A Look Inside 1984 and Brazil

  • RIP John Hurt 1940 - 2017 and Chris Cornell 1964 - 2017
    If you want some explanation as to why I am signing off here you go. My life was very complicated this past year both medically and personally. I had to take care of an inflammation problem and very recently my family has been going through a tough time so my focus has been on them. And to be honest I have not seen very many films new or old that have motivated me to make a video. Film as an art form is getting dangerously stale and repetitive, sure there are a couple of indies that pop up once and a while but other than that I am just getting bored with whats getting produced. And then there is what TH-cam has become, the way the site is run, the trolls who all talk like angry 13 year olds, it's all just intolerable and I am tired of dealing with it. So to those of you who stuck around all this time I say again thank you and farewell.

      Same here, just found out this video. I wish a video like this came out in 2012-2013, I was still in high school and becoming the only movie nut of the entire class, discovering and falling in love with movies like Brazil and reading and watching 1984. Watching this video that reminded me of those two has given me an intense melancholic nostalgia, and I hope you're doing well, Sean.

    Although it is a shame to read your not doing these anymore.....I have a feeling that your not done doing this just yet. I have suscribed to many of these "film analysis" pages on TH-cam and it's yours I constantly keep going back to. You have a true talent at this. Movies that personally I would pass over or knew existed (Haven't heard really about either of these films but I do know The Simpsons used a portion of 1984 in an episode during their prime years) and I would just ignore them if I was Channel Surfing (although I don't watch much TV nowadays) but you present each movie in a relatable way regardless of Film Genre. that, is a gift. You can't fake that regardless of how much you love film. It's simply a case of "you either have it or you don't"
    Also on a personal Note, watching your Videos has helped me through a rough time during my personal life this past year or so. I almost never talk about myself personally online but I'm currently going through a rough patch in life. A part that includes being homeless. There are times I have wanted to crack but I know it's only temporary and the future is looking much better. A lot of nights I have turned to a lot of channels, yours personally. I can say the contents on your page, and other pages has gotten me through some tough days and nights
    Interesting that you are challenging your audience to not lose their humanity. Which I agree with. Especially if you look on Social Media it seems like Humanity is going to a darker place by the day. Well I actually have a challenge for YOU Mr. Mc Dougall. Like I said earlier I feel like you have a gift for this, and I've seen far too many people waste their God given talent, athletically, intellectually etc throughout my lifetime. Don't waste your talent. Don't throw away your gift
    Thanks and hope to keep hearing from you

    • @SeaTac411
      @SeaTac411  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for the kind words, it is touching to know that I could actually help people by doing this. That was quite the challenge you made at the end. I certainly don't want to throw away my gift's; but is it even up to me anymore? There are so many artists, intellectuals, and journalists struggling to be heard. And when they are heard it only seems to be appreciated by their peers and not the general public. Which is who you need to make a living, you can't survive catering to a niche audience anymore. Kubrick was one of the few artists that could sell a film to general audiences and then pack the film with messages that only his intellectual fans would notice. But today you are either an art house brat or a Michael Bay clone there's no in-between. I'll keep fighting the good fight but the reality of todays society can't be avoided.

      Update a Couple years Later. There are More Independent Journalism then ever before. People are rejecting Mainstream Media by the Day. I dont know what you are up to nowadays but I would love to see you Resurge this Page. And With the Analysis of these 2 Films, the current State of the U.S, Its eerily similar to the Film 1984. It is happening Right Now as we Speak. This Country is going to a Dark place. But I now have a better understanding of that thanks to this Upload
      Remember what I said, remember the challenge i gave you: Dont throw away your gift. The TH-cam public need voices like yours more then ever now

      @@SeaTac411 I'm feeling that same level of exhaustion and disappointment. But, usually after a good night's sleep and after reading one or two postings that I can't allow to go unanswered, I'm back at it for the day. I'll worry about tomorrow, tomorrow.
      I'm a big movie fan and I'm guessing you are, too. As I peruse your list of videos, it seems you're hitting all of my favorites. For a couple of years I worked as a film crew technician on TV commercials and industrial films.

All i can add now that i have come to the end of your upload & seen your message at the end as i did not see it eariler as i had a sneek peek as i wanted to watch it in my comfort zone i.e at home with a pot noodle. Your breakdowns of movies has been epic. Truly opened up my eyes to so many aspects of films i new where there but i could not breakdown myself. There is a huge array of movies i rewatch & can say the words of the actors but im now seeing how movies have a directors Vision & agendas even the mannerism of actors is thanks to you & owwwwwwww i enjoy movies much more as i feel watching your work has gave me a keen eye. • @SeaTac411
      @SeaTac411  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the compliment; but one of the reasons why I have stopped making new videos is because "they are haunting". I put this video up in late June warning "that we are all capable of doing terrible things to each other out of fear" and told viewers to "not lose their humanity", and in less than two months everything starts to unravel. In my Natural Born Killers / To Die For video I warned that "fantasy is the new reality" and a few months later "alternative facts" were being used on the news. In my Videodrome review I said that "any piece of technology can be turned into a weapon", now people are becoming radicalized by the internet and social media. And in my Apocalypse Now! video I said that "man is doomed to slip back into the wild, back into its natural state, back into the heart of darkness." Maybe subconsciously I want to stop because I am afraid of what might happen next. I don't have a lot of skills but I can see things coming from a mile away before anyone else.

    Fun fact: in addition to other overt methods of information control, mainland China practices a form of Newspeak with their version of simplified Chinese. China's political party says they changed the writing to increase literacy rates, but the new writing makes it more difficult for citizens to read old literature, as well as Chinese-based writing from other countries like Taiwan or Japan (the latter also simplified Chinese writing, but it's completely different than mainland China). Also the radicals or components in certain characters were rewritten because of their implications that contradict the Chinese political party's messages

    I first read 1984 in 1971. I re-read it in 1974 because I was so young at the time, I had trouble grasping Orwell's thought processes. I was glad I did. Also, having had the whole thing made visual by the movie, it brought that Dystopia alive, but I had problems thinking that things could get that bad. However, these days, I've changed my mind.
    I never saw Brazil. I have been a Monty Python fan since they were on BBC radio in the 60's and working with the likes of Tim Brooke-Taylor and Marty Feldman and onwards and upwards from there. As far as I was concerned, Terry Gilliam was their "go-to-guy" for animation and 'extras' in sketches. I had no idea how brilliant he was as a creative writer, director and producer.
    Thanks, to you Sean, I'll go out and source Brazil and watch that now. I know that Terry has made other movies, but this is one that I really want to see.
    On another note Sean, I'd just love to say how good it is to see that you have put time aside to make this inside look into these movies and I hope that you can get back into it again. You are a wonderfully insightful person who is a pleasure to listen to. Take care mate!

    One of my all-time favorite movies. I had the same feelings regarding the comparison with "1984," except "Brasil" is loaded with humor and 1984 is a nightmare. I have the same view of "Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy," and "THX 1138".

  • @tenacious3911
    @tenacious3911 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Brazil and Nineteen Eighty-Four have similar aesthetics, the look of the 1940s, despite both being set in the present day. But the fundamental problems with the societies are quite different. I think what Gilliam was trying to do was make a Nineteen Eighty-Four FOR 1984 by taking the present day issues of the 1980s and presenting them how a 1940s filmmaker might have imagined the future. In Nineteen Eighty-Four the world has lost its humanity through malice, while in Brazil the world has lost its humanity through simple indifference and self-interest.
    The mistake with arresting Buttle was easier to cover up than to fix properly because all of the parties involved didn't show enough compassion, they just shifted the blame elsewhere. Jack Lint has no remorse for Buttle's death because he pushes the blame from Information Retrieval on to the Department of Records for giving him the wrong medical files, while the Department of Records blame Information Retrieval for issuing the wrong arrest warrant.

    You're a natural-born watchdog of society. You cannot walk away from that. Your videos are superb and your vision is intensely in tune with the movies analyzed (though you seem to be a bit too disappointed in society). You don't talk "about" movies, you talk "with" movies. Don't underestimate your talent, whatever you're going to do next. Wish you all the very best.

      Thanks for the compliment, I know life is full of disappointments and maybe I am just not good at accepting that fact. I am dealing with a disappointment right now, a family member is going through a divorce and we are all dealing with the grief and helping out with their two kids. I have high expectations for myself and others; but maybe they are unrealistic expectations. I only want to make videos at a high caliber and to do that requires a lot of time and energy, time and energy that I can't seem to find like I use to. So if I can't make them at a high level then I don't want to make them at all.

      Thanks for asking Alejandro but my view on modern movies still hasn't changed that much. Maybe I'm just getting old but movies just dont excite me like they used to. It also didn't help that the Seattle Cinerama theater has closed, that really hit me hard.

    Too bad. You missed a few gems like The Babadook, Full Metal Jacket, The Seventh Seal, Mulholland Drive, Shutter Island, Ladybird, Donnie Darko, Network, Midnight Cowboy. You've referenced Paths of Glory but I'm not sure if you've reviewed the film. Ex Machina is worth reviewing in addition. Ghost In The Shell (the original) is another. What about Match Point by Woody Allen? Memento? Touch of Evil? Mr. Arkadin? Wild Strawberries is another classic by Ingmar Bergman. Age of Innocence by Scorsese is another slept on classic. Titus, the film, is worth reviewing. The Wrong Man by Hitchcock...and Rebecca by him too. Both outstanding films. Have you heard of Bronson by Nicolas Winding Refn? There are tons, and tons of films...
    I wish you and your family the best. Your take on Taxi Driver was excellent. Reconsider reviewing more films Take care.

    Gee I just discovered you...
    But I sure understand your explanation. I went through the same thing with my show/podcast: "Radio Free Mind" (www.RadioFreeMind.com).
    If you do "go out," this certainly is a high note.
    I will have to re-watch the 1984 production of "1984." When I saw it new, it seemed much less a criticism of government than just a love story set in a bad time. The 1954 version was melodramatic, but seemed to keep the flavor of the book. Maybe I was wrong.
    I wish you well in all you do. You have a fine mind. Please continue to cultivate it. I plan to quote your line about "An independent and compassionate mind" being the one thing all totalitarian regimes fear.

    Well, this is the first video I've seen of yours, and it pains me to see to see another original voice go. Remember that for every troll, there are 100 people that just come in, enjoy the work, and head out. Trolls have always been around, even before the internet. They were the ones who liked to throw rocks at tigers... from behind the safety of the cage. They think they're tough, but they're not. Not at all. However, in a real way, I'm enjoying this medium that strips away the superego so we get the pure, unfiltered thoughts of the random asshole. Here are mine. Good luck in your future endeavors. Artists are born every day and the studio engine that produces tripe loses power every day. I see a lot of great films every year that are fierce and original. In 2016, The Neon Demon. In 2015, Sicario. George Miller proved he still has great chops with Mad Max Fury Road. Recently I saw the greatest no-budget horror movie of all time -- They Look Like People. The movies are there. Just look for them.

      Thanks Jim, I know not everyone is a troll but I just got exhausted with them and internet culture as a whole.

    • @jimslav6973

      Anytime, man. The internet is a great place -- a way to easily dance around the soul-sucking studio engine and showcase yourself. Trolls are just children seeking negative attention because they don't have the charm for positive attention. They feed off shock and resignation. When you ignore them, which is the only sane thing to do, their power withers away.
      Trolls are not internet culture. People like you are. If they want to be culture, they're always welcome to create something and showcase their own talent. Until then it doesn't rally matter what they "say". Their whole outlook on life is based on the belief that they're in the center of the universe. They're in for a rude surprise one day. That's what I think about when I read those posts and it always makes me smile.
      Good luck with life, man. You'll be back one day.

    Somewhere in all the movies you love will be the message that creative spark and the will to be able to carry it out can wax and wain. Every artist has purple pathces and droughts. I am sure you even believe yourself that you won't make another film based video, but another thing true artists learn is to never take what they hear too seriously, especially the things you say to yourself. How can you leave a message saying 'don't loose your humanity', but also state that humanity has ground you down?! :) Perhaps listen to yourself saying 'don't loose your humanity' and ignore yourself when you say 'I'm done with this shit!'. As I see it, when you say the later, they....the fuck wits, the haters, the herd....win. What was the point of all those movies and all those positive messages if you failed to heed them when it actually counted?! Chin up man and never let the fuckers grind you or yours down. I look forward to your next video :) ya get me?!!

    Nice comparison of two movie, but 1984 is about western world dystopia and Animal Farm is about eastern world dystopia where all pigs are equal :) 1984 is about technological nightmare surveillance, dumbing down language with emojis, and abbreviations, every electrical appliance connected to main server (to HAL 9000), The Emoji Movie becomes first film screened in Saudi Arabia for 35 years - even ruling class of Saudi house thinks that emoji is stupid movie. Hitler technocrat wanted rule world via radio, telegraph from Berlin, where Stalin ruled via copy of Staline clone like cult leaders of North Korea, Albania, China and Romania who ruled people on personality cult.

    This is your last video? And I just discovered you the other day...your personal problems take precedent of course,but I wouldn't give up too quickly on film commentary if I were you. The movie industry has been a business from day one,but every so often something worthwhile is created,and there's still a lot more quality films that you can examine.
    I should point out that in "Brazil"...a personal favorite of mine...there is no terrorist organization. The constant explosions which rock this misbegotten society are the result of their own shoddy,poorly maintained technology continuously blowing up in their faces,and the government justifies their thuggish methods and counterproductive bureaucracy by publicly blaming it on fictional terrorists. I had to see it several times before I realized this. As for the armed men who join Harry Tuttle in rescuing Sam at the climax,don't forget that didn't actually happen.
