My father grew up a latchkey kid in the early 60's and spent most of his weekends in matinees. He had stories about seeing the old Castle movies like The Tingler and House on Haunted Hill with the vibrating seats and the Skeleton swinging through the audience. Kids would really run out of the theater terrified, but those that were in on the joke thought it was hilarious. While Matinee isn't perfect, it always reminds me of him and some of the few happy stories he had from his childhood.
Hey great to see another vid.I saw this film late one night and couple years ago and I loved it.Having grown up with reruns of b movies and the like it was nice tribute to the era.I never thought about the ending signaling more dark stuff that was ahead but after you mentioned It i got it.Definitely a underrated gem.
Great Analysis of the film. I just recently watched the film. Very underrated enjoyable film. It really captures the early 60s quite well. The last days of innocence, the threat of nuclear war, and movies that were something you never seen before.
I would say that Small Soldiers was the last truly great film in Dante's filmography. Hopefully he'll be able to make that Roger Corman biopic which he's wanted to make for so many years.
Yes, this film has aged very nicely. While perhaps not the most accessible of Dante's films, it might be the most personal of all his work, reflecting both his love of movies and his anxieties about war. I've encountered Dante a few times in LA. He's a very nice man, and not unlike the Lawrence Woolsey character in the film. Thanks for this tribute.
Wow totally jealous, I would love to meet the guy. I am sure he is a pleasant man but I have noticed some cynicism in his most recent interviews. He still wants to direct but hasn't been given the opportunity to. Maybe if Gremlins 3 gets greenlit he will be the first person to be called. Thanks for watching.
Somehow missed this comment... yeah, the movie he really wants to make nowadays is about Roger Corman's experience directing "The Trip". There have multiple attempts to get it made, and I went to a lively script reading of it at the Vista a couple years ago, but it still hasn't happened. Of the films he's directed in this century, I know he's proud of "The Hole", "Homecoming" and "The Screwfly Solution"... but "Looney Tunes: Back in Action" was a bad Hollywood experience for him, and "Burying the Ex" was a frustrating low-budget independent experience for him. It's just sad because the modern film industry no longer knows what to do with him. "Gremlins 3" would indeed be a big comeback for him but I suspect Chris Columbus is just gonna hijack that project, since Columbus didn't appreciate the satirical route which Dante went with the second film...
Sometimes you can find it on movie channels like Encore. Netflix still has it on disc. The streaming is nice but I hope Netflix, or someplace keeps up the giant warehouse of movies. It's the only way for people to watch harder to find movies. I'd rather not download if I can help it.
So what about a review of The Stupids starring Tom Arnold? There's plenty of deep meaning and the nostalgic look of 90s movies. Mostly the nostalgic look of 90s movies.
I'm a big fan of your videos, thank you for making them 👍🏾
i saw this movie when i was a kid forgot about it for the longest time now i want to see this movie again thanks

When Ant-Man came out earlier this year, "Mant" was the first thing coming to my mind.
Movies about movies are favorites of mine, especially the world of B-movie cinema.
Can't believe I've never heard of this. Definitely checking it out.

Cool, its one of Joe Dante's last great movies.

This is a great movie! Thanks for the analysis.
You're welcome.

+staytunedguitars I didn't know John Landis was being meta with that movie, he was having a tough time in his career at that point.
May send this to Charlie Haas, John Goodman and Joe Dante.
Hey, if you know them be my guest :-/
