  • It has been non stop over here with my laundry room makeover and I cannot wait to reveal the entire space to you. Unfortunately that is not until August but I can share some of the DIY’s I’m implementing into the space. Today I’m going to show you how I created these gorgeous jumbo DIY floating shelves. I hope you love them as much as I do! Remember that if you want to customize them for your space, change the measurements, switch up the stain color or paint! Get creative! Love you guys, stay rad xx.

Now that's how to make a DIY video! Precise and to the point with fantastic and clever ideas on how to make the shelves. My wife has been wanting me to make floating shelves for her for a long time and now I know how to. Thanks so much for posting this video. 4:53

Love your projects! :) A tip for hanging these types of shelves (or cabinets) in the future is to temporarily screw in a couple of pieces of wood to the wall as "ledges", then you can sit the back of your heavier shelf (or cabinet) on it while you attach it to the wall. You'll have one or two screw holes to fill after, but it makes it a lot easier for one person to hang stuff.

@@LivingtoDIYwithRachelMetz you could also partially nail in a couple finish nails and rest the frame directly on them. Once you put the plywood bottom on it will cover the holes from the finish nails and you won't need to fill them. I've put up crown moulding alone using this method.

Great work! As someone else mentioned, try using temp ledges to help the weight or use the washing machine with some props to hold up the bottom shelf install, then use the bottom shelf with props to install the higher shelf after.

Very impressive that you were able to put up a 10' shelf brace by yourself. It is encouraging to see that even something that long can be done by yourself. It doesn't hurt that you worked in the shot at 2:05. :-)

@@sophiew1967 my point wasn't that she was smart enough or capable but a 10ft shelf is long, heavy and acward to work with. If you think you can do it, give it a a try and post it and see if you could do it as easy as she did it. I'll wait.

I made these shelves and put them in my laundry room using your instructions with my own measurements I did three shelves on one wall and a small shelf connected to a cabinet over the washer and dryer on the other wall. I watched many videos on how to make floating shelves but yours by far was the best. Thanks

Good job. It's nice to see women taking a hands on approach to home improvements. If I were a female I would want to know how to create and fix things instead of relying on someone.
If I have a daughter I will teach her the importance of self reliance. I have a 2 1/2 year son but as a parent both men and women should pass on their skills to their offspring. I plan on teaching my son and other child if i have one how to cook also as I am in the culinary industry. Knowing how to cook, fix household issues and some basic auto mechanics are a must.
    Sorry for the rant.

Living to DIY with Rachel Metz sounds like your dad is a good man. The most we can hope for as parents is that our teachings and knowledge passed onto our children will someday be further passed onto future generations. I find myself practicing skills passed onto me by my dad and other elders who have left this world and sometimes smile or wonder if they would be proud of the work I have done.
My grandfather was a cement mason and general contractor and my dad an electrician. I worked a few jobs with my gramps and learned something but I wish i was older or him younger to be able to go on jobs with him. A lot of family friends of my gramps and dad said my grandpa was a master of his trade and took pride in his work. I hear old stories of the house i live in now being converted to a 2 story back in 65 and my dad and uncle being on summer break and breaking their back on that project.

Brilliant.. I have seen several videos on floating shelves, all of them (you are an exception) made the casing of the shelf so heavy with complicated miter joints etc. Your idea of providing thin skin on all sides of the shelf is simply out of box Thanks for sharing.

You are the wind beneath my DIY wings for what a beginner (such as myself) would consider 'a big project.' I have stood in front of my washer & dryer countless times wishing that I had more shelving than the little shelf that I do have. You even dread asking what it may cost to pay someone else to do it for you. I have done lots of these projects - in my head, with a good imagination. Watching you do it makes me certain that I can do it too. It's an answer to my prayer. Thanks much for sharing!!

Glad, I‘m not the only one tackling two person projects on my own 😂
It’s a small wonder, I‘ve never hurt myself or broken anything.
Like the idea...I‘m thinking about redoing the shelves in my kitchen and it would be super easy to incorporate spot lamps into shelves like that. I want something brighter than led strips, since the inbuilt spots in the ceiling are woefully weak. 👍

At our workshop, our crew uses a very neat woodworking app for the iPhone called WoodMaster. Great little app for woodworking and has many handy features. We mainly build wall units and book cases and the app has a shelf-spacing calculator that saves us a ton of time. Not affiliated with the developer but just thought I'd share this with fellow woodworkers.

i'm sure you've learned since making this video, but you can fasten the 2x4 cuts to the 2x4x10, then the 2x4x10 to the wall, as you did. i related to the "one wo/man show", show whenever I build shelves like this, I attach the thin plywood to the front 2x4x10 and the EDGE 2x4 cuts, then slide it onto the frame already attached to the wall and fasten everything as necessary. These shelves are awesome though!

Your video inspired me to start my own laundry makeover project. I used 2x3 wood as my laundry room is smaller than yours. I had three shelves installed, the upper two are bigger than the bottom one as I want the bottom one to be a display shelf and create a less claustrophobic feeling. I feel very proud of myself for doing this project. I hope I know how to attach the pic here so you can see my room.

So far so good. In Germany we cannot easily drill into the walls, our houses are not made of wood! So we first have to drill into the hard wall, insert a dowel and then attach the shelf. But there are extra metal rails for this so that you can properly load the shelf. I doubt that 3-5 real plants, books and pictures and decoration have space on your shelf and that the shelf does not break out of the wall.

Very well done....bravo!! As I perused the comments below, I noticed a lot of people, mostly women, giving you love simply for being able to do something like this as a woman. Well, add me to that list, as it's very rare for a woman to have such skills. It's also quite rare for men born after around 1990. Skills like tire changing, basic carpentry, cooking, organizing, personal finances, & other very common stuff that comes up in life are so freaking important for so many reasons. I'm not only saying this because I'm a 45yo man, I really do believe, far beyond anecdotally, that Gens Y & Z are markedly less skilled than previous generations on average, while they're far more skilled in other arenas such as tech, & complaining. I kid (I'm not kidding).

I'm totally doing this when I makeover my home office - though I think I might use my kreg jig to attach the support studs. Can't wait to see what you have in mind for the accent wall!

I was so over the Kreg after my last couple projects I wanted to avoid it haha. Definitely the way to go though! 🙌🏼

Great! A tip for working alone. Partially screw in the wall two or three screws depending on the size of the project being hung. Once the objectis hung back them out. Really easy.

Yes! Thank you - one person commented that when I posted this and I've used that tip ever since. Appreciate it!

👏🏻🙌🏻👏🏻🙌🏻👏🏻 You, my Dear are the bees fcuking knees of girl power! You get me all excited (NOT in a creepy way..lol) excited as in; You show what a woman *or anyone* can do if they put their minds to it. I suffer greatly with anxiety and depression and my self confidence is so low... that being said, YOU have motivated me to give things a go... I have myself a little drill and I’m building my tool collection... the best part, I’m using them and my confidence grows with each hole drilled and each nail knocked in. You are GOLD and I Love the bones off you! Thank You for sharing.xxx
