Had to smile when you mentioned how wimpy the 410 was with a slug. It reminded me of something that happened when we were out fishing. Back in the late 60's I was only young but was fishing with Dad and a couple of his mates in a a 18 foot boat about a 1/3rd of a mile of shore in Adelaide metro waters. We were doing well on the King George Whiting and had a couple of berley pots out with frozen blocks of tuna meat/cockles mash with added oil. All of a sudden the fish went off and we assumed it was a seal. Normally once they investigate you just pick up and move to the next spot, but this day decided to stay another 10 minutes until 1/2 time in the football match on the radio. Well just as we were starting to get organized there was this big thump on the hull of the boat, they looked over the side and saw a shark. No ordinary shark it was longer than the boat by quite a bit and it was nudging the hull. Normally you start the motor up and they piss of but this bugger must have thought that he was bigger so it didn't matter. My dad to stingy to cut the rope for the anchor grabs the ancient 410 that lived in the boat and loads a slug and shoots the shark {it's back was out of the water} the slug just bounced off but fortunately the shark didn't like that and took off at warp speed. The cartridge was probably rotten from age but that tail slap I will never forget. After this he took out the shotgun and carried an old chopped up 303 mk1 Lee Enfield instead. This was in the days before Rodney Fox was well known.
I appreciate the distinction between "fun" and "good", because it can oft be very true. Dealing with something's quirks can be half the fun of the experience
I had a Liege made SS .410. Was a lot of fun, but as you say expensive to feed. The bores were corroded, but it was well engrave and so very light to carry around.
One of my first guns (still have it) was a Springfield M6 .22/.410. I found that the .410 pellet count got too thin to reliably kill small game at 25yds. Even with 7.5 shot and 3" shells. Keep your shots within 20yds and you'll reliably drop small game birds like grouse or quail. Also a 3" 000 buckshot load of 5 pellets like Federal and Winchester make is suitable for close range shots on small deer or as a last ditch bear defense round. Obviously not my first choice but far superior to the lightly constructed slugs.
My favorite small game shell. I have a old .22LR/.410 OU made by Stevens, before Savage bought them out and sold the gun as the Savage 24 (now modernized as the Savage 42). I’ve taken a few snowshoe hare and grouse with it. I actually like the reduced velocity of the 3” shells, less likely to have a supersonic crack with it (the steel shot advertising 1300 FPS were significantly louder than the lead shot shells).
Exactly..... down range..... 410 slug is a heavier projectile but runs at glacial pace... 243 is a conplete waist of time as a cartridge..... but I don't deny it's better than a 410 slug past 25m.

Man, I'm so sorry. Here in the US, .410 can be had for 40 cents a round or less.
