    I've been pretty excited about these paints ever since I heard about them last year! I also find it impressive that it's just three friends who are trying to build some cool products for a hobby they love and throw their hat into the ring with the big boys. If nothing else, it is quite admirable and I plan to pitch in some to their Kickstarter to hopefully get their business off the ground (I also saw a breakdown of what their expenses are going to look like throughout the kickstarter, very impressed by the transparency)!

    I've been kind of following Ultracryl for a while now, ever since I saw a comment about them in one of your older videos, so it's nice to get something like this.
    If it's anything like Pro Acryl and Kimera, then that's good in my book.
    Speaking of Pro Acryl, looks like you've run into it's weird aversion to raw plastic/smooth surfaces. Bases are kind of deceptive, because although they have those bumps, the micro-texture is still like that of raw plastic. It really needs to be used over a primed or lightly sanded surface, otherwise it kind of acts like paint does on an over-saturated/glossy wet palette paper.

    • @RisingApe
      @RisingApe  ปีที่แล้ว

      Aye it’s a funny one that, all the paints were painted onto raw plastic, only the pro Acryl beaded up. But as you say that’s not a bad point on them really as it would be better over primer

  • @andreaslinke2970
    @andreaslinke2970 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have tested PRO Acryl (positively referenced here several times) and was rather astonished how much rougher the surface of the painted patch (Bold pyrrole red, MPA-003) felt in comparison to Vallejo model color or AK 3rd Gen. painted test patches. Even rougher than Andrea (NAC-33) or Abteilung 502 (ABT-1125) and already noticeable on the wet palette. For me an indication of rather coarse pigment.
    Would be interesting to know about the quality of ultracrylic paint in this regard.

    • @RisingApe
      @RisingApe  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am no expert but the texture can also come from the mattering agents and how they are applied/ thinned etc. I haven’t used Pro Acryl pyrol Red but their burnt red is one of my favourite colours and I use their Jade and White all the time too.

    • @RisingApe

    • @CAPTAINCAPSLOCK111
      @CAPTAINCAPSLOCK111 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      hi, phil from ten01 here! All cobalt pigments are really expensive, especially in the last two years the price of everything cobalt went up. Since we get the pigments directly from the manufacturers, we still get a pretty good deal. Some mix calculation later, we can still offer it in the Kickstarter price. By the way, all manufacturers of cobalt ceased production of the original violets PV14 and PV49 (dark and light variants). One manufacturer is still producing it, but under a new pigment number PV92. By the way ... the only industrial use besides artist paint of cobalt violet is to add it to white plastic window frames (in tiny amounts) in order to cancel out the yellowing of the PVC. Violet is complementary to yellow, ;-) so, no wonder why almost nobody manufactures it anymore.

      @ten01_labs ปีที่แล้ว

      I just had a look at them, and I would agree. Looks like they had the same wishes and ideas. We started at 2018 and they already at 2017.
      As far as I can see, they have 16 single pigmented paints.
      We are providing 24 and some very nice pigments from the artist space which leads to the biggest color gamut possible (excluding toxic pigments) and some of them are much more opaque than the regular pigments.
      So I see an USP for the Ultracryl paints in these cases. But I like what I see there.

    • @iandelaney8049
      @iandelaney8049 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ten01_labs this is the issue, there are so many brands out there now it’s hard to know who’s doing what and too easy to make a claim that you’ve (not saying you haha) done it first.

    • @kerr_b
      @kerr_b ปีที่แล้ว

      The biggest difference here appears to be that Ultracryl acts more like a traditional acrylic paint, while Instar is extremely fluid to the point they act more like thick inks. Imo out of the two, Ultracryl appears to (so far) be the better product for the average hobbyist.

    These pigments are absolutely in other miniature paint lines such as Citadel and Vallejo if you know where to look

    • @RisingApe
      @RisingApe  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh for sure, in fact many paints use the same pigments, but GW/ Vallejo don’t say which pigments so you can’t tell. Where as these, Kimera, S75 artist and various other art brands list the pigments. If you jump into the Ultra Series Discord they are really transparent about what’s in the paints, down to the binders and solvents. It’s interesting to see and very welcome to see the transparency.

    • @iandelaney8049
      @iandelaney8049 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RisingApe i think the main reason it’s not told is that there is this incorrect assumption (not even sure where it started) that the finer ground the pigment, the better it is at coverage…but this is all complete horse. It’s a massive combination of factors that go into it along with the binders and other additives.
      Even the binders don’t make a huge amount of difference to the coverage and are largely there to be a carrier for the pigment, the more dense the binder, the less pigment it can carry but the better protected it is and the opposite for a less dense binder. Then you need to couple in the refractive index that can affect the final colour too.
      This and the fickle nature of painters themselves. Everyone has a favourite and is the yardstick they use to measure other brands, to the point where everything else is crap because it’s not the same.
      That’s the hardest part of it all, anyone can make a paint to be perfectly honest with you. It’s not quite rocket science 🙂

    • @RisingApe
      @RisingApe  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@iandelaney8049 you’re right of course that lots of things affect the paint properties, not least the pigment itself. I think the main reason brands don’t share the pigments is to avoid sharing their recipes and to create exclusivity. If you’re interested in Ultra Series and their components recommend their discord, chat to them and they will happily explain better than I can.

    • @ten01_labs
      @ten01_labs ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wouldn't entirely agree with that.
      Let's take the orange pigment PO73, for example. I could not find such a bright orange as PO73 either at vallejo or GW. At most, PO36 is used there. And if you look at the price difference, it's also clear why.
      Of course, we don't only use these high-performance pigments, but also the usual suspects. There's nothing to be said against that. But if you want the brightest orange, to stay with the example, you need PO73. Toning down saturated colors is always possible, but no matter how you mix, a color will not become more saturated.
      And we have several pigments in our line you don't see in miniature paints, but in the artist sector like Schmincke for example.
      Cheers,
      Marcel

      @@ten01_labs i think may end up agreeing to disagree on this one. Having conducted enough investigations into what pigments are used in paints, alot of them utilise similar pigments since larger manufacturers buy them in bulk. A good example would be GW, Nocturnal and Coat D’Arms all being made by HMG. As for the Orange example, Troll Slayer Orange would fit the bill for PO73.
      Even Vallejo use single pigments for those RAL colours that are labelled as such, just for coverage reasons (like nearly all other brands) they include more TiO2 and Calcium Carbonate which leads to a lightening of the colour (which you’d know anyway) since that’s what their customers are after.

      The cobalt turquoise is the PG50 pigment. There is a green variant and a turquoise one. The green variant is near the regular PG7, so not that outstanding, but the turquoise is really nice. And the PG50 is very opaque.

      hi, phil from ten01 here! Naming of cobalt pigments is a little bit all over the place. There are two basic variants, cobalt turquoise light (PG50&PB28) and cobalt turquoise dark (PB36). PB28 can also be the regular cobalt blue and PG36 is often also referred to as cerulean blue which is also PB35. This comes from the chemical composition, if there is chromium added or titanium or tin... we are using PG50 (which can also be a variant of cobalt green ;-) ) which is often also referred to as cobalt teal. confused? haha

    New post from Ten01 Labs said they need to include a warning about the titanium in their white paint. What happened to the focus on non toxic pigments? I’m not a brush licker but I do expect people to keep their word. What else have they changed without clarity?

      We are using PY184 Bismuth Vanadate Yellow. It's absolutely amazing pigment. It's not used from the most miniature companys because of the price of the pigment I would bet. It's really expensive and if you want to achieve maximum coverage you need a lot of it. For this reason you can find this pigment in the artist paint ranges like Schmincke etc.

    1:50 I am not convinced that is er strong coloration between well performing pigments and how expensive they are. There are many different reasons why a pigment is expensive.

    • @RisingApe
      @RisingApe  ปีที่แล้ว

      💯 but certainly high saturation and luminosity is one indicator. Another would be light fastness or chemical properties like weather resistance for example too.

    • @Wijkert
      @Wijkert ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RisingApe You said: "paints that extent very well and stay saturated are a indication of expensive pigments". I think it is more a indication that the paints are highly pigmented or that the pigments used have a high tinting strength. There are pigments that are very expensive, but don't have great properties and visa versa. Maybe high saturation is more an indicator that less pigments are used or that they are single pigment paints. Also there are very expensive pigments, with a bad light fastness. Again I would not relate those properties to the cost of the pigment.

    • @RisingApe
      @RisingApe  ปีที่แล้ว

      There are always exceptions to every rule but it’s a fair comment perhaps it would be more accurate to say AN indicator but certainly not the only

    • @Wijkert
      @Wijkert ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RisingApe I wouldn't relate it to cost at all. Instead maybe more to quality of the pigment and thus also quality of the paint. I think the reason that we are talking about cost, is because the guys that are making these paints, are talking about cost. They have to think about their unique selling points and say something like "we use more expensive pigments than other hobby paints manufacturers". Since nobody except for Kimera reveals what pigments are in their paints, this statement is unverifiable. So for me personally, it is best to leave it out of a review or at least make the distinction between what they claim and what you think of the paint after using it.

    • @ten01_labs
      @ten01_labs ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, you are right, a high price don't makes a good pigment. But on the other hand, there are very good pigments out there (here I focus on properties like opacity, brilliancy, saturation etc.) that are not used in the regular miniature paints but can be found in artist paints. Mostly used in oil paints. These are not used because of the very high price.
      That's the only point we wanted to make. For sure we are also using the standard pigments and some of them are quite cheap, some not. For example for a brown you don't need to use a high performance yellow and the brightest super expensive red to mix it. There are very good pigments that do a great job here. But if you want the brightest and most saturated possible orange, there is a pigment you can use, but it's an expensive one. 🙂

    Nice vid as always!
    A paint that has/is a Pro Acryl / Kimera combo quality, that does sound intriguing indeed!
    I'm with you regarding the thickness. I do prefer paints that I can/have to thin, but not as thick as the Kimera paints. That said, I do LoVe the PA paints, they're amazing! So maybe I'm wrong in this sentiment? The only drawback that I've noticed so far with PA, is when using them on a wet palette, they can become very runny, very easily/quick and I can't say I ever found a proper fix to this, except use them with a well palette.
    The price/ml seems very fair (let's see how it adds up with VAT and shipping). My only question is, do I need yet another paint range? And do I actually have the space to store them somewhere (especially since I did pledge for the 72x TTC paints...)?
    edit: Don't know if you have the final design of the bottles. But the ones that you got, are they the same thickness as normal dropper bottles? Or like the PA ones?
    I'm wondering if I might be able to store them in my MiG wall racks. (www.migjimenez.com/en/accessories/333-17-ml-ammo-storage-system.html)
    edit2: Seems the bottles have the same width as Molotow paints (21.5mm, Vallejo/AK bottles are 24.3mm), but are 20 mm shorter. (-:
