I have one correction. I live a about 2 miles from an EA DC fast charger. I can tell the car to navigate there and it will start to precondition. Obviously 2 miles isnt enough to warm it up, but I can go inside and eat breakfast or whatever and then hop in 20 minutes later. Specially since I can leave the garage door closed and not worry about fumes 😁
I can confirm this. I forgot to use the onboard nav this morning until a couple miles from a charger, and noticed that it activated conditioning. Still didn’t do much due to limited time, but better than nothing.
I live in Canada and based on my last winter experiences, preconditioning can start at more than 60 miles of the destination charger when the temperature is below -15 or -20 Celsius. At such temperature, on the highway, it’s very long to wam up the battery. Because of that I « cheat » and I often target in the navigation system a charging station 15 or 20 miles before the charging station where I really want to stop. If I don’t do that, the coldest cells won’t be at 21 Celsius. The algorithm is probably not conceived to manage such very cold temp.
Thanks for the fantastic video, which is extremely useful... as always. I got the Battery Conditioning update done for my 2022 AWD Ioniq 5 at my dealership in Nov 23 thanks to your info. The main reason I wanted it was for the side-effect of allowing cabin pre-heating to be successful even when the battery was at its maximum level as set and the car plugged in. I live in Norway, and it was really frustrating not to have the car cabin pre-heated on icy mornings because the battery was already full (to its 80% preset limit) and the heater was thus inactivated. When I got the car back after its BC update, then I was so delighted to see that the cabin heating worked flawlessly even when it was plugged in and the battery was at max. A real success, thanks to The Ioniq Guy... But... A couple of weeks later, an OTA software update was implemented. Since then, 2 strange things happened. 1. I was on a long drive in freezing conditions. I stopped at a beautiful scenic viewpoint overlooking one of the most beautiful fjords in Norway. When I restarted the car, it wouldn't go into gear to drive. I struggled like that for about 30 min. I got out of the car, locked it, waited 10 min, unlocked it and tried again. Still, it wouldn't go into gear... I noticed that an immobiliser dashboard icon was lit, and also that the battery conditioning icon was on (the battery was below 40% as far as I can remember). As a last ditch attempt before calling a rescue truck, I went into settings and deactivated the battery conditioning setting. Then, I restarted the car, and... Hey Presto! it went into gear and I could drive off. Total relief 😌 2. The next time that I charged the car, I noticed that the cabin pre-heating was behaving as before the update, in that it turns on but then turns off again within 30 sec if the battery is at its max set level (80% for me normally). Obviously, I'm pretty disappointed that I thought the issue was fixed but now it's back again, and I have to do the silly work around of increasing the max battery level before I start cabin heating when the car is plugged in. And the whole immobiliser thing was rather scary and disconcerting. Have you heard of anyone else having a similar situation of the heating limitation apparently being resolved but then returning to the previous factory setting? Sorry for this long-winded comment! And thanks again for your fantastic channel! Cheers Charlie
Regarding cabin heating / cooling while charging at home: I use the scheduled charging function under the EV screen to both schedule the charge session and the climate system when traveling on a road trip. It is based on departure time so I can set it for the date of my road trip, change the AC change setting to 100% and have the car both fully charged and comfortable when I leave. The 100% charge allows me to go further on the first leg of my trip without using the battery to make the cabin comfortable.
Also - it’s not just that you need to be above 20% to activate - it will turn off below as well. Mine turned off at 19% - 10 miles out from charger. At least my experience on a recent trip where I was stretching to a new and so likely fast EA charger in fairly low temps. I didn’t lose tons of heat but I definitely arrived with not a fully warmed battery. Better than without.
Wish I would have seen this before a test trip yesterday. A DCFC just came online and I wanted to check it out. The charger is an Electrify America rated at 350 kw and is located about 100 miles away. The ambient temperature was around 40F. I noted the pack temperature decreasing during the drive and was around 45F when I arrived at the charger. Charging speed was initially 50 kw and rose to 130 kw once the pack got to some higher temperature with the heaters raising the pack temperatue. So much to learn with these cars.
Very helpful, I picked up my Ioniq 5 last week and on the journey home stopped at a 350kW charger and was confused why I wasn't even getting 100kW of charge - must've been because the battery was cold as I didn't have conditioning turned on!
Good information. I think I got caught by the bluelink bug because I knew it was on! I wish on that use battery preconditioning screen they would add battery temp, ideal temp, and time needed to obtain also just let me turn it on!
Of course you mention it, but it's impossible for me to understand why only nav can enable battery conditioning. I hope they do add a button eventually!
Here in Canada with 2022 preferred LR rwd, Pre-conditioning starts at 20kms out for my trip to Banff, Alberta, which was around 0 degree when I took the trip. In the city of Vancouver, if temp is around 10-15 degrees, car starts pre- conditioning when its 10minutes or 10kms out.
I just bought a used 58kwh '21 which should have gotten the update for preconditioning in June but it didn't work. My hyundai dealer was actually not sure my car had the battery heater installed since not all german registered cars do, which would be a bummer since all here in Denmark do. But they also said that maybe the update had been done in the wrong order, so they would do the updates again and behold now it works although it never shows in the instrument cluster, but I can see that when a charging station has been entered in the navigation the energy consumption for battery management goes up to 4+kw and it charges much faster now.
Thanks! Great tips! Also very happy concerning your tip on changing battery charge levels with Bluellink app as it turns off battery conditioning function. I had this issue and could not figure out why my battery conditioning would be turned off when I had checked it on previously.
I am most grateful for your show; i have learned alot about my car. I have a question and an observation: if I am going on a longer drive, does it increase the effeciency of the battery if I use battery preconditioning--not to charge, but to increase battery effeciency? 2. Is it crazy that when we precondition the cabin the seats don't warm up? It is frigid cold and I get in and even w/ the heat and stering will warming, the seat is like ice🙄
Ah well that explains something in my trip. I stopped at one station and thought it was likely cold enough to need preconditioning but it didn’t turn on - but I ignored cos it was borderline. But when I was 20 mins out from next station and it was definitely cold and still not engaging I checked and lo and behold it was off. I had changed the charging limit by blue link the night before.
What are the steps to getting the split screen with the energy info? I can get it full screen but have not figured how to get the split screen. Also is there a way while driving to enter a charger that is more that about 30 miles away as a waypoint. I just did a road trip where I wanted to add one but the nav system would only show me nearby chargers and I had to wait till I got closer to add it so that I would get preconditioning.
It is still dependent upon the specific Magic Dock location. I have changed at one that put out 97 kW but another location that was only 42 kW. I am guessing that they will all eventually be able provide 97-100 kW.
I have learned so much from your videos me being a new i6 owner. I just found out about this utility mode thing. I prefer the way you do things because you are so detailed on your research and the way you explain things so here is my question. Have you already explained it in one of your videos? If not would you look into it and make a video about this? Thank you.
Very helpful. The only thing is the nav map update is bit slow down here in Australia. It is common that the EV charger is not on the nav map. So is it possible to manually trigger the battery pre-conditioning for DC fast charging?
I recently plugged in overnight and charged to 80% (ended up at 240 mi of range per app). When I got in the car shortly thereafter, the indicated range has dropped to 224 mi even though I hadn’t pre-warmed the cabin. Do you know if this is a known/common occurrence and what causes it?
Thank you Corbin for all of the great videos. I just purchased an ioniq 6, and so far, I really enjoy it. My question is about service departments at Hyundai dealerships. I live in Mystic, CT and I could go to one of several dealerships for service. I would imagine that some dealerships are better equipped to service electric cars than others. Is there a way to figure this out, other than looking at service department reviews? I purchased the car in the midwest and drove it home to Connecticut. So, I have had very little interaction with my local Hyundai dealership.
Outside of reviews the other metric I use is how many EVs the dealer sells. Some near me don't sell EVs at all and some sell very few, which unless I see otherwise in reviews leads me to avoid them for EV service.
Thanks for the walkthrough! Do you know if there's a way to set a minimum arrival SOC on the chargers that it plans in? I had it add chargers to my route, but it was having me arrive at 40% when there was another charger along the route that would get me closer to 15%.
Thanks for the prompt reply! I'll make sure I look at the 2023 and 2024 models. It's unfortunate the 2022 RDW doesn't precondition. The used prices are very affordable for this model.@@TheIoniqGuy
Yes it’s a damn shame and not sure why they omitted it. There’s going to be a lot of people that have no idea about this and buy one and wonder why it takes forever to charge
The VeePeak is a great dongle, I use one myself. BUT it’s very insecure (why it’s so easy to connect) so that’s another reason to always disconnect it when you are not using it.
Its good for Hyundai theyre baking these useful features into nav. There was no way i would have renewed my nav subscription once the trial ended... But with battery preconditioning and route planning with charging stops i most definitely will. Especially if they keep iterating and making it better. I've actually found the features and visuals to be better than google maps anyways, and the real time traffic adjustments seem just as good.
Question that I have seen no one answer (and I have not taken a road trip yet after knowing about the severely dorky way to precondtion to try this): I live and take road trips in nice, warm California. Does preconditioning cool the battery if it is above optimal temps? Or is this whole dance only useful for cold batteries in places with this thing called "winter"? My sense is that this only is useful for batteries colder than optimal, but haven't seen anyone confirm.
I can't get preconditioning to kick in on my car, I have activated it in my settings, chosen a charger about 20 miles away and nothing. following your guide of how to do it as well and avoiding the "what not to do"(MY23)
Lets sat its 20F outside and the DC charging station in 6 blocks away. Would you set the destination and let the car sit in the driveway turned on for a half hour until the battery is to temp?
Technically, you'd probably spend less time at the station that way but it would take you much longer over all. Much better to just go to the station straight away and precon a tiny bit for the 6 block drive. The battery will heat at the station while charging too, precon just let's you save time by using battery power to do that step in advance.
I figured that would be the case. Still learning about EV stuff. I can build 800 hp hotrods but this is all new to me. thanks for the reply. @@ApexTandem
It the car is in my driveway or garage it’s charging or charged …. If it’s 20f outside I’m starting the car 15 min early and letting it draw power from the house to run heater/defrosters. And then I have a nice warm defrosted car when it’s time to leave. Fast charging is many times more expensive than charging at home. It is also harder on the battery. So unless you can’t charge at home, you reserve DC fast charging for road trips or high mileage days. And yes I got free DC charging with the car, but my time is worth more than what free DC charging would save me vs charging at home. (It’s not worth spending 20-40 minutes to save $7-9) Now, it it was not a driveway where I can charge then yes absolutely preheat both the car and battery because again I value my time & comfort), and will gladly use few KW to both warm the car and save me 10-15 min charging.
Two quick questions: The 20 minute time required is for the amount of time it takes to warm the cells or is it to avoid overheating cells? In other words, if I’m 10 minutes from a charger, will the cells have enough time to warm up? Secondly, more of a statement but if the cells are conditioned but the EA charger sucks, I’ll probably still only get max 125 on a 350 kW charger
We noticed we don't have a "Battery Conditioning Mode" button on that menu in our 2023 Ioniq 5. Any ideas why? The 3rd button down is "Utility Mode." 😞
Not sure how I messd up but...I will t I headed out this morning and set my destination for an EA unit about 160 miles away; turned on battery preconditioning but neve got the signal that it was engaged. Arrived at the charger and pulled a measly 60kW for the first 10 minutes, finally ramped up to 165 on a 150 unit. I will try again tomorrow for a nearby unit but any hints???
Great info, as usual. I charge 95% at home but tried to use an EA last week that I've used before. Plugged in the connector, opened the app and it said" Insufficient Funds" or words to that effect. Looked at my settings and it shows Hyundai free charging to 2 years. Does anyone know the solution for this? Thanks.
I had this. Called EA support and they said to add $10 on a cc to your account. It won't be used and you can get it back if you quit EA. It was a fairly recent change and apparently intended to reduce the number of complaint calls EA receives when people go over the 30mins and get charged. I added the $10 and now the app works fine and I still get the free charging. (The app must show that you're using the 'Ioniq Plan' of course)
Hi Corbin the last update for Europe is out and in the release notes as last point is included also the wireless android auto and CarPlay. I will try and update asap but I am afraid it will be only for cncc infotainment models
I just had the update on my 2022, but it is not working. On the EV settings screen I have winter mode as it was before, but nothing that says Battery Preconditioning. Does this mean it did not get done? Thank You
I have a question. I have been searching best charging practices to prolong battery health. What I found was slow frequent charges is best, eg. Level 2 at 30amps. Does this carry over to DC charging? If I have the time, and it's a free DC charger, am I not better off leaving it charge at 75kwh instead of trying to get 350kwh? I do realize on road trips I will want the fastest charge rates to continue on. If I am just topping up to 70% for Day to day driving and I want to use DC fast charges is it better for the battery life if it is DC charging at a lower rate. I am not planning my charging sessions on this just looking to understand traction battery charging and health better.
Hi that's wrong info, you need 25degrees Celsius to get full 200+kW charging speed and preheat runs only to 21degrees. Also my Ioniq 5 have begun preheat 90km before charging station (about 1hour before) when it was minus 20-25 degrees outside. Else very good info about the new software upgrade that have not yet come to EU.
Whoops looking back at an old DCFC video you’re correct. I was remembering incorrectly. Good news though is that it takes less than 1 minute for the min temp to go from 70-75F
I recently had a very chilly day and was below 20% so no preheating. When watching the temps as it charged, I noticed a huge ramp in charge power when the battery min temp hits 20c. It might get a little faster at 25, but might also overheat faster (and have to slow down) if it starts at 25 vs 20-21. It seemed like 20c was the magic point where the faster rates unlock as the pack warms
@@ChuckvdL yes it's on stages 15,20 and 25 degree's all have higher level of charging speed. Also remember to turn off a cooling and heating in car when charging at this speeds because AC have not enough power to cool both main battery temp and inside of the car and then charging speed gonna drop faster to the end when battery getting hotter.
I took my 2022 Ioniq 5 to the dealer and they said my car is "up to date.". Still I don't have the navigation up dates installed. I called Hyundai and they said the same think. But when I go to "General Setting" in my Limited Ioniq 5 and go to SW info/update is says Preparing to install software. How do I update the navigation? The dealer and Hyundai Customer service all seem clueless.
Can you tell me what models/trims this applies to. I have a 2022 SEL RWD. Do you know if I have the capability. I thought RWD models did not. If that is true, I’d suggest updating the video to tell people that. Thanks.
I did try and use that for a 1k mile road trip in July 2022 but haven’t revisited it since. I had pretty bad luck with it not staying connected for some reason but it might be worth taking another look now that that feature has matured a more.
Is the computer heat the battery regardless of the power of the L3 charger selected? I mean, if i select a 50kw charger, will it stop the heating at a certain point, when the battery is hot enough for a 50kw charger. From time to time, i cannot find 150kw charger do I select a 50kw but i wonder if the computer heat the battery differently.
The three Genesis vehicles I've driven all turn on battery conditioning by just entering a DC fast charger destination. Just did it yesterday, you do not have to do it through POI. In my experience, it doesn't turn on immediately and takes a minute for some reason.
This has convinced me that going for a Tesla was the correct choice for me. The Kia may be a better car to drive but complication of charging in comparison to being able to put the next Supercharger in the satnav and the car does the rest to get the best charge to make driving an EV easy without hanging around is worth any other issue in the car.
I have a scenario that proves we need a conditioning button. We have a new dc station by our house. It is a month old now. So when I go there I make a charging stop further away my destination to condition and the route planning becomes junk. Ugh! I need that button cuz the map updates are slow for new stations. That will also happen on trips cuz PlugShare can find the station, but not the csr nav.
Yes I have the same scenario and the charger is not even new. I want that button too and a stop function if I change my mind. I also want it to work below 20%.
If you still have winter mode then you need to get your software updated to activate it. Do you have a 2022 RWD or AWD? If you have RWD, then you can't get battery conditioning.
My new ev nero has pre heat I Tell it going to shell to charge thats on the map Pre heat comes on afer 3 miles Put i go to new charger not on map that cheaper that near to shell I all so here the new kona will have pre heat allso a button to turn it on

Very helpful thanks. Sadly Tesla V3 still very slow (42kw yesterday after battery conditioning)
Interesting, I’ve been hearing other have been getting 100kW now. Maybe it’s still station by station. Where was this supercharger?
It is still dependent upon the specific Magic Dock location. I have changed at one that put out 97 kW but another location that was only 42 kW. I am guessing that they will all eventually be able provide 97-100 kW.
I have learned so much from your videos me being a new i6 owner. I just found out about this utility mode thing. I prefer the way you do things because you are so detailed on your research and the way you explain things so here is my question. Have you already explained it in one of your videos? If not would you look into it and make a video about this? Thank you.
Thanks, handy info.
Same here. The estimated range in the car is always lower than what the app says for me. Frustrating.
Hi, thanks for your instructive vidéos, I would like to know what app do you use with Veepeak to see the battery temperature? Thank you
You're welcome. Car Scanner
Thanks for the walkthrough! Do you know if there's a way to set a minimum arrival SOC on the chargers that it plans in? I had it add chargers to my route, but it was having me arrive at 40% when there was another charger along the route that would get me closer to 15%.
Super excited about the route planning feature described at 13:07… I’m a new owner of 2023 Ioniq 5 SEL and I’m not seeing the same user interface. 😐
nm. Getting the otta update.
One issue I can't figure out is: do the RWD Ionic 5's have preconditioning as well? Thanks for all of your great videos!
2023 and 2024 do. 2022 does not and never will
Thanks for the prompt reply!
Hope we get the october update soon in the UK. hate that we have to wait so long for it.
Seems like Europe is always a bit behind the US releases for whatever reason. That really sucks.
It is out now for download in the EU.
Seems like they targeted colder regions like Canada and Finland first.
In the new 2024 Kona battery preconditioning will be available :)
Even if it wouldn't be a big of jump, they should add this to every niro that has the battery heater.
Question: Can I start battery preconditioning on my Ioniq 6 remotely thru iPhone app?
The VeePeak is a great dongle, I use one myself.
BUT it’s very insecure (why it’s so easy to connect) so that’s another reason to always disconnect it when you are not using it.
Its good for Hyundai theyre baking these useful features into nav. There was no way i would have renewed my nav subscription once the trial ended... But with battery preconditioning and route planning with charging stops i most definitely will. Especially if they keep iterating and making it better.
I've actually found the features and visuals to be better than google maps anyways, and the real time traffic adjustments seem just as good.
Can these cars ever pre-warm the battery for departure in order to maximise range during the winter?
Question that I have seen no one answer (and I have not taken a road trip yet after knowing about the severely dorky way to precondtion to try this): I live and take road trips in nice, warm California. Does preconditioning cool the battery if it is above optimal temps? Or is this whole dance only useful for cold batteries in places with this thing called "winter"? My sense is that this only is useful for batteries colder than optimal, but haven't seen anyone confirm.
You are correct. The preconditioning function is only for warming. The battery pack is also cooled when needed but not in advance for faster charging.
I can't get preconditioning to kick in on my car, I have activated it in my settings, chosen a charger about 20 miles away and nothing. following your guide of how to do it as well and avoiding the "what not to do"(MY23)
What's the outside air temperature?
Can you charge and keep your car running and sit inside while charging. 2023 ioniq 5 single motor?

(It’s not worth spending 20-40 minutes to save $7-9)
Now, it it was not a driveway where I can charge then yes absolutely preheat both the car and battery because again I value my time & comfort), and will gladly use few KW to both warm the car and save me 10-15 min charging.
Ciao, pensi sia possibile attivare il precondizionamento della batteria sulla mia Ioniq 5 My2023 Innovation RWD?
FYI: the Genesis app won’t let you adjust the preconditioning setting via the app. (You can adjust charge limits tho)
Bought an AWD 24 Ioniq 6. My range droooooped dramatically this month in AR. 80% charge gets me 184 est miles. Thoughts? Normal?
Normal. I’m getting 180-200
Two quick questions:
The 20 minute time required is for the amount of time it takes to warm the cells or is it to avoid overheating cells? In other words, if I’m 10 minutes from a charger, will the cells have enough time to warm up?
Secondly, more of a statement but if the cells are conditioned but the EA charger sucks, I’ll probably still only get max 125 on a 350 kW charger
We noticed we don't have a "Battery Conditioning Mode" button on that menu in our 2023 Ioniq 5. Any ideas why? The 3rd button down is "Utility Mode." 😞
Not sure how I messd up but...I will t
I headed out this morning and set my destination for an EA unit about 160 miles away; turned on battery preconditioning but neve got the signal that it was engaged. Arrived at the charger and pulled a measly 60kW for the first 10 minutes, finally ramped up to 165 on a 150 unit. I will try again tomorrow for a nearby unit but any hints???
Do you have a best guess on what the average winter range will be on the Kia ev9
Whatever their rated ranges are, lower that by 25-30% and that should be pretty close
@@geoffwilson2534 Thsnk you so much.
I have to swipe “start charge” on EA app before plugging in. Or I get the same.
Thank You
Btw, I have the same bug with Kia Niro, that is when you change the max charge state from the app, DC or AC, pre conditioning is turned off.
It doesn't make a significant enough difference to be worth stressing about.
Yep, I second that. Battery min needs to be at 25C to get full charge power
Whoops looking back at an old DCFC video you’re correct. I was remembering incorrectly. Good news though is that it takes less than 1 minute for the min temp to go from 70-75F
@@TheIoniqGuy yeap I have also notice if it's very cold weather it helps to deacrease your speed to get up battery temp faster
Mine works just fine navigating to a charging station.
Thanks.
Your 2022 doesn’t but all subsequent RWDs do
Hi Corbin. Did you know that the new Kona EV has a button to activate the battery preconditioning manually?
I did not! The 2024?
@@TheIoniqGuy Yes. There are videos on TH-cam about it.
What I would like to know is can I precondition the battery if I don't have an active Bluelink subscription.
Does that prevent the in car nav from working?
Have you ever used your OBD II in conjunction with ABRP inside Android Auto? If so, would you consider it a possible future tutorial?
I did try and use that for a 1k mile road trip in July 2022 but haven’t revisited it since. I had pretty bad luck with it not staying connected for some reason but it might be worth taking another look now that that feature has matured a more.
Thanks!
I have conditioning on in the settings of my Ioniq but on the blue link app it always says it’s off
Can you read if O.T.S.'s have been received by your Ioniq 5 with the Veepeak?
I don’t believe so
È possibile per ioniq5 58kwh Rwd 2023?
What is the TSB update number for the DC charging/battery conditioning update? After watching this video I don't hear you say it.
Is there a route planning TSB update I need the dealer to install?
So to be clear: If you're using Carplay / Android Auto for navigation, there's no way to activate preconditioning?
Sadly no
Eesh! I guess you can follow gmaps on phone not plugged into the car and have the in car navigation running on quiet to activate it 🤔
Does this work for rwd 2022?
2022 RWD doesn’t have battery conditioning unfortunately
The three Genesis vehicles I've driven all turn on battery conditioning by just entering a DC fast charger destination. Just did it yesterday, you do not have to do it through POI. In my experience, it doesn't turn on immediately and takes a minute for some reason.
Interesting. Maybe the Genesis nav system is better optimized than the Hyundai is.
My experience has been similar, but that damm 20% minimum has bit me badly.
I can't but agree with it. The proposed workaround with navigation to any other DC fast station nearby is awkward.
What if you don't have a battery conditioning option in the settings screen...
Do you have winter mode?
@@TheIoniqGuy yes, that's already always on
If you still have winter mode then you need to get your software updated to activate it. Do you have a 2022 RWD or AWD? If you have RWD, then you can't get battery conditioning.
@@TheIoniqGuy 2022 RWD, and ahh thanks for letting me know, that's a shame =/ does "Winter Mode" even do anything?
Reminder: Drivers of Ionic5 RWD cars can skip this since we have been written out of these software updates (for preconditioning)
I have a rwd car but have the preconditioning option in my car settings though. :/ (never used a dc charger to test)
@@DreadpirateflappyWith 2023 RWD models a battery warmer was added as well as the preconditioning function. The 2022 RWD did not have battery warmer.
