This was by far the easiest and cheapest way to do this project. My shelves we're about $23 a piece to make as opposed to the hundreds of dollars per shelf you would spend on Etsy for custom shelves of the same size. Wish I could post a picture, they came out great! I posted your video on my IG story after the post of my first completed shelf for people to find. Thanks so much for making the best and most helpful floating shelf video!
The first half of the th-cam.com/users/postUgkx3ICSK6nSknaL_45CU2NmFSoXjarGMDiJ book is everything about wood: types, tools, finishes, setting up shop etc. The second half is all about doing projects for inside and outside of the home. The color pictures are helpful. After reading a dozen of these types of books, this is probably the best overall (layout, color photos, plans). Only detraction is that many of the projects use a table saw/router/planer, which are usually expensive and take up space, so the plans are less friendly to newcomers and the budget conscious. But I know I can use a drill, circular saw or a jigsaw to make the projects.
With the 2x2 support only being 1.5” sticking out, doesn’t this allow for the shelf to eventually bend downward a bit, especially once you place things on the shelf? I’m having a hard time seeing how this would last awhile.
THANK YOU! This IS THE BEST video on these shelves!! (Mine cost more than $20 LOL BUT I opted for Poplar instead of pine) we did 3 on either side of our mantle and they came out gorgeous!! Thank you so much!! 👍👍👍👍👍
I just made this shelf to go under my tv mounted on the wall. I have my router sitting on it. Drilled a hole to run the cord through it. It turned out nice 👍🏽. Thanks ☺️
@@samyraestrada26 I wouldn’t put more than 25 lbs on it. It’s pretty sturdy but remember it has a piece of wood and I have 4 screws supporting the shelf.
I would probably think the max weight would be 50-75lbs, however, shelves like this are not meant for things that are that heavy, Nick Naks, Towels, cups, display items and such, your not going to be storying 300lb weights or anything. so just use logic and reasoning. The weakest point of this shelf will be the screws that hold the self to the 2x2 because you have only a thin area between the screw and the edge of the board, you could strength it a bit by clueing the whole top edge then screw it down thus adding more resistance to the weak points. but this is definitely not meant for heavy weights over 100lbs. also the wider the shelf, the weaker it will be on the front edge. think gravity is always pulling down. hope this helps.
Why is it that people always have something negative about your channel l love it. I like you don’t have a workshop and that sometimes your uploads are simple! It called rehab for a reason. Keep up the good work 💕👏🏾💕
I swear your diy’s are always amazing but your thought process and the way you execute things always blows my mind! You make it look so effortless! Also, you could try putting the rope in a mesh bag and just tossing it in your washing machine to get rid of the smell. Love that little elevator scene with you whispering to yourself “gentlegentlegentle” lol!! 4:15
How do the 1x8’s (actual depth .75) sit flush on either side of the 2x2 (actual depth 1.75) on the back end if the front of the shelf is a 1x4 (3.75 actual width)? You’d be left with a half inch gap. Is the top half on the shelf just “sitting” on the 2x2 with a half inch gap underneath the 2x2?

I need something like this in my living room for my TV. With your measurements, how big of a TV do you think this would accommodate to float over? How about weight? How much weight can this shelf hold?
Hi is it possible to add cleefs (not sure about spelling) for extra support on the anchoring wood? Also is it possible to do the shelves your way with a less thicker (height) shelf and a shorter width (less protruding out)?
Hello there. Thanks for sharing this video. I am a big fan and an amateur DIY'er. Will be attempting to make these shelves for our living room wall. I do have a question though. As I was noting down the dimensions, I noticed that there may be a gap of around 1/2 inch between the top of shelf and the wall frame ? If so, how did you handle that or is my math wrong ?
I know your question is 3 years old lol, but you’re absolutely correct. I wish they would’ve said what their solution to this was because obviously 1+1+2 is 4, the same height as the front of the shelf, but of course lumber is a quarter of an inch smaller meaning the total for the back of shelf is 3.25” whereas the front of the shelf is 3.75”. I assume their solution to this was just to have the top of the shelf “sit” on the 2x2 with a half inch gap below that. Not exactly ideal for a shelf that likely won’t hold much weight to begin with. I suppose you could use 3.5” inch screws that would be long enough to “reach” the bottom half of the shelf past the gap.
Bonjour pour commencer je voulais vous dire que j'adore ce que vous faites... une petite question derrière les l'etagere est-ce une tapisserie ou du carrelage pourriez-vous me donner la marque du produit svp
Going ahead and spend a little extra money and ditch the 2x2 and use 2x4's. Over a long period, I would be worried with the single 2x2 with one screw in it per attachment point. 1:32
If the goal is to be as easy as possible, and only have to make standard cuts, your idea won't work. You'd have to rip the 2x4, given that it's width is 3.5". The 2x2 fits just fine. A majority of the force is pushed toward the wall anyway. The screws will hold securely.
Out of curiosity, i was at my lokal DIY centre yesterday, and for the wood alone it would be almost €240, which equates to $265, not including the charge for the use of their panel saw. Wood is expensive here, damn. 5:51
Hello! I’ve been watching videos to learn how to make a floating a shelf and I think yours is the best! I am planning to follow exactly what you did. I just had one question, if I want my shelf to be a little higher, would I simply modify the 7 1/4 measurement to say 10 1/4 if I wanted it to be 6.5 in high? I know it’s a stupid question but this is the first time I do anything like this and am scared of making a mistake 😓. Thank you so much in advance and love your video!!
We give the terminology as it appears in stores, but we account for the difference when making the project. So you can be assured that when we say a 1x6, even though it's actually 3/4 x 5 1/2 you should be using a 1x6.

You guys have the best videos. All the info and steps are in the videos and y’all don’t do those lengthy intros that everyone on TH-cam does.
Pretty cool the only thing is that this project doesn’t cost $20 box the lumber is not cheap that all plus stain etc
With the 2x2 support only being 1.5” sticking out, doesn’t this allow for the shelf to eventually bend downward a bit, especially once you place things on the shelf? I’m having a hard time seeing how this would last awhile.
Seems adding a French cleat using hardwood like red oak is the way to go
also lets you easily remove the shelf later if need be
I love you two. I built my son & wife the dining room table following your easy step by step video!!! Thank you guys very much!!!

How much was it
You could eliminate the wood filler by using pocket holes and a French cleat can be used to hang the shelf. Just an option. Great project!
