsson
    @JonasDavidsson ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Your charging speeds are pretty much correct. Your state of charge was too high when you plugged in to get more than that. Arrive with 20% and you will rock that 230+ until at least 50%. Great video Jeff.

    • @TechnicallyJeff
      @TechnicallyJeff  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Jonas - eh from what I've seen, it should have stayed a little higher a little longer. During a 150 kW charger test last year - th-cam.com/video/JZiwLxMt5NE/w-d-xo.html - I was able to stay at over 170 kW until about 60% and it stayed at just under 160 kW until about 75%. We'll see what happens in my next test.

    • @JonasDavidsson
      @JonasDavidsson ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TechnicallyJeff Yes, but your SOC were lower, 20% then. That impacts the voltage and current the car asks for. I've been running this update since October here in Sweden and I get different results every time. 🫣

    • @TechnicallyJeff
      @TechnicallyJeff  ปีที่แล้ว

      So you're saying the starting SOC impacts what it pulls at 55%? Hmm. And yeah it's not going to be exactly the same, but it should be somewhat consistent lol. I will say, it seems the vehicle estimates for charge times are very accurate (when it says like 15 min to 80%, etc)

    Can you explain to me how I can see if the software for battery heating is active? My EV6 gt-line is from June 30, 2022. It is equipped with battery heating as standard, but the software was not yet completed at that time. In January 2023, the dealer still installed the update, or so they say. How can I see or control if this has happened?

      Hey I did not. The battery preconditioning doesn't actually use that much battery. Mine only needed to run for about 8 minutes. Even if it ran for a full 20 minutes pulling 5 kW the entire time to warm the battery, that's still only 1.67 kWh of energy which is around 2% of the battery pack.
