    The difficulty with flexible words such as aim - I didn't know what to use. I think you need a board to explain some points- oral explanation sometimes is not enough

    For + -ing: reason
    We use for + the -ing form of a verb to refer to the reason for something:
    You should talk to Jane about it. You know, she’s famous for being a good listener.

    Thank you for this lesson. Could you explain in the level 5, there has a sentence "It's warm for December, so there's not as much demand for winter clothing as you'd normally see at this time". if used "you'd" why "see" to be used instead of "seen"? Many thanks!

    • @Oxfordonlineenglish1
      @Oxfordonlineenglish1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question, Jiayan! We would use 'seen' if we used 'would have'. Here, it is only 'as you would' without 'have' because it is talking about an imaginary situation. We have a lesson on 'would' which might also help you! You can see it here: www.oxfordonlineenglish.com/would-modal-verbs.

      @Oxfordonlineenglish1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Glad you liked it, Roland! We use 'for + verb+ing' when we talk about a function of something. For example: 'This spoon is used for serving soup'. That is the only function of the spoon. Another example is: 'The truck is for making deliveries'. That is the only use for the truck: making deliveries. Hope that helps!

    Hi, your video is so interesting and helpful, but I'm still get confused about reason and function. The woman said that the reason is why someone do something and you can only use for+noun, not for + ing. However on the man part, it was explained "she developed tools for analysing", and she is someone. In my opinion it shoud be only "she developed tools to analyze". Correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks in advance

    • @Oxfordonlineenglish1
      @Oxfordonlineenglish1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Rahman. Both can be correct. It depends on your perspective and the context. The first (tool to analyse) expresses the idea of why she developed the tool. The second (tool for analysing) expresses the idea that the only function of the tool is analysing data. It does not do anything else. So it depends on what you'd like to convey. Hope this helps you!

    Why after to you put ing?

    • @Oxfordonlineenglish1
      @Oxfordonlineenglish1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good question, Ravit. In this situation, 'to' is the preposition linked to 'forward', and this modifies 'looking'. We 'look forward to' nouns, and 'seeing' is the noun form of the activity here. For example: 'I look forward to speaking with you' and 'I'm looking forward to speaking with you' are correct. The rule you are thinking of applies to infinitives in the present simple. For example: 'I like to run'. Here, 'I like to running' would not be correct. Does that help?

      Hi Mohamed, 'them' is a pronoun, specifically a third person plural object pronoun. It refers to a group of people or things. It replaces nouns that are the objects of sentences. For example: 'I went shopping with my family,' or, 'I went shopping with them'. Hope this helps you!

    Excellent video but I have a question. On Level 5, in the first sentence, could I replace "admit to us" with "admit us"?

      We're glad you enjoyed the lesson! Good question. No, we cannot use 'admit us'. The action of 'admitting' something is happening 'to us' in the sentence, or directed 'to us'. Therefore, we need the 'to'. Hope this helps you!

    To me, Level 3 “Jogging is good for your health” is the most difficult as you said it is a fixed phrase and not to be really explained.
    And when I wrote the above sentence, I was not even sure whether I should write “to me” or “for me”?

      It's best to simply memorize these types of phrases. For example 'good for you', 'good for me', 'good for your health', 'good for the environment', etc. Thanks for watching!

      Oxford Online English Thank you for your reply. But should I say “For me this is difficult” or “To me this is difficult”? Maybe you can make a new video about that😀.
