    Thank you very much, Daniel and Marie, for the lesson. At first, I thought topic would be simple but I was wrong. the lesson has given me some really delicate knowledge about adjectives. For the first time I know that there are gradable and ungradable adjectives and some adjectives require strict position to noun.
    like any vocabulary in English, an adjective has many different meanings. Every time when I cannot find the right meaning of a word in sentence, I usually resort to the Cambridge dictionary. It offers many examples with as many contexts so I finally can find the right meaning of the word. I am very pleased to know that you also suggest the Cambridge dictionary to the leaners in this lesson.
    Goodbye and see you next time in your Adverb topic.

    Position adjectives:
    -Before the noun
    🌇Today was a quiet afternoon in the city.
    -After the noun
    🍎The apple is ripe
    🍿 The popcorn pack is full.
    Degrees of the adjective:
    💤Today I am very sleepy.
    💘 The couple was really in love. (Without degree)
    Change of meaning
    ✊ A closed hand to help
    🙅 The girl was closed to share her feelings.

    could you please teach me the different between ungradable and non-gradable

    • @Oxfordonlineenglish1
      @Oxfordonlineenglish1  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Duy. Some adjectives are gradable. That means they can have different levels. For example, ‘nice’ and ‘interesting’ are gradable. Something can be more interesting, or less interesting. There are different levels of ‘interesting’. Some adjectives are ungradable. That means that they’re binary-either ‘yes’ or ‘no’. For example, ‘unique’ is ungradable. Either something is unique, or it isn’t. You can’t have different levels of uniqueness. It’s a yes-or-no property.
      Ungradable adjectives have two types. Firstly, there are words with a strong meaning, like ‘delicious’, ‘exhausted’ or ‘furious’. Secondly, there are words with an absolute meaning, like ‘unique’, ‘true’ or ‘possible’. When we talk about ungradable adjectives, we mean both of these types.
      We're happy to help you in an online lesson as well if you'd like specific advice: www.oxfordonlineenglish.com/about-our-online-english-teachers.

      Hi Juan, these are both acceptable! When we say 'transport cost', 'transport' does function like an adjective in this situation, as it describes the kind of cost. Therefore, it becomes a noun phrase. So it's up to you, you can say 'variable transport cost' or 'variable cost of transport'. Hope this helps you!

    The problem is main. I think about the passive voice in it sentence. What is the noun? if the problem is the noun. Is it a sentence just to say how important is it a problem. Using a direct identification of the problem like "fixing the car is .... problem", I am not an expert on grammar but I think would be more clear if the subject is clearly identified in the sentence. I am learning, is really helpful to verify in each sentence the subject is first and clearly specified, and try to choose first the subject, the object, or the passive voice, which makes it more complicated to do sentences and can produce confusion in learners like me. thanks

    How to know types of adjectives whether gradable or ungradeable in a writing

    • @Oxfordonlineenglish1
      @Oxfordonlineenglish1  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jamshaid, with these types of adjectives it's best to try and remember them. A good general rule is if it's an adjective that already increases the level of something, for example 'freezing' and 'frigid' are already an increased level of 'cold', they are ungradable. Try to make a list of these types of adjectives so you can study and try to remember them.

      @@Oxfordonlineenglish1 Adjectives with different meanings before and after the nouns - this is the title of the grammar topic. There are two sentences: “the investigation found that the named individuals and firms collided to decide who would win contracts.” And 2) “the certificate is issued to the individuals named below and must be returned before May 20”. That’s the example the book called “work on your grammar C1” provided to the topic. I don’t think there is no difference between them. Otherwise why would it write there?..

    Hi there! May I ask a question? I wonder which one is right and why? Thanks.Studies have shown that the right and left ear______sound differently. A produce B process.

      @Oxfordonlineenglish1  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Melvin, here you can think about the function of an ear. Does it create sounds on its own (produce)? Or does it interpret sounds from outer sources (process)? The best thing to do here is think about what each word means and try to find synonyms. Hope this helps you!

    How do I know when to use adjectives or possessive " 's" ? Do I say "I painted the garage door or I painted the garage's door"? This is just one example. There are many words I don't know whether to use adjectives or possessives.

    • @Oxfordonlineenglish1
      @Oxfordonlineenglish1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there. It's more common to use the adjective form in this situation (the garage door, etc.). It depends more on the context and what you are trying to explain. If you'd like to learn more about the specifics you're welcome to book a short lesson with one of our teachers. They would be happy to explain this in more detail. Hi Zaid, yes, 'brave' describes the noun form 'few' in this situation. 'Few' here implies 'few people'.

    How would someone know whether it is gradable or upgradable?

    • @Oxfordonlineenglish1
      @Oxfordonlineenglish1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there. It's best to think about which types of adjectives can have different levels. Studying different gradable adjectives can help you understand patterns to begin differentiating gradable and ungradable adjectives.

    Could you please explain what the gradable and ungradable adjectives are? I couldn't understand them clearly.

    • @Oxfordonlineenglish1
      @Oxfordonlineenglish1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gradable = can have different levels. Take 'hot' as an example. If you have two pots of water, one can be hotter, or less hot. There are different degrees - literally - of heat.
      Ungradable = binary, cannot have different levels. Take 'perfect' as an example. Either something is perfect, or it's not. There's no middle ground. Something can't be half perfect.
      Hope this helps!

    Thank you both teachers, but I have one point. Well, for us learning English it is very important that the voice of the teacher sound friendly to our ears. Daniel's voice is soft and sounds good but unfortunately his partner's voice is very sharp and fragments of some words disappear.

    • @Oxfordonlineenglish1

      Thanks for the feedback, Zaqu! However, it's important to be able to understand a variety of English accents and sounds! If you travel to an English-speaking country, you will not have the option to only listen to one type of sound!

      Hi Sakshi, a 'gradable' adjective means it can be used with words like 'very', 'less', 'more', etc. They can have higher or lower levels. An adjective that is not 'gradable', or 'ungradable', means we can't change the level using superlatives, comparatives, or 'very'. There are different words to be used with 'ungradable' adjectives like 'really'. Hope this helps you!
