  • This is an analysis of one of the best action movies that I have seen in a long time, Mad Max: Fury Road. Here's hoping that those Academy Award schmucks will nominate this film for more than just the technical categories; but I doubt they will.

    I was sick and tired of people claiming that fury road is just action packed empty soap bubble. I loved every aspect of the movie, it's probably the best one I've seen this year

      +YamatoHD At least it was my favorite of the Summer. That and Mission Impossible Rouge Nation, that movie really surprised me.

      +Sean McDougall I was really oftput by the really dumb-looking opening sequence in Rogue Nation, but the end really made the film come together.

    Another stellar review. You and Oliver Harper have quickly become my two favorite film critics on YT: well researched, unbiased not reliant on campy gimmicks or slick editing. Very great stuff.

    Mad Max Fury Road and The Road Warrior are some of my favorite flicks and they made me a fan of the Mad Mac Franchise. I just love characters like Max; classic film anti-heroes like Dirty Harry, John McClane, Hermonica from Once Upon A Time in The West etc great analysis btw man you're really talented at this

    This is a really insightful look into the Mad Max franchise. I've only just come across your channel and I've really enjoyed what I've seen so far. Even though your video is shorter than the likes of say 'Redlettermedia' I feel as though you deliver a compelling argument and insight into a film that I hadn't thought of as more than a simple chase movie. I feel as though I've gained a greater appreciation for the film and the filmmaker, so I thank you for that. Please keep up the good work and I would love to see longer reviews or 'closer looks' as I love the content and would love to see a greater analysis.

      +Ben Thornley Thanks for watching Ben. I appreciate that you want the videos to be longer but I rarely make one longer than ten minutes. I just can't find enough material from one film to justify going on longer than that; I would just start sounding repetitive after awhile. And I love Redlettermedia too; but they can make a long video because they have multiple hosts to play off of and can go on several tangents that aren't even related to the film.

    Great, great, GREAT analysis as always. Thanks so much for these.
    Another connection I noticed that highlighted the failings of modern society is TS Eliot's The Wasteland. Not only is Max literally wandering the wasteland but that poem is supposed to be a commentary of modern society as well.

    • @SeaTac411
      @SeaTac411  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +poontang3zizo And apparently if George Miller makes another sequel he is going to call it Mad Max Wasteland. Mind Blown?

    • @poontang3zizo
      @poontang3zizo 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Sean McDougall I fucking knew it! lol Another interesting parallel I saw over the years was that of Mad Max's character and that of Riddick. They're basically the same character - a broken man that finds his humanity over the course of an adventure with others like him. Off course Mad Max is a lot better in execution than any of the Riddick films but I always had a soft spot for Riddick. Just thought I'd mention that as well

    Never understood why Forrest Gump gets so much hate nowadays. Saw it my 20's and still love it in my 40's. Not that Pulp Fiction is not Oscar worthy, but the fanfare for that movie has gotten a bit overboard as well.

    • @SeaTac411
      @SeaTac411  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Forrest Gump certainly isn't a bad film; I think it was just too much of a love letter to baby boomers. And Pulp Fiction has lost a bit of it's shine as time goes on.

    I had no idea Fury Road didn't make much money.

    They better be making more of these movies; this was a glorious return for Max, the Wandering Hero. I definitely want to see more.

    Good analogy of the movie. You mentioned some points that got me thinking. You said, the most famous child soldier indoctrination was with the Hilter youth, I would disagree as the most famous and successful military indoctrination of children is undoubtedly the boy scout movement. I know it seems hard to believe but consider this... the boy scout movement started in the Boar War where Bayden-Powell (Scouts' Founder) used children as messengers and stretcher bearers, SCOUTS etc. If the same was done today it would be considered a war crime. Upon his return from the war he wrote the handbook at the heart of the Scout Movement's doctrine which is still taught today. The book states that 'Every boy ought to learn to shoot and obey orders...' and includes, for example, instructions on how to use Scouts' staves as dummy rifles. The Scout movement today is the single biggest uniformed organisation in the world with a high number of dedicated Scouts, including myself, taking up careers in the Military as a natural extension of their training. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, the Military services have changed a lot since the days of Nazi Germany. But the measure of successful indoctrination is that your subjects are oblivious that the indoctrination taking place... well played Bayden-Powell, well played.

    There will be another Mad Max film. You may already know this, but if you don't, it's going to be called: Mad Max: The Wasteland. However, very recently George Miller said in an interview that he's going to take his sweet time with making the film and may even at one point if not now give over the reigns of the films to another director.
    If he does this, I hope that the director will be able to capture the physicality, spectacle and themes of the others films. We will see more of Max one way or another though.

      +Luke W. I always include the advertising cost when I look at a budget so it all cost about $193 million to film and market and made $374 million worldwide. It made a good profit but it was pretty low for a Hollywood tent pole. I'm hoping it gets some big award nominations at the end of the year so it can get a sequel but I have my doubts.

    Something I noticed that you didn't mention was the eerie foreshadowing in the movie involving climate change
    Think about it: Mad Max 2 involved a war over oil which - judging from the Iraq War and the Conflict in Syria (over an oil pipeline) - we still have today. Now idk if this was intentional or not, but there have been studies showing that due to climate change there will be droughts and heat waves making, according to one study, parts of the Middle East impossible to live in. We will probably have water wars one day and idk if this was intentional or not but it is creepy how the movie foreshadows this similar to how it foreshadow continued conflicts over oil in Mad Max 2 (which was supposed to take place in the future and since that film was released in 1981 the future is now).

    • @SeaTac411
      @SeaTac411  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good observation; I did not bring up climate change in the video because Fury Road didn't explicitly say what caused the apocalypse and I did not want to deal with climate denier trolls. The movie did show that nuclear bombs were dropped so I don't know if climate change had anything to do with it. The Mad Max mythology always changes from movie to movie, they are always a product of the time they were made in. In the mid to late 70's people were scared of gangs and soaring crime rates, after the oil embargo people started worrying about peek oil, Thunder Dome sadly didn't offer much commentary because George Miller only co-directed it, and finally Fury Road looked at water shortages. I don't know if it is true but apparently wealthy people are buying land that sits on top of aquifers so they can have clean water, don't quote me on that. Some of the papers written on climate change are truly horrifying, it would cause the largest refugee crisis ever destabilizing entire regions, and ruining agriculture. The fear of that future makes me think twice about having kids.

    • @jakebeninato9938
      @jakebeninato9938 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You call them climate-denier trolls, I call them idiots. I live in Florida, so yeah, you can trust me when I say you're not the only one truly terrified of climate-change, and it's devastating power.
      Either way, even if it wasn't intentional, it's still a cool thing to pick out and think about from this movie. I'm leaning towards it probably being unintentional because unlike the themes you mentioned that were obvious in Mad Max 2, there's too many dumbfucks out there denying climate-change and not taking it seriously, sadly.

    I enjoyed fury road for its dumb down entertainment with some good performances (stuntmen) but other than that I was baffled by all the praise. It was definitely not a Mad max movie. The funny thing is this was the most basic of story, Big truck drives along a road.........then........drives back the other way (scratching his head) and as for Max yeah! you know Max....Mad Max, the leading character was just an add on, an after thought.....Fury road just made me love the originals even more.

    creation myth for sure. Right on. Very insightful. But I don't think we have to wait around for George Miller's opinion. He's put it right in the film itself. Check this out. th-cam.com/video/iaaOktcdkHw/w-d-xo.html

    I see Fury Road as a good stand alone action movie, but not a Mad Max movie, even though it was directed by George Miller. To me, Mel Gibson is the only "Mad Max". Mad Max 1& 2 are my personal favourites.
