I followed this method last year and even the kids commented on how less stressed I was doing the lights! Going to tackle it again today for this years tree. Thank you so much!
I have a 10 ft. tree, did this over 15 years ago. I bought the best lights I could; wound up light around the branches, zip tied strings to branches: put the Christmas tree away with the lights on. My lights have been on for 15 years. The only thing I change out is dim or burned bulbs. Also, I got a tree gun bulb tester $6 , best thing I ever bought!!!!!! If a string goes out it can reset the whole light string to work or find the bulb that has a wire broke off, causing the string to go out. Great video!!!👍🏻👍🏻
I'm a first time home buyer, and this is our first Christmas is our new place. Obviously I needed a big and real tree. I spent a solid hour fighting with the first branches on the bottom, trying to go alllllll the way around the tree. This advice literally saved me hours of frustration and my tree look amazing. 10/10 recommend lighting your tree this way!
Came back to say this works!! I have been doing it by going around the tree for as long as I can remember. I always ended up stressed out after messing with it for a long time, and I dreaded it every year. I just tried it this way and was done in less than an hour! And I don’t want to strangle anyone lol and it looks great! Thank you so much!
Lol Same here. I would get anxiety thinking about stringing the tree lights and the struggle of doing it alone going round and round and tripping on the lights. LOL
I did this method after finding your first video last year. I went to my history to find it to do it again and then saw your link to the updated video! Thanks for making these and helping us out! Makes it so much easier! ❤ Merry Christmas! 🎄
Just used this method. Amazing, totally reduces the complexity of the task. I have two very long strings of lights, so I divided into vertical quarters instead of thirds to ensure half of the lights went on one side, and the other half on the other. Worked perfectly. 10/10, this changed my life.
Thank you so much!! I always struggle with the darn lights!! I did this today and I am so happy I did. Also, for the naysayers regarding the wires, you WILL NOT see them once the tree is finished. Thank you so much! Great video!
Thank you, Girlfriend! While I love decorating for Christmas, this is the one area that I struggle with. I watched so many videos for guidance, but this is the best! Thank you and happy holidays!
This was very helpful, thank you. My wife found this video when we were setting up our tree and I was able to get the lights on with using fewer strings of lights. The garlands went up quicker as well.
Oh, NOW I get it! I didn't in the first video but seeing you do this up close and seeing the light cord in contrast to the white tree is genius. Thank you!!!
Love your tip and the tree looks gorgeous! I’m definitely going to try this today. The lights are usually the most difficult part for me and I wished I had watched your videos years ago. Thank you so much for this cool idea!
It ended up looking pretty good. My goal will be to lay the green of the wires flatter along each branch so it's not as noticeable. Lighting the tree has always been challenging but I think I'm up for it!
I love tons of lights on my tree, can’t wait to try your method. I aim for around 700 led lights for my 7 foot tree. The good thing about led lights is they don’t produce heat and don’t use much electricity which is great as I have my lights on all the time except if I leave the house.
You are a lifesaver I watched this before I started with my lights. This made life so must easier and it looks amazing with all the lights!! Thank you! Now I'm going to watch all your tutorials on Christmas lol
Oh my God this is awesome so glad I found this video, thank you for explaining it in a simple easy to understand way. So someone like me, who is decorating with lights for the first time can follow along. I appreciate this! 🥰❤️
OMG.........every year I dread putting the lights on our Christmas tree, thank you so much for this amazing trick, I never thought of mentally dividing my tree in 3rds, this totally works, merci✨🎄⛄✨🎁❄✨
I'm totally going to have to try this way this year. Putting on the lights drive me nuts. Last year there was a point I questioned if we REALLY needed lights on the tree.
Me too! I couldn't afford a new lighted tree, so last year I cut all the original lights and put them on around and around. Bless your heart...it'll be so much easier this year ❤
Ok - I'm gonna try it!! I've been procrastinating doing the lights *all day*! This looks much more manageable - especially since we got a crazy big tree this year :P Thanks for posting!
I know this is an older video but hoping you'll still see my question! How many feet was each strand of lights you put on? We have a 9ft tree and it's 60 inches wide at the bottom. I'm trying to determine how many strands AND how many feet long each strand should be to properly use this 1/3 up and down technique. Thank you!
I have been dreading the 'lights' section of tree decorating!... (I mean look at the date, and I still DON't have the tree up, due to my procrastinating!)... I seriously dreaded this...until I found your video!... 4 yrs without a tree, and thanks to you, I may actually get motivated to put mine up!...
The tree is about 7 feet tall (it's really old, can't remember exactly) and we ended up swapping out the lights to LED lights and we used 7 strands with 100 lights on them each, so 700 lights in total!
Well yes, at this stage, that IS all you see because that is all that is on the tree. I mention this in the video - go check out the finished product and you won't notice them
Thats so good. I too have a white tree but use clear wire and white lights but go round and round like we did in the 80s! I think it looks lovely even before its done.
I already knew how to hang lights on a tree, but I was looking for a different menthod and I have to say that this method is FANTASTIC! I never thought to divide the tree in sections. This makes it much easier than my method of going around the entire tree. The clean up will be a breeze as well. THANK YOU!!
My tree is half lit because I got so frustrated with it last night I quit! So glad I found your video! I'll tackle this morning using your method! I, too, was fretting over being able to see the wires. My husband said the same thing you said, "once everything else is on it you won't be able to see them." Thanks for the info and Merry Christmas!
It's honestly the worst part of setting up the tree so I totally get it! Glad you found this helpful! let me know how it goes! And don't worry about the wires, they will disappear once everything is oN!
I wish I’ve seen this video before. This year we have about 400 lights for the tree. Hopefully we can successfully install of them by following this technique. Thanks for the video.
I think everyone is focused on the installation, the benefit I notice is the minimized "CHAOS" at the dismantling stage. One pull and the THIRD section you worked will freely come to you! : ) Looks to me this one tutorial debunks the name of your channel! No more Amidst Chaos with Christmas lights! Thanks love! and MERRY CHRISTMAS!!! XO
This is very helpful! I watched your older video first, then noticed in your comment section that you were going to post an updated video and I'm glad I did! 🎄🙂👍Merry Christmas!
Love your video. Just a suggestion to start the 1st third section from the top so that your last 3rd section ends at the bottom where your outlets are.
You will want to finish the 3rd section at the top so you can plug your tree topper in. If you follow how she did it, plug the lights into the wall before you start. That way the correct end will be at the top allowing you to plug in the tree topper.
Hello. If I may ask a question. For trees that are to be placed in the corner....can I get away with just stringing 2/3 of the tree? Will it look like I took a short cut? Thanks.
You could probably get away with it, however my recommendation would definitely be to do the whole thing. That's because at night when it's the only lights on in the room, I think you will definitely notice that the back isn't lit. My newest tree is in the corner and I light the entire thing

I honestly am not sure for the ones I used in this video as they were old. Actually after I filmed this, two large chunks of the lights died, so we ended up switching all the lights to LED ones because I am so tired of these Christmas lights dying. That's a good question - I've honestly never counted. But after this video, two strands of lights died, so we actually decided to take all the lights off and invest in warm white LED lights. Now, they are MUCH brighter than traditional Christmas lights, but we used 7 strings with 100 lights on each string - so 700 lights in total! I know for the incandescent lights, we definitely used way more because they aren't as bright. Hope that's somewhat helpful!
